I love reading neighborhood suspense stories, so this one piqued my interest right away. I enjoy Megan Miranda’s writing style, but this one misses the mark for me. It was a slow-burn, which I like sometimes, but there just wasn’t enough happening to keep me fully invested. I also didn’t feel connected to the characters. Hollow’s edge was intriguing, with its similarly designed houses where employees of the local college live. I was hoping the characters would be more scandalous, but most of the drama came from Ruby and Harper (which would be expected). This was one of my most anticipated books of the year, but sadly it won’t be memorable for me.
I enjoyed this one compared to other books lately, however, I did feel it was a slow read. I felt there should have been more action or something to build up to that ending! It did keep my attention, but I feel it is more a drama then a thriller.
This was a fantastic domestic thriller. It kept me guessing until the very end. This seemingly normal neighborhood had me distrusting of every single person. I kept turning the pages because I NEEDED to know what the heck happened. The ending surprised me, and it didn't feel totally out of left field, which I prefer is this style of mystery. I highly recommend this book if you're in the mood for a suspenseful mystery where no one can be trusted.
I really enjoyed this one. It kept me guessing and I wasn't sure where it would end up. I was a little disappointed in the end, because it just kind of wrapped up without any explanation why certain characters were involved.
This was fantastic. I could not put it down, and have sent copies to my mom and her friends! Its suspenseful and so twisty - I did not see that ending coming. Read this!
I love Megan Miranda’s twisty novels and this is no different. The characters were creepy, untrustworthy/questionable and very unreliable. How could you not love that? This was a quick read that kept my attention. It would be a great beach read.
As a fan of Megan Miranda, I am disappointed in this book as it is not an original concept. I felt that book dragged on and the ending was incredibly predictable.
I've read and enjoyed many of Miranda's previous novels, so I was excited to jump into her latest! It's a bit of a slow burn. It opens up 14 months after the deaths of Harper's neighbors, Harper's roommate, Ruby, had been convicted of the crime - but a legal technicality overturned her guilty verdict and freed Ruby. She heads right back to the small Hollow's Edge community - setting all the residents on edge. Harper feels torn between the loyalty of her friendship - but also has a hard time trusting Ruby and her actions. The cast size feels a bit cumbersome at first and the relationships that Harper has all feel shallow.
The tension builds slowly and the ending is pretty exciting, though not quite as satisfying as I wanted it to be. I think that this will lead to good conversations amongst readers and it's a good backyard read - though, admittedly, not my favorite of Miranda's books. I'm looking forward to seeing what she will write next!
There are two types of slow-burns— one, burn slowly throughout and form giant bright fire-ball before ceasing; two, burn slowly and eventually cease without fire-ball! Unfortunately SUCH A QUIET PLACE falls under second slow-burn category. I have enjoyed Miranda’s previous works, but this story is mediocre best. The characters are creepy and unreliable, but the plot did not have any new element to elevate these character traits nor the ride was thrilling. Miranda’s signature writing style describing an upper-middle class neighbourhood and their lifestyle is appreciable. Its not that the story didn’t entertain me, its that this same dough ball has been kneaded many times by the thriller community. Honestly a disappointment; points for effort.
Thank you Simon & Schuster vis Netgalley for the arc.
Another great thriller from Megan Miranda. The twists just kept coming as Harper begins to doubt everything she thought she knew about Riley and all her neighbors. Does anyone really know their neighbor? Looking forward to Miranda’s next book.
What does one do when they suddenly have a convicted killer as their new roommate? I mean, Ruby was released from prison. So that means she didn't really do it? Right? And where else would she go than to the house she lived in before? Right? But that doesn't mean that Harper has to be comfortable with it.
The neighborhood of Lake Hollow is cozy and picturesque. All university employees and scenic views. And murder. Maybe some murder. Gorgeous on the surface, troubled and turbulent underneath. The place where everyone smiles to your face, then whispers behind your back.
So, I'll be honest. I didn't love this one. I thought it was just another story of what lies beneath the calm exterior of an idyllic neighborhood. This story has been done so many times and this one definitely wasn't my favorite. So...3 stars. Quick, entertaining beach read. But nothing special.
I received an ARC from NetGalley in exchange for my honest review.
This is the story of a small neighborhood and a women named Harper Nash whose husband has left her. Her friend Ruby has been convicted of murdering two of the neighbors. When Ruby returns to the neighborhood after her conviction is overturned, all the other neighbors are on edge.. As we follow the story to find out why Ruby would come back to the scene of the crime, the reader is also urged to discover if she was even guilty in the first place, or had the group of homeowners worked together to send her to prison. As with most places, we soon discover that everyone has secrets, some worse than others. This book was more of a mystery then a thriller and was a great slow burn that was a great read.
Thanks Netgalley for a copy of Such a quiet place.
The book started out strong but it dragged out a bit and wasn't very suspenseful . Just an ok read.
I was so excited to read this story by Megan in advance of her July publication date. This story played out like a movie in my head as characters frantically assess new stresses in their lives after a suspected killer returns to their neighborhood. I truly enjoyed the multiple POVs to place clues for the ending. While not as strong as my first book I read by Megan, All the Missing Girls, this ranks up as one of her stronger stories she's written thus far.
this book had me hooked from the very first chapter. It was a great read that had you on your toes until the very end. Every time you think you know who did it, there is a new revelation which directs you differently. I'm a fan of this author and look forward to reading more in the future. Very well written.
Hollow’s Edge is a quiet neighborhood where neighbors socialize and take care of each other. Many of them even work at the local college located just across the lake. Hollow’s Edge almost feels more like one big family instead of just a neighborhood. But then a couple is murdered in their home and one of their neighbors, Ruby Fletcher, is convicted of the crime. Two years later Ruby’s conviction is overturned and she returns to Hollow’s Edge. As it becomes apparent that there were facts about the night of the murders that were never revealed, suspicions begin to grow among the close-knit friends. What really happened the night the Truetts died?
Megan Miranda’s book is a slow burn, filled with twists and surprises. The characters are well-developed and the story itself is suspenseful, with a good flow and pace. All in all, Such a Quiet Place is an enjoyable book that I recommend.
Many thanks to NetGalley and the publisher for providing a copy of this book for review.
Thank you NetGalley and Megan Miranda for this ARC. I really wanted to get to this prior to release but the end of Summer caught up with me. I loved this story. I promise no spoilers but WOW! One thing I respect and love about Megan Mirandas writing is her character development and the distrust she creates between each of them from the beginning to the end.
Hollow’s Edge used to be a quiet place. A private and idyllic neighborhood where neighbors dropped in on neighbors, celebrated graduation and holiday parties together, and looked out for one another. But then came the murder of Brandon and Fiona Truett. A year and a half later, Hollow’s Edge is simmering. The residents are trapped, unable to sell their homes, confronted daily by the empty Truett house, and suffocated by their trial testimonies that implicated one of their own. Ruby Fletcher. And now, Ruby’s back.
I loved this book and think any good thrill lover would too. Definitely one to add to your TBR!
I barely got through this and to be fair, I decided to DNF halfway through.
This just was not for me. It was slow to get me hooked and didn't successfully achieve anything in the time I gave to it. I read up on the ending and it did sound like it had potential, but another friend who didn't love it either said I wasn't missing much.
In the close knit neighborhood of Hollow's Edge, there has been a double murder, and the murderer is one of their own. Ruby is convicted of killing The Truett's but after only a short time in jail, she is released and her conviction overturned. Now Ruby is back, living in Hollow's Edge and no one wants her there, including her roommate Harper.
Did Ruby commit the murder? What is next for Hollow's Edge?
This was a bit of a slow burn mystery. I was very intrigued at the beginning- wondering why Ruby would kill her neighbors for seemingly no reason. I had a lot of questions that fortunately were mostly answered as I read.
What I liked most about this book was the character dynamics of the neighborhood. This is a neighborhood that is very private to outsiders- each house has cameras and there is a community blog that stays very current. These people know everything that happens to each other, every detail of the comings and goings of the neighborhood. They are recovering from the loss of their friends and the horror of one of their own committing the murders.
This really showcases that no matter how close this group is, they will always look out for themselves first.
The ending was a bit anticlimactic but overall, I enjoyed this quiet thriller.
Thank you so much to @simonbooks and @netgalley for my review copy of ‘Such a Quiet Place by Megan Miranda
Megan Miranda knows how to hook me in!
Miranda’s books tend to focus on a relationship between two (usually female) characters, and I’ve always found books about the relationship/issues between two friends are my favorite.
‘Such a Quiet Place’ did not disappoint.
We’ve got our main character Harper and her friend Ruby, who was recently released from prison when her MURDER conviction gets tossed out on a technicality.
With an entire neighborhood suspicious of Ruby you can imagine how complicated that makes their relationship.
Miranda is also the queen of creating such a creepy atmosphere in her story’s that you can never tell who to trust.
Which is especially unsettling in a setting that should be so safe and comfortable, like an idiclic neighborhood.
Perfect summer page turner for any road trips or pool side reading you may do before the summer is up!
