Do you ever wonder what happens to someone AFTER they’ve been sentenced? In #couplefoundslain #mikitabrottman does just that. Brian raised in an unloving home with his siblings. Cold. Mentally and emotionally abusive. After days and weeks without sleep his mental illness worsens. He hears voices. He shoots his parents. He’s seventeen. Found criminally insane. What happens? Where does he go?? Mikita tells the tale of Brian’s story so well. I was slightly curious though about his siblings in the aftermath. But. Brian’s story is intriguing. Frightening. #netgalley #netgalleyreview #bookstagram #readersofinstagram #readersofig #truecrime #brianbechtold #murder #criminallyinsane #psychiatrichospital

Couple Found Slain by Mikita Brottman
Wow. What a book. An insightful yet horrifying look at the inside of a mental hospital. I never really knew how hard it would be to get out of one once you were committed.
Brottman deftly depicts how hard it actually is to considered unfit to stand trial or the like, yet once that label is placed on a person, how very extraordinarily hard it is to have that label removed. As with far too many other aspects in life, a patient with money or advocat3es fair far better in the system than those who are poor or alone in the world.
Hopefully, this book can jump-start some difficult conversations and perhaps even bring about some real change for those whose lives are floundering away in a hospital. I am deeply saddened and disturbed by the stories contained within these pages. This book is incredible and it needs to be required reading.
I received a complimentary copy of this book from the publisher and Netgalley.
Couple Found Slain by Brottman shows the reader that there are two sides to the justice system. One is the jail or prison where a murderer will go to spend most if not all of his adult life if found guilty. The second is the psychiatric hospital where those found incompetent by reason of insanity would go to spend his or her time for confessing to a murder. This is the story of Brian Bechtold. A young man who one day killed both his parents in their home in Silver Springs, Maryland. The author goes into great detail about Brian’s life leading up to the murders as well as his incarceration in the psychiatric hospital afterwards. The author, having experience in the mental health field, does an immaculate job of explaining to the reader how the brain reacts to certain stimuli. I found this story to be compelling and informative about our justice system as well as mental health in the justice department. I hope this writer decides to write something again as I thoroughly enjoyed this book.
Thank you to netgalley as well as the author for allowing me to read this book in exchange for my honest review.
Thanks Netgalley for allowing me to read this book. Brian who was the youngest was never mentally stable. He killed his parents at the age of 22 and turned himself into the police. His father was always angry and mother could be nice at times but also had a dark side. She disliked taking care of the children with no help from her husband this book was both chilling and well written.
Interesting book. Seems to me that the family and children slipped thru the cracks way before the murder even happened. Feel sorry for the whole lot of them in some ways.
Thanks to author, publisher and NetGalley for the chance to read this book. While I got the book for free, it had no bearing on the rating I gave it.
I received an advance copy of, Couple Found Slain, by Mikita Brottman. This is a very well written book on a delicate subject. Murdering your parents, where do go from there?
This was amazing from the beginning and a true story at that sign me the neck up!
The writing was great. The author really knows how to draw you in and capture your attention.
The story was unbelievable. Like wow. Simply amazing.
Wow. This was a very interesting read of what happens when a murderer is found not guilty by reason of insanity. Very interesting read.
What happens to a murderer after they are found not not guilty because of mental illness? Brottman explores the both the aftermath and the events leading up to the slaying of 22 year old Brian Bechtold’s parents in Maryland in 1992. Bechtold turned himself in at a Florida police station where he admitted to killing his parents because the devil told him to. Committed to a secure psychiatric facility, Becthold has been far from the ideal patient/prisoner, trying to escape, being shot by the police and witnessing multiple patient homicides in his 27 years in the ward. He’s also seen some of the very worst remedies our psychiatric hospitals dole out. A fascinating portrayal of the failing mental health system in the United States
