I was granted complimentary eARC access to Big and Little by Yang Hang through the publisher via NetGalley in exchange for an honest review.
Big and Little is the story of two friends, Big Raccon and Little Raccoon, and how they learn to be patient with each other while out on a picnic walk in the woods. It's a cute, quick read that will surely charm kids everywhere! The illustrations are beautiful, too. I could look at these pages all day.
My one critique is the formatting choice to always put the names "Big Raccon" and "Little Raccoon" in curly, fancy fonts that differ from the rest of the text. Excessively fancy fonts can be very difficult for language learners (which the target audience of 4-9-year-olds absolutely are) and nearly impossible for individuals with certain learning disabilities such as dyslexia. Mixed fonts can also be extremely difficult on dyslexia. I hope those in a position to change this will see this comment and consider doing something about it before publication, but just in case if you're a parent of a dyslexic reader I would encourage you to check for this in the book preview and decide whether or not it would be a problem for your young reader.
Lovely illustrations and a story that will feel familiar to children with older siblings or friends. A disagreement sends the friends apart, but time to cool off and a compromise make life even sweeter.
This is such a cute book for a classroom readaloud or a bedtime story. Big and Little Raccoon are headed to a picnic. On the way, the stop and see a snail. What happens next tells the tale of kindness and making choices.
Big and Little is a book about two raccoons who are friends. The illustrations are gorgeous and the overall morals are the importance of communicating with your friends to determine if they need help and how much more satisfying things may be when we achieve them ourselves without help. I found the lessons a little confusing and unclear, so a discussion after reading might help the child understand better.
Thank you Clavis Publishing and NetGalley for providing this ARC.
A lovely short story on friendship with plenty of learning opportunities, including vocabulary and comparative adjectives. The illustrations are delightful!
Absolutely gorgeous art. I think this was supposed to be about learning how to do things for yourself, but it was also about fighting? The fact the two friends abandoned each other was a bit rough, but I'm glad they are learning how to be friends but still independent to help but not do everything.
This book had the most beautiful illustrations. I glanced at the cover before reading, but once I started I was delightfully surprised. The illustrations are beautifully colored, and look like oil paintings. I also enjoyed the story, and could imagine myself reading it to my younger relatives. It felt like a good length and a good perspective on friendship, not just what it means to be a good friend, but how to support a friend so that you are both at their back but understanding that they are capable of doing things for themselves. I've never read a children's book with this theme, which was exciting. I also thought the raccoons were very cute. Sue me.
A gorgeous story that follows two racoons—'Big Racoon' and 'Little Racoon' as they navigate in the wild and come across a disagreement.
I appreciate how this book explores disagreements between friends. However, I just wished this book provided more clarity for the audience and illustrated how the two racoons would communicate and address their anger at each other.
Despite that, this was an enjoyable read and I'm sure my niece would love this book. Furthermore, the illustration is gorgeous—with vibrant colours and an engaging art style. Also, the fonts helped distinguish the two characters upon reading.
Big and Little is a heart-warming story centring on friendship, patience, and understanding.
Thank you to NetGalley and the publishers for a copy of this book in exchange for an honest review.
Oh goodness, these raccoons are TOO PRECIOUS. What a lovely little book for kids about patience and friendship.
Loved this gorgeous thoughtful book. The illustrations are fabulous ,really gorgeous and The thought that goes into the dialogue gives opportunity for many talking points with your young child or grandchild.
I would love to read this book to my five-year-old granddaughter and it’s physical form 😃.
At first I wasn’t sure about the use of cursive for the names big raccoon and little raccoon, but seeing the recommended ages is 4 to 9 it makes sense and it helps the names stand out in the text.
This is a cute book with a great lesson about friendship. Not sure if the lesson will be super clear to the younger children though. Still a good overall book.
What a heartwarming and well-illustrated story!
I loved that the two friends are Big and Little; also that this book shows that friends can have a fight & walk different paths for a while. And that ending with the snail and the stone (mountain). Little Raccoon learning that sometimes, it is OK to walk side by side and not to be carried by Big Raccoon. #progress #learning
Such a simple, yet lovely children's story. The illustrations were so tender and fit well to the plot.
Hmmm... This tale of two raccoons, one large and one small, off on their jollies together, has some kind of moral about there being more than one way to give help to someone. And that's about it – I doubt the lesson will be perfectly clear to all the young readers attracted by the pleasant artwork and the portrayal of the critters' friendship. Little Raccoon wants to watch a snail cross its own Rubicon, achieve its own sisyphean task, but Big Raccoon just hasn't the patience. It's only when he can help the snail and leave it to its own devices at the same time that order is restored with the world.
