A missing girl. Childhood friends. Secret societies.
Charity Halliwell returns to England after five years living with her parents at a tea plantation in Ceylon. She carries a secret which has permanently altered her life. Though her long-time friends welcome her into their home, she gets the feeling she may not be as wanted as they assured her she would be. Then her friend goes missing.
She came to Loxby Manor because the heir, Piers Cavanagh, was said to never be at home. The strong friendship they shared in their youth is still one of her cherished memories, and her girlish fancy of him has never quite faded. When he unexpectedly turns up soon after her arrival, she must balance her memories with the distance and circumstances which have grown between them.
Who is behind the strange happenings and disappearances around Loxby Manor? Charity must unravel the mystery and find the culprit—or risk becoming a victim herself.
Abigail Wilson writes such compelling Regency-era Gothic mysteries! I've really enjoyed the ones I've read, and hope to read her backlist when I can. The characters are interesting with unique griefs in their backgrounds, and the secret society storylines made me shiver. I had some suspicions about who the true villain was, but I was still surprised at the revelation. I would highly recommend this to anyone who enjoys historical suspense. I listened to the audiobook and really enjoyed it, as the narrator sounds a bit like Julia Sawalha, and it was fun to picture Dorcas Lane from Lark Rise to Candleford as the person behind the voice.
I received my copy of the audiobook from the publisher. All thoughts in this review are my own.
If you’re a Bridgerton fan you will love this book! The protagonist is a strong female survivor trying to find her way in a world built around women finding the right husband. The desire to remain single is looked at like a failure and a women’s motives are disbelieved. Add to this the central mystery of the disappearance and the story moves along quickly while providing wonderful details and atmosphere.
The Vanishing at Loxby Manor by Abigail Wilson is my second book by this author and I find that I quite enjoyed it. The two stories that I have read take place in earlier times, when life was different, but so very much the same. Even though they traveled by horseback and carriages, and lived in stone homes and castles, they still loved and fought and dreamed and worried and hoped. Loxby Manor holds many secrets. When Charity returns to Loxby to visit her friend Seline after five years away, she is troubled to find the house up in arms over a scandal involving Seline and a stable boy. When Seline and that same young man go missing, there is much speculation, but Charity is convinced that Seline did not run off with him, as others in her home think. When Seline's brother, and the man who once held Charity's heart, Piers, comes to town at the same time, the two of them must set aside the past to find Seline and discover the secrets held tightly in the Manor. It was very well written and I had the wrong person in mind as the "bad guy" the entire time. I was rather surprised by the ending, in a delightfully good way. I had the pleasure of listening to the audiobook and having an ebook copy, so when I wasn't in the car listening, I could also read. I found myself reading in the narrator's voice; she did a very good job.
Thanks to #NetGalley and the publisher for the chance to listen to and read this story. All thoughts and opinions are wholly my own. #TheVanishingatLoxbyManor #bookstagram #all_the_pages
With thanks to NetGalley and the publisher for an audio arc of this book, all opinions expressed here are my own.
The Vanishing at Loxby Manor by Abigail Wilson is the first book I have read from this author. I wasn’t quite sure what to expect, but was pleasantly surprised and will definitely look for more of her work in the future.
Weaving together a missing person, a childhood romance, miscommunication, scandal and secret society. Set among pantaloons and duels, this book kept me on the edge of my seat and guessing til the very end. The narrator did an excellent job and fit well with the story. A fascinating 4 star read.
The Vanishing at Loxby Manor is a fun regency romance/mystery. The author tells an intriguing story with interesting characters. I always love a good story that takes place in England during the regency period so it was especially fun to have a good mystery to go with it. The author did a great job of creating a gothic atmosphere akin to Jane Eyre. There are family secrets that we learn along the way with our heroine. I really enjoyed this book and I look forward to reading more by this author.
Plot line: After five years Charity Halliwell has returned from Ceylon to stay as the Cavanagh family’s guest and finds that her bestie Seline has gone missing. To find her friend back she had to pair up in an investigation with her ex and also Seline's brother Piers Cavanagh.
Review: A perfect blend of mystery, romance, family drama and gothic historical fiction in one book. Engaging story and interesting characters. Also Laura Kirman was amazing as the narrator.
Thank you Thomas Nelson publication and Netgalley for this audiobook.
This is a gripping 'what happened to...' story. It deftly combines romance, suspense and the historical with a twist of the gothic. Leaning on the language and attitudes of the 19th century novel, it becomes more exciting and modern as the narrative progresses. This is in part due to its pace, and although some of the twists and turns in the middle of the novel can get a little confusing, it is a great read. The narrator Laura Kirman does a fantastic job of bringing the characters to life by altering and imbuing her voice with their characteristics, which I loved.
I thought this was an awesome mix of historical romance and dark mystery! I found the main character to be such a strong woman, she was a lot of fun to follow throughout the storyline! There is a dark murder mystery that was filled with twists and turns that had me guessing constantly! I loved the time period of the story, and found that it helped with the overall atmosphere. Overall, I thought this was a great story, and I look forward to reading more from this author!
I was provided a gifted copy of this book for free. I am leaving my review voluntarily.
The Vanishing at Loxby Manor is a historical mystery/suspense set in 1816 in Kent, England with gothic elements which involves a disappearance, murders and a secret society. I listened to the audiobook and I liked the clarity in Laura Kirman's narration which helped me keep up with the story without difficulty; the writing is also good by the author. However, I feel that it would have been a better option for me to read the book instead or read it along with the audio to get a better feel of the mystery/suspense and gothic elements of the book.
My thanks to NetGalley, the publisher Thomas Nelson and the author for Abigail Wilson for the audio ARC of the book. The book was published on 26th January 2021.
THE VANISHING AT LOXBY MANOR by Abigail Wilson brings Regency romance, mystery, intrigue, and suspense to life in her newest historical romantic suspense novel, set in 1816 in Kent England in the village of East Whitloe.
Abigail Wilson has created a gothic romance that is filled with great characters and a mystery that unfolds chapter by chapter. A perfect blend of mystery, family relationships, lost years, and star-crossed love. There is also an integral thread of letting go of past tragedies and moving into the future. This book is perfect for readers who love Regency fiction in gothic settings.
And I loved Laura Kirman as the narrator. She did a brilliant job. This was a historical, clean romance mystery and nothing about it was predictable. I was simply sitting on the edge of my seat the whole time.
Fast paced, interesting characters with a lot of history and mystery. Charity arrives back at Loxby Manor, a home that belongs to her childhood friend that she hasn't seen for years. But this story doesn't start at her arrival, but at the moment when she is walking down a hallway trying to find her childhood friend, wondering why her friend isn't back and wondering what's keeping her.
There is a lot of history with her and this family and you, as the reader, are slow to be introduced what all has happened and why. The mystery is foremost in the story and definitely made the story fast paced and easy to read.
I got to enjoy this as an audio book, which I absolutely loved. The narrator really made the character and the atmosphere come alive. But I thought she made the love interest sound a bit too old at times....and I kept forgetting which one was talking...and kept thinking he was an older neighbor or the dad.
I unfortunately had to DNF this one. I just couldn't get into the narration and the story wasn't catching my attention. I might come back and try it again at a later date but at this point I think it was a matter of wrong book at the wrong time.
The Vanishing at Loxby Manor is my first read from author Abigail Wilson and I truly enjoyed the world of Charity Halliwell. I must say that in retrospect this story was a bit of old crown England mixed with the mysterious shroud of The Dead Poet's Society. When Charity returns to Loxby Manor she finds her visit unwelcome by the extended family, and her closest friend is acting strangely to run out in the middle of the night, and not return. As the Cavanaugh family searches, more secrets come to light. Can Charity and Piers put their past love behind them and work together before more scandal erupts? I truly enjoyed the mystery and twists in this book and hope to read more treats from Ms. Wilson. I received an ARC of this book, all opinions are my own.
The Vanishing of Loxby Manor by Abigail Wilson is a very good listen. Thank you #NetGalley for letting me review this audiobook at my request. I thoroughly enjoyed it. The author wrote great imagery and had some very unexpected twists. Without giving away too much of a spoiler, I hadn't guessed who the killer was. Kudos to the author for that. The narration performance by Laura Kirman was well done. She added to my enjoyment. The book is great blend of gothic and regency, which appealed to me.
After five years, Charity Halliwell has returned back home to Kent, England. It has been arranged for her to stay for a year at Loxby Manor, home to an old friend, Seline, as well as Piers Cavanagh, the only love she ever had, who left her heartbroken. She is looking to become a governess, but also in the hopes of letting go of a secret that haunts her. Her first night, Seline has disclosed that there has been some talk and she is currently in the bad graces of her family. After seeing a light outside in the distance, she leaves abruptly, but promises not to be gone long. However, Seline fails to return, leaving it to Charity to inform Mrs. Cavanagh that her daughter is missing. The family believes that Seline has left to wed after reading a note that mysteriously appears in Selines' room. Charity isn't quite convinced. The more she fishes for information and to make heads or tales of what really happened the night Seline went missing, the more she realizes that she is not the only one with a secret. Can Charity unravel the mystery before it's too late? Can she mend her relationship with Piers?
This was an audio book ARC that I was fortunate enough to receive through Netgalley. I absolutely loved this book! The narrator did an amazing job and the story itself offered so much to the reader. This is one of the first historical romantic mysteries I've read and it won't be the last by any means. This is also my first read by Abigail Wilson and she definitely does not disappoint! I was left in suspense until the very end, enjoying every second of this book. If you haven't read this book, definitely add it to your list! I don't think you'll be disappointed! I rate this ⭐⭐⭐⭐💫
I received this book from NetGalley in exchange for an honest review.
The Vanishing at Loxby Manor was a delight to read. The storyline is very interesting. I had never read anything that involved a mysterious secret society. I've read a lot of mysteries before and the genre isn't my favorite but this book was definitely worth the read.
Charity is damaged. Reeling from an assault, she's convinced she will never love a man or marry. A temporary stay at the Loxby Manor is just what she needs to get her bearings back before she continues with her life. She never would have guessed her best friend would go missing or that the man who broke her heart would return. Now she and Pierce must work together to find out exactly what happened to Celine.
This was an intriguing novel that I recommend for readers of mystery and romance.
This book is appropriate for ages 16+ for some graphic content.
Love this book lots of different and unexpected turns at every corner. I enjoyed this mystery with a little romance. Can't wait to read another one by this author.
I received an ARC via Netgalley and this review is my opinion.
The Vanishing at Loxby Manor is the standalone by Abigail Wilson, it is historical fiction with a gothic twist creating much mystery from the first page. As soon as I saw the beautiful cover I wanted to read the book, it reminds me so much of one of my favourite places Whitby Abbey made famous by Bram Stoker.
Set in 1816 England, Charity Halliwell returns to Loxby Manor, the home of her childhood friend Seline and her brother Piers Cavanagh, who also happens to be Charitys only love, When her friend disappears on the first night Charity arrives she sets her mind on finding her and uncovering the secrets of Loxby Manor and it inhabitance. It is definitely a who done it type book, filled with mystery, suspense and kept me hooked throughout. The authors attention to details is amazing. I haven't actually read anything but her before but will definitely look out for other books she writes.
I chose the audio version of the book, the narrator did a great job but it was just a bit slow for me, I think I would have enjoyed it even more had I read the book version instead. I am quite a fast reader and found some of the narration dragged in places.
Thank you to Thomas Nelson and Zondervan via Netgalley for gifting me a copy of this book in exchange for my personal opinion.
