This is the sixth in the Sixth Mah Jongg Mystery by Barbara Barrett and the second that I have read.
Playwright Marianne Putnam is happy that her play, one-act play “Jokers Wild,” is being produced locally. On opening night, the director, Jason Newhall, fails to show. Marianne and the director’s wife find him dead in his pool.
Jason expected perfection from the local amateur volunteers. He did not treat them well. It is no surprise that many are not weeping over his death.
This cozy allows non-policy personnel to trail along with local police during the investigation. Kat, Syd, Marianne and Micki, play Mah Jongg and solve mysteries. They are known as the sisterhood of sleuths. Their spouses team up with them to solve the mystery.
There is a slew of suspects and the ladies do a good job of sorting through them.
Looking forward to the next installment.
Marianne Putnam has been selected to have her one act play - Jokers Wild - produced at the community theater in Serendipity Springs, Florida. She's thrilled, well mostly, the biggest drawback is the creep who has been hired to direct the production. When the creep is a no-show for opening night, Marianne gets dragged into searching for him and discovers the body floating in the pool.
Now a suspect, she is sidelined while her 3 friends, Syd, Micki, and Kat are paired up with Sheriff department detectives to try and find the murderer. But is Marianne safe or will she find the murderer (or he find her) before law enforcement does?
Just love how these ladies (and their husbands at times) throw their retirement aside and work to find the truth, even if they don't like the victim.
The relationships of the different couples are entertaining and keeping the action moving. Looking forward to the next one!
Jokers Wild is the sixth installment in the Mah Jongg Mystery series set in Serendipity Springs and featuring the four Mah Jongg playing friends; Marianee, Amber, Micki and Kat. Marianne Putnam has had her one act play, Jokers Wild selected to be performed at the local community theatre and she's both excited and anxious.
Invited to sit in on the auditions and rehearsals, Marianne is less than impressed with abrasive director, Jason Newhall. Newhall is rude to everyone involved with the play and even delegates Marianne to sit in the back of the theater and keep her mouth shut. Despite the tense atmosphere rehearsals move forward and it's opening night - the only thing missing is Newhall. Worried about her husband's absence Mrs. Newhall begs Marianne to accompany her back to their house and there they discover Newhall dead in the family's swimming pool. Who killed the man and was Marianne just set up as a killer?
The ladies team up with their significant others, Sheriff Rick Formero and his deputies to raise the curtain on a murderer. A quick afternoon read and time well spent with a cast of Senior Citizens. This is the first book I've read in the series and while the mystery can certainly read as a stand alone I might have related to the characters better if I'd started from the beginning and new a little more about each of them and their relationships.
I received an advanced copy of Jokers Wild from NetGalley. While not required to write a review I am happy to offer my honest opinion.
Jokers Wild by Barbara Barrett, is the 6th book in Mah Jongg series. A fun group of seniors, Kat, Syd, Marianne and Micki, play Mah Jongg and solve mysteries. Marianne's play, Jokers Wild, gets chosen for the community theater in Serendipity Springs, Florida to perform. When the director that no one likes is found dead then the sleuthing begins. This book is a fun read, with intelligent older women. I found this book to be a quick read, with well developed plot and characters. I am looking forward to reading the next book in the series. If you love fun cozy mysteries like I do, than I recommend this book.
I received a complimentary copy of this book. Opinions expressed in this review are completely my own.
I had not read the previous books in this series but it will not be the last! I thoroughly enjoyed the characters, the mysteries and the style of Ms. Barrett's writing.
I liked that the factor that helps to unite the friends is that are members of the Mah Jongg Club. As it seems a bit more interesting than a bridge club for example.
Even though I hadn't read previous books, I thought the author did a great job providing just enough back story that I felt like I 'knew' the characters and the background to understand their relationships.
It was well-written and I loved the mystery! I can't wait to read more in this series!
Quick, witty fun. I love a cozy mystery and this didn’t disappoint. The books in this series are a quick read yet quite enjoyable.
Sweet cozy mystery. Marianne is excited that her one act play has been chosen. She has to deal with a jerk of a director who ends up being murdered. With the help of her friends she works with the detective to solve the crime. A lot of suspects to interview and lots of action happening.
