I was drawn to this cover and title in hopes of finding a character building book for children. The illustrations are beautiful watercolors and I appreciate the diverse cast of characters depicted through the book. The book begins with characteristics of a good leader, such as listening, finding a role model, and cooperating with others before providing examples of ways children can lead. While the language is simplistic, the use of clichés or colloquialism may lose children who haven’t yet learned the meanings of such statements. Additionally, I think the book falls short on engaging the reader on WHY they should become a reader. This book, in my opinion, falls into the familiar rut of being a book written by adults in their language rather than in language that speaks to the heart of a child.
