If you like The Selection series, please read this other series by the same author. The Betrayed is the sequel and conclusion to this duology. Book one is called The Betrothed. It has drama. It has romance. It is such a sweeping tale of teen love and betrayal. Please read this series.
I loved The Selection. If I could never read any other books, it would be The Selection. I was ecstatic when I found out Kiera Cass was releasing another series. There was promise with the story line, but so much of the first first book just fell flat. I was hoping book 2 would be on the up and up, but it was more of the same. If you liked book 1, you will like book 2.
Overall, this duology has felt extremely contrived. It needed more love, more attention, more detail, and more time for the plot to progress naturally.
Thank you to NetGalley and HarperCollins for the ARC.
This was better than the first but still meh. It was cute, it had some dark moments but right when action would happen everything would just magically fall into place with less drama and bloodshed. It did have a lot of political intrigue and was fast paced.
While this isn't my favorite series of Kiera Cass, it was still an enjoyable read! I would recommend this to anyone who loves fairytales with a twist!
This was an exciting revisit with much beloved characters. Kiera Cass does a phenomenal job with storytelling, and this story is no different. I had highly anticipated this sequel to The Betrothed, and it did not disappoint at all! I strongly recommend this and all of Cass' books to anyone who hasn't read them, and those who have who want to once again be caught in the beautiful worlds she creates for her readers.
I’ve read other Kiera Cass novels, so I should have expected a giant cliffhanger. But I didn’t realize that, and started the book anyway, and then was wildly disappointed when the book ended in a spot that felt more like the end of a section instead of the end of the book. I’ll just wait for the series to end before reading any more- it makes more sense when read together instead of waiting a year between installments.
Thank you to Netgalley and the publishers for giving me a free advanced copy of this book to read and review.
Continuing the story of Hollis, the Betrayed by Kiera Cass takes readers on an exciting journey from the kingdom of Coroa and Isolte and back. Readers find that Hollis and her new family, the Eastoffs, face many struggles as they're trying to fix the world that they have found themselves in.
Sequel to The Betrothed, must read in order
Kiera Cass's newest YA series has the dresses, the monarchy, and the danger of The Selection series, but it just falls short of being as addictive.
I did not finish this sequel, and the this series does not go out of my library nearly as much as The Selection. I do think the characters and the brutality in these new books are just not as well done.
If you like Red Queen by Victoria Aveyard or Delirium by Lauren Oliver, then this is a lesser addition to the genre (young adult dystopian/ fantasy).
This is a YA romance sequel to The Betrothed. It was just okay. It is not a series I see flying off the shelves -- nothing like The Selection, also by Kiera Cass.
I give it 3 stars. It was mediocre.
Thank you to the publisher and NetGalley for an eARC in exchange for a review.
The Betrayed is an amazing sequel as we continue to follow the story of Hollis as she flees with her new family. This was the perfect sequel to the Betrothed. Kiera Casa continues to weave a story that you don’t know where it will take you next. The story of Hollis and Etan and how they move forward after so much loss and try to find a way to protect their countries.
This book was very good. The growth of Hollis from book one to book two was fantastic. She grew so much as a person. This book is about so much more than love. Its about family and personal growth and what we have to do to move on. loved.
This novel picks up where The Betrothed left off. The story was very slow moving and most of the action takes place at the end of the novel. Overall, this is a good series but not as romantic or swoon worthy as The Selection. Still, I recommend this for fans of Richelle Meade!
This book was okay. I didn’t find myself really liking it until well into end of the book. There were parts that felt way too drawn out. It was enjoyable for the quick fantasy read that it way, but I just wanted a little more from the aftermath of what happened with the two countries.
If you like fantasy with politics this may be up your alley, so give it a try.
This is the second book in a duology and it picks up where it left off, with Hollis and company reeling from the massacre that ended The Betrothed. Young adult fans of The Selection may enjoy this series but to this adult reader, it felt rushed and unsatisfying (plus the big bad was fairly apparent from Book One and not a twist at all). Hollis has a new home and a new love interest. I think Kiera Cass is about to have a resurgence in popularity, so it may be worth getting this book for your library for that reason alone.
I absolutely love Kiera’s writing. And despite the plot being somewhat predictable I just love the relationships she creates between characters and how she shows them falling in love.
This was much better than book 2 and I am glad I read it. I think it is hard to follow up her first series and readers are going to compare it to that. Still, unlike book one this felt more cohesive and easier to follow. I enjoyed it!
Kiera Cass has done it again. I fell into this book and was lost to the world. The characters make you love them and hate them all at once. You become obsessed with them the same way some people are obsessed with their favorite reality show's and Bachelor stars.
I love the cover and I could not ask for a better book.
Are you kidding me? You expect me to believe this tyrannical king just rolled over and gave up his crown with no fight, that Jameson just killed himself like nothing, AND that their lovers ran off with each other, making it the perfect story for them to end up together?? It was so unbelievable that they would fall in love in the first place because 1) he's literally her DEAD HUSBANDS COUSIN, and 2) he's an ass? Now you expect me to just be happy with this ending that is perfectly wrapped up in a bow? Absolutely not. This should have been a trilogy and ended this book with a huge battle/ civil war that ended in Etan becoming king and crappy king revealing the truth about who killed Silas, but not revealing it fully. then the next book opens with the reveal and it goes on to fighting or tricking him out of his crown and then Etan and Hollis can live happily ever after, gross.
I hate that the ending of this book ruined this for me because it was going so well.
Thanks to NetGalley and the Publisher for sharing this book. All opinions are my own.
I've been a huge fan of Kiera Cass since her first trilogy was published. She creates compelling narratives and complex characters and fills the pages with rich dialogue. The Betrayed completes a duology. Even better plot pacing and character development in this that the The Betrothed, so recommended to read this as a standalone if you haven't gotten to the first title yet!
