What an adorable book! I thought that this book is great to share with kids in the primary grades. Not really a book most kids would read on their own in my opinion, but definitely one that a parent or teacher could use to facilitate great discussions with.
This is a children's book that I read to my twin boys. I think this was a cute book, and it has some cute pictures. I just wanted more for the book, and I wish it pulled my boys a little bit more. I was kindly provided an e-copy of this book by the publisher (Princeton Architectural Press) or author (Elizabeth Yohlin Baill) via NetGalley, so I can give honest review about how I feel about this book. I want to send a big Thank you to them for that.
It is a very nice book for kids to see what colours can be other than on the colour wheel and a connection between them and the things around them.
I thought that this book was great and I liked the images and illustrations used too.
I liked how it got the reader to think more around colours in general and it was really interactive.
What do you feel when you see a colour, what do you link to that colour, what does it mean to you.
It is 4 stars from me for this one – highly recommended and a great way to get youngsters thinking and involved!
'What Can Colors Do' is a children's book that aims to use imagery to open up the world of color to children and to encourage them to reflect on what colors can do from emotions to color theory and everything inbetween.
Most of us knows that colors can be warm or cool. There's also primary and secondary. BUT do we know that colors can "POP!" ? We might not. Or how complex colors can be? I love colorful things: wear them, own them, even paint my nails in shocking colors. They gave me the courage to be myself. And so does the artist who draws or sculpt artworks. They created wonderful paintings or another art to speak to other people. Here's the book with a glimpse of that,
This book is a great introduction for kids to the world of colour. It provides a lot of great opportunity to interact with the book, to learn about art and colours, and even encourages children to use their imagination in other activities--including breathing techniques! This is definitely a great suggestion for a kids first book about colours, but sometimes the flow of the boom was a little bumpy for a storytime read.
Nice introduction to color theory, using art from the Philadelphia Museum of Art. Concepts introduced include hot/cold, primary vs secondary colors, and complementary colors. Doesn't go deep into any one thing, but I like it as an overview, and as a way to appreciate some great art.

What Can Colors Do?
by Liz Yohlin Baill
Back of the Book: “There's a rainbow of ways to think about colors. Colors pop and shine. Cool colors make us shiver, while warm colors heat us up. They can even express our moods, from feeling blue to being tickled pink. What Can Colors Do? introduces children to color through vibrant artworks that inspire curiosity, joy, and surprise in young learners.
Colorful paintings, sculptures, and objects from the Philadelphia Museum of Art help children think about how artists use color. How can colors express feelings? Can a color be loud or soft? As children learn the basics of color theory, from mixing to contrast and color wheels, they answer engaging, thoughtful questions that bring the world of art and their own experiences together. A series of activities for kids to complete on their own—from a scavenger hunt to a color-inspired way to meditate—helps them to appreciate the beauty and complexity of the hues around us.”
Impressions: This was a bright and colorful book that is perfect for preschool-aged children to help understand colors. I would have loved to see more examples of how colors mix and what the color wheel looks like in the book however this book gave a starting conversation as to how colors can affect us and why that makes art so special.
I received a copy of this book via NetGalley in exchange for my honest review shared here.
A concept book that goes beyond the introduction of colors and guides readers into the ways colors are combined to create not only art but feeling within the viewer. Complex ideas made simple, the author uses real artworks from the Philadelphia Museum to highlight and demonstrate the concepts of shading, primary colors, hues, and how art is made using many different techniques.
There are many ways to use this book, as a read-aloud for young kids, to teach for K-3 graders, and also, just a great book to have available in the classroom for curious learners.
A great addition to libraries building up their children's art collection or concept books.
Thank you to the Princeton Architectural Press and the author for an advance review copy. All opinions are my own and I was not paid for my review.
This would be a wonderful book for an Art teacher or a book that can be looked at during class time. It goes along with how different colors can be used, from warm to cold colors, to what's in the rainbow. I loved how they used real portraits and works that are famous and that you can see in museums. I would again recommend this book.
This book is great! It presents the different types of colour and how colours can be used for different effects, in a really interesting and engaging way. I particularly loved the use of real artwork throughout, to illustrate the points on each page.
What Can Colors Do by Elizabeth Yohlin Baill is a wonderful way to show the many ways colours are used.
Descriptions, feelings, emotions, and more! This book goes over the many ways we use colours and uses incredible pictures and illustrations to explain them. I think this is a marvellous way to educate kids about the way we use colours and words! I absolutely love this book and think it's a great resource (both for fun and technicality).
Four out of five stars.
Thank you to NetGalley and Princeton Architectural Press for providing me a free copy of this book in exchange of an honest review.
