A Cowboy Kind of Love, the sixth book in Donna Grant's Heart of Texas series, is an entertaining romantic suspense novel with an original, dark, and kind of crazy, dramatic story that has surprising twists and turns and an interesting cast of characters, including truly heinous villains. Taryn and Jace are likeable characters you can’t help but root for and want them to succeed. Rich description and character development draw readers right into the story, which is a quick read once the suspense and action kicks in. While the suspense elements are nicely developed, the romantic conflict between Jace and Taryn feels like it may be resolved just a little bit too soon before readers can really connect to both characters and their relationship fully. However, readers who don’t care for unnecessary drama may appreciate this. The novel can be read as a stand-alone, but characters and references to prior storylines do appear in this one. Readers who love emotional romantic suspense that is a bit dark in content, should like this one.
Jace Wilder is still trying so hard to move on with his life, but how can he when he’s still yearning for the love of his life Taryn, who mysteriously disappeared with no warning? Especially after she returns to town years later just as suddenly, hiding dangerous secrets tied to her disappearance, her life in peril. Even though he knows he shouldn’t get involved with her again, how can he not? Seeing her again brings all those emotions and desires that he’s been trying so hard to bury – with work, alcohol, anything – rushing back to the surface. On the night that Taryn Hillman left the man she loved behind in Clearview without a word, her whole life and world fell apart and she couldn’t tell a soul about it. Not even the man she loved. After all this time, she takes her one chance to free herself from the horror show that her life has become, returning to her hometown and to Jace. Though she is reluctant to involve him, possibly endangering his life, she finds she doesn’t have much choice. She needs his help…she needs him. Can theses two trust and rely on each other and take a second chance to rediscover love? Grant makes a convincing case in this entertaining and surprisingly dark, suspenseful, contemporary romance.
A Cowboy Kind of Love by Donna Grant is from the Heart of Texas series. This was a terrific second chance, romance story that I loved reading. Jace and Taryn were in love and then she left town five years ago. Jace was heartbroken. Then after five years, she returns. Can the two of them reunite? Read the story and see if they can and why she left so suddenly. This is another excellent book from Donna Grant who puts so much in her writing style that the reader is captivated.
Thank you NetGalley for providing this book to me for my honest review.

Jace hasn’t been the same since the love of his life, Taryn, disappeared in the night with her entire family nearly five years ago. He doesn’t know why she left so unexpectedly or why she hasn’t reached out in all this time. She obviously didn’t care the way he did, but he is still haunted with memories of her and he can’t let her go.
Taryn has been living in forced servitude to a drug kingpin, Boyd Walters, ever since she and her family were kidnapped. Her dad picked up a drug habit after her mother died that left Taryn always finding ways to cover his debts and keep their family together. Then, her brother picked up the habit as well. They both got in too deep with Boyd and they all had to pay the price.
Boyd killed her brother and father right in front of her. And, Taryn would do anything to protect her sister, Payton. She sold drugs for Boyd to keep Payton out of any illegal activities so she could keep her innocence.
Now, Taryn finally has a chance to buy their freedom. She has days to go back to her hometown to gather the half a million needed to pay off Boyd. And, if she doesn’t return on time, Boyd will kill Payton. But will he keep his end of the bargain? And, is Payton even alive now?
Jace keeps thinking he saw Taryn, and he finally finds her. He is so angry that she didn’t come to him on her own. However, when he discovers what she’s been through he is determined to help get her free once and for all.
The last few books in the series, where a bit underwhelming for me. But thankfully, this one has made up for that. I absolutely loved this story. I was really hoping it would be a good one, since Jace has been one of my favorite characters in the series for quite a while. And Grant didn’t disappoint.
I loved how Jace and his friends banded together (as always) to help those in need.
I was a bit surprised this book didn’t touch more on Jace’s prisoner of war experience though. But maybe that’s for the best.
And, there was quite the plot twist that I wasn’t expecting that shows just how evil one fictional character can be!
This was a great second chance romance story and I can’t wait for the next book in the series. I have to imagine that it’ll be Ryan’s turn next … we shall see!
Donna may be more famous to me for her paranormal series but her Cowboy ones are quickly becoming one of my favourites
I received a copy from Netgalley and I am voluntarily leaving my own honest opinion
She vanished a few years ago and he's been heart broken ever since. He was about to propose and the pain is real.
A few years later she is back, does he hate her or feel angry or just relieved? She needs to tell her story of danger.
He didn't see that coming and is determined to help her, he and all his friends and their connections have to fight the enemy so she can live her life, preferably with him.
A lot of suspense and danger as the story roller coasters to the end, just when it all feels safe it may well not be.
Great story and likeable characters.
This is the third book in the series that I have read so far. And it is as good as the other two. I loved everything about Jace and his love, protection, and determination he had for Taryn. Then we find out all she has been through the last five years along with her struggle to protect her sister, and I loved her too. But them coming back together was if time never passed. Their connection was intense and solid. They both had the same initial feelings that withstood time. Their joining is beautiful. The action in this book is intense. I wish there would have been a little more comeuppance with the villains, but I am satisfied with the ending and the happiness Jace and Taryn were finding.
Although now I want a book for Ryan and Brick. Those will be off the charts amazing. I received this book in exchange for an honest review from the publisher.
This romance lived on the border of western, military, and suspense for me. It was a sexy, thrilling novel. I read it in one sitting and have zero regrets about that.
Both Jace and Taryn bring tough things to the table, and rough pasts. The way they come together and find peace and healing in each other is truly beautiful.
I'm tempted now to go back and read more in this series if they are all this entertaining.
What an ending. The sister, Payton, was a surprise. The book is a nice romance with a big dose of mystery. it is amazing how far Taryn will go to protect her family. The story is interesting and yet there are places you just want to shut your eyes and hope she makes better choices. I liked the book.
A COWBOY KIND OF LOVE is the sixth instalment in Donna Grant’s contemporary, adult HEART OF TEXAS romantic, suspense series. This is former US military soldier Jace Wilder, and Taryn Hillman’s story line. A COWBOY KIND OF LOVE can be read as a stand alone without any difficulty. Any important information from the previous story lines is revealed where necessary.
Told from several third person perspectives A COWBOY KIND OF LOVE follows the rekindling romance and relationship between Jace Wilder, and Taryn Hillman. Five years earlier, Taryn walked away from the only man she would ever love leaving a heart broken Jace Wilder in her wake. Fast forward to present day wherein Taryn Hillman returns to her hometown of Clearview, Texas, desperate and searching for help. Enter Jace Wilder. What ensues is the rebuilding relationship between Taryn and Jace, and the potential fall-out as sins of the father have targeted our heroine.
Jace Wilder struggles with issues of PTSD having survived torture and imprisonment while stationed overseas. The only balm to his pain was Taryn Hillman, the woman who ripped out his heart, never looking back. With Taryn’s return to Clearview, Texas, Jace battles between head and heart knowing he will forgive Taryn for anything including destroying his soul. Taryn Hillman is in trouble, and believes she can find a solution in Clearview, Texas but Taryn struggles with what was, and what will never be, including her one-time relationship with our story line hero.
The relationship between Taryn and Jace is one of second chances. Taryn never wanted to walk away from the only man she would ever love but walking was never her choice when all she wanted to do was run back into his arms. Jace Wilder has struggled since he received the text from Taryn breaking his heart but Jace never expected Taryn to return, and never expected her to bring the wrath of h*ll in her wake. The $ex scenes are intimate and passionate without the use of over the top, sexually graphic language and text.
There is a large ensemble cast of secondary and supporting characters including most of the previous story line heroes, all of whom are former or current members of law enforcement or the US military branches. We are introduced Taryn’s sister Payton; questionable yet powerful businessman Boyd Walters, and his right hand man Brick. Donna Grant has introduced several new characters with the potential for many more stories.
A COWBOY KIND OF LOVE is a story of suspense, intrigue, betrayal and vengeance. A story of power and control, love and hate, forgiveness and acceptance. The character driven premise is haunting and edgy; the romance is captivating ; the characters are tragic, animated and spirited but if you are looking for a ‘cowboy’ feel to your story line, this is not the book. The story line is first and foremost a story of romantic suspense, the cowboy aspect is virtually non-existent.

Jace has been a shell of himself when his girlfriend Taryn disappears after a simple text. Taryn has not been living a simple life, she has been helping her family out of trouble. When Taryn reappears in town, Jace doesn't know how to feel. He doesn't want to lose her again though.
Taryn doesn't want to involve Jace in her problems, but she is on a deadline with someone you can't mess with, or suffer the consequences. Jace is willing to take the risk to help her, and his friends are gathering together to help. They spend as much time as they can together to make up for lost time, but the pressure is intense.
There are some twists and turns throughout, keeping the pace moving, and your jaw dropping. I love that this group has formed their own little family and they are willing to step in to help any one of them.
A Cowboy Kind of Love is the sixth book in Donna Grant's exciting and sensual Heart of Texas series. I've been with this series since book three, and I still find myself waiting for more volumes. It remains fresh and electrifying with characters that feel like family. This story stands alone, but we have appearances by all the prior couples. I need a flowchart to keep track of everyone!
Jace Wilder, former Marine Raider and POW and now a rancher, is still trying to get his life back together five years after Taryn Hillman, the love of his life, disappeared from Clearview, Texas. He never heard from her once she left...but now she's back, and in serious trouble. Her life fell apart the night she was forced to leave Jace, and now that she may have a chance to free herself from her horrifying situation, she heads back to Clearview. The years apart have not dimmed the deep love and affection they have for each other. Jace vows to do everything in his power to protect Taryn. But will they survive to have the opportunity to finally have the life together they so deserve?
Once again Donna Grant returns us to Clearview, Texas, a place that now feels like home. The series still feels fresh, and like the previous books there is excitement and action as well as deep love between the hero and heroine. I loved Jace and Taryn as a couple. They loved each other when Taryn was ripped away from Jace's life and that love still exists despite five years apart. Jace would do anything to help Taryn take back her life and escape from the horrible situation she was forced into. Their physical attraction is still strong as ever, and we are treated to some lovely steamy bits here throughout the story. As much as I liked the romance, however, it was Jace's relationships with his friends that I found the most touching. They had been brothers in arms, and now they could not be closer than actual brothers. As Jace would do anything to protect Taryn, his friends would protect the two of them no matter the consequences. My only problem was keeping their names straight and trying to remember which man was with which woman and their stories! But still, I had a blast reading this. There was a twist near the end that totally surprised me; it's great to still be surprised after so many installments in the series. I'm so, so hoping that Sheriff Ryan gets his own shot at love. Pretty please?
I received an ARC of this book courtesy of the publisher and NetGalley. I received no compensation for my review, and all thoughts and opinions expressed are entirely my own.
This is the second book in this series that I have read (out of 6), so I believe the fact that I didn’t know some of the other characters’ stories didn’t faze me as much as it could have. This was an entertaining story with a good deal of suspense. In fact, even though this is considered a romance, and there is an HEA, the storyline was more about getting the bad guys. Jace and Taryn were both interesting characters who I could connect with. Their story was, for the most part, believable and I enjoyed the camaraderie of the entire Cowboy gang. A quick easy satisfying read.
If I remember correctly Donna Grant said this is the last book in this series and she goes out with a bang in this book. This is Jace's story finally. Once the book starts it moves quickly. We find out what happened to Taryn for the last 5 years. Jace of course is there along with the rest of the crew to help Taryn. Don't think anyone expect what happened. This book is fast-paced, emotional with just enough heat. Ryan doesn't get his happily ever after yet so maybe there will be a spinoff so he can get his. We can only hope.
How many times can you say love I love love loved this one everyone should read it stop what you are doing and pick it up you won’t regret it
Jace is back in Clearview. It's the best medicine a doctor can order a person who was held as a prisoner of war. Wide open spaces, good friends that have been in the military, family and physical therapy. He met Taryn and fell in love. Now Taryn has disappeared and everyone went searching but couldn't find her. Five years later and she is back. All the old feelings are back but trouble has come calling. Now all of Jace's friends have started a plan of attack to get Taryn's sister back. The twists and turns at the end will keep you guessing. I love a good HEA!
After all these years, Jayce hadn't gotten over Taryn and the way she walked out of his life. Suddenly she reappears because she is desperate for help and she knows he will help her. Jayce wants answers and explanations which Taryn gives him. Her story is terrifying, but Jayce is not worried. Taryn is back in his life and he will do whatever it takes to keep her safe. Will he succeed?
The story draws readers in from the beginning and doesn't release its grip until the very end. This well plotted story moves very quickly and is a real page turner. Jayce's friends quickly enter the picture. They are accomplished and very good at what they do. They have very impressive skills and embody what friendship and loyalty mean. There. are twists and turns and shocking surprises that come together as the narrative races to its conclusion.. Highly recommended.
I received a complimentary copy of this book from St. Martin's and NetGalley. The opinions expressed in this review are my own.
It was great being back in Clearview, Texas to read about Jace Wilder and Taryn Hillman!
Jace was left pining for Taryn for five years, he can't move on! Ryan gets Jace home and while he is trying to find the keys, Jace totally inebriated somehow manages to get himself inside. His door was unlocked, which didn't concern him at the time, and as he made his way to the living room where he saw a shadow that appeared to be Taryn, then she was gone.
After stopping at an intersection, he swore that Taryn pulled up next to him, and he attempted to follow but lost the vehicle. Thinking he was seeing things, he returned to the intersection where he last thought he saw her and traveled down the back roads discovered the vehicle parked at a hotel. He follows her to a restaurant, and after five years comes face to face with her. He didn't get the answers he sought.
Taryn didn't want to leave five years ago but didn't have much of a choice. Now she's back in Clearview on a mission, Taryn is in trouble and requires a lot of money to complete her task. She calls a man, that she never wanted to see again, except she fails miserably at the task he entrusts her with. All her cards are exposed, where even the guys she is willing to turn to for help, send her on her way. There is one man that she knows will help her, although she is fully aware of the risks of him doing so. She is out of options and heads to see Jace.
Once Jace hears Taryn out, he realizes that Taryn didn't abandon him, and he's going to get her the cash but despite her protesting, Jace is going to see her through this because he lost her once and he's not going to lose her again. It's become his mission and his friends who are more like his brothers put a plan together. Despite the risks to themselves, it's all for one and one for all!
Jace and Taryn's love is enduring that despite all they've gone through, each never forgot the other. I love how the others jumped on board while accepting Taryn as one of their own. It goes to show that family doesn't always have to be blood. The ending hinted that the others were going to play matchmaker for Ryan, who after his divorce doesn't want a relationship so I'm hoping that means another book in the series!
I requested and received an ARC from NetGalley via St. Martin's Press and I have voluntarily reviewed this book.
This is a second chance love story for Tryn and Jace. After all these years Jace is still not over her- his one true love who disappeared without explanation all those years ago. Tryn has an opportunity to finally cut the chain of her capture all she needs is money. The only that can help her is her only true love, Jace. Their reunion is not sweet at first but when she told him her story Jace will make everything to save her and keep her in his life. So the story is ok they reunite very quickly in the book and all we read until salvation is just planning of it and they are having a lot of time making up for the time they are lost in bed. I like that the story is not predictable and we see how all the gang is doing.
I volunteered to review an ARC of this book for NetGalley
A Cowboy Kind of Love by Donna Grant
Heart of Texas #6
What would you do to protect your family? How would you manage being a “slave” to a drug lord for five years? Would you give up on the love of your life or hope…someday…maybe…? This story was not my favorite in the series but was an escape from pandemic lockdown and took me to Texas where a second chance for Taryn and Jace took place…along with a bit of derring-do.
What I liked:
* The men that form the nucleus of this series: strong, stalwart, dedicated, lethal, and loving
* Seeing how some of the previous couples are doing
* Jace: a good man though a bit broken, into the bottle more than he should be, needs his woman, and is willing to do anything to keep her safe.
* Taryn: strong, resilient, family oriented, takes on more than she should – I had some trouble relating to her but as the story progressed, she grew on me.
* That there was a second chance for Jace and Taryn
* The action scenes
* The twist I wasn’t expecting
* That the good guys won
* That the bad guys lost
* That there will be more books, or could be more, in the series. I want to know how Ryan and Brick end up.
What I didn’t like:
* The evil people I was meant not to like
* That Taryn couldn’t figure out a way to get away without doing all that she did to “save her family”
Did I enjoy this book? Yes
Would I read more in the series? Yes
Was it believable? Not 100% but it was fun
Thank you to NetGalley and St. Martin’s Paperbacks for the ARC – This is my honest review.
3-4 Stars
Donna Grant deftly blends passion, danger and desire in her latest irresistible contemporary romance, A Cowboy Kind of Love.
The bottom had fallen out of Jace Wilder’s world when the love of his life, Taryn Hillman had unexpectedly skipped town and left him completely and utterly heartbroken. Since that fateful day when Taryn had walked out on him, Jace has been trying to rebuild his life, but it’s not been easy. Still haunted by memories of the past and unable to forget Taryn, Jace wonders whether he will ever be able to move on and build a future with somebody else. But will anyone ever measure up to Taryn? Can Jace ever love again? Or is he destined to spend the rest of his life yearning for a love that can never be? Jace had resigned himself to a life without Taryn – until she walks back into his life bringing with her a maelstrom of feelings and emotions which he had tried so hard to keep hidden.
Taryn’s entire world had crashed down around her ears one horrifying night. Having been left with no other choice but to leave everything she knew and everyone she loved behind, Taryn had disappeared without a trace – even if leaving Jace behind had been the hardest thing she ever had to do. But staying in Clearview would mean putting the man she loved in danger and Taryn wouldn’t have been able to live with herself if Jace was harmed because of her. When Taryn saw a tiny chink of light at the end of the long tunnel she had been trapped in, she had returned to town and as soon as she clapped eyes on Jace again the attraction that always sizzled between the two of them came rushing back to the surface with a vengeance.
When Jace realizes that Taryn is in danger, he vows to move heaven and earth to protect her. However, protecting his heart will be the biggest challenge of all. Regardless of how hard he tries, staying away from Taryn proves impossible. But although his body yearns for her, his heart wonders whether he can ever trust her again. Will a future for Jace and Taryn ever be possible? Or will past secrets condemn them both to a lonely future full of regret and heartbreak?
Donna Grant writes the most delicious cowboy heroes and in Jace Wilder, she has created an honorable, brooding and devastatingly handsome hero it is impossible not to fall in love with. A Cowboy Kind of Love is an intense, emotional and captivating tale rich in romance, suspense and drama that will keep readers eagerly turning the pages. Donna Grant layers her story with romantic tension, nail-biting intrigue and steamy passion that will tug at the heartstrings and leave readers with a great big smile on their face.
A delightful read that will satisfy romantics everywhere, Donna Grant’s A Cowboy Kind of Love is not to be missed.
