Frankie Gets a Doggie by Amy Huntington is a sweet story about a young boy adopting a dog. Colorful illustrations and rhyming text. #FrankieGetsaDoggie #NetGalley

I really enjoyed this book and thought that the story was brilliant!

I liked that they adopted a rescue dog and that it shows you don’t have to just add a puppy to your family as there are a lot of dogs out there looking for a second change and their forever home.

It was well written and had some lovely illustrations

I read it with my daughter and she loved it!

It is 5 stars from me for this one – very highly recommended!!

This picture book is super cute, and I really enjoyed it. The simple, rhyming text will be easy for children to understand, and the story weaves together the themes of adopting a new dog, having a day with Dad, and helping your cat get along with the new dog. It's short and sweet, with bold illustrations and a reassuring message about love.

I also appreciate how this book features a Black father and son together. Even though there are far more diverse books for young children than there used to be, it is still fairly rare for books to center a father-son relationship from any race, much less emphasize the role and importance of a Black father. This story is great regardless of the racial dynamics, but has additional value and audience appeal because of them.

Preschooler Frankie and his dad blow kisses to their house cat, then start down the avenue. Dad has big things in mind when they end up at the neighborhood animal shelter.
Written in an engaging verse, the cadence of this book moves readers through the sweet and challenging process of giving a pet a forever home.
Beautifully illustrated, this warm, joyful story is perfect cuddled-up lap reading.

This is sure to be a favorite book for all the little cat and dog fans that read it! Nice short, rhyming phrases and an adventure to get a new dog. I love the illustrations, especially the details about each of the dogs for adoption. The ending is the best! Cute book!

Frankie Gets a Doggie is not a bad book, but it just didn't work for me. So I guess you could say it wasn't bad, but it wasn't good either. It felt as if it was written for toddlers, which makes sense because Frankie is a toddler, but it was a bit long for their attention span. Other than that, it was well written and it's a good concept. The illustrations were well done, too. However, because of the length of the story I just don't think that I would recommend it to others.

What a cute story! The illustrations and story are beautiful! Our family loved previewing this story and will be looking for other work by this author to add to our list of favorites. The rhymes made this story fun to read and listen to!

Frankie Gets a Doggie
by Amy Huntington
Sometimes wishes come true. This is a cute story of a little boy and his relationship with his dog. The book shows the lazy nature of love and how the connections of animal and man can be reassuring. the art is similar to Keats. Very sweet

Short and simple, this story follows a young child as he picks out his first dog from the animal shelter and brings her home. It's an easy read with playful rhymes and colorful pictures. It is everything I need for when I sit down with a toddler in my lap, but older children can appreciate it too.

A little boy named Frankie goes with his papa to the pound to adopt a dog. Told in simple, rhyming text, he story is very straightforward - they go to the pound and choose a dog, bring it home and introduce it to their cat, they become a family. The illustrations are what really steals the show in this book. They are marvelous - bright and vivid and colorful with a diverse cast of characters. The dogs in the pound each have a name plate that tells their story, too; do NOT miss those!

This would make a decent group read aloud on an animal or pet theme. It makes an even better one on one read for kids who love dogs. Definitely recommended!

I don't have much to say about Amy Huntington's Frankie Gets a Doggie other than that it's a beautiful and heartfelt story that I loved. A large number of people have childhood experiences with pets, dogs being one of the more common. And that feeling of love these companions give us? Well, there's really no replacing it.

Frankie

The story doesn't have a lot of characters unless you count all the dogs at the shelter. In essence, this is a tale that begins with Frankie, his father, and their kitty. If you've taken even half a glance at this book's title, you already know where this story is headed. And it's probably one of the most authentic and heartwarming stories I've ever read.

So, many of us have experienced what it's like to get a dog. Frankie's journey to the avenue to pick out the perfect pup is a simple one we can relate to. Though, perhaps we can't all relate to knowing a dog who loves poetry (that one made me giggle). And so we spend a bit of time with the adorable artwork of Frankie and his father interacting with the dogs and the shelter worker.

But Wait, Doggie Still Has to Meet Kitty

Ugh, my heart. This is such an incredibly cute story. The rhyming, lyrical language was perfect throughout. As a reader with an emotional connection to the theme of this story, it's very easy to fall in love with it. You empathize so much with Frankie when he's interacting with his two pets. Honestly, I think this book achieves everything it sets out to.

The artwork was beautiful. I loved every single page, every illustration. The characters are all so expressive and energetic. You really feel the emotions right along with them. It probably helped, for me at least, that my fur baby has the exact same coloring as Frankie's Doggie.

Love

And I think that's really all there is to say. This is a beautiful book with a wonderfully emotional story. It's happy all the way through. I'd definitely say this is a great read for any kiddos who really love animals, dogs and cats in particular. I'm excited to see it out within the world and I hope it'll be on numerous shelves soon.

Thank you to the author, publisher, and NetGalley for the advanced readers copy in exchange for an honest review.

This book is really cute and I honestly have no complaints about it.

I loved that the father and son go to an animal shelter to adopt a dog. I think it would be a great idea to read this book to your child before you go and adopt an animal from a shelter. It would be a cute way to introduce it. I know that some schools do community projects and a lot of times animal shelters are one of the projects. You could use this book as an introduction to the project with those in preschool or kindergarten.

In addition to talking to children about animal shelters, you can use this book to talk about rhymes. The rhymes in this book include words that have the same ending but also those that have different endings but still sound the same so it has a variety that would be good for a lesson.

The pictures, while not my favorite style, were still cute. I did notice that the pictures only ever showed the son and father. Many picture books tend to forget that single-families exist, and while the illustrator and author might not have thought about it this way, I liked seeing a single father. There are plenty of single parents and I think it’s important all family types are represented in children’s books.

A simple book for younger readers.

What a lovely little story about Frankie adopting a dog and welcoming it into his family. I thought it was simple and sweet.

Satisfying and very cute rhyming narrative about a lad taken to the dog pound by his father on a mission to get a new member of the household – but who forgot the small matter of the cat's feelings about this? I liked the fact they featured a rescue/rehoming centre, and not a breeder, I liked the fact it portrays how different dogs can react differently to the same person, and I liked it for the warm heart it has – if it swung the other way and felt like overloading a kid with ideas of pestering a pet out of their parents I wouldn't have given this the time of day. But no, here the parent is in control, making all the decisions – but still giving the lad some chores when it comes to getting the pets to be friends.

This is a children's book that I read to my twin boys. I have to say I did not love this book because I did not think it was written well and I did not see the point of the book. I did like the pictures in this book. I receive an ARC of this book. This review is my own honest opinion about the book like all my reviews are.

What's not appealing about this book - the title, the illustrations (both on the cover and in the book), the story, the moral... Everything was super-duper adorable and melted my heart.
The book tells us of little Frankie who already owns a cat and is now looking for a dog from the animal shelter.
The story is told in rhymes, which seemed a bit forced at times but kids will definitely enjoy the verses.
What I especially loved was the decision to draw non-white characters in the illustrations (something much required in kids books) and the depiction of Frankie's closeness with his father, with no explanation whatsoever for the missing mother. Most children's books show a child and mother bonding. This could be a wonderful book to show the importance of fathers in parenting.
Recommended to all kiddies and pet lovers.
