I was immediately sucked into Back in the Burbs. Right from the get go I wanted to be Mallory's friend and supporter. Mallory has spent her whole life doing what other people wanted her to do and after being completely overrun by her soon to be ex-husband she finally takes a stand.
One of the things I liked best about Back in the Burbs is that even though Mallory desperately wanted to be independent in every way it didn't happen as planned, which makes total sense. Throughout the book she developed more and more and became the person she was truly meant to become. I also enjoyed Mallory's journey through her Aunts belongings (of which there is A LOT). There were some tender moments, but also some funny ones.
I adored Nick so much. Even when he when he took over or tried to take over you know he did it with the best of intentions, and that once learning more about Mallory he realized why some of that went wrong. I felt like they were such a good pairing and he was the perfect guy to show Mallory not all guys are jerks.
There is a side story I don't want to spoil, but I thought it made a wonderful addition to Mallory's life and her story.
My only issue with the book is the ending felt a little rushed, but I so thoroughly enjoyed that it's not even that big of a deal.
Back in the Burbs is the new rom-com from what I am dubbing the dynamic duo of Avery Flynn and Tracy Wolff. While they are both fairly new-to-me authors, I’m already a fan of both of their works, so diving into this book was a no-brainer for me.
In the midst of a painful divorce, NYC girl Mallory inherits her great aunt’s house in suburbia. While it holds bittersweet memories for her, it’s a veritable disaster. Faced with no job, an anemic bank account, and a hoarder’s paradise inside the newly-inherited house, she decides to pull up her big girl panties, throw up a one-fingered salute at her parents, her vindictive almost ex-husband, and her new community’s HOA and make the house her new home despite the evil HOA breathing down her neck. What follows is hilarious banter coupled with some real emotion and character growth, all within the backdrop of the generalization of today’s suburbia.
Back in the Burbs is a true gem. The combination of the witty banter, the soccer moms of suburbia, and the chemistry between Mallory and Nick makes this a page-turner. Even the minor characters play significant roles at one time or another throughout the story. And you can’t discount the friendship with Mallory’s former high school acquaintance, the fabulously flashy Angie. We all need an Angie in our lives at some point. Someone who won’t let us wallow, pushes us to get out of our shell, and does everything they can to help us bounce back when we hit rock bottom. In a nutshell, a true friend.
I couldn’t devour this book fast enough. Both main characters have something painful and life-changing they are facing or have faced, Mallory most recently. And while this is a rom-com, there’s no lack of emotional angst, either. As a bonus, these two amazing authors have written together so well that you can’t pick out who wrote what. It’s a beautifully woven-together story about what happens when life throws you the most unexpected and painful curveballs at you all at once (and what happens when you add wine––and more!––to it) and how a once strong woman gets her life back and triumphs in the end. A must-read for sure!
I give Back in the Burbs by Avery Flynn and Tracy Wolff 5 out of 5 stars!
A beautiful story about how a strong independent woman turned her life for the better, whilst falling in love in the process!
This story is about Mallory; her life is a mess; she's going through a divorce, her aunt who she was very close to has passed away. Her aunt has left her, her house and Mallory decides to keep it and restore it and live in it. However, it is not a simple task to do! She has a mile-long to-do list, and her grumpy neighbour keeps grumbling about the long grass!
Back in the Burbs is my new favourite from Avery Flynn! I just love this collaboration between Avery Flynn and Tracy Wolff! I really admired Mallory because even though things were looking far from good she kept pushing until she finally got her way!
I received a free copy of this book and am voluntarily leaving a review.

Back in the Burbs by Avery Flynn and Tracy Wolff delivered the bitter truths of life wrapped in the sweet coating of humor and wit. It was an enchanting read full of fun, emotions and chemistry. It was entertaining and a true escape in form of a contemporary romantic comedy.
Mallory has spent the large part of her life helping her husband build up his law practice sacrificing everything. Only to find out that he is a cheating and vile person. Now she is penniless. Jobless. On verge of an unfair divorce. Just then she inherits the house of her favourite aunt. And when she reaches the picture like suburb, she finds the whole house is in shambles, full of things her aunt hoarded over years, violating 1001 HOA rules and going to cost her tons of money in taxes and everything. As she starts her new journey, she meets her neighbour Nick. Strict for rules, super organized and super smart Nick. Will Nick help her or leave her in greater mess?
So I absolutely love Mallory. This woman is my soulmate. She gets kicked down over and over again..and she gets up over and over again. Her witty banters are EPIC. I mean I could just read her inner monologues for ages. I didn't know if I should start crying while laughing. Self deprecation is an art and she has it down. But her determination to take charge of her life is absolutely amazing. And wow. She did turn her life around or what? She went through the painful process of looking into the mirror and finding her own faults and then embracing them. She finally put the past where it belongs. In the past.
Because she would have missed someone like Nick otherwise. Oh my heart..this man. Like how perfect is this man. He comes across a bit grumpy, brooding, strict and no fun but when he opens up, that Nick is pure unavoidable dangerous perfection. He is kind. He is loyal. He is genuinely good person. He showed Mallory that she needs to leave her baggage and take risk. His personality is in contrast to Mallory's slightly weird and colourful one. And they match and balance so well. The chemistry is fantastic. A lot of teasing. A lot of flirting. And a lot of smouldering things!
Back in the Burbs by Tracy Wolff and Avery Flynn took me to an amazing ride. I laughed, I swooned, I cheered, I clapped and I was completely lost in this journey.
I reviewed an early copy voluntarily
The only thing as messy as Mallory's life is the house she inherits from her great aunt Maggie. The house gives Mallory a much-needed place to stay, away from her parents and her can't be soon enough ex-husband. As she makes progress on the house and checks things off her personal to-do list, she learns more about herself and remembers who she was before she sacrificed too much to her marriage. The hot grumpy neighbor turns out to be more hot and less grumpy than the first impression.
I loved the chemistry between the couple. It's a nice slow burn, and I just wanted them to get there faster. There are lots of fun surprises in this book, great dialogue, and all the characters are real and flawed. Very enjoyable quick read, perfect for vacation.
A laugh out loud, cry in your beer and love hard kind of book that will have your attention from hilarious start to emotional finish. You won't want to put it down, and you'll wish there were a few more chapters because you are enjoying this crazy cast so much. Bravo!
Mallory is an awesome character that is so relatable. She has just had her world snatched out from under her and there's no time like the present to put on her big girl pants and forge her way through the diamond in the rough she just got handed.
Cheating louse of a husband pushing all the right buttons to see a side of her he's never seen ... check! Annoying neighbor being much too sexy for his own good and making her lust when she really just wants to wallow ... check! Family members coming out of the woodwork to add their drama on to her own ... check!
I highly recommend this book to anyone who enjoys a rom-com with lots of heart and emotions. I wish I could see this group again because they were a whole lot of fun!
You know that book that you can't stop thinking about - the one you find yourself recommending to anyone- The one you wish you could read all over again for the first time? This is that book for me. One of the most beautifully told romances I’ve read in 21. It's this kind of story that stays with you. A romantic tale of courage and growth, of second chances, of starting over. I read this book, cover to cover in one sitting, Tracey Wolff and Avery Flynn managed to keep me in suspense from start till the last page. They wrote a book that gave me all the feels, checked all my boxes rare gem of a story!
Nick and Mallory are such outstanding characters, I connected so so easily and immediatedly with them, and I loved it. They're not flawless, they're honest, true life-like characters that brightened my day. I recommend this gem of a story, 5+ stars.
I already love both Tracy Wolff and Avery Flynn so when I was gifted a copy of their new book Back in the Burbs, it went right to the top of my TBR list. I really enjoyed this book. Mallory was relatable to me as a character who’s life just doesn’t seem to want to go as planned. I loved the backstory of her crazy aunt Maggie too. I felt the romance and heat were a little lite, but overall an enjoyable read.
This was one of those times I trusted the author before I was sold on the story. Single POV, midlife crisis, women's fiction doesn't tend to be my jam but this was UTTERLY HILARIOUS. I mean just - witty and honest and I laughed out loud multiple times. Mallory is lovely and flawed and at times frustrating and irritating and it is AWESOME. She pops of the page with sass and quiet bad**sery. I did knock it down half a star just because it felt terribly long at times and the cast felt very large and mildly unwieldy at times. I am curious if this the start of a series or a one-shot.

I received a complimentary copy of this book. Opinions expressed in this review are completely my own.
Mallory was starting her life over and the last thing she expected was inheriting her great aunt’s home and Nick. Mallory & Nick were imperfectly perfect for each other. I loved beyond words their chemistry and banter.
I have been reading Avery Flynn for years and I have always loved her work. This is the first book that I read by Tracy Wolff and I would definitely read more by her in the future. Flynn & Wolff delivered a great story with plenty of heart & humor.
A great romantic comedy that I highly recommend!
I voluntarily reviewed this book.
Where are all my Crave lovers at? Oh boy do I have your next read. Tracy and Avery deliver with all the snark and fun that we absolutely love and swoon for in her Crave series along with a kickass and kick butt female lead. I laughed so much reading this book. It was absolutely the Covet hangover cure everyone needs right about now. I love how we get to read as Mallory takes back her power in literally every aspect of the word in all parts of her life. If you enjoy strong females with a side of snark you’ll love Back in the Burbs.
Back in the Burbs is a great romantic comedy
“Back in the Burbs” is an enemies-to-friends-to-lovers romantic comedy that you won’t be able to put down!
What you need to know about “Back in the Burbs”:
✔ Enemies to Lovers
✔ First Person Narration by Mallory
✔ Romantic Comedy
✔ Lots of secrets in the suburbs
✔ Hot grumpy neighbor Nick
✔ Mallory who is in the middle of a divorce
✔ Complete Standalone
Several years ago I suddenly found myself the inheritor of my late uncle’s house. I came to discover that he was a hoarder. So, in a matter of a couple of days, I moved my entire life from my cool little apartment in a trendy neighborhood in the city to several acres in an unfamiliar and loaded-with-stuff house in the country. All this is to say: this book gave me flashbacks!
In “Back in the Burbs”, Mallory inherits her Aunt Maggie’s home in the New Jersey suburbs which has eleventy billion HOA violations, is filled to the brim with EVERYTHING and on which she will have to pay a sizeable inheritance tax in a few months. Her parents encourage her to sell her Aunt’s legacy but because Mallory is in the middle of a terrible divorce, has lost everything: including her job and home, she decides not to sell.
In addition, Mallory has a grumpy new neighbour named Nick who sets off sparks every time he comes near and her unsupportive parents want her to go back to her cheating husband.
Mallory’s life is a mess. She’s tired of being the doormat she was with her soon-to-be ex, Karl, and wants to live like her fun and freewheeling Aunt Maggie.
The more Mallory gets to know Nick, the less grumpy he seems and the more he helps her out. But her life just keeps getting more and more complicated.
Mallory vowed she would never need another man but is that a promise she can really keep?
I loved all the relationships in this book. They were complicated, real and messy. They took time and work to build but they were ultimately so worth it.
Mallory is such a great character. She is overwhelmed and having to deal with a lot of change, the emotional fall-out of her marriage and with the disappointment of her parents. She really steps up and becomes empowered and handles almost everything even while freaking out.
Nick is a dream guy. I just fell for him from the start. His (at first) grumpy exterior covers this cinnamon roll hero who is there for everyone. (sigh) I loved his HOA boss, neat-as-a-pin, rule follower falling for the free spirit, mess-in-progress that is Mallory.
I didn’t want this book to end! I enjoyed these characters too much! Avery Flynn and Tracy Wolff work seamlessly together to create an empowering, cheerful, hug of a book with a romance that is sweet, hot and probably violates several HOA regulations.

What an utter delight this book was!
I laughed, I sighed, I wanted to hug Mallory a number of times, and I dreamed of a tall handsome man in a suit.... Nick was delightful and I wish I had a neighbour like him. ;)
There are a few hard topics in this story but the main character's humour, resilience and determination helped ease it.
Back in the Burbs by Avery Flynn & Tracy Wolf is a hilarious chick lit romance.
Mallory Martin is a thirty-five-year-old woman that is in the process of a messy divorce. On top of that, she is unemployed, broke, and
in the middle of an existential crisis. It's safe to say that she had better days in her life. Her favorite aunt, Maggie O'Malley left
her in her will the house at Huckleberry Hills. Despite everyones' opinion she decided to keep it and make a new start. Of course, the
house was in really bad shape and she had not left enough savings in the bank. It crossed her mind to give up and go back but slowly
her luck was turning. She met an old friend, who introduced her to a great contractor, and the grumpy neighbor she met on her first day
there begun to warm up to her. Mallory with just a few days back in the burbs and had managed to reaccess her life choices and land
a wonderful/sexy man. Life was finally looking good!!!
It's such a great book. It has an interesting plot filled with funny and entertaining moments. It's an enemies to lovers rom-com combined
with a little divorcee drama. The lines in this book are phenomenal. It's a page-turner for sure, I had a hard time putting it down.
The characters were simply amazing. Nick was a hotty and a gentleman. Mallory was a kind-hearted person who put everyone else above her
and was ready to help anytime. I loved how different they were, he followed the rules and was organized whereas she was a complete mess
in her life. They had intense chemistry in and out of bed. I loved their interactions in general but mostly their first few.
Back in the Burbs is a book that you should have in your collection. If you need a good laugh and a romantic story you should buy it.
I will rate it with 5 stars.
In the book we meet Mallory, who has lost herself in past years. She hasn't been living the life she had wanted. So when the opportunity to move comes she takes her chances. She moves to suburbs to her a house that her great-aunt left her. First time in a long time she doesn't do what everybody around her wants her to do, but does what she wants to do.
The house is in far worse shape than she thought, but luckily she meets a contractor who's willing to help her to get the house fixed. There's also a hot neighbor, who is very active to pointing out all the HOA violations her house is having.
Slowly, but surely Mallory is getting back on her feet. She battles with too tall grass, she battles with her ex about divorce, she battles with her parents, she battles with income and she battles with her feelings towards men around her.
I believe that there are tons of Mallorys out there. Those people who have lost their selves in order to make someone else happy. That's a sad thing. I was incredibly happy to see how Mallory finally stood up for herself. I liked the way how Mallory found herself again. It made me happy.
This is a romantic comedy that will make you laugh out loud. It gives you joy and melts your heart. You feel warm and happy after reading. It's a quick summer read. The characters are well written, the story flows forward. The authors manage to get some feelings out of the readers, feelings like announce towards Mallory's family, happiness because Mallory is finally doing what she wants. That's a sign of a good book.
From start to finish this storyline captured me. It didn’t feel like I was reading a story but like I was part of the story, walking among the characters.
Mallory is my spirit animal. I love her. She’s gone through some trauma and comes out like a fighter. She’s fierce. She learns to stand up for herself and throughout the novel learns what a healthy relationship is!
I have to admit that I caught myself cackling out loud through most of this novel. If I didn’t outright cackle, I was snickering. While this novel portrays Mallory’s recovery of losing a loved one, being betrayed by a lover, and having to cope with the circumstances they’ve thrusted upon her, the author writes in a lot of comedic relief and lightness in which made this novel enjoyable to read.
I really enjoyed this book!
I think I only have one complaint and that is that...when characters do a sudden 180° on their personalities with no sort of lead up...it can be a bit jarring.

I loved this book! It was so cute and sweet! It was fast paced and I read it in one sitting. It had to the right amount of steam and I’m such a sucker for happily ever afters! Romance fans this is a must read!
Thank you to Entangled Publishing for an advanced copy in exchange for an honest review.
Mallory has lost it all...her marriage, her NYC condo, her job and her savings. Down on her luck, she's forced to slink back to the Jersey suburbs to live with her parents. Sigh. But much to her surprise, Mallory's great-aunt Maggie leaves her dilapidated house to Mallory in her will. While her parents want her to sell it and move on with her life, Mallory's tired of being pushed around by everyone, so she decides to keep the house, along with the all the HOA violations, structural damage and rooms filled to the brim with junk. Mallory is determined to not only fix up the house, but also fix up her life. Throw in Mr. Nosy HOA from across the street, a family secret years in the making and bad luck galore and you have yourself an entertaining story.
I am a sucker for anything Avery Flynn writes. I just love her books! This book did not disappoint, but it is definitely different from some of her previous stories. I really enjoyed Mallory's character and the journey she went through. Waking up at 35 and not knowing how you got here is rough, but it is completely relatable! She was bound and determined not to take any help from a man and because of that, she grew tremendously throughout the book.
I also adored Nick. He was so well put together and the attraction with Mallory was instant, despite their hate for each other initially. He pushed without too much force and knew just how to comfort Mallory every time she needed it. I also did not see his story line coming and I appreciated his surprises along the way.
I will say the story does take a little bit to get into, but once you do, it's fantastic. The plot twist 50% of the way totally threw me...I didn't see it coming! I really enjoyed Back in the Burbs!
This is one of the most entertaining romcoms I’ve ever read. The main character Mallory is a 35-yr old who’s in the middle of a messy divorce because of a cheating and manipulative husband who she supported from law school up to when they built his own practice in the city. She comes home to her hometown after her late hoarder aunt leaves her her big expensive house that she has to fix and clean because of the piling HOA notices. She spent her whole working life as the manager of her husband’s practice so she’s now jobless with little money. She couldn’t even afford the already well-discounted bid from a contractor. She then meets her neighbor Nick, a lawyer, who helps her in a lot of ways but she’s not used to this kind of treatment.
I love the entire story and the conversations between the characters. The storyline flowed smoothly and the character building was well-written. It’s funny, relatable, cheesy, steamy, and full of drama. It definitely made me smile and to all people out there who are being mistreated by their partners— you definitely deserve better.
