The plot is very thin and lacking in educational facts during the story. There could have been some facts sprinkled into the story to make it more nonfiction. The back matter is dense with facts about each character. The illustrations are full of life and push the story
The premise here is fairly simple: the narrator tells us that turtles live on every continent but Antarctica. A contrary turtle sets out to prove that wrong. As it makes the journey south, it meets with a number of other animals which also are not found in Antarctica. Each animal joins in the journey out of curiosity, desire for company, a sense of adventure. The premise and it's eventual resolution is all a bit silly but should hit the right level of humor for elementary age kids. Each page also includes a couple of facts about an animal, giving it a small degree of educational value.
Read this story to my nephew, he loved it! This book may have to be under the Christmas tree for him this year.
This fun facts book rolled into a story with a turtle as narrator is fun AND interesting!
I recommend this book for anyone who loves to learn about life away from home. Antarctica, climate change, and children's nonfiction -- get this book for your middle school classrooms, too!
This fun, often informational book follows a quirky turtle as he goes on an adventure to Antarctica when he learns that turtles live on every continent except there. As he travels, he is joined by a number of equally interesting animals, all of whom have just discovered they have no representation on the southern-most continent and are going to do something about it.
The illustrations are great, the facts are fabulous, and the story makes it a joy to read with kids while learning information about Antarctica and some of the animals who don't (and some who do!) live in the frozen south.
My thanks to Sourcebooks and NetGalley for the ARC in exchange for an honest review.
Precious illustrations & strong storyline that will engage kids with a variety of interests. My own zoophile (is that even a real world) is always drawn to anthropomorphized creatures & this book provided no exception to that!
I loved this book, what a sweet way to teach kiddos about animals while still keeping them entertained!
This was a really fun picture book. The kids super enjoyed imagining all of these no -Antarctican animals taking a trip to the tundra!
This is a children's book with Non-Fiction Animal Facts that I read to my twin boys. I loved this cute story, and it has some great animal facts that was written in away that young children can understand them. I also love that this book made my boys laugh so hard, and I found it so cute and fun to read. This book is great for K to 1st grade. The pictures are so cute, and the pictures pull children into the story. I was kindly provided an e-copy of this book by the publisher (Sourcebooks Explore) or author (Todd Sturgell) via NetGalley, so I can give honest review about how I feel about this book. I want to send a big Thank you to them for that.
This was my first book to read by this author and I can't wait to read more! The characters are amazing and the story flows so well. Really cannot recommend this one enough!!
This was a very fun and interesting picture book. I will definitely be purchasing for my elementary library. I love the illustrations as well.
What fun!! The narrator is a character in this story trying to tell the reader about animals that can be found on every continent but Antarctica. Well the animals are having nothing to do with that!. They are going to Antarctica. Even if they have to defy the narrator to do so. The story works. It just does. The illustrations help play up the comedy and kids of all ages will enjoy it. Plus the Narrator does get to throw his facts in at the end.
I really enjoyed this one, and I'm delighted to see that my library has purchased it. I would LOVE for David Attenborough to do a story time of this. There's lots of extra information in the back, and the book manages to strike a good tone for addressing climate change while still keeping the message relatively hopeful. My only quibble is that it's stated that owls don't poop. Trust me, as a former animal keeper, they do. Yes, the undigested bones and fur are regurgitated as pellets, but there's still feces to clean up as well. Still highly recommended, though.
Thank you to Sourcebooks and NetGalley for the ARC!
Kids will love this silly picture book with a different approach to nonfiction. With information about different animals and Antarctica, the connection lies in all the animals that do not live in Antarctica, and one animal that does. Great for fans of the I’m Trying to Love series.
This is a great book to use with an animals and geography unit. I love that the stubbornness and then learning the narrator was correct.
I was attracted to this book by the quirky cover, but found the inside even more amazing. When the cover turtle is told by the narrator that turtles live on every continent but Antarctica, he sets off to prove him wrong, Along the way, other animals join him on his journey. The humor had me literally laughing out loud in many places, and I especially loved the dung beetle. At the end of the story, there is great information on the animals included in the book. I'm not sure how to catalog it, but I can definitely say it was a winner in my opinion.
A cute concept, this book features a narrator talking about how various things are found on all continents except Antarctica, only for those creatures to start for the continent in question. Unfortunately, it seems to sit in an awkward in-between spot where there aren't quite enough facts for this to be a science book, but the story isn't really enthralling enough to hold up as a story either. Good for Antarctic-obsessed kids.
Except Antarctica offers the perfect balance of humor and information. A determined turtle sets out to prove that turtles can live anywhere, even Antarctica. He is joined by several other animals that don't live in Antarctica either. Not only is the reader introduced to animals who cannot live in the Antarctic climate, the reader gets a lesson in determination. Perfect for all readers both young and young at heart.
This book was the whole package! I didn't know what to expect, but by the time I was done, I had dozens of ideas for the types of customers who will love this book. This book used a silly version of an animal documentary style to narrate a hilarious adventure, which is sure to pique the interest of young readers. The book then offers an abundance of information/facts at the end of the book to feed that curiousity, tied together with connections to climate change and where kids can start to do their part to make the world better. This is a really fun way to get kids informed, and I can't wait to start talking to customers about it!
This is a fun book to learn about where different animals come from and why they are suited to different habitiats. The illustrations are comical and I think young children would find this book a lot of fun.
