While I have absolutely loved Louise Candlish's previous books, there was something different about this book. I found it very hard to get into the story line and identify with the (many) characters. Looking forward to reading more of her books in the future but this one didn't capture me. Thank you to NetGalley and the publisher for the opportunity to read an advanced copy.

The Other Passenger by Louise Candlish A cast of unlikable characters, Jamie, Clare, Kit and Melia and a slow and confusing start made if difficult to get invested in finishing the book. While I have enjoyed Ms Candlish's previous books, this one was just not to my interest.
Thank you to the publisher, author, and NetGalley for the opportunity to preview the book.

Another great psychological thriller! It took awhile to get into the story but was well worth the wait

The Passenger, Louise Candlish, is a dark thriller filled with twists and turns. Just when you think you have it figured out, it changes.course..
Jamie.and Kit become friends after being introduced by Jamie's partner, Clare. The pair's friendship grows as they travel.to work on the riverboat., but when Kit is reported missing, Jamie is quickly named a suspect in his disappearance.
The story begs the questions of how far will a man go for the love of.a woman.and to what degree will a woman use her guile to get what she thinks she deserves. And, lastly, who is the other passenger?

Thank you to Netgalley, St. Martin's Press, and the author for an ARC in exchange for an honest review of the book.
This is my second book by Candlish (I read Our House in 2018), and I've enjoyed them both. One of the things I liked about this was that Candlish uses a first-person male narrator (Jamie) for this domestic thriller. Usually we are in the heads of the women in such narratives but it was a nice change of pace to be in the man's head. When we start this book, we are told a man, Kit, has gone missing and Jamie fears that he--as last to have seen his friend Kit alive--is going to be blamed for this disappearance or even murder. We slowly learn about Jamie's back story, such as his agoraphobia that has forced him out of his career in his late 40s and into a job killing time as a barista. He also is a "kept" man--his long-time girlfriend has the job, the money, and the amazing home. Everything about this novel takes the too-common tropes associated with women and turns them on their ears. This twisty tale throws out a number of red herrings and, even if you have an idea of what might be happening, the ride is still fun and you want to keep going to see just how it will all work out.
I recommend this for someone who likes domestic thrillers and wants to get their hands on a good page-turner. I've definitely become a fan of Candlish's work and will continue to seek out some of her older titles.

How have I never read Louise Candlish before? I bow down to this tour de force! More of a character study than a thriller, but an adept one at that! So much attention to detail, careful plotting, resonant prose, vivid imagery...I'm ready for a return trip through the pages of this one!
Thank you NetGalley and Louise Candlish for advance access to this title!

I don't know what it is but I am completely in love with British authors. They completely immerse you into the stories from the very beginning and this novel is no different. Great characters, wonderful story. Gotta love a good psychological thriller (my fave). Thanks to NetGalley for providing me a copy to read and review.

Clare and Jamie have been living together for 10 years. They live comfortably thanks to Clare's inheritance and income, and she would prefer Jamie had more ambition. Jamie meets Kit on the ferry to work. They hit if off. Clare and Jamie begin seeing Kit and his girlfriend, Melia, frequently for dinners and drinks. All goes well until Kit disappears. When the police focus their investigation on Jamie, his world turns upside down. The mystery is enjoyable and has some great twists. Unfortunately, the first half of the book is very slow as the author builds the characters and motives which she does well.

This story was definitely a page turner. The character that tells the story is constantly “in his brain” analyzing what he is saying. His story rambles a bit but finally everything starts to come together, but not in the way I thought it would. It makes you think about what people do in the name of love.

This was a good read which was a bit slow in parts but the twists and turns in the second half of the book more than made up for that. I kept thinking I had it figured out bam.... Dead wrong!
There were so many twists to this story, and the ending was great! I liked the way that this was written, with a single unreliable narrator, and liked how it went from present day to various dates in the past year.

I started out not liking this very much.
You know those books where you hate everyone? Yep…this is one of those! However, despite my character-hate, I found myself really wondering where the book was going…so I read on.
Well, it certainly went interesting places!
This book does a lot of very unexpected things. I appreciated that the author kept me guessing almost the whole time – really there was only one mini-reveal that I’d already figured out – and definitely kept me reading! I mean, I did keep reading with a sneer on my face (Outlaw Angry Face!!!) because I really hated these people, but I still enjoyed a very suspenseful read!

This was a quick read with a compelling plot. The first half did get a bit slow at times, but I read the whole book in about 24 hours. The narrator’s voice is authentic and, although he makes some really stupid decisions, he isn’t altogether irredeemable. This unreliable narrator makes the story worth reading.

I feel like I have been waiting forever for this book. I guess it was supposed to be released under a different title at some point? Anyway, it's finally here and it didn't let me down. I'm not usually a fan of twisty twists but this one was perfect, not over the top or predictable or unbelievable like many are these days. LOVED!!

Wow! This is my first waltz with this author and I don’t want the music stop! As soon as my dance ends, I have to hurry up to buy her previous works!
This book directly addressed the insatiably voracious reader mind of mine! It’s full of surprises, too many well planned, creative, never see it coming twists, well crafted characters and impeccable story building!
It spins your mind, burns your extra grey cells, forced you think harder, agitates you , disturbs you and at the end puts a satisfying smile on your face because of the well developed wrap up of the story and fair conclusion.
Narrator of the story is Jamie Buckby but as he mentions a few pages later at his interrogation with police, everybody calls him Jamie. Let’s keep calling him as he wished even though he’s not one of the reliable narrators and he’s keen on manipulating us about the events so you have to read careful his words not to be fooled by him.
He had a great job at marketing but he suffered from a personal crisis and now he spends his time making coffees, smashing avocados, putting plastered smile on his face ( he reminded of Promising Young Woman’s Cassandra, thankfully in the nighttime, he doesn’t act like drunk and deceive the abuser men at the bars) His partner Clare’s real estate business goes well so he doesn’t need any pressure financially to find better job.
He takes the commuter riverboat at every morning to go his job accompanied by Kit, his new and younger friend ( he’s millennial) but on January 23rd Kit doesn’t show up at 7:30 a.m service! Maybe he was too hangover, he may have had a long night! Who knows? Not us, but Jamie may have some ideas!
The police officers may think just like me: yeah those two guys playing good and bad cop approach him at the end of his trip. Detective Parry and Merchison are searching for Christopher Roper’s ( a.k.a. Kit) disappearance and Jamie might be the last person he see him.
But one of the commuters already talked to the police and told them Kit and Jamie had a big fight. Could Jamie do something to Kit? Well, from his narration style we already start to doubt he has secrets! Let’s flip the pages and learn more about the characters and their back stories!
The book moves between 2019’s Christmas and New Year period . It also moves back to the beginning of the January when Kit and his wife have a dinner party with Jamie and Clare.
As I mentioned before Clare is successful business woman, also coming from privileged, wealthy family but she isn’t financially dominant or pretentious. She never puts pressure on her husband’s shoulders to find better job instead of wasting his time playing barista.
Melia is Kit’s young and beautiful, self absorbed wife who is also failed actress just like her husband, starts working at the same company with Clare ( nope, she doesn’t work under her, she’s at another division) and Kit works at insurance company. Both couple envies each other. Kit and Melia want their stability, big and fancy house, comforts of their lifestyle as Clare and Jamie yearn for their youth and their hopeful attitudes.
You still keep asking what the hell happened to Kit! Is Jamie responsible? Nope, you need to go blind and search your answers by focusing each clue on those pages! Trust me! It’s worth your attention! This is stunning dark noir!
I’m giving my five WTH I just read, mind games, dysfunctional relationships, whirlwind , riveting page turner stars! I cannot wait to read more works of the author!
Special thanks to Netgalley and Atria Books for sharing this digital reviewer copy with me in exchange my honest opinions.

Taking the water boat to work every day Jamie has become friends with a group of people of fellow travelers over the last year. Now one of them, Kit, is missing and his new wife Melia thinks Jamie has something to do with it. In fact all signs seem to point to Jamie.
