I love reading or listening to sci-fi stories, and this book does not disappoint, it delivers! I loved the story and I totally recommend picking this book for a fun and mysterious read.
It took me a while to get to this book, as audiobooks are still something I'm learning to get used to! I'm huge Star Wars fan, and have loved the addition of companion material that had been released for Galaxy's Edge. I think it's a smart marketing move, and allows writers to flex their skills while writing IP!. I very much like the military feel while being sci-fi! The combat was really well done, and I can tell a lot of work went into those scenes! The tinges of Galactic politics gave it the Star Wars feel! I think the book was read very nicely, which helped me to comprehend all of the sci-fi madness that comes along with Star Wars. I think that the voice behind an audiobook is what makes or breaks it, and this time, it for sure made it! Thanks to NetGalley for the early copy!
I'm weak kneed for anything remotely "space opera," so I grabbed this audiobook without knowing much more than that. Um.........
WOW. As a fan of Doctor Who, Star Trek, Firefly Scott Sigler's GFL series, Red Rising, and the Alien franchise books, this was super super fun!
Galaxy's Edge is a superbly narrated military sci fi masterpiece of action, political drama, space and weapon tech, and portraits of military figures. What struck me most about this collection are the main characters: all skilled and trained killers, each with their own weaknesses and internal conflicts--yet distinct from each other. When the Wraith and Rex weaved together finally, it was a stunning picture of scarred, cynical military figures with well written personalities.
Aside from those main characters, the side and supporting characters are awesome as well! And don't even get me started on how excellent the narration is. EXCELLENT. RC Bray has that delicious masculine, aggressive voice for the story that's easy to listen to and the skill to include something like 6 other accents and voices for the other characters without skipping a beat.
The action never stops but is easy enough to follow. There are a ton of characters but I was never so lost that I had to rewind or anything.
I didn't realize that Galaxy's Edge is a whole collection of stories, more than just this audiobook. It's a whole world of stories! I'm stoked to have found this and read more about what happened in the timeline before this book and after. Though, for anyone reading this knowing as little as I did, this read just fine on its own.
It's also worth mentioning that this was surprisingly not overly violent. Like, yes, it's a military and rebellion story, but it's not gory or "war porn." There are a few women in the book but no romance or anything smutty (though I wouldn't mind finding some romantic fanfic set in this world with these characters). It's a weird thing to say, but this is rather wholesome military entertainment that I can recommend without reservation.
Thank you NetGalley and Podium Audio for a copy of this audiobook in exchange for my honest review!
Wonderfully narrated!! I love a good sci-fi novel and this one didn't disappoint. Highly recommended for sci-fi Addict like me!
This is well written (and well read by the narrator), but evidently I don't like military sci-fi. So it's my fault that I didn't like it. I'm confident that fans of this genre will enjoy it.
Thanks very much for the review copy!
Fight fight fight. The whole book is fight fight fight, It is set in the future and far far away, where the "republic" is fighting some aliens, Bad treacherous aliens that trick the bad higher ranked officials and so the lives are lost and bad guys almost win. They are saved in the nick of time, of course. Bad higher ups get their medals, but the good soldiers do not, so they drown their sorrow in the bottle. It is fast paced and it wasn't bad at all, even though I don't usually like this kind of stuff.
The narrator is quite OK, too, and the book is read well and easy to listen
Legionnaire is a high octane, “man’s man”, space military adventure. It’s very rich in detail about battle plans, firepower, and military tactics. These forces bravely put themselves in harm’s way but it was hard to support them at times, especially when they took over the planet and subjugated the indigenous people (using derogatory terms) to exploit their natural resources. KTF: Kill Them First
I’m not sure if this book will hold up well over time or if it will always fit in seamlessly with the target audience.
I was mainly drawn to this audiobook because of the narrator, RC Bray. He was definitely the perfect choice for the book. I enjoy everything he narrates and, because of him, I rated this book higher than I would have had I read it.
