As a person that has just had bariatric surgery, food planning and choices can be quite difficult and overwhelming when introducing foods back into your diet. This is a nice, simple book about life after bariatric surgery. It has instructions laid out plainly as well as recipes that can be easy to make and eat. This will be a lifesaver for any bariatric patient as they move towards lifelong maintenance..
Thank you to #NetGalley and the publisher, #DK for this ARC in exchange for an honest review.
Very informative with easy to follow recipes. I would recommend this book to anyone who is considering or has had bariatric surgery.
This guide has fantastic information for anyone looking to get or has had bariatric surgery. I purchased this book for a friend and helped her make several recipes after her recovery and she really loves the book and plans to continue using it.
Very interesting and informative cookbook. Besides giving detailed advice about what one should eat and what to avoid (and why), there are numerous recipes so you can prepare your own food. Nothing like eating made from scratch foods as that is the only way to avoid all the man-made chemicals in processed products. This book I’d recommend for those seeking weight loss surgery and read it beforehand in order for them to be better informed about their diet choices. All in all, it is a reference cookbook that is vital as an aid on your journey before and after surgery..
I received an advanced reader copy for free from NetGalley and am voluntarily leaving my review.
Bariatric Diet Guide and Cookbook is a dietary plan, information guide, and cookbook with recipes developed by Dr. Matthew Weiner. Due out 11th May 2021 from Penguin Random House on their DK imprint, it's 192 pages and will be available in paperback and ebook formats.
Current research continues to emphasize how nearly all our body systems depend on our digestive system working as well as possible. Our gut is not only responsible for effective digestion and processing of nutrients, but is also being shown to have far reaching effects on our energy levels, mental health, hormonal balance, mood, and much more. Bariatric surgery obviously has a huge impact on the function of the digestive system. This guide is by an experienced bariatric surgeon who also has a clinic for post-surgical patient supportive care and management.
The introductory chapters are followed by the recipes arranged thematically and roughly chronologically for post-surgery: protein shakes & clear liquids, soft dairy & blended foods, cooked vegetables & blended soups, beans eggs & hearty soups, fish & nuts, and chicken. The third section of the book includes foods and meals for maintenance for a healthy lifestyle change.
Each of the recipes includes an introductory description (including a sidebar with post-surgery serving sizes), ingredients listed in a bullet point sidebar (US measurements only, very few metric conversions), and step by step instructions. The nutritional info is provided in a highlighted footer with the recipe and includes calories, total fat & carbs, fiber, sugar, cholesterol, protein, and sodium. Roughly 20% of the recipes are photographed, and they're done well and clearly. Serving suggestions are attractive and appropriate.
The recipe ingredients themselves are mostly easily sourced and will be available at well stocked grocery stores along with some ingredients being found in international/Asian markets. The book includes an index with partial ingredients list, but does not include a metric conversion table.
Five stars. Very appealing and well written support guide with recipes. I would recommend it for readers undergoing bariatric surgery, or cooks who are supporting someone who is undergoing or has undergone weight loss surgery.
Disclosure: I received an ARC at no cost from the author/publisher for review purposes.
I really really really love the color coding and how this is laid out. It's broken down into different types of foods and how to eat after bariatric surgery, post-op eating, and eating for the rest of your life, which is honestly good advice for everyone and not just bariatric surgery patients. These recipes all look really good, so I'll definitely be trying out quite a few of these!
This is the holy grail of cookbooks if you are planning on having weight-loss surgery. He goes through each step in the process and how to acclimate your body back into real foods. This goes into such minuet detail, far superior than anything I have online on my own. Each stage of post surgery diet is discussed and meal plans are provided. There is more reading in this book than just recipes. Which if you just had weight-loss surgery, or planning on it, you need to understand how to feed your new body optimally. This book shows you everything you need to know. Every recipe tells you how much you should eat for each stage of post surgery you are currently at. This book starts the journey with you and will continue it for the rest of your life. Seriously buy this book now!

I haven’t had weight loss surgery but I have a lot of friends that have. This book is terrific! There’s so many great recipes in here whether you’ve had the surgery or not. There’s recipes for every meal and snacks. The pictures in the book are beautiful and make me want to get into the kitchen. I just wish there were more of them.

This book is a good eye-opener. Want to know what life after bariatric surgery is like? This book lays out a well-thought-out plan of what to eat at each stage of recovery, along with some delicious recipes.
I know very little about the bariatric diet and man was this book ever eye opening! I can see why it might be so easy for someone t fall off this diet as it is extremely hard. This books would be such a good resource though and definitely help to keep them on track.
