I’ve read a couple of books from Avery, but this was my first one from Tracy and as soon as I read the blurb I wanted to read it. While this was an enjoyable read, and I must say I laughed out loud with this story, this wasn’t what I was expecting, at all. The book is extremely well written, but it’s more a woman’s fiction than a full romance. It’s much more about how Mallory got her groove back, than her relationship with Nick.
I don’t fault at Mallory for trying to get her shit together, after finding her (ex)husband in a compromising situation with his paralegal, she is broke and back to living with her controlling parents. So when she inherits a old house from her Great Aunt, it’s time to renovate the house and maybe her life too. That’s when Nick’s show up, he is her neighbor and a slight grumpy, sticky to the rules but oh so handsome.
I wish that Nick was feature more in the story and be able to get to know him better, and although he was the hero, this was Mallory’s story through and through, I felt like he was secondary to it all. Throughout the end of the book things started to get more romantic and steamier. All in all, if couldn’t notice, it wasn’t 100% my type of book, but it was a funny and entertaining one. If you enjoy a more woman’s fiction story than romance, this might be for you.
First, I absolutely adore the cover of this one which is why I was so excited to pick it up! The storyline kept me engaged, especially the cute and funny bits. The parts that were a miss for me were towards the end, when issues Mallory was experiencing could have been easily fixed with an honest conversation. I just wanted to yell at her like I would a best friend who can’t seem to snap out of it! Still a solid read, especially because Nick was a BABE!
I love love loved this book! I like Mallory, I even like Nick.
I hate the epilogue and would advise people not to read it.
But I seriously loved this for what it was, and extra-loved Mallory's glow up.
Mallory’s life sucks right now. After catching her soul-sucker of a husband with another woman, she is jobless, homeless, broke, and dealing with a nasty divorce. She then discovers that her eccentric Aunt Maggie left her a house in the suburbs and Mallory decides that this is the opportunity for her fresh start. The only problem is that her Aunt Maggie was a closeted hoarder and her house has racked up dozens of HOA violations. Mallory will have to fight tooth and nail for the fresh start of her dreams!
Back in the Burbs is a delightful and fun romp of a rom-com! I always love enemies-to-lovers and opposites attract, but I loved it even more with Mallory and Nick in their picture-perfect suburban neighborhood. There was so much witty banter and hilarious situations (i.e. a trunk full of sex toys) that I was laughing the entire time, but once the steam hit I was sold! There was a secondary storyline that kinda threw me off a little, but it didn’t take too much away from my enjoyment of the story!
I definitely recommend this one for a funny, palate-cleanser type of romance! Perfect for fans of Nina Bocci, Sarah Adams, and Sarah Morgenthaler.
Thank you so much to Entangled Publishing and Netgalley for the gifted copy in exchange for my honest review.
For a book with such a cute cover, it sure evoked some deep feelings of me needing revenge on a few villains in the story! Rest assured though, it all works out, all while having laugh out loud moments as well as emotional ones. The story line was a bit different than anything I had ever read so it was a lot of fun to dive into!
Mallory is going through a divorce from a major scum bag and inherits a house from her aunt. The house turns out to be a big undertaking, and that’s where the fun begins. Mallory starts out as being kind of a doormat and her first moment of defiance is standing up to her controlling father and keeping the house instead of selling. I did enjoy seeing Mallory get a backbone and start standing up to people, but she almost takes it too far trying to be the opposite of who she was. She came off as a bit immature in her reactions to some conflict. We then have Nick, her straight laced, rule following, too hot for his own good neighbor, who is just the perfect guy but Mallory has to get out of her own way before that can work out.
I feel like although there was a HEA and everything was technically resolved, I could’ve used a little bit more detail and depth in the end. There was also a new friend of Mallorys that I really liked but we never hear about again after their last interaction. I wouldn’t knock a star off for this because it’s just my personal preference, but the entire story is told from Mallory’s POV and I really prefer having a dual POV.
Overall, it was a fun read that I enjoyed and would love to read more from these two authors together!
If you need a good escape from reality, this is it! Back in the Burbs was everything I was hoping for from this dynamic pair of writers, and more!!! I adore all of Avery Flynn's books, so I knew I would be all-in with this one, but from the first to last page I was a goner. So many shenanigans with the HOA and surrounding busy-bodies, you're guaranteed to get a good ab workout from laughter. With plenty of witty banter, tender moments of realization and an underlying romance with the enemy, this has been quite the delightful escape from the norm. Put this on your must-read list for 2021!
From the get go Flynn & Wolf had readers cheering on Mallory. Newly divorced after catching her soon to be ex-husband cheating on her, she inherits her favorite aunt's disaster of a house...in the suburbs. And for a NYC girl that is a little culture shock shall we say. Mallory finds her gumption to stand up to her parents after they are adamant that she sell the house. She embarks on a new journey of finding herself, making new friends, and learning who she is! First order of business is finding a contractor….oh, and dealing with the HOA. There is also a hottie across the street that she should not be drawn to, but totally can’t get him out of her mind.
I found myself laughing out loud with Mallory through the entire book, and also like a good friend cringing and shaking my head at her antics. I also think so many people can relate to Mallory. She lost her way, worked for so many years to make others happy and do all the things that she is “supposed” to do, but never thought about herself. I also maybe wanted to throat punch so many people in her life. And her ex-husband is the absolute worst. Like all of the exes I’ve read about he is president of the douchebag society. And the hottie across the street, Nick. Well, he is so easy to love. How he just effortlessly allows Mallory the time and space to grow, he is also there to provide back up when she needs him. There is a walk of shame scene that was the best. Nick and Mallory are just so well suited for each other, she is quirky and he is solid and they just balance each other out.
If you are on the hunt for a funny romcom with a heroine that works hard to find herself, and helps others along the way this is your next read! Also, it is hilarious and just makes you happy because when good things happen to good people it leaves you smiling! Great job, Avery & Tracy….I have a list of characters that I need their story next!!!
Back in the Burbs was a fun read about a woman down on her luck and trying to get herself back together.
Mallory is newly divorced and has just moved back in with her parents. Her parents that think she should go groveling back to her husband even after he cheated. After she inherits a falling down old house from her Great Aunt the story gets good. It's a hoarders nightmare but she finds so much more than a collection of items that needed to be tossed away long ago. With HOA and family problems that keep coming at her Mallory is tested in every way. This book was a good easy read with a story I enjoyed.
Who’s a sucker for a hot mess thirty something redemption story? Yup this girl right here 🙋🏽♀️

Back in the Burbs was a solid 4⭐️ read. It had me wanting to shake some sense in the main character but also routing for her to get her happy ending. Oh and I’m here for all the HOA nonsense 🦩
From the very beginning I was fully committed to this book, I swear it takes hold from the very first page. The writing was soooooooo freaking good. I absolutely loved everything about this book.
My emotions were all over the place while reading Back in the Burbs. When I say Tracy Wolff and Avery Flynn was able to capture every emotion. Listen to me, I was happy, sad, confused and angry. Now most of my anger was directed to either Mallory's parents or her butthole of an ex, that man made my temperature rise 😡😡😡
Overall this story was very engaging and enjoyable. This is definitely making one of my top books for 2020😍😍😍
If you're looking for a slow burn, laugh out loud, relatable story then Back in the Burbs is for you. I found myself laughing at some of the witty banter and sayings by different characters. Especially the leads Mallory and Nick. They are a pair the reader sees coming and cheers for throughout the book.
I feel this is a modern love story which many people can relate to based on several different topics covered. The authors did a great job of making Mallory a heroine even when she had been wronged and struggled on many different levels.
I absolutely loved this book and would recommend anyone to read.
Tracy Wolff and Avery Flynn have teamed up to give readers a laugh out loud sexy contemporary romance that had me crying at times I was laughing so much. There were plenty of drama along the way to keep your emotions jumping as well.
I really loved Mallory pretty much from page one and have to say I also had some mad love for grumpy neighbor Nick just as quickly. Mallory is pretty much at her lowest low as Back in the Burbs begins. She recently caught her husband cheating on her, she lost her job in his law firm, and had to move back in with her parents. When she learns her Aunt Maggie left her home to her, Mallory has big goals, and isn't prepared when she arrives, as the home is in major need of repairs, clean out, and HOA violations seem to be never ending.
Mallory is starting over when she moves to Huckleberry Hills. She needs to find a job and then a contractor to help get her new home back in shape. As no one in her family had been in her aunt's home in years, she wasn't prepared to the hoarding her aunt had in her home. That part of the story pretty much broke my heart. Her parents were aware that Maggie had hoarding tendencies, yet hadn't checked on her at all. While Mallory had every right to be completely overwhelmed, I love that as she cleaned out her aunt's home, she had so many fond memories of her aunt as she cleaned out each new room.
Nick aka grumpy neighbor actually ended up being one of my favorite characters in this book. I loved that he was actually friends with Maggie and did all in his power to help her out and take care of her when she was his neighbor. I really loved that Nick and Mallory had some pretty great chemistry from the very first time they met, even if they didn't start off as friends. Part of that was Mallory having trust issues due to how her ex treated her. I really liked that Nick was there to help Mallory along the way with the house, finding her an attorney to battle her ex, and even finding her a perfect job. When Nick and Mallory finally made love for the first time, I had all the happy feels. Their differences and strengths made them such a great couple. My only real problem with this story was Malloy comparing Nick to her ex for way too long. Nick really did go out of his way to take things slow so Mallory would feel comfortable and help her in any way needed. As he was absolutely nothing like her ex, other than also being an attorney, Mallory really made me mad when she compared Nick to her asshat ex.
Back in the Burbs kept me glued to the page pretty much from the moment I picked it up. I don't know about everyone else, but my reading has taken a huge hit since the start of the pandemic. The fact that I pretty much read this book in one day was huge for me, and a testament to this wonderful story. Thank you to both Tracy Wolff and Avery Flynn for giving me the wonderful rom-con in Back in the Burbs!

I enjoyed this book. Though it wasn’t as funny as the other Avery Flynn books that have come out recently it was still well written and enjoyable. I gave it three stars mostly because while I enjoyed it and liked the characters I just didn’t connect to the story or characters. I could have easily put it down and that usually isn’t me. I loved all the strong women in this book and think that was clutch for the storyline.

Back in the Burbs is an enemy to lovers romance (my favorite), by Tracy Wolff and Avery Flynn.
What first drew me to this book was one; I've read Avery Flynn before and think her writing is very witty and funny. Two, the blurb, the enemies to lovers trope, and the cover, because, let's be honest, it is so super cute.
What I loved:
The book is hysterical. I hate feeling like I am giving away spoilers, but the heroine, Mallory, inherits her very eccentric great aunt's home, and it's a mess. Not only is poor Mallory's life a mess, but now she has this house, and you guessed it, an enemy neighbor.
I thought the writing was smart and thoughtful to the characters in the book. A lot is going on, so the authors did a good job of taking care of the story.
I was worried in the beginning that Mallory was going to be a bit of a doormat, but I was very pleasantly surprised that this was not the case. Mallory's character grows throughout the book, and it's so lovely to watch her develop a backbone.
What I didn't love:
The book is wordy and long. This isn't a deal-breaker for me, but sometimes so many descriptions and information that isn't absolutely necessary can become daunting.
There is a lot of side plots going on. To the point that I almost thought they could have written a whole second book just about the Mom and the other secondary characters. It just seemed longer than it had to be.
Overall.
I very much enjoyed Back to the Burbs. It's hilarious, and I loved the heroine, and her character developed. I would recommend this book for anyone looking for a laugh, but settle in because it's not a short and sweet read.
Side-splittingly funny and utterly engrossing, Back in the Burbs is a drama-filled, sweet, and emotional story with unforgettable characters and all the feels!
This was the easiest five stars I’ve ever given. Recently I’ve tried to save the full five stars for books that have made me feel the strongest of emotions and Back in the Burbs most definitely delivered! This book had me laughing out loud at multiple intervals, had me wanting to shake the female lead because she just wouldn’t see what was right in front of her && majorly swooning for the male lead at so many intervals.
Nick and Mallory were major goals when it came to how they met, how their relationship evolved and developed and their happily ever after. There was so much growth within Mallory from the beginning of the book through the end that it was such a pleasure reading this book and I so wish there was a sequel to this book so that I could keep reading about these characters that were so easily to fall in love with.
Overall Grade: ⭐️⭐️⭐️⭐️⭐️
When you read a romantic comedy, do you get a feeling of home? Like, as you’re reading it, there is something comforting in its cadence and revelation of the story. I mean, a romantic comedy isn’t without its strife. Inevitably there is an issue between the hero and heroine, but it is always tempered in sweetness or hilarity or absurdity. This is truly the case with Tracy Wolff and Avery Flynn’s Back in the Burbs. As you read this story, you find yourself enraptured with its hero and its heroine’s journey of self-possession that you get lost in the story. When it’s done, you’ll honestly heave a sigh of happiness because from beginning to end, Back in the Burbs is everything you adore about romantic comedies.
Back in the Burbs tells the story of Mallory. Basically, Mallory has hit rock-bottom: she’s left a cheating husband who wants to give her nothing for her sacrifice of ten years, getting him through law school and setting up his law business, making it incredibly successful. Additionally, her great-aunt has died leaving her her home in the suburbs of New Jersey. Unfortunately, this isn’t a great gift because Aunt Maggie has several HOA violations on her house, it has taxes in arrears, and Mallory finds out quickly that Aunt Maggie had a bit of a hoarding issue. Mallory has years of being brow-beaten by her parents and her husband, and she’s not sure she has it in her to overcome her challenges. Until she realizes that can. Deciding to move forward with fixing her aunt’s house, she meets her grumpy, rule-following neighbor, Nick. He has no problem telling her that she needs to mow her lawn. However, as the days progress, Nick and Mallory feel drawn to each other. Is it possible that the neighborhood hottie could be interested in her? Even more, is it possible for Mallory to find the person she was before her husband?
Mallory is this archetypal romantic comedy heroine. She is beleaguered by her life experiences. She’s quirky, loves to break rules, and has a zest for life that she has to rediscover over the course of the story. She represents so many women and men who lose themselves in a relationship, and she doesn’t want to make the same mistake. Wolff and Flynn make her so adorable that you can’t help but root for her to succeed and fall in love with Nick, but Wolff and Flynn also make you work for their coupling. To be honest, this book is a slow-burn, and I thought it allowed for Nick and Mallory to grow a friendship before a relationship. It allows for the story to develop in ways that give Mallory the space to begin to know herself again without having a man help her do it. Instead, she grows into herself again on her own terms. This also potentially derails a future with Nick, but that is part of the growing process for Wolff and Flynn’s heroine, which I think is insightful in her characterization.
Since we don’t have Nick’s point of view except through Mallory’s perspective, he is fairly one-dimensional, but he’s everything you adore about a romance hero: he is insightful, kind, seemingly grumpy except he is a “white knight” as Mallory states. There just isn’t enough emotional development for Nick that this story is clearly about Mallory and her overcoming her past. And there is a lot to overcome between the ex-husband and her parents.
There are also so many great moments of humor in Back in the Burbs. The house and Aunt Maggie’s hoarding alone offer you many moments of laughing out loud.
I highly enjoyed Back in the Burbs. I began reading it, looking forward to Tracy Wolff and Avery Flynn’s collaboration. I never expected to fall so deeply in love with Nick and Mallory. But I did, and I think you will too.
Loving this new series from Tracy and Avery! Mallory has always done what her parents have wanted and thought what was best for her by marrying who she thought was the safe choice and supporting him, until she catches him cheating on her and her life is turned upside down. After the death of her great-aunt who she always adored, she’s unsure where to take the next step in life after losing her home and income due to her breakup and impending divorce, but somehow her aunt knew and left Mallory her home in her will. Trying to get the home up to code for the HOA since the home is in the suburbs, a place Mallory isn’t the biggest fan of, she meets her neighbor Nick who is a stickler for the rules. As these two butt heads, it’s truly an opposite attract situation, but also these two help the other grow and move on from the hurt and pain they’ve experienced. Nick helps Mallory with her divorce and getting what she deserves, as well as Mallory helping Nick move past the devastating past he had. Things were a little prolonged in the plot, but overall, I enjoyed the book, especially the surprises throughout the storyline, but it made the book that much more enjoyable while reading! Can’t wait to see if these characters continue!
I voluntarily read and reviewed an Advance Reader Copy of this book.
This book surprised me in an unexpected way! I happen to be a fan of Avery Fylnn and have read a few of her books in the past but this one surpassed all the other books she's written. I haven't read Tracey Wolff books but I would be interested in trying her other books. This book shows you when you hit rock bottom with motivation you can surpass your own goals and become an even greater person. This is not a fluffy romance and I'm thrilled about that. The heat was just right! I highly recommend reading this book!
She's going through a divorce by a husband who gaslighted her for their entire marriage. She gets a meet cute with a neighbor who starts off as an enemy and turns into a great relationship.

Divorced, back at the parents, and in your thirties?! Yep, Mallory is on the hot mess express, and I loved every minute. I'm a huge Avery Flynn fan because she always makes me laugh out loud while reading, and this book was no exception. I enjoyed the journey Mallory went on after the bad hand life has dealt her. Cue Nick for all the swoony vibes. I wanted a little more romance, but if you like a story about a woman figuring it all out on her own, you'll definitely like this one!
