This was a fun read, centered on Jamie and Kit, 2 unlikely friends who travel to and from work together via ferry. One day, Kit doesn't show up and Jamie finds himself involved in a police investigation as more and more things are uncovered about their relationship.

The book started off a bit slow for me (maybe first 25% or so) but picked up quickly after, and the 2nd half flew by. None of the characters were that likeable, but I don't mind that, and found myself rooting for Jamie anyway. There were a lot of twists and turns here, most which I did not see coming, and a couple where I thought the story was going one way and went a completely different direction. The story is a little bit dark, but that's my jam!

I'd recommend this book to those who like psychological suspense. It's a different kind of book and I think it will be one I remember after I read the next 50 books. Thanks to Netgalley for providing me a copy of this book in exchange for an honest review.

Another excellent offering from Louise Candlish. A recommended purchase for collections where thrillers are popular.

This twisty dark thriller builds suspense beautifully as the narrative unfolds. Not only is the narrator unreliable, almost all the main characters are, and layer upon layer of obsession and betrayal is uncovered as the mystery slowly reveals itself. Patricia Highsmith's Mr. Ripley is referenced more than once, and indeed the writing is reminiscent of Highsmith's in its compelling dark wit and bleak outlook. The setting is skillfully brought to life: the passengers are aboard a commuter catamaran in London, not a train or tube, due to the narrator's claustrophobia which plays nicely into the story. The ending packs an ironic punch in the best tradition of the old Hitchcock movies. Highly recommended for psychological thriller lovers.

Goodness me! At first the story is unhurried with no sense of urgency, but it once it got going, boy, did it go the distance! The tension practically had me gnawing my tongue. My favourite aspects are the kinks, bends and u-turns. Secrets, greed and deceit in spades, the author messes with the reader's mind brilliantly.

Jamie and Kit commute on the ferry each day and get to know each other. Jamie is middle aged and Kit is about twenty years younger but they strike up a friendship. The two men and their girlfriends become friends as well so the four meet for drinks and hang out. But no relationship is perfect and Jamie and Kit have an argument on the ferry, clearly witnessed. When Kit is soon discovered missing, Jamie is suspect #1. Enter the twists. Kit's girlfriend, Melia, and Clare, Jamie's girlfriend, become involved as do friends Gretchen and Steve as they are concerned with his whereabouts. The police ask probing questions which reveal even more layers of deceit.

Though it took awhile, the premise and story yanked me in like crazy. I didn't like the characters with questionable scruples and choices but enjoyed the clever psychological onslaught.

My sincere thank you to Simon & Schuster Canada and NetGalley for the opportunity of reading the e-ARC of this roller coaster of a book!

Thank you to NetGalley and Atria Books for an ARC of this title in exchange for my honest review. I've read books by Louise Candlish in the past, and while this was not my favorite, I did enjoy it. The characters were so unlikeable, I truly didn't care one bit what happened to any of them. That was probably my biggest problem with it. The plot, the pacing is well done, and I enjoyed that a great deal.

If I had to sum up Louise Candlish’s writing, it would be this sentence, “My face was trapped in that smile.” I can perfectly and vividly picture that moment. The tilt of a head, a frozen smile, the cogs of confusion stuttering in the mind. Her writing is brilliant and sharp to the touch. I don’t have to imagine a single thing, because it is all so precisely written out for me. It’s why she is one of my favorites.

I truly thought I loved Candlish’s thrillers before The Other Passenger, and honestly I say this about all of her books, but THIS ONE. This one blew me away. The twists knocked the wind out of me, my jaw literally dropped. I stayed up way past my bedtime, pulse pounding, just to finish this book.

And wow. I did not see the ending coming.

Read this as soon as you can. It’s so good!

I am so appreciative to netgalley for allowing me to read and review this book.

Unfortunately, this one really missed the mark for me. I like my thrillers to be fast paced and this one just felt really slow to me.
We are following two couples who live very different lifestyles but have found their way as friends, nonetheless. One day, one of the members of this friend group goes missing. As the search goes on for the missing person, the friendships through our characters are broken down and exposed in an effort to rescue our missing person.

I found myself not drawn to any of these characters. The missing person specifically was so hard to like that I wasn’t even mad that he went missing. I caught myself constantly skimming and skipping descriptive paragraphs to get to the good stuff. This one missed the mark for me but I have heard great things about this author so I am ready to pick up another of hers to check out!

I have just finished reading The Other Passenger by Louise Candlish

This is an author that I have heard good things about and so was very interested in reading some of her works.

I liked her writing style, and this book was a great one. A real psychological thriller with many twists and turns.

I did not really like any of the characters, but this did not take away from the book for me, it just compelled me to read on. I found it enjoyable right away, and the twists, and turns surprized to me, right to the end.

I would recommend this book for readers who want a new thriller. I will read more of Louise Candlish books in the future!

Thank you to NetGalley, Author Louise Candlish and Atria Books for my advanced copy to read and review.

This was my first book by this author but it will not be my last. A twisty thriller that I read in just two sittings. I really enjoyed the style of the writing.

Jamie and Clare befriend the much younger Kit and Melia. They begin to spend time together as a group and soon tensions mount. Clare has inherited wealth that the rest of the group does not have. Also, Melia is very attractive which is tempting for Clare ‘s boyfriend, Jamie.

Kit and Jamie begin to commute to London together on a ferry where they meet other passengers and befriend them. One day, Kit is not there and then secrets emerge. I just want to say thank you very much for the epilogue. You think you know it all, but that was perfect closure.

Thank you to Net Galley and the publisher for a copy of this book which I enjoyed very much. I will definitely be reading more of this author’s books.

New friends Jamie and Kit take the ferry together to work. One evening after some holiday partying, they have an argument, and the next day Kit goes missing. Lots of twists and turns in this one, although there’s a slow buildup, which either increases the suspense for you, or makes you impatient for the payoff, but stick with it - it’s worth the wait. Dislikable characters, which actually adds to the story, and the way the author unfolds the story add up to an enjoyable read. I received an ARC of this book from the publisher through NetGalley in exchange for an honest review.

Well, wasn't THAT just delicious??

Left is right and up is down in this delightful thrill ride by Louise Candlish. Just when you think you know where the story is going, it takes a sharp left turn and then a steep drop. Forty-something year old Jamie is recovering from an embarrassing panic attack on the Tube, working in a coffee shop for minimum wage, and living with his younger girlfriend Clare (who wants him to get his act together and go back to a career with a decent earning potential). Early in the year they make some new friends in neighbors Melia, who also works with Clare, and Melia's boyfriend Kit, and the two men hatch a plan to ride the river shuttle together to work beginning in January. Jamie and Kit develop a camaraderie with each other over the course of the year, and they form a sort of group with a couple of other regular passengers. And then right before Christmas, Kit disappears.

Since he was the last person to see Kit, Jamie falls under suspicion and finds himself embroiled in multiple police interviews during which he tries to prove his innocence. Melia is heartbroken and in shock, Clare is indignant that Jamie is under suspicion, and Jamie is convinced that Kit was involved with drugs, having personally witnessed Kit's drug use.

But. That's a huge word in this book, because things are not as they seem. In fact, almost nothing is what it seems. I don't do spoilers so it's safe to read the rest of the review, but boy do I WANT to add some spoilers because you are not going to believe your eyes. The whole second half of the book I found myself saying, "Wait. What?" Ms. Candlish does a masterful job of writing the scenes and dialogue in such a way that when a lie is peeled off and another layer of truth is revealed, it makes perfect sense. I also loved that the story didn't end with the climax of the story - instead, we get to read on to find out what happens to the characters afterward, and we get to enjoy a bit of justice seasoned with irony right at the very end.

A great thriller with a great story and plenty of twists. It was definitely a page turner that kept me reading through the night.

The Other Passenger by Louise Candlish is a twisty ride (pun intended) that will have you hooked until the very end. Ms Candlish skillfully teases out just enough of the ongoing suspense to keep the reader invested in this slow burn of a thriller, and the end result is deeply satisfying.

Jamie shares his daily commute with his charismatic neighbour Kit. When Kit fails to materialize one day, Jamie finds himself met by police at the end of his journey, becoming the prime suspect in his friend's disappearance. Just whom among their fellow passengers is pointing the accusatory finger?

As mentioned previously, this one is a bit of a slow burn as Ms Candlish is meticulous in chronicling the details of past and present, and the book is richer for it.

Many thanks to NetGalley and Atria Books for an ARC.

I was intrigued at the beginning, but then got a little bored. I didn't care for any of the characters, but wanted to know what happened, so I continued reading, and two the ending is a wow.

I read that this book was a “sucker punch of a twist.” That is the most apt description that I can think of, Just when you get your sea legs, (pardon the literary pun,) this story pulls it all out from under you and flips the script! I honestly underestimated Melia, despite the many clues that I understood in hindsight. I definitely overestimated Jamie. This story had me second-guessing everything I know and going back to see where and what I missed the first time. Kudos to the author, it was a helluva ride! Thanks to the publisher and NetGalley for my free arc in exchange for my honest opinion. It was oh-so-twisty!

This book started out so well I was immediately drawn into the story. As the book went on, I really started disliking all of the characters, which is huge for me because I really need at least one character I can root for. I also had a clue about what was going on pretty early on. But the writing was good as was the story (even though a lot of it was predicable). The very end was kind of a let-down. Three and a half stars rounded up to four.

This felt entirely forgettable but also similar to other books in this genre that I've read before. I didn't particularly like any of the characters. It also dragged on a lot in the middle, to the point where I skimmed a few chapters and didn't miss anything.

Kindly received an ARC from NetGalley in exchange for an honest review.

The writing in this book is great. I wasn't a huge fan of the subject matter, but I think that was partly just my mood. The plot is interesting and has some good twists. I wasn't super into the book for probably the first half but it got more engaging and I enjoyed the second half. Overall a pretty solid read.
