Body Over Troubled Waters by Denise Swason is the latest in the Scumble River mystery series starring school psychologist Skye Denison-Boyd and her Chief of Police hubby Wally Boyd. A not so awesome individual is murdered and while he may not be missed Skye and Wally have solve the mystery before the Valentine’s dance while juggling caring for their twins, interactions with their families and friends, and Skye, her every day job. All the normal cast of characters show up to include the Dooziers, who are always good for a chuckle. Swanson has created another fun and fast cozy murder mystery.

I always enjoy visiting Scumble River and this trip was just as enjoyable as always. I love watching Skye and Wally as they adjust to life as parents.

The characters and relationships remain true and we are beginning to meet more of the residents of the area. We even had a short visit with the Doozier family. The mystery had twists and turns that kept me guessing until the end and reading very late into the night.

This book does start off with Skye being trapped with the superintendent during a lockdown - just after he’s announced he’s hired his own son in a new role at the school. The lockdown turns out to be because a student dressed as a cupid, complete with toy bow and arrow, which the school secretary deemed a weapon. Other than the parents working out the deals of not suing the school, it’s not much to do with the rest of the story.
Dr. Wraige’s had recent burglaries and no one else in his household has been affected - his wife, adult son, or his wife’s friend who is staying with them while going through a messy divorce. When he’s found murdered after calling to complain about someone trying to enter his house, Wally finds a number of alibis and no shortage of motives. Someone like Wraige’s character really shows how small-towns keep enabling abusers.
The mystery in this book zipped along, with Skye and Wally finding out more along the way. The story is balanced nicely between their personal lives and investigating the mystery, with both starting to balance their workloads a bit more. It’s an enjoyable instalment to the series that small-town mystery lovers will savour.

Body Over Troubled Waters is a solid mystery. Since this book is in the middle of a series, the characters are well-established and inner-connected.

Skye and her husband, Wally, have their hands full with work and newborn twins. Luckily they have each other to help solve a murder.

Unlike many cozies, the story is told from split POV - usually Skye, who is an established police consultant (on top of her duties as a school psychologist), but also some chapters are from her Chief of Police husband Wally. This stands out in a genre which is predominantly centered around a single amateur sleuth. It also deals with subjects many cozies won't, particularly with regards to sexual situations.

If you prefer more serious mysteries set in a slice-of-life setting (rather than a softer cozy or a heavily humorous romp), Body Over Troubled Waters would be a good choice.

Thanks Netgalley for allowing me to read this book. Skye just came back to work after having twins. When a man is found murdered at his home, Skype will try to help her husband solve the case. This book kept me guessing until the end.

We return to Scumble River and to Skye and her family. Skye has newly returned from maternity leave and the first day back involves a school lockdown. She is stuck with the superintendent and notices that he is very pale and appears to not be feeling well. He is later found murdered. and Skye and her chief of police husband Wally start looking into the murder. Skye pokes around asking questions at the schools and helping Wally with interviews. I absolutely love this series. I love that balance that Wally and Skye have between their work and home life. It is always great to have the Dooziers in the story no matter how small. Scumble River wouldn't be the same without them. The mystery was good. I went back and forth on who I thought the killer was. I received this book from Poisioned Pen Press and netgalley in exchange for an honest review.

this was a good solid entry in the Scumble River series. Skye is back at work and seems to be dealing well with being a new mother. (not sure how real that is). The mystery involving the death of the superintendent sometimes slows down and gets a bit off track. However, it is a good cozy mystery for a rainy afternoon.

Skye’s maternity leave is over and it’s time for her to head back to work. What should have been a nice easy shift back turns into a nightmare when the school is locked down for a shooter. To make it worse, Skye ends up hiding with school superintendent, not her first choice, or anyone else for that matter. But when the man is found dead in his home, Skye and Wally both seem to think there’s more to it than mere coincidence…and they’re on the case!

Denise Swanson has quite a few cozy series that I enjoy and this one is certainly one of my favorites!

I always love a visit to Scumble River and have been reading Denise Swanson's numerous mystery series for years. I consider her of the OG of cozy writers and am always excited to read another of hers. This one was no exception! In this entry, Skye and Wally have moved into their new house, settled in with the twins, and Skye is back to work at school. The murder of the superintendent of the school district has more action in and out of school instead of the town as a whole. I missed some of the more eccentric and wild characters like Bunny, but we did get a dose of the Doozier clan, which is always a hoot! The mystery was solid and enjoyed the reveal of the murderer. All in all, this is another great entry in the Scumble River series!

It's an educator's worse nightmare. A shooter in the school forcing a lockdown. Skye is holed up with the school superintendent who is rather strange. A short while later after the all clear sounds Dr. Wraige, the superintendent, is found dead in his home. With characters that readers have come to love, a well written plot takes the reader on the hunt for the killer. Thanks #netgalley and #PoisonedPenPress for the eARC in exchange for an honest review.

This is a small town where everyone knows everyone and works for them.
After an early morning meeting at school the lock down protocol is engaged.
Wally who is in charge of this small police department and the husband to Sky, who is inside, rushes over.
His first on the scene officer is waiting and hasn't been able to contact anyone.
From there he and other officers begin a sweep.
The answers will come.
As the story continues we learn of ongoing burglaries of a school official and other seemingly incriminating evidence of several suspects.
Working for friends is hard, working for family is harder..
This story unfolds quickly and keeps you interested with the many twists.

Another visit with characters that feel like family. The town characters make a funny background and subplot.

Body over Troubled Water
By Denise Swanson

Skye Denison-Boyd first day back as a School Psychologist from maternity leave, is unforgettable. The worst thing that could happen is a school shooter emergency lockdown, and she is trapped with superintendent Dr. Wraige, while her godfather is being arrested by the state police.

Dr. Wraige body is discovered dead in his home a short time later Skye doesn’t think that’s a coincidence. So she joins her husband Police Chief Wally in the investigation that becomes very complicated. There’s are so many suspects and for different reasons. With the killer still on the loose Skye is caught with some heart decisions.
But she won’t give up until everyone in Scumble river is safe.

I loved this entire story. Wally and Skye are a great team and the plots are well done. There are many moving parts here. Jealousy, revenge, murder, and sorrow. I love that we see Justin and Franny again! Denise Swanson gives the reader all her wonderful characters, May, Jed, Vince, Loretta, Carson, and they never crowd one another. I look forward to this continuing series.

Kindle Copy for Review from NetGalley and Poisoned Pen Press.

I received a free, advance copy of this book and this is my unbiased and voluntary review.

Skye and Wally will have to deal with Stupid Cupid antics. Skye soon regrets returning from maternity leave when she is ends up in lockdown during a school emergency. She ends up getting stuck with the creepy district superintendant that later ends up dead at his home.

Once again Skye and her police chief officer husband will work together to keep the citizens of the town safe again and clear her godfather’s name.

Delightful fun read that will keep you guessing.

Scumble River is always entertaining this time even more so. Skye and Wally are cute and fun, they make the stories even more enjoyable. The series are relatable on the human level (not in the murdery level unless you run into murder frequently…)
