Building a functional emotional vocabulary is an important part of human development. "Cranky Right Now" by Julie Berry is a cute upcoming release that depicts a little girl on a day in which she feels off from center. In the tradition of "Alexander and the Terrible, Horrible, No Good Very Bad Day" this picture book provides the youngest reader examples of times we just feel grumpy but follows these everyday situations with restoration of a good mood, The overall message of Berry's book is that we sometimes have a bad day but that doesn't mean it is a bad life. I'm drawn to this narrative that sometimes our mood isn't triggered by a specific incident but is still valid.

Holly Hatam's illustrations are funny and truly add to the appeal of this book. I'm certain that this book will be enjoyed by children and their adults, even on their crankiest days.

Cranky Right Now is a children’s book that highlights feelings and how to deal with them. It shows kids that everyone gets cranky and has cranky days and that’s totally normal. Kids struggle with vocalizing “big” feelings so this a great resource for them. The illustrations are colorful and appropriate while the story is fast paced and relatable. As an educator, I saw some great words to use as vocabulary words or teaching moments in a read aloud.

This was such a cute book! I think most kids could relate to this book and when your feelings are just super frustrating and you're not too sure where they are coming from but you try your best to feel better. The little girl in this book is great at problem solving in a creative way. Once she isn't as cranky anymore, she is willing to help out her brother who is now in a cranky mood. This is a great story about how all feelings are natural and can usually be resolved when you are aware of your body and surroundings. One of the other things I absolutely loved about this book was the cute and diverse illustrations. I will absolutely recommend this to everyone!

Okay, so I know this is a kid's picture book, but it is basically perfect for me. I'm cranky sometimes too and this perfectly explains it. I also think my kids will relate to it; since they are cranky too.

This book is great for a read-aloud, and also for talking with kids about being cranky! The illustrations are lovely, too. The author talks about reasons kids can feel cranky, and how to recognize those feelings and own them. She also gives strategies on how to deal with crankiness.

Cranky Right Now is proof positive that we all get testy sometimes. The thing we have to learn is how to deal with this feeling of overwhelming agitation. Oftentimes crankiness is brought on by being hungry, being over tired, or if things don't go your way, just to name a few. This book assesses some causes of irritability, and most importantly, talks about how kids can process and work through these feelings of frustration and just feeling mad at the world.

The award-winning author helps kids recognize this emotion and suggests ways to deal with it head on. She offers simple ideas to help kids get a grip on their crankiness and to suggests ways to overcome it. She explains that sometimes it's okay to be cranky and assures the reader that these cantankerous feelings will pass and once again happiness and normalcy will reign.

The playful, witty illustrations are wonderful. They are colourful, full of action and emotions that kids will relate to. Every classroom and school library could benefit from this book. I highly recommend this it.

Cranky Right Now by Julie Berry is an absolutely adorable picture book that I could completely relate to. We have all been cranky at some point in time and needed time some time to 'turn that frown upside down.' This book would be an excellent way to talk about difficult feelings and emotions with younger children. The little girl in the book is too cute! #CrankyRightNow #NetGalley

This was a cute and quick read about learning to deal with our feelings, even if they’re negative. This would be a great read for children who are having a hard time naming their emotions.

I love that this book battles toxic positivity and reminds us that it is okay to feel the negative feelings too. It’s acceptable to be cranky right now no matter the reason. It’s okay to be cranky and hangry and to then find ways to tackle that crankiness when you are ready. It’s okay to sleep it off or stomp it off or cozy blanket it off. In this year, especially kids and adults alike need this book and what it stands for.

What first drew me to this book was the illustration, it is gorgeous, and I am always looking for books with diversity and inclusivity to add to my classroom. I feel it is important for children’s sense of belong and well being to come to an environment they see themselves and their interests represented.

I really enjoyed Julie Berry’s story. It was funny, witty, light and oh, so true! I appreciate how she validates children’s emotions and offer solutions. Her main character is so relatable, I feel this book is a great addition to any classroom or personally book collection. It is a great way to help children understand, verbalize, and process their big feelings.

Cute stour and great illustrations. I really like how it begins unrhyming (with occasional rhymes that may have been unintentional) and then begins rhyming as things come together for this very relatable character.

Cranky Right Now
by Julie Berry
Black history month brings this book to the forefront of the literacy world. But this book has more to it. It teaches children that their mood is not always easy to understand. A little girl is cranky, she blames everyone else, and refuses to take a nap. Until she does, she finds more reasons to be mad. After her nap she finds that nothing bothers her as it once did.

Sometimes we are cranky and that’s okay. This is a great book that talks about feeling cranky and the things to do to not feel so cranky anymore. I loved that the story was written in rhymes and the illustrations are just lovely. A great book to read to my students whenever we talk about an uncomfortable feeling in our tummies.

So much fun! A young girl is cranky and describes all the ways she's upset and goes through all the ways she tries to make herself feel better. Eventually when she feels better, she shares her "cranky boots" with her brother who is having his own cranky day. The text is just prose for the first half or so of the book and then changes to rhyming text, which is a bit weird, but the story is fun and the illustrations are absolutely fantastic! This is great for one-on-one reading and as a group read aloud!! I highly recommend it for Preschool - Gr. 2.

This book is perfectly relatable to all students, no matter their background. They can identify with being cranky or knowing someone who has been cranky. The illustrations are beautiful ans engaging. The story has an intermittent rhyming pattern. I felt like this threw off the rhythm of the story. But the story is great for starting discussions with school-age children.
