One for the Hooks by Betty Hechtman is the 14th A Crochet Mystery. It can be read as a standalone for those new to the series. I thought One for the Hooks was well-written with developed characters. I like that Molly Pink is a mature woman who is a clever and capable. I was not a fan of the way Molly dealt with her son, Peter in this book. I thought she would set down some rules for the pushy son and his cold girlfriend. Molly most do some soul searching when Mason makes her an offer. The whodunit had multiple suspects (a whole neighborhood), misdirection, and a unique method of murder. One detail early in the book is all that is needed to solve the crime (I am not telling you which one). I enjoyed following Molly and Dinah as they dug up information and got themselves into trouble in pursuit of justice. Barry, of course, wants Molly’s information, but he is reluctant to share. He also does not always appreciate her theories (you would think he would have learned to trust her by now). There are cute pets, gorgeous yarns, fun with friends, plus book and yarn events. I enjoyed the one-of-a-kind scarf project that Molly came up with using the yarns she purchased for the shop. Adele was even more over-the-top than usual thanks to her vlog. Her outfits match her ego (loud and large). I laughed often while reading One for the Hooks. I am eager for the next A Crochet Mystery after reading the ending. One for the Hooks is an entertaining cozy mystery with ritzy yarns, a significant other’s suggestion, a problematic progeny, a daring drone, a curious killing, sensational Serendipity scarves, and the plucky Molly Pink.
The means of murder certainly changes as technology advances! I loved this latest in Betty Hechtman’s Crochet Mystery series! Visiting Molly, her family, friends, and coworkers is one thing I always look forward to. We continue to learn new and interesting things about our favorite characters and enjoy how well-defined new characters are. For instance, Adele is now “The Adele”, a well-followed vlogger. She is still a source of LOL humor that fans won’t want to miss!
Molly’s personal life continues to be an adventure! Her older son moved himself and his pregnant lady friend into Molly’s home when they were caught between homes and their television careers were on hold. Her “plus one”, Mason, does pro bono legal work along with his celebrity law practice for a group getting new trials for innocent prisoners new and has a plan for himself and Molly. Barry, the detective Molly used to date, also wants her help with a case that she has an interest in – a first for him!
Molly was invited to look at a large stash of yarn at the home of Miami, a young woman who inherited her aunt’s property. She and a couple members of the local crochet group, Tarzana Hookers, go to see the yarn, and come up with a plan to use it if purchased for Shedd and Royal Books and More. The “More” includes a yarn and accessories department which serves as a meeting place for the Hookers to gather. When they return to pick up the boxes of yarn, Miami’s Realtor, Sloan, is killed in a freak accident with a drone. While it is assumed the neighbors protesting Miami and Sloan’s plan to rent rooms from her home were behind it, Molly thinks the drone was aimed at Sloan. At the request of Mason and her older son, Molly tries to stay out of it, even though she has been instrumental in helping identify and catch killers in the past.
The plot twists and turns kept this reader on her toes! I had no idea whodunit. It was a huge surprise to me whodunit and why! The author has gifted us with a fabulous mystery with one of my favorite long-time sleuths in what sounds like the coolest bookstore in California. Molly’s personal life was exciting to see and was presented with a great balance of mystery and personal. I was very pleased with the ending and looking forward to the next in series! It includes the perfect, easy scarf pattern. I highly recommend this to fans of well-written, humorous, intriguing cozy mysteries with a cast of characters that is like a family, bookstores, and crocheting. It can be read as a standalone, as sufficient backstory is given to follow it. You might just want to go back and read the rest!
From a thankful heart: I received an eARC of this book from the publisher through NetGalley, and this is my honest review.
Happy to be back in touch with an old pal, Molly Pink, along with her friends and coworkers. Her son and her boyfriends, maybe not so much. I have read about half of this series but obviously, I had missed some recent developments.
Suspend disbelief for this one which includes deadly drones dropping seafood shell remains and an attack by electric eels. It’s all good fun, except for the victims.
I’m not so sure I’m on board with the boyfriend situation at the very end but we’ll just have to see what happens next.
Thanks to Netgalley for this fun and funny cozy.
First, I want to thank NetGalley for giving me this e-arc for a honest review.
I just love reading cozy mysteries because you get a lot more than just a story. In this book, you get a crochet pattern and a recipe at the end of the book!
This is the 14th book in Hechtman’s Crochet mystery series. I have read and enjoyed each and every one of them, and this book was no exception. I gave this book 4 stars, and had a blast reading it.
In One for the Hooks, Molly is dealing with her oldest son who has moved into her home without asking, and is now taking over. He also has a pregnant girlfriend has a girlfriend, who he has never mentioned. In addition to this family drama, Molly is also dealing with a police detective ex-boyfriend, and her current boyfriend who is a lawyer.
Molly works as the assistant manager for a bookstore. Her responsibilities also include overseeing events held at the store. Another one of things she is charge of is the yarn section of the store, where they teach crochet and hold other such events. A real estate agent contacts Molly at an event to ask her if she would be interested in buying some yarn for the store. She goes over to have a look only to find that there are only small sample of yarn, so she has to come up with an idea that uses small yarn amounts. She does come up with an idea, and decides to purchase the yarn. When she goes to pick it up, the real estate agent is attacked by a drone and dies.
The police are saying it is an accident, but Molly isn’t so sure. She ends up helping her ex boyfriend solve the case by talking with the neighbors and finding out somethings that he wasn’t able to.
Was it an accident or was it murder? You will have to read the book. What about her relationships with the two men? What about her son and his girlfriend? Again, you will have to read the book to find out! I suggest that you start with book one so you can get the whole picture of the characters and the setting.
I had a wonderful time reading this book and find that they are pretty quick reads, perfect for a weekend. I hope you read this series, as it is great fun.
Death by drone with an arsenal of seafood shells? That really would be One for the Hooks (eh, books).
The Tarzana Hookers are not what you think. They are a club of crocheters that meet in a local bookstore. Molly is an assistant manager in the bookstore and an active member of the club. Molly is also a fifty-ish widow with two grown sons, an ex-boyfriend and a new plus one.
Sloan is a stager working on a soon-to-be short-time rental home in the Valley. She contacts Molly trying to sell her a group of yarn samples that were found in the house. Soon afterwards, Sloan is killed by a pile of seafood shells dropped on her by a drone. Molly is asked by her ex, who is a local detective, to be on the lookout for clues.
One for the Hooks is a nice mix of family drama, cozy mystery, and romance. It is nice to see a heroine who is not in her thirties still have a love life. The solution to the mystery was impossible to solve until one clue was revealed at the 90% mark. This is also when Molly unmasked the motive and the killer. That didn’t seem quite fair. Hopefully, there was an earlier clue that I missed.
Overall, One for the Hooks was a fun book to read. The ending was a complete and twisty surprise! I will definitely be looking for the next book in the series. 4 stars!
Thanks to Crooked Lane Books and NetGalley for a copy in exchange for my honest review.
I have never read a story by this author before and I am really kicking myself for not having discovered her previously. I am a crafter, so this story was right up my alley. Loved the humor but also the romance too. Great story.
The fourteenth in the Crochet Mystery series. This mystery is infused with humor. Our protagonist is a fiftyish amateur sleuth that also belongs to a crochet group called the Tarzana Hookers.
Molly Pink and her friends provide entertainment while trying to solve a crime. I thoroughly enjoy this series even though I haven’t read most of the books. I started with book 12. What I like about the series is that if I never feel that I miss any of the main story. These are standalone books with relatively the same main characters except for the victim and their baggage/associations.
Soon, I hope to have time to read books 1 through 11. Looking forward to the next installment as the ending left me wondering what will happen next?
There is a pattern at the end of the story.
I was given an ARC e-book copy from Netgalley. I am not required to leave a positive review.
Having missed the first books in Betty Hechtman's "A Bay Crochet Mystery" series, I decided to take the plunge and dive straight in at book fourteen with this novel, One for the Hooks and I would have missed a treat if I hadn't!
Molly Pink is in her fifties and is a really strong character. She is employed by a bookshop owner where wool and yarn is also sold, called Shedd & Royal Books and More. She runs the Tarzana Hookers crochet club and has many other interests. When a shop customer dies after having the misfortune to be in the wrong place when a drone drops its smelly seafood rubbish load on her, Molly steps up to the plate to investigate.
I loved the premise for this fabulous cozy mystery which was a change from the norm. Brimming with madness and mayhem it was rich in humour and there were soupçons of romance. The mystery itself kept me guessing and I enjoyed the subplots regarding Molly's family. The author's writing style was transfixing and her plot was well-structured throughout. Possessing an intriguing cast of colourful characters, One for the Hooks is a zany ride to the finale and will delight many lovers of cozy mysteries. I am hoping to read this series from the beginning which might take some time!
Disclosure: Thank you to Crooked Lane Books for providing a digital ARC of One for the Hooks by Betty Hechtman via Netgalley for review. All opinions expressed in this review are my own.
This is the latest cozy crochet mystery involving Molly Pink and the Tarzana Hookers. Molly, a bookstore employee and her crochet group are up the their eyes in trouble as they solve a new mystery. Fans will enjoy this addition to the series.
I received a copy of this book from Net Galley for my unbiased review.
ONE FOR THE HOOKS is the fourteenth book in the Crochet Mystery series by Betty Hechtman and can be read as a standalone. While I’ve read a few of the first books in the series, I haven’t had a chance to catch up. However, I never felt lost in this newest release. The author has crafted a humorous cozy mystery featuring a fifty-something older woman sleuth, Molly Pink, one of the members of the Tarzana Hookers… a crochet club. She combines books, lots of pets, garbage dumping drones, oodles of yarn, great friends, some romance, and a murder to create a read that had me glued to the pages. With twists and turns to keep the reader guessing, Ms. Hechtman pens an electrifying reveal and an ending that left me speechless and wanting to read the next book in this crafty series sooner than later. While I don’t crochet, I was intrigued that there is a unique, one-of-a-kind, crochet project at the back of the book, along with a recipe.
I was provided with an advance copy. All thoughts and opinions are my own.
I love that our protagonist is a strong, intelligent, older woman. This is such a fun series, and this book was no exception. The characters were great, the story was well-paced, and I loved trying to figure out who-dun-it!
From the cover of this book to the very end, I enjoyed it all. This book cover just cracks me up with the crazy expression on the sweet little dog's face! That's one thing I jadmire about Molly, the love she has for dogs (and for her kids as you'll see in this installment). It looks like another dog joined the family eventually in this book.
Since this series only comes out once a year, it's kinda hard to remember just when Molly started seeing Mason instead of Barry, but it's pretty clear that Barry never got over her. I'm sure I was Team Barry when that happened, but Mason was so darn nice to her.
This was a real puzzler having a death by drone situation and trying to figure out if the person killed was really the target, and if they were, what was the reason and which of the cul-de-sac neighbors did it? Molly was again working with Barry, so sometimes she made me crazy how she'd beat around the bush to give her info to him, but I guess that's just part of her charm. She's got lots of other more endearing qualities though, so that's not a make or break, lol.
The showdown was pretty creepy, but luckily Molly got things under control right before backup arrived. The perp was definitely not who I thought it would be. I gotta admit, I was happy with the way things turned out at the very end.
I voluntarily read and reviewed an ARC of this book provided by the publisher via NetGalley, and my opinions are my own.
A charming cozy series with a delightful group of charcters. This is the 14 book in the series and I have followed the series from the beginning. I like that Molly is featured as in her fifties, works in a book store and has a fun group of women friends she does crochet with. Its a delightful return to this fun cozy series.
Barry is her ex boyfriend and a local detective. He asks her for her help in a recent murder she was the witness to and they work together well in this book. The sleuth was multi layered and interesting to conclusion. As always I love returning to the group of friends and to Molly as a savvy protagnist.
I will start this review by saying I do not know how to sew, knit or crochet. However, I have read cozies with similar subject matter in the past and it has not detracted from my enjoyment of the story. However, I thought this whole mystery plot was silly, especially since the cause of death appears to be an accident until the last 25 pages or so. This one also features a love triangle, which has sadly become a recurring theme in cozies lately and honestly the whole concept is just getting old.
I liked the animal menagerie but that was kind of it for the story. I thought it could have come together better and the whole thing seemed a bit contrived. I finished the book but I don't think I will check out the others in the series at this point.
A well written cozy mystery staring a 50 something spunky lady is a treasure. Molly Pink fits the bill perfectly. She works in a bookstore, has an ex-boyfriend and belongs to a group called The Tarzana Hookers Crochet Group. On the side they solve crime. This time Molly's ex, Barry the police detective, has need of her talents re: investigating homicides. This one is certainly original. The victim has a run in with a deadly drone with an equally deadly (for her) cargo that drops on her. Accident? or murder?
I came to this series rather late and still have some books to enjoy. I am all thumbs when it comes to crocheting and knitting (much to my grandmother's dismay as she was a true master) but this series has such great characters and well plotted puzzles that it doesn't bother me one bit.
My thanks to the publisher Crooked Lane and to NetGalley for giving me an advance copy in exchange for my honest review.
Well that was a shock! Sloan, an interior designer is killed when a drone drops smelly seafood garbage on top of her. Molly, our intrepid amateur sleuth, is concerned because not only was Sloan a customer at the bookstore where she works, there are other issues as well. She swings into action with her crochet circle, the Tarazana Hookers, when her ex Barry, a homicide detective asks for her help. She's busy with that and not with Mason, her current love interest, which causes problems for that relationship. I like Molly because she's a "mature" heroine and if it's extremely implausible that a homicide detective would use a civilian in this way, I just chalk that up to this being a cozy. Thanks to netgalley for the ARC. I've only read one in this series so it was kind of a standalone for me which was fine. But the ending....
I have been following Molly through 14 books and am never disappointed. She is a fifty something year old woman working in a book store and active in the Tarzana Hookers crochet group. She also stumbles on and snoops into murders which usually does not go over well with Barry her now ex boyfriend and detective. However, this time is different when Barry actually asks her to see what she can find out talking to friends and acquaintances about a recent unusual accidental death she witnessed.
I have been following the relationships Molly has with Barry and then Mason for quite a while and I am happy in the progress made in this book. The mystery had a creative and relevant ending and Adele, now The Adele, has once again taken everything to a new level. Thanks to Crooked Lane Books and NetGalley for an ARC. The opinions expressed are my own.
As usual, I enjoyed my visit with Molly and the Tarzana Hookers. The mystery was interesting and plotted well, with a few twists, and a conclusion I didn't expect. What knocked this down to three stars for me was the love triangle. It's been somewhat in the background the last few books and I thought for sure she had finally made a decision but it all still seems up in the air. I just don't care for too much romance in my cozies to begin with but the drawn-out love triangle is the worst trope in cozies and makes me hesitant to grab the next book.
Fifty-ish widow Molly Pink returns home to find the back door wide open and her precious pets outside - clearly, someone's been inside. She's got a phone. Does she call the police? Does she go pound on her neighbor's door for help? Nope. She picks up a makeshift "weapon" and charges inside all alone. Right off the bat, nonsense typical of the heroine in a cozy novel - and the biggest reason I don't exactly cozy up to the genre. With a heavy sigh, I thought to myself this was the start of a pattern for disaster.
But I love to crochet, which is what attracted me to the book in the first place - so I kept going. And I'm happy to say that in very short order, Molly, and an entertaining and clever plot, had me hooked. Not only is she the organizer of the Tarzana Hookers crochet group, she's developed a bit of a reputation for sleuthing (honed, no doubt, in the 13 previous books in this series). When a friend tells her that a local homeowner wants to get rid of an enormous amount of yarn, she consults with the owners of the California bookstore at which she works (in part managing the yarn shop inside), and off she goes for a looksee. The owner, who inherited the property, wants to turn part of the house into rental units - and the first thing Molly learns is that the neighbors are in a snit about it.
But then, the woman who is helping the owner get the rooms ready to let gets bombarded by a drone - first by hitting her on the head and, as she falls, dropping a huge pile of smelly garbage on her. To the rescue comes Molly's former BFF, homicide detective Barry Greenberg. Since their breakup, he's been keeping his distance, but there are hints that the old flame could rise from the ashes at any given minute even though Molly has a new main squeeze named Mason, lawyer to the stars. He's hot to trot toward marriage, but so far she's holding steady at a canter.
Meantime, the older of Molly's two sons has unexpectedly returned home to quite literally take over her house, complete with a pregnant significant other and an attitude that would guarantee I'd kick him to the curb (if Molly has a fault, it's that she can't seem to say no to anybody). But since she spends a lot of time at work, sharing stories with her crocheting buddies and out following clues on behalf of her once-loved detective, she seems content to let her son have the run of her place.
I was bothered a bit by some repetition - descriptions and utterings by characters in one chapter that had appeared in earlier chapters. But all's well that ends well, bringing a few gasps and a twist that most likely will get the attention of series readers (as for me, I was just happy that she finally said yes to something). The end also brought a couple of nice surprises, one in the form of a tasty-sounding recipe and the other the pattern for the "Serendipity scarf" that was featured in the story. Overall, I'm very happy to have read it - and yes, I'll be watching for No. 16. Thanks to the publisher, via NetGalley, for the opportunity to read and review a pre-release copy. Good job!
One for the Hooks is the fourteenth book in Crochet Mystery series by Betty Hechtman but can be read as a standalone.
I have been reading this series out of order for years and have been thoroughly enjoying it. I never had the problem of not being able to get into the story or to find it confusing.
I like this series very much, it is a perfect blend of mystery, romance and life that I find very appealing. Other aspects of the book do not deter from the mystery, which is always well presented, all clues clearly set out so it is easy for the reader to follow the trail should she wish to.
I equally enjoy reading about main protagonists personal life, her work in the library as well as her numerous engagements in the crochet club, even though I am not a crocheter myself I still enormously delight in reading about their various projects, as much as I relish reading about mystery. For me these different aspects only make the story more realistic and believable.
Although the mystery is as always very intriguing the great surprise awaits the readers at the end of the book.
