After disobeying orders once more during a battle, Nova is temporarily grounded by the council. Directed to expand her team to include some fellow humans, Nova tries befriending some of her classmates. Meanwhile, Zephyr explores forbidden magics that, while proving extremely helpful, exposes her and Nova to greater risks. But as both Nova and Zephyr grow in their abilities, new questions arise about the history of the land they've come to call home, about the council who rules it, and worst of all, about the trustworthiness of the people they've grown to trust.

As outsiders, Nova and Zephyr question the council's rules and Ragond's history, which make less sense as they uncover further secrets. Hardest of all, Nova finally reaches out and builds a tenuous relationship with her grandfather, but has no idea how involved he was in the council's conspiracy. What if he's been lying to her all this time?

I like that Nova finally reached out (even if it wasn't of her own accord) to some of her fellow classmates. Making friends isn't easy for her, and I identify with that somewhat. Of course, she still retains her friendship/sistership with Zephyr and her bonds with the dragons. There were lots of good teamwork/friendship moments throughout.

The plot is more complex than I expected it to be. There are lots of secrets, betrayals, surprising allies... Lots of good stuff, plus quick paced action and magical scenes. And, thankfully, still no romance. There's a potential for a relationship in there, but I can't tell yet if it'll be explored later. So far, the plot focuses on the war, the secrets, and the dragon school. Romances are entirely unnecessary.

This is a great series for fantasy readers, and especially for dragon fans. Hake is a great partner, and has a nice close relationship with Nova. And there's grumpy old Korgad, with a personality and secrets of his own to boot.

Looking out for the next book in this series...
