Avery Flynn & Tracy Wolff together? In the same book? Yes please! I love both of them so I just knew this would be the story for me. I couldn't put it down
Avery Flynn and Tracy Wolff are the dynamic duo with this book! I absolutely adored this book from two new to me authors.
Oh this was one enjoyable, slow burn, laugh out loud Rom Com. Everything about this book was fantastic! A top read of mine this year and a definite must read!!
Such a fun read! So entertaining and the characters were so unique and kept your interest right up until the end.
A sparkling romance full of twists and turns. A little air of lightness for this chick-lit really cute and funny. Maggie is a zany heroine who manages to blossom from afar, her clumsiness is delightful as well as her encounters with her good and too serious neighbor, Nick. It's well written, addictive and undeniably "feel good", perfect in this very gloomy period.
I haven't yet read a book by Avery Flynn or Tracy Woff that i didn't thoroughly enjoy. Back in the Burbs is no exception... I adored this book and finished it in a day. From the banter between Mallory and Nick to the slow burn romance, I would recommend this to anyone looking for a good laugh out loud rom-com.
This is one of the most hilarious books I've read all year!! I couldn't put it down once I started and I hated that it had to end. I've never liked HOA rules so I totally relate to Mallory and her desire to tell the HOA where they can shove the stack of violations she inherited along with Great-aunt Maggie's house. This book has everything to make it a perfect rom-com. The characters are relatable and funny, there's one tragedy after another for our main character, and a enemy to friends to romance between Mallory and Nick that will keep you laughing. I loved that Mallory was able to get her HEA. And I love Mallory's rule for surviving in the Burbs, "There is nothing that YouTube and a glass of wine can't conquer."
Nothing like a hot-mess redemption story make you cry and make you laugh, right?
In Back in the Burbs, we have a thirty-something divorcee looking to find her grove again. But first, she has some emotional growth and baggage to work out. She's recovering from verbal and emotional abuse, and she has a lot of growth to do before she'll be ready to explore another chance at love.
It was an entertaining read, with some really emotional scenes as well. Overall, very good.
It’s not often that I read a book that had me laughing aloud from start to finish, but Back in the Burbs by Avery Flynn and Tracy Wolff is the perfect example of why rom-coms are my favorite books to read. There’s humor, there’s drama - both romantic and familial, and there’s a slow-burning, yet scorching hot love story. What more could you ask for?!

Review It’s not often that I read a book that had me laughing aloud from start to finish, but Back in the Burbs by Avery Flynn and Tracy Wolff is the perfect example of why rom-coms are my favorite books to read. There’s humor, there’s drama - both romantic and familial, and there’s a slow-burning, yet scorching hot love story. What more could you ask for?!
Fresh from having divorced her cheating scumbag of an ex-husband, Mallory Martin is in need of a fresh start. Luckily (or maybe not-so-luckily), she learns her aunt left her her house in her will. To say it’s a fixer upper is a bit of an understatement. The combination of her aunt’s hoarding problem and the lack of upkeep on the house means Mallory has her work cut out for her to make the house livable. But with the help of a flirty contractor, and a handsome (if infuriating) neighbor, Mallory gets started on putting her aunt’s house (and her life) in order.
Whatever mental image I had of Mallory channeling The Property Brothers and renovating her new house in a spectacular fashion dissolved once I realized Mallory I was, in fact, a hot mess. She has baggage on top of baggage, and frequently makes questionable decisions. But her inner monologue and self-deprecating outlook kept me laughing incessantly throughout this chaotic, whirlwind of a journey. Between her home makeover adventures and her not-quite-a-love-triangle romantic escapades, Back in the Burbs is impossible to put down once you get started.
If you're in need of a good laugh, Back in the Burbs is easily one of my favorite reads of the year. It's outrageously funny and continuously entertaining, and the romance is oh-so-swoon-worthy. Not only did these characters and this storyline leave a lasting impression, but the authors ensured that I’ll never look at Lord of the Rings the same way again. I loved every single sentence of every single page and I would gladly tell anyone I know to read this book.
☀️I am a true believer that in fiction and in real life, everything good you do, comes back to you. If you think everything is bad in your life, it's because something good is coming to you. ☀️
Just like that is the story of Mallory, a passionate and goal-driven woman. Who after years of supporting the one who claimed to be the love of her life, removes her from her future, leaving Mallory with a lot of problems. But she didn't count on Mallory having an ace up her sleeve, although to be honest, neither did she.
This is a story that you enjoy watching Mallory's growth because you can mirror her and move forward as she does. She is an amazing woman and life sends her many challenges, which she overcomes because she is an oak. I admire her with all my being and I would love to be as strong as she is. I would like to think that Mallory is the strength and talent of Avery and Tracy because their essence is in her.
Life doesn't give you challenges that you can't overcome and Mallory not only does, but she finds that which she sought for a long time. And her prize is one that many of us wish we could get.
💫
I screamed, sang, danced, got angry, cursed, and had fun like I haven't had with a book in a long time. Avery and Tracy are a dynamic duo and a total thrill bomb, they did what they pleased with my heart. Congratulations and thank you for so much.
Personal note, Watch out for the HOA

This was not romance to me, it was more women's fiction. Had it been labeled women's fiction I probably would have liked it more. The romance was not the biggest theme at all. I had a hard time with Mallory because it really took so long for her to show any growth. She also didn't really act her age at all. I LOVED Nick though, and he was a total book saver!
Really fun read! A contemporary Rom Con Enemies to Lovers read that will have you feeling anger for Mallory and far dirtier thoughts for Nick.
I found myself not able to put down this read. There was real life relatable drama, shitty ex's, hot handy men, HOA issues, and hot neighbors. Felt anger and sadness for Mallory and Nick but their chemistry was fantastic!
Worth a read!
When Mallory discovers that everything in her life needs an overhaul she heads to the burbs. Will she finally find her voice when her Aunt leaves her the one thing she never expected?
Sometimes all it takes to stand up to those set on watching you fail is to find your voice and someone to believe in your ability.
I love that this book delves into self discovery and layers the pain with humor.
I'm always up for an Avery Flynn and Tracy Wolff book. The collaboration is even better. I can't wait to see what they cook up next!
This book was such a fun book. This was more than a romance. This story was about that quirky girl we all are, finding her way back to herself. It’s about a woman’s journey to reclaim who she was before men come in a ruin you.
It’s also her finding out that all men aren’t the same. That men make mistakes and can be forgiven. That we are all just trying to figure out this life thing.
Mallory is a truly phenomenal character. She makes me want to embrace my me even more than I already do. I laughed so many times in this story. I wish we could’ve seen Aunt Maggie alive.
Nick is the perfect hero. He is a broody grumpy man bear with a heart of gold. Which is always my favorite kind of hero. I loved that lord of the rings becomes their sex movie it just makes everything.
Mallory needed this journey to discover herself and that love doesn’t have to be a crutch. That needing the love of someone is not wrong. We make our own choices with everything, but we can never control love.
Back in the Burbs is a laugh-out-loud romcom with a floundering middle-aged divorcee, a charming love interest, and enough amusing antics to put a smile on your face. But don't let its adorable cover and quirky synopsis fool you, there's a lot of emotional baggage here to sift through as well, such as emotional and verbal abuse from an ex-spouse, an eccentric aunt with a hoarding (and mental health) problem, and adultery. I got teary-eyed quite a few times in between laughs due to some unexpectedly poignant scenes, so be prepared to experience a full range of emotions while reading this one.
Back in the Burbs started out as a strong 5 star read for me, but somewhere around the middle, the plot did get a bit convoluted with excess drama I'm not really sure added anything to the story. The ending did wrap up rather quickly, as well. I definitely wanted to see certain plot points conclude with more insight and detail. Still, I did really enjoy this book---mostly because of Mr. Nick H. It's a good reminder that it's never too late to start over, and second chances are priceless.
3.5/5
Back in the Burbs had me laughing so hard through out the entire book! I adore the way Wolff and Flynn put together irresistible comedies that incorporate so many inner dialogue moments with characters thinking things I’ve actually thought or would think in those situations. Their combination of feisty, independent female characters with men who love to care for their women is a fantastic combination and one I re-visit regularly with these two ladies! Like this scene about the tall grass. Mallory is fighting with her nosey neighbor who keeps harping no her about getting the grass mowed down and she’s had enough of his belittling her about it!
“That shock hits a little close to home. Karl spent too many of the last few years making me feel unattractive, and I snap back, ‘Yeah, a date. And if all goes well, we’re going to come back here and have wild sex in my tall grass.'”
To give a quick overview, this book is about Mallory. A woman who just found out her husband is cheating on her and she wants a divorce. But her parents come from one of those wealthy elite groups that doesn’t look positively on divorces and is continuously trying to convince Mallory that she isn’t anything without her husband and she just needs to forgive him. BUT, Mallory’s aunt Maggie recently passed away and left her dilapidated house in Mallory’s care and this is one of those moments where something she never expected, gives her everything she needs to stand up for herself and live life the way she wants to, And she does!
“She sounds shocked, but I don’t care. I’m tired of everyone in my life telling me that everything is my fault. I know I’m not perfect. I know I make mistakes. A part of me even acknowledges that I wasn’t entirely blameless in the failure of my marriage. Still, everything that went wrong didn’t happen because my fucking underwear wasn’t sexy enough.”
But her adventure is not without some serious trials and a whole lot of self reflection. But thankfully she’s moving into the suburbs where everyone will be watching what she’s doing and privacy becomes a thing of the past where her very handsome neighbor wants to help her fix the house and bring some happiness into her life. But boy oh boy is it a rough ride for these two hard headed individuals!
An amazing cast of characters and an even more important underlying theme that it’s OK to let people care about you and care for you. Don’t be a doormat, be yourself and if someone doesn’t like who you are, that’s OK too. Wolff and Flynn remind us that we should surround ourselves with people that we care about and those that care about us and that it;s alright to be a little quirky! Even if that means decorating your yard in flamingos!
With so much to love about this story, there’s no reason I wouldn’t recommend it, but I will tell you that one of the more powerful moments in this book was when Mallory finally starts to stand up for herself and begins letting her emotions out. Resulting in telling off a lot of people in her life that she’s held back on out of respect for who they are in her life. But if you’ve ever been pushed around by people throughout your life, you know how important that moment is when you finally tell them where they can shove it and the way that feels afterwards. How much lighter your shoulders and chest feel after letting it all hang loose.
This blurb got me wanting more even before I started the book.
I’ve read only one book by Avery Flynn (Awk-Weird) and as for Tracy Wolff? I haven’t been her biggest fan when it comes to her PNR but I have really enjoyed her contemporary romance books.
I really enjoyed reading Back in the Burbs. It’s sweet, fun and made me laugh out loud on so many moments.
Overall, This collaboration by two wonderful authors gave us an equally wonderful romcom!

Another Blogger (Storiesandcoffee) started her review with “why am I such a sucker for hot mess thirty-something redemption story?” My answer to this is, how could you not be when it’s written by these 2 amazing authors! You either love Avery Flynn and Tracy Wolff, or you’re wrong. Back in the Burbs is so laugh out loud incredible you won’t be able to put it down. It has some real-world stuff in there like overcoming trauma and emotional baggage. But overall, this book is light-hearted and fun with tons of witty banter. The characters were excellent and very well developed. I absolutely loved everything about this book! I know this review is short but there’s only so many ways to say “amazing” and “read this now”. Thank you, Valentine PR, for gifting me this book in exchange for an honest review.
5 heart-warming stars!

This is one hilarious ride. Mallory is 35 and her life is literally falling apart. So many things happen in this story, there is never a dull moment. But what you really need to know is Mallory is looking to find her way. She meets a man who is everything she needs, yet he shows up a bit too early. Mallory just hasn't worked through everything yet. Mallory is a fun character as she looks at everything with humor. I did laugh out loud, also shed some tears. Fantastic story and hard to put down!
If you need a good laugh and after the year we've had we definitely do, well this is the book. When it was advertised as a laugh out loud Romcom they were 100% accurate.
It all starts with Aunt Maggie, she was always the quirky and fun part of Mallory's life. Now with her cheating husband and her law office job gone she needs some luck in her life. Aunt Maggie has passed away and they are at the reading of her will. Aunt Maggie leaves Mallory her house back in the suburbs. While Mallory's very controlling parents want her to sell the house Mallory thinks this is just what she needs to start over. So let the fun begin and boy does it. You need to come to the 'burbs to meet her long ago friend, the HOT contractor, and the uptight HOA member and neighbor, This cast of characters help keep Mallory on her toes and us laughing out loud. I can't recommend this book enough, it is so funny and worth the crazy looks you get while reading and laughing.
