Thank you to Netgalley, the publisher and the author for sharing this book for an honest review.

While this story was told at a slow pace it was still enjoyable. It’s about a couple in their 20s and a couple in their 40s. They meet, become friends and eventually more than friends. I wasn’t a huge fan of any of the characters.

The twists and turns kept me turning pages. The end was good but I didn’t feel satisfied.

The Other Passenger
Written by Louise Candlish

General Fiction (Adult), Mystery & Thrillers

Are you looking for a good thriller to get you through the lazy, hot days of summer, then look no further!

The Other Passenger by Louise Candlish is a mind game of epic proportions. Candlish take readers deep down in a rabbit hole of lies, deceit, betrayal and when you leave it’s like you’ve been through one of those old wringer washing machines, your mind is well blown.

James Buckley becomes the storyteller, as he should be, he is central to the crazy that takes place in this story.

The Other Passenger has four main characters, James, his partner Clare and Melia Roper (nee Quinn) and Kit (Christopher) Roper. This entire rollercoaster ride begins with Clare and Melia becoming friends at the Estate office, where Clare is a partner.

They start having dinners together and Kit and James even ride the river bus across the Thames to work daily. There is an age difference in the couples and along with that a difference in finances as well. You know that thing people say, the younger generation thinks everything should be handed to them, while the Gen X’ers have worked hard for what they had.

This gap between the couples tends to grow as each dinner passes and there comes a point when James and Clare think it might be time to cut back on their social activities. As Kit gets more aggressive in his conversations with James, you tend to agree with James and Clare’s idea.

That’s where the twists come in. Once those twists come, they come fast and furious. You have trouble keeping up with the narrative because it is blowing up, event after event. Little explosions that ignite the other explosions that just keep on coming.

I didn’t time how long this took story took to read. I read it in one sitting, non-stop, could not put it down and when I reached the end I knew that however long it had taken me to read, it was time well spent.

Thank you Netgalley and Simon & Schuster Canada for the opportunity to read this amazing thriller.

I truly enjoyed this book. The characters were interesting and mysterious. I grew to really like some of the characters, and detest others. Lots of game playing going on here, and munipulation. So much drama, jealousy, infidelity and then murder! What else could you ask fir in a book!
Thank you to Netgalley and the publisher for allowing me to read this twisted book.

I start by thanking NetGalley for my eARC in exchange for my honest review. A psychological thriller full of wonderful twists. If that is your goal to read then this Louise Candish novel will certainly deliver. The slower start is only meant to help build the strong characters needed to take you through the many twists, to places you could not expect, you will so enjoy the way to have been brought to the exciting conclusion.

This is my first exposure to this author and it definitely did not disappoint! This is a well-written, suspenseful, edge-of-your-seat thriller that will leave you breathless at times in anticipation of the next twist in the plot of which there are many. Her characters are well-developed though not necessarily likeable. None of them are whom they appear to be. This provocative, somewhat dark and twisted story grabs you from the first page and keeps you guessing until the very end where the author inserts a deliciously wicked twist.

Thank you to NetGalley and Simon & Shuster Canada who provided me with a copy of this book. I am voluntarily leaving an honest review.

In this book the reader follows Jamie after he is suspected of being involved in his friend Kit’s missing person case. Can Jamie prove his innocence?

To preface, I haven’t read anything by Louise Candlish before so I didn’t know what to expect in terms of writing style. I found the first half of the book was a bit slow moving, but at about 60% through things got interesting and I became more invested. The book jumps between present day and flashbacks throughout the past year, which helped lay the foundation for the plot unveiling. It wasn’t fast paced like other thrillers I’ve read, but had more of a slow burn. If that’s what you like, then you’ll probably enjoy this book. I found the ending fell a bit flat after the plot twist, but it still wrapped up the story alright.

Thank you to @netgalley and @simonschusterca for this ARC in exchange for an honest review.

This boook was a thrilling read the grabbed me abd would not let me out it down till the end. This book grabbed me and took me away to a world in which I could escape for awhile and be able to relax. It moves along at a pace which is perfect for the story, speeding up when necessary and slowing down when it needs to. The characters are unique and you want to know what is going through each of their minds and by the end you cant help but love them. This is a must read book that has to be on your TBR. Once you start there is no turning back.

Jamie and Claire are living the suburban dream- or so it seems to everyone on the outside. What they don’t know is that Jamie is underemployed, working at a coffee shop, and Claire is supporting the both of them with family money. When they meet Kit and Melia, a twenty-something couple, the four become instant friends. Jamie and Kit ride the boat into London for work together, followed by almost daily after-work drinks. Until Jamie disembarks the boat one day and is confronted by police officers who tell him that Kit is missing, and Jamie was the last person to see him alive.
Louise Candlish brings “Gone Girl” to a London ferry, with jealousy, infidelity and twisting suspense at its core, in her new novel “The Other Passenger”.
The majority of the characters in this novel are completely unlikable (the only exception being Jamie’s wife, Claire). Initially, I disliked Jamie, then I sympathized with him, but by the end I really disliked him. Melia and Kit were shallow millennials that were trying to live above their means, and neither of them were particularly relatable. However, the characters were unlikable on purpose, and this fact alone did not detract from my enjoyment of the novel.
About halfway through the novel, the story slowed a bit, and it took a bit of effort to keep going, but the first major unexpected twist hits about two thirds of the way through and I can tell you, it knocked my socks off! Once this twist started, more kept coming and they didn’t let up until the very end of the novel. I was surprised by the ending, and enjoyed the page-turning drama that led to the satisfying, justice-is-(almost)-served conclusion.
I am a fan of Candlish’s work, and am honoured to have read a few of her novels in advance, and “The Other Passenger” definitely hits the mark. Four people, all completely different from each other and bonded by jealousy and selfishness, tie together intricately when one of the protagonists go missing. Who did it, and for what reason? Candlish can definitely tell a suspenseful yarn, and this one left me guessing until the end.

I really enjoyed this thriller by Louise Candlish. At first, I wasn't so sure about Jamie (the main character) and what I felt about him. He seemed a bit bland, but it came together for me in the end. I liked the twists and turns, and while I may have predicted some of what happened, it wasn't like that the whole way through. I was pleasantly surprised and the last 30% of the book had me hooked and I read it in one sitting. I would definitely recommend The Other Passenger if you enjoy a good thriller, books that focus on marital woes and relationships between couples. It was good!

I loved this book! The first-person narrative made the story feel so personal; I experienced every emotion, and every fear. Jamie’s choices, influenced by his desires and his phobias, take him from a life not unlike my own, to an existence many of us couldn’t tolerate. Thank you NetGalley for this tension-filled thriller.

Jamie, a barista, becomes a suspect in the disappearance of a fellow commuter who happens to be his friend. The plot thickens and twists as the motivations and personal circumstances of Jamie and his friends are revealed.

This is the first novel I’ve read from this author. I requested and received a copy of the novel on NetGalley for an objective review as I was intrigued by the description. My rating is mid range because while I thought some of the twists and turns of the plot were cleverly done, I did not empathize or connect with the main character. I was also able to predict what was coming next. This novel will likely appeal to readers who enjoy a mild level of suspense.

This book was a slow burn but moved at a more brisk pace in the second half. I really liked that the main characters interactions were directly tied to a daily commute. The multiple twists took me by surprise and kept me guessing. The epilogue at the of the story was the perfect end to an engaging read.

I really wanted to like this book and the concept sounded just up my alley however I found this book to be a lot slower than I was expecting. I wasn't grabbed in this one right away and it made it hard to open the book sometimes. It wasn't until about a third of the way into the book that I really got hooked. What started off
as a slow burn sudden ignited and I couldn't put it down. I found the story line a little jumpy on who was talking when and the time jumps, while cleverly and properly laid out, were a little hard to wrap my head around and not something I enjoy reading. Not my favourite story by this author however there were parts I like so I give this book a 50-50. There were so many twists and turns in this book but I super enjoyed parts of it but other parts I
found were a little dry. This is one that unfortunately won't leave any lasting impression.

I read this book in one sitting, it was too good to put down! It's a real psychological thriller which I love, there are twists and turns and a shocker I wasn't expecting that had my jaw drop to the floor. I've never read anything from this author before, I'm so happy I came across this book, I think I found a new favorite author and can't wait to read more!! Highly recommend if you love thrillers that will actually thrill you!

The Other Passenger will knock your socks off!

It’s a smart thriller, and so suspenseful I ended up reading the book in one sitting!

The story moves between the developing friendship between James and his partner Clare, and Kit and Melia, and also the police investigation after Kit disappears. Candlish explores the familiar territory that she excels in – the darker side of human relationships, petty arguments, jealousy, class structure and more. Taut, polished writing drives this perfectly executed story forward to its thrilling conclusion.

Louise Candlish is one author who consistently delivers, not just in the quality of her work, but also with regular releases, so thankfully you don’t have to wait long between reads. For those new to her work, there’s an excellent backlist to choose from. Whether you’re already a fan, or this is your first Louise Candlish novel, you won’t be disappointed.

A thrilling ride from cover to cover.

Louise Candlish is a fantastic story-teller. However, I did find that this one fell a bit short. It’s difficult to pinpoint the exact reason for me. I wasn’t a huge fan of the characters; I found most of them unlikeable. The story began interestingly enough, but didn’t seem to pick up any steam. It was intriguing enough for me to finish, but lacked the usual strong storyline and writing that Louise Candlish is known for.

Get ready for a thriller with plenty of twists and turns when you read Louise Candlish’s latest novel The Other Passenger. This is the type of book that is fabulous to read in one seating. I predict that this book might be optioned for a movie which would be awesome.

Author Louise Candlish drops the reader into a group of commuters, friends by circumstance being on the same long ferry commute in London, who bond hating their jobs and comparing beyond their station. The two prominent couples are Kit Roper, an overbearing, sophisticated young man with a beautiful wife, Melia Roper, who live beyond their means. Then there is Jaimie, advancing beyond middle age, losing his marketing career and now working at a coffee shop, while his partner, Claire, the primary earner from a well-off family that had gifted them their regal home. The intrigue begins when Kit disappears on Christmas Eve, after a drunken fight with Jaimie, and the police suspect the reserved, passive Jaimie after he returns from holidays with Claire. Not everything is as it seems, of course, and relationships become complicated and intertwined, as motivations and explanations subtlely change when police pressure shines new light upon seemingly innocent (or nefarious) actions.

While some reviewers didn't like the characters, I didn't mind them and enjoyed the shifts. The ending, though, wasn't quite what I hoped for and extended longer than needed. But with my busy schedule these days, I consumed the book in two sittings and found it an enjoyable, quick read.

This is the first book I’ve read by this author and I will be looking for others written by her. I enjoyed her style of writing and the twists and turns that faced all the characters in the book, starting with two couples meeting and moving onto more characters coming into play on the commute to work on the River. A twisted tale of events that expose many traits of people in everyday life, affairs, lust, narcissistic behaviours, and many more.
