Other than being a bit gorier than most horror stories, Rebel Blood appears to tell a fairly conventional story about mutated creature zombie things -- zombie people, zombie rabbits, zombie birds -- that eat people. Most of the story is about fighting and killing and decapitation. The structure is a little less conventional. The story is filled with flashbacks to the days when Chuck, our hero, still had a wife and daughter. The ending is completely unconventional, a wild twist that undermines everything that precedes it, rife with ambiguity, leaving the reader to puzzle out exactly what happened. It's smart and surprising, and it redeems what I was ready to dismiss as another mundane zombie tale.
The art is suited to the story, with enough detail to make the action visceral while remaining sufficiently understated to keep the reader from vomiting.
