"Cozy Case Files, A Cozy Mystery Sampler, Volume 11" offers readers a taste of six cozy mysteries by various authors, providing an opportunity to sample different series and find new favorites. While the collection is a delightful way to discover new cozy series, it falls short of a higher rating due to some mixed quality among the included excerpts.
Each of the featured stories has its own unique charm and setting, from 1914 New York to a bakery in Oregon. The diverse range of cozy mysteries on offer ensures that there's something for every cozy mystery enthusiast.
However, the limitations of this sampler become apparent when you realize that the excerpts are quite short, making it challenging to fully immerse oneself in the stories or connect with the characters. Additionally, some of the excerpts feel rushed or lack a strong hook, which can be a drawback for readers looking to be captivated from the start.
While "Cozy Case Files, A Cozy Mystery Sampler, Volume 11" is a useful tool for exploring new cozy series, it doesn't provide a fully satisfying reading experience in itself. It serves as a teaser, and readers may find it necessary to seek out the full novels to truly appreciate the stories. Nevertheless, it accomplishes its goal of introducing readers to a variety of cozy mysteries and may lead to the discovery of some enjoyable new series.
I want to thank Netgalley and the author for gifting me the ebook. Great short story mystery novel's by different authors. Recommend for a good weekend read
So disappointed in this book--I should have read the blurb more carefully. I expected a series of short stories by each of the authors and not sample chapters. That just doesn't do it for me.
I loved that this is a compilation of different cozy mysteries from different authors whom otherwise I probably wouldn’t have heard of. I recognized some of the authors but others took me by surprise. I’ll definitely be checking out these cozies!
I will not be reviewing this book online. I thought by sampling authors they meant this was a collection of short stories by various authors of mystery books. Instead it appeared to be a series of excerpts from longer works that left the story unfinished in hopes you would buy the entire book.
Perhaps it was my mistake, I was very disappointed.
A sampler book with several different books by various authors. Each section has a few chapter sample of a book to get a feel for the read. A nice way to put similar genres together and introduce a few titles one may be interested in reading.
As this states, this is a sampler of Cozy Mysteries. Each story leads you down the path of where the story is going and then ends. With each story you read, the more you want to continue on reading to find out what happens. I would have to say the Paige Shelton was my favorite and I wanted to much to be able to read more.
I will definitely be picking up each of these stories as they left me hanging and wanting for me.
Brilliant job in selling these stories as each one was intriguing with where you left off.

Previews of several new cozy mysteries by multiple authors.
Death of a Showman--1914, the former girlfriend of a composer returns from Europe with the family she serves to find her former boyfriend has married a showgirl. It took a while to figure out the status of the MC/POV character, but she has a witty, sarcastic approach to what going on around her.
Deadly Editions--6th book in a series. Delaney is an American bookseller in Scotland and a newlywed. She's invited to participate in a rare book scavenger hunt with the prize being the entire collection. Intriguing concept.
Bodies and Bows--Iris and her grandmother own an apron & sewing shop and her friend is considering going back to her estranged husband. The sample doesn't get into the characters or the plot enough to engage me.
Murder with a View--3rd book in a series. Whitney and her cousin renovate properties and buy an abandoned motel. They discover a homeless veteran squatting in one room and a dead body in another. Sample ends with a chapter from the cat's POV. Interesting.
Chilled to the Cone--12th book of a series. Juliet/Jules owns an iced drink & cold custard shop that is in the process of expanding.
Fatal Fried Rice--7th book of a series. Lana is going to culinary school when an instructor is killed, and Lana winds up as a suspect.
Nice collection of the new crop of cozies coming out. Just enough of a tease to get you interested in reading the whole stories.
Thanks to NetGalley for allowing me to read this book in exchange for my honest review.
This book provides samples of six different cozy mysteries by six different authors. Since this is my first sampler, I'm not exactly sure how to review this book.
The book itself was nice. By the end, I had found two new series I would like to try. However, as a whole, I was not very impressed by the books that were chosen and would like to leave my impressions below.
Death of a Showman begins with the narrator and her grandson attending the newest Broadway musical, Cats. Reading their opinion of this musical was hilarious, because it sounded just like me and my mother. She never understood who would be interested in a musical about cats and I could never figure out the storyline, although I love a few of the songs. However, in this sample, I found there was a lot of narration and backstory and not a lot of action or dialogue. By the end of the sample (prologue + 3 chapters), I was confused about the story and found no mystery, although there were several hints that a murder would be coming soon.
Deadly Editions has several mysteries by the end of this sample, including a murder, a treasure hunt, and a cold case. I enjoyed the characters and writing and am looking forward to reading more. However, although I found this sample intriguing, I have decided to begin reading at the first book in this series before continuing this book.
Bodies and Bows had a cute premise and I loved the setting. However, this sample was not divided into chapters and, although it felt about 2.5 chapters long, it felt as if it ended in the middle of a scene. By the end of the sample, there had been no mystery, although I was already suspicious of several characters.
Murder With a View had a little too much information in the blurb. Before beginning the story, I knew the name and occupation of the victim. I would have preferred it to be a surprise. The story begins with a short scene that had nothing to do with the story. I would have much rather the book started with the main character going into the courthouse. The last chapter of the sample (chapter 3) is from the cat's point of view. While cute, I wasn't sure what it had to do with the story. Also, while the MC's story is 1st person, the cat is third, which was even more confusing. Overall, by the end of the sample, there are three chapters and no dead body, although the motel project was interesting enough that I might want to read this book to find out what happens with that.
Chilled to the Cone starts with a lot of background information that I can only assume is a summary of previous books. As the story continues, it gets interesting, but then it goes into all that backstory and narrative again. I found myself glossing over and skimming much of this sample, which had no dead body by the end of chapter three.
Fatal Fried Rice also has a blurb that tells me the murder victim before I start the story. However, I loved the way this story opened and the character felt very real to me. This sample included the murder victim, as well as the main character's initial reaction to finding it. By the end of the sample, I already had a much of suspects and am looking forward to reading the rest of the book. However, I think I will start with the first book in the series, since I really loved this main character.
I did not read many cozy mysteries before, so Im new to this genre. These were nice samples of some mystery books, and some stories I like better than others, however I can’t really say much about them because they are not whole stories.
This is the second book in this series and it is even better then the first. This series has great characters and is set in a wonderful location. I cannot wait for the next book.
Many of my favorite Cozy authors are in this book. This was a charming set of samples. All the mystery started easily, they described the setting and introduced the crime in an interesting way. I loved the different time periods a few samples brought, especially when they used the dialects of that time. I thought that was a lovely addition. Overall these were all great and they all definitely cozy reads.
Thanks to Netgalley for Cozy Case Files, Volume 11. I enjoy cozies as an easy read, usually with fun characters that you can grow to love or hate over the series. I was already familiar with all the authors in this sampler except for Death of a Showman by Mariah Frederick. I liked it and plan to check out this author.
I have read several books by Paige Shelton from her earlier series but did not really enjoy the first book in this series; however, this snippet was intriguing and I may have to go back and try this series again.
Bodies and Bows by Elizabeth Penny sounds like an interesting continuation in the lives of the main character and her perky grandmother as well has her group of friends.
Murder with a View by Diane Kelly was less exciting than the two previous books in the House Flipper series but still pretty entertaining.
Chilled to the Cone by Ellie Alexander held my desire to find out what happens next at Torte Bakery and to the ensemble of people who work there. I also like the setting in Oregon.
Fatal Fried Rice by Vivien Chien sounds like another cute entry in this series about a hapless young woman who manages a family owned Chinese restaurant and keeps getting mixed up in police business.
thanks, it's a good resource to discover new cozy series - hard to review because it's not a book though.
So I guess I should start with saying what I expected from this book as that will likely explain my rating. I was expecting several short, cozy mystery stories. I was looking forward to a complete story. What I got was a teaser for 6 different books. So, first off I will say I enjoyed each of them. It was clear each author had a distinct voice and went about introducing the reader to their characters and their story in their own unique way. Some of them introduced you to the mystery right off the bat and others I had trouble telling if I was reading a cute little romance novel or a mystery. Some of the stories were similar enough that I had a hard time keeping them all separate in my head, especially as I was reading these teasers back to back. I do see the value in presenting it this way, it just wasn't what I expected so I was a bit disappointed. However, I do see myself buying a few of the books to find out what happens!
Another good cozy collection. I am becoming a huge fan of the cozy mystery genre due to stories like these. You can read this as an escape from the everyday in a weekend. A really good mysteries.

Boy, some publishers will do anything to sell books. Take, for example, St. Martin’s Press/Minotaur Books, who published Cozy Case Files: A Cozy Mystery Sampler, Volume 11. This company has declared that getting the word out about their awesome authors is their top priority.
I guess that’s a good thing. Actually, it’s a really good thing.
From what I can tell, I’ve been missing out on this clever marketing tool that previews upcoming cozy mysteries. I have two of these smart little overviews in my bevy; volumes 11 and 12. Today I’ll run down what’s inside the older volume that covered January 2021, and tomorrow I will catch up with volume 12, the most recent Cozy Files sampler.
The way this works is simple:
We see a short overview of each title.
We get a teaser of each story.
We get each book’s three beginning chapters, enough to convince readers to open their pocketbooks and let their dollars fly right out.
Sampler 11 features:
Death of a Showman: A Jane Prescott Novel by Mariah Fredricks.
In this fourth absorbing book set in the Gilded Age, New York lady’s maid Jane Prescott is thrust into the world of show business, where a killer is stalking Broadway.
2. Deadly Editions: A Scottish Bookshop Mystery, by Paige Shelton.
A treasure hunt through Edinburgh gives way to a search for a villain terrorizing the city in the sixth Scottish Bookshop Mystery.
3. Bodies and Bows: The Apron Shop Series, by Elizabeth Penny.
Iris Buckley is tying a bow on a wonderful summer when murder strikes … and death is something a quick stitch can’t fix.
4. Murder with a View: A House Flipper Mystery, by Diane Kelly.
The third in the delightful cozy mystery series from Diane Kelly set in Nashville, TN— where the real estate market is to die for.
5. Chilled to the Cone: A Bakeshop Mystery, by Ellie Alexander.
Pastry chef and amateur sleuth Juliet Capshaw finds herself on thin ice as she attempts to solve her latest case of a small-town murder.
6. Fatal Fried Rice: A Noodle Shop Mystery, by Vivien Chien
Ho-Lee Noodle House is getting schooled in murder.

Happy are those who respect the Lord and obey him. You will enjoy what you work for, and you will be blessed with good things. Psalm 128: 1-2
These samplers are a great introduction to cozy mysteries. This gives a brief sampling of various titles and allows my patrons to explore new authors. If they find one that appeals to them, there are also lists of other books the author has penned. It also helps librarians determine what new cozy authors to include in their collection.
