Gone to Ground
[Blurb goes here]
This was an interesting read.
From the blurb, I was expecting all kind of creatures rising up from the depths of earth to wreak havoc onto unsuspecting characters. The author would have none of that.
This is a beautifully written detective story set on the nineteen twenties. That being said, the detection skills of the detective in charge of the case, could be describe as lazy at best. The crime is nothing but mundane: someone gets strangled in the garden of a mansion during a party. According to the prime suspect, however, someone witnessed the murder but the witness never comes forward. The detective unknowingly leaves most of the leg work to one of the guests at the party, a young woman.
Now, knowing the main theme of what's [the first of a new series of novellas based on cryptids of lore and legend], I can tell that the opportunity was truly wasted. While the cryptid is one of the main characters, there would be no change what-so-ever in the story if that character ended up being human and not a creature from myth.
As I said before, the story is beautifully written. As for the characters, they are interesting and enjoyable, unfortunately the plot was nothing if not derivative.
Still I think Gone to Ground deserves to be read. If for nothing else, for the way it's written.
Thank you for the advanced copy.
