The representation here is very important. It is cute, but, I am not a huge fan of the art style. The story is still important however.
Readers have plenty of diversity to look at in Pride Puppy! Julie McLaughlin does a fantastic job of getting across many ideas, races, genders, and of course parade items. The activity at the back of the book to look up items under the alphabet in each drawing is a great teaching tool for kids.
The rhyming part was not smooth in some areas or it could just be me. Robin Stevenson makes the story more about the parade and what there is to see and not losing the puppy. Therefore the child focuses on learning and the parade and not fretting about losing the puppy.
The activity exercise of looking up items is what makes this book worthy. It teaches kids the alphabet, common words, and how to identify them all the while spending time under the rainbow.
I received an ARC of this book and I am writing a review without prejudice and voluntarily.
Pride Puppy is a lighthearted story for young kids and everyone else. Our children are in a need to be exposed to different type of lifestyle, love, religion, etc. without steering them into the direction of prejudice and hatred. The author wittily implement the use of searching for their dogs and receive aid from kind people who may be different from one another, showing that when you find right people to boost yourself into the land of acceptance and love. This is perfect for preschoolers to 2nd graders! 3rd graders and older still can read the book independently.
I loved the pride theme throughout this abc book. It was so cute and each page told a lot of different stories. You can read this book over and over again and see new details in the illustrations.
Cute story, easy read for young children about acceptance and inclusivity.
LGBTQ+
Art style is just too cute.
Aimed at children from 3-5 years old, Robin Stevenson’s Pride Puppy is a lively tale. With bright, vibrant illustrations by Julie McLaughlin, this book will easily appeal to kids of every age.
An LGBTQ inclusive tale, I especially appreciate the wide variety of shapes, sizes, and colors of the folks in the story. The background is filled with fetching images, and the people are adorned in festive clothing and appealing tattoos.
What a wonderful and subtle way to add messages of inclusivity at story time.
A very different ABC book. It does not only feature words, but what the letters do drive the plot of the lost dog at a pride parade.
My favorite feature is reminiscent of [book:Where's Wally?|6118605] books. Remember the last pages of the book? The ones that ask you to find other people in the spreads? Well, this book includes a list of other items to search for in the pride parade.
Pride Puppy! is a cute A-B-C book about celebrating at a pride parade. It's written in a way I've never really seen before, describing the entire day in a never-ending poetic waterfall of words. (On the Kindle, the formatting is a bit strange. It makes it a bit difficult to read through, which is too bad because the momentum of the rhyme and rhythm is really fun to read!)
The illustrations are full of bright colours and inspiring characters, and there's no shortage of things to look at--like a real parade. While the plot is loosely about a runaway pet, that part is mostly told through the illustrations, where kids can search for puppy running through the crowds. The true heart of the story is the celebration of LGBTQ+ individuals being loved for who you are and being able to share that authentically with family and friends.
The book is age appropriate, fun to look at, and a great addition to the Canadian LGBTQ+ books available. Thanks to NetGalley and Orca Books for making this available as a digital ARC.
This was an adorable picture book to share with my nibling! This beautifully illustrated picture book told a sweet story of lost and recovered pet at a Pride parade. The short text used rhyming and alliteration to make an enjoyable story. It was an absolute joy to read out loud.
The illustrations, in particular, were fantastic! The colors were bright and clean, and the style was adorable. The people showcased a wide variety of body type, skin color, ages, and relationships.
What was unexpectedly fun was a list of words at the end, setting up a scavenger hunt through the story, encouraging reread after reread. I cannot wait to buy a physical copy of this for my nibling’s library.
This is a beautiful, inclusive, fun and heartwarming book. The illustrations pop off the pages and will appeal to readers young and old. My daughter enjoyed pointing and naming the things in the background of the pictures (outfits, colors, and objects to name a few). The rhyming alphabet format was also fun to read as a parent. I absolutely loved this book and my daughter and I read it several times. I also loved the word search at the end.
I am so impressed by this book, it's hard to know where to begin! This is an alphabet book that is bursting with colours, pride, inclusivity, and an actual story to connect the flow of the letters. I didn't think it was possible to love it more when I got to the end, only to discover that there's a list of items for kids to search and find throughout the book-- so it's also an activity book that will keep kids occupied and learning so much more than I anticipated. Bravo! This will be a smash hit this summer, during Pride!
I love this book. It was adorable. The images and the cast were fun and I felt that the message was beautiful and simple. Bonus points for being an abc book cause my son loves them!! Super bonus points for the diversity.
This book is so wonderful! Gorgeous, colorful illustrations with great vocabulary for every letter of the alphabet, and a beautiful, inclusive message. I can't wait to buy this for my nephew who loves puppies and recommend it to everyone I know.
I was granted eARC access to Pride Puppy! by Robin Stevenson, ills. Julie McLaughlin by the publisher Orca Book Publishers via NetGalley. Thank you so much! My thoughts are my own and my review is honest.
Pride Puppy! is a beautifully illustrated alphabet book that tells the story of catching a runaway dog at the Pride parade, and I absolutely loved it. This book is so much fun to look at, it normalizes the vast spectrum of human identities, and it presents some fun alternatives to the tired old "a is for apple" vocabulary lesson. It also features a list of more words for each letter at the end, and this is a scavenger hunt to go back and find those things in the pictures. This one isn't going to get boring any time soon, even when the kids want it read multiple times a day for three weeks in a row.
Whether you're a member of the LGBTQ+ community or an ally, if you're raising your kids in a pride-positive way or teaching at a pride-positive school, this is a great book to snag for preschool to primary grades aged kids working on their early literacy skills.
Thank you to NetGalley and the publisher for providing me with an e-arc of this book in exchange for an honest review.
I adored this book. It's a great portrayal of pride festivities. It was a lot of fun with bold colors, diverse characters, and cute puppies causing mayhem. I really appreciated that they included many different pride flags and disabled characters. I loved that they met up with grandma and her super fun outfit. I think kids will have a lot of fun finding hidden items and animals from the list in the back.
I loved that in a year without in person pride festivities, it felt like a little slice of the community some of us have been desperately missing.
Pride Puppy! is a fun and colourful book for kids, that will open discussions approaching concepts of the LGBTQ+ community, diversity and inclusivity. There is so much to take in with the bright illustrations, having small details and new things to discover each time you look. The story follows an alphabetical format, but it incorporates a storyline within, as if you are spending a day walking through the pride parade with our characters. Though it is challenging to find applicable words for every letter, it would be appreciated if they had actual words rather than sounds and words that sound like the letter but are not spelled that way, which may confuse young readers. However, the book is accessible and simple enough for children, and also has a fun search and find game at the end, that will encourage many revisits to the images and rereads of the story.
Cute book with items for every letter of the alphabet. I especially like the end that has a search and find word list. Kids will love this book as it is bright and colorful and interesting, the illustrations are fun too!
This review is based on a ARC copy.
Such a cute ABC book with a storyline! I loved reading this to my son, it definitely showcased all the shades of the rainbow flag in a cute package easily accessible for young children.
This LGBTQ+ inclusive picture book was refreshing to read. I believe that having the queer community as the center of the story was unique. The illustrations were bright and colorful and busy. I valued the search and find word list at the end of the book.
Thanks to NetGalley for providing me with a copy of this book in exchange for my honest review.

My two children and I had so much fun reading this book together.
