This read was such a fun mystery! It kept me on the edge of my seats guessing until the very end. I enjoyed all the twists and turns and recommend to anyone who likes a good mystery with the plot building throughout.
Thanks to Simon & Schuster & NetGalley for a copy to review.
Such a Quiet Place is such a good book. It kept me in suspense until the very end. Highly recommend!
I could not put this book down about 2/3s of the way in, and ended up staying up past my bedtime to finish it! The book is a quick, easy, and enjoyable read even though I found the first half to be a bit slow and repetitive. The setting had a creepy Desperate Housewives feel to it (a seemingly quiet suburban neighborhood with lots going on underneath the facade), and I did get spooked a couple of times! The ending was good and thought-provoking, and I even think that the very last chapter may not have been necessary-it didn’t add anything to the story for me. A clever thriller!
Thank you very much to NetGalley and Simon and Schuster for the advanced reader’s copy of this book in exchange for my honest review.
I went into this book with such high hopes. I have really enjoyed Miranda’s other books, and while this has very similar vibes it didn’t have the bite to it that I was craving. The characters aren’t likable and A LOT is left untouched at the end with several characters having seemingly no purpose other than allowing for smoke and mirrors. She does a little bit too good a job of creating this insular community because the issues at hand seemed to belong much more to them than in my thoughts and the frenemy vibe feels a little overdone having read all of her books except one. I did still stay interested throughout the book and got the spooky vibes I was looking for so that’s appreciated. Still love Miranda but this will go to the bottom of the pile when I pick one to recommend. #netgalley #suchaquietplace #simonandschuster
Hats off to Megan Miranda! She’s done it again! This is a great thriller! Rich, believable characters drive a twisted tale about a close knit neighborhood and an unimaginable crime committed against one home. Atmospheric and idyllic,, the neighborhood itself becomes a a character. Quiet, tranquil and picturesque becomes claustrophobic and uncomfortable during a hot summer holiday.
5 solid stars for the always impressive Megan Miranda!
Megan Miranda is one of those authors for me that always brings the excitement and anticipation of her next release date! I was thrilled to have the honor of previewing her upcoming summer release, Such A Quiet Place. Mark your calendars for July 13th - this one is a must read!
The quiet, suburban neighborhood of Hollow's Edge was given quite the shakeup when two of their own are found dead of carbon monoxide poisoning. Even more shocking was the arrest and conviction of Ruby, the neighborhood dog-walker, for their murders. Fast forward 14 months and Ruby's conviction is suddenly overturned. She is released from prison and shows back up in Hollow's Edge like nothing has changed. Her roommate, Harper, is thrust into the center of a community war and she's forced to make some uncomfortable decisions. The worst part is that Harper isn't sure if Ruby is really a killer, or if there is someone even more sinister responsible for the deaths and has been living in the neighborhood disguised as a concerned citizen.
As a domestic suspense/thriller goes, this is as good as it gets in my opinion. Confusion, untrustworthy and unreliable characters, twists & turns around every corner, the modern whodunnit. I'm pretty sure I suspected each neighbor at least once during this book - and for good reason too. As is true in most circles today, not everyone is comfortable being their true self. So how well do you really know your "nice" neighbors? How honest are you to those you're supposed to trust?
My only real struggle while reading came from trying to remember who all the neighbors were and where on the street they lived. There is a lovely overhead drawing of the neighborhood in the beginning pages of the novel, which is super helpful! I just wish it were easier to jump back and forth to check out the map during my read (it's a bit trickier on an e-reader) - there were so many moments when the map needed to be referenced! I think this would be a beautiful novel to be brought to life on-screen. The imagery of the neighborhood, the surrounding woods, the lake with it’s many “fingers”, would all come alive on screen!
Thank you to NetGalley, Simon & Schuster, and Megan Miranda for the generous gift of an eARC in exchange for my honest review.
Gah. Where to start...This book had promise - an interesting premise, an initial chapter that threw the reader viscerally into the conflict. However, the momentum could not be maintained. Phrases and inner dialogue were repeated endlessly throughout the course of the novel (we get it - Ruby is back). Characters felt like caricatures - we didn't get to know them. I kept reading in hopes of a surprising conclusion. What a letdown.
I love Megan Miranda's style; I was able to fly through this book. I read this book in 3 sittings and it definitely went by fast. In the start, all I could think about where the questions I had. Why is Ruby there? Is she planning to hurt Harper or anyone in her neighborhood? Lies and deceit fill this book and make you truly think about your next door neighbor; you don't know who they are, what they've done and what goes on inside their home while no one is around. There were times while I was reading, I was looking behind me to see if someone one there. Eerie and an overall amazing thriller that will keep you on the edge of your seat until the very end.
3.5 stars, rounded up. I enjoyed this book and read it in a day. I have to say the ending wasn’t what I expected. My only complaint is that it seemed like the characters could have been fleshed out more, and I would have liked more resolution about Ruby’s background. A fun, quick read.
Megan Miranda is one of my favorite authors and I was thrilled to read her newest!
Such a Quiet Place is solid, thrilling book that is layered with neighbor drama.
Harper Nash lives in a small, sleepy subdivision. She lives with Ruby, who in a sense, has filled the cracks left behind by her now ex-fiancé. Hollow’s Edge is a quiet neighborhood made up of mostly teachers or others involved with the schools nearby. Everyone goes through their neighborly motions; attending the community meetings, hosting bbqs, gossiping. Then, the murder of Harper’s neighbors rocks the small community. Who can you trust? Who’s lying, who knows the truth? Ruby is convicted of the murder, but Harper isn’t so sure it really was her. Fast forward 14 months and Ruby is out on a technicality. Hollow’s Edge (where the neighbors wave to each, smile from their porches, exchange pleasantries) is turned upside down when Ruby shows up in Harper’s house after her release. Underneath the fake smiles and waves, a slow burning tension is unraveling in Hollow’s Edge. Ruby claims her innocence, but Harper doesn’t know who to trust or listen to anymore. As time goes on, more lies come out and the cracks splinter away at their already crumbling facade. What will happen when the lies become dangerous and someone is watching your every move?
I did enjoy this read but felt a bit empty at the big revelation. I don’t know how to describe the feeling, but it all just felt so sad and pathetic at the end. It’s sad because this could almost be real life. Neighbors turning against each other to save themselves against their own wrongdoings. Such a Quiet Place is a slow-burner but it is wrought with tension. I do recommend giving this one a read but just be warned that you may look at your neighbors differently!
Thank you to NetGalley and Simon & Schuster for this ARC.
I love Megan Miranda's writing style.I fly through her books in usually one to two sittings and this one was no exception. It was a quick read but honestly it let me down. The premise was very intriguing, I loved the atmosphere and the setting reminded me so much of the neighborhood from "The Desperate Housewives". However, I feel like the execution wasnt great or maybe just not for me. I continuously got the characters mixed up and found the explanation of the layout of the houses pointless and confusing. The characterization, plot, and conclusion of the story wasnt her best but I did enjoy the ride to an extent because of how well her writing flows and the feeling of "suspense" she creates. I would recommend this to someone looking to get into thrillers but not for someone who has read many like myself because it felt quite lack-luster.
Reading this book was a ‘novel’ idea 🙌
This weekend I read an ARC of Such a Quiet Place by Megan Miranda. Megan Miranda is an auto-buy author for me so I was really excited to receive a copy from @netgalley in exchange for an honest review!
The novel follows Harper and Ruby who live together in Hollow’s Edge. This neighborhood association seems like a safe, happy place to live. Until the Truett’s are killed in their home, and Ruby is convicted of their murder. 14 months later, Ruby returns to Hollow’s Edge after the charges are dropped. Did Ruby really kill them? If not, then who did?
I loved this novel. It was a classic whodunit novel that kept me on the edge of my seat and double checking the locks on my door.
The characters were unreliable, distrustful and argumentative. Just the perfect cast in a psychological thriller, am I right? It was difficult to pinpoint who had disrupted the peace in this little association.
This book is out on July 13 and I highly recommend picking yourself up a copy!
QOTD: What’s the best thriller you’ve read recently?
A chilling, fast-paced read that will make you think twice about your neighbors. No one is who they seem and everyone shares their house key, a murderer is on the loose and suddenly friends are also suspects.
3.5 start read for me. I always enjoy this author's books and was excited to receive an advanced copy. This is a very quick whodunnit mystery set within small college community.. I liked how every so often you would get posts from the community blog, but I think what would have really made this better for me is if it was told from all different POV'S instead of just Harper. That way you could get a feel for the rest of the community and their take on Ruby as well as the events of the evening in question. Would recommend for a nice clear cut mystery.
Thank you to Netgalley and Simon & Schuster for my advanced copy
Having read several of Megan Miranda's books, I was looking forward to reading this newest one. I found this one to be good, and easy to read. The setting of the novel takes place in a very small town with a small housing development. Many of the residents have secrets, and they will do just about anything to keep them hidden from others. Even though each one has some secrets they want to keep hidden, they are always recording their neighborhood so they always think they know what is going on. When the resident "bad girl" returns to their town, all hell breaks lose and there are even more secrets to keep quiet.
Really enjoyed this friends and family cutthroat drama. A plethora of characters that had great development. I felt like I knew them yet didn’t know what to expect from each one until the very end. I came away with the empty realization that so many of us deny the truth. (Even to ourselves). And the virtual world we live in can be much more harmful than helpful.
Thank you NetGalley for the opportunity to read and review this book.
This is one of those books that you read and you can’t quite pinpoint why you liked it but just that you did. Hollow’s Edge is a closed community that has a lot of employees from the local college. When one is accused of murder and then gets out of prison a year in half later, things are about to get very interesting. Ruby isn’t going to hide. She will find the person responsible and she will make people pay! Loved following these characters and close community. It was a good time that’s all I know.
*Thank you to Netgalley and the publisher for an arc in exchange for an honest review.
Finished this on a snowy Sunday! It was perfect to curl up in bed with this one. I think some people might think the ending was apparent early on, but I didn't see it coming at all. Really enjoyed this one!
I found this to be a mildly interesting observation about communities/groups and how the members of such groups can come together for both good and bad purposes.
Peyton lives in the quiet neighborhood of Hollow's Edge, where she knows all of her neighbors and some of them are actually her co-workers at the local college as well. There is a map at the beginning of the book and you will need to refer to that quite a bit, as the storyline depends on it. Fourteen months ago Peyton's roommate Ruby was sent to prison for a neighborhood murder she may or not have committed. No one ever expected to see her again, yet one day she walks right back into Peyton's life and home. Peyton has always harbored some suspicion that Ruby didn't do it but admitting that would mean that someone else in her neighborhood DID do it, and it feels much safer to think it was Ruby. At least it did, until she came back. Ruby says that she is back because her sentence was overturned due to police misconduct, specifically the actions of an officer who lives in Hollow's Edge. As Peyton struggles to figure out how to get Ruby out of her house and out of her life even as she questions how Ruby was convicted and if it was just, another shocking crime is committed. Who did it and why?
I never got a good sense of why the neighbors would be so quick to turn on Ruby and send her to prison, even when the reasoning is revealed at the end of the novel. I felt the ending was a little abrupt and would have liked to read more of the fallout after the reveal. The relationships between the neighbors were hinted at but not explained fully, so the reader is left to connect the dots on their own. Though to be fair, there are a lot of people and detailing all their relationships could entail a whole other book.
Having lived in several neighborhoods with active HOA groups, the groupthink aspect of the story rang true, if a bit extreme. The natural inclination of humans to band together and be "part of the group" can drive us to do many things which is very clear in this book. It's definitely a good book, but it just didn't work as well for me as some of the author's previous works. I loved the intense but slow burn in the beginning and all the red herrings had me second guessing myself at every turn. I'd recommend this to anyone who loves psychological thrillers that delve into the psychology behind human relationships and the things we keep hidden.
This is my third book by Megan Miranda, who knows how to write a twisty fast read of a mystery. An unlikable character returns to the quiet neighborhood where she got arrested for a murder of her neighbors. Released on a technicality, her roommate and community are shocked at her brazen return. Things get wonky as neighbor spies upon neighbor in their fear and paranoia until the unthinkable happens. Nothing is as it seems. This was another enjoyable page turner, perfect for a plane trip or vacation read. I’m ready for Ms. Miranda’s next thriller.
