Liza’s been in love with FBI Agent, Tom Hunter, since she was seventeen, but they’ve always been in the friend zone. Life happened, Tom got engaged and then lost his fiancée, and Liza enlisted in the Army as a medic, served and came home to start nursing school, but they’ve always stayed close. Obviously, this has been painful for Liza thinking her feelings were never reciprocated. Little does she know that Tom initially felt the same for her, but she was too young at the time, and as I said life happened. Now, seven years later they’re living in the same duplex. Their lives are very intertwined, living next to each other and by both being taken in by the Sokolov’s, a large, loving family in the middle of this Eden drama.
Eden is the cult Gideon and Mercy (last two books) escaped from, but not before suffering abuse at the hands of the leaders. They were somewhat safe before as the leaders thought both were dead, but the cat was let out of the bag and now no one is safe until Eden is brought down for good. I hated the men that ran Eden luring people into a supposedly simpler life to be closer to God, when they were nothing but charlatans and predators! Girls were forced to take a husband at twelve and viewed basically as property. The young boys didn’t fare much better and were subjected to sexual and/or physical abuse as well. And they had no problem killing anyone that defied them either.
In the last book Liza became close to the Sokolov family when she went undercover to question a suspect’s mother. Now she’s in the thick of it again when the killer here takes aim at Mercy and Liza’s quick thinking foils his plans. Tom’s not happy about her involvement, but he knows that Liza is more than capable of protecting herself having had combat experience in the Army. The danger also clarifies his deeper feelings for Liza. Life and death situations have a way of doing that! I love the unrequited-love-troupe and it was done well here. Tom and Liza’s romance was hot and sweet, full of longing. In the middle of all this chaos it was lovely!
Even though Say Goodbye is a long book, there’s never a dull moment and the only reason I didn’t end up finishing in one day is because real life got in the way! I wanted to hunker down and read through! The characters face danger at every turn, with DJ scheming to take out Mercy, Daisy or Gideon and willing to take out anyone willing to get in the way. There’s a lot of side plots and investigations at play and I was invested in every part! I’ve appreciated that in all these stories that the author didn’t write a TSTL heroine! Yes, they’re in danger, but in each case, they take the help offered, and try to prepare for all situations. However, DJ is relentless and doesn’t care about killing anyone to get what he wants. I have to say that there was a moment or two I felt bad for DJ, knowing the abuse he suffered, abuse that was allowed to happen by both of his fathers, and then he’d take away any pity by his actions.
I loved the Sacramento three story arc! It was thrilling and there was danger at every turn, but it was also a well-developed romance with amazing side characters! Say Goodbye seems to wrap up the Sacramento/Eden story arc, and while this is Tom and Liza’s story/romance I think it’s best to read Say You’re Sorry (book 22) and Say No More (book 24) before you read Say Goodbye (book 25). I read one book before in this long series, but it was only marginally connected and I don’t think you need to read any of the previous stories before Say You’re Sorry, the first in the Sacramento series to enjoy Say Goodbye. There was a book in between 22 and 24 (Into the Dark, book 23) that isn’t part of the Sacramento arc.
Special Agent Tom Hunter has been trying to take down the cult, Eden. He receives some strong clues as to where they might be and he calls on his friend Gideon and Mercy (former cult members and past characters from the series) to help him out. They each have a personal tie to the cult and destroying it from the inside out is the main goal.
You can never really go wrong with a book by Karen Rose. The thriller and twists are going to be there. Sprinkle in the romantic elements and you are bound to have a good reading evening in store. This book is no different. I stayed up all night reading Say Goodbye.
I liked that Tom and Liza’s romance is based off of a solid friendship. They never allowed things to become anything more until recently. When Liza puts herself in harm’s way, Tom is quick to respond. I like how they are the perfect balance for one another. While the romance is not as strong as some of her previous books, you get glimpses into the other couples from past books.
There is a lot of information in this book about Eden but you get a better understanding if you have read the previous books. They give you an idea of how sophisticated and dangerous Eden is really out. The flow and style are similar to previous books but there is a certain way the author throws in a twist that takes the story to the next level.
The ending to a wonderful series. I honestly couldn’t figure it out. The twists and turns kept me guessing. This is not the first series that I read with cults as the underlying theme. They are always hard for me to read but I enjoy the psychological aspect and the take down of the guy was just great!
If you are a fan of romantic suspense with a thrilling edge, then I recommend Say Goodbye. I can’t wait to see what Ms. Rose has next.

Say Goodbye is another chilling entry in the Sacramento series by Karen Rose. We are still dealing with this cult, and it is messed up!
Listen, I don't want to give anything away, but reading this is an experience. Rose does SUCH a great job of keeping you guessing, and it's twisty. Through it all is the slow building romance between Tom and Liza which helps break some of the bat crap crazy stuff going on. I think it is necessary to read the previous books to really understand the magnitude of Eden, and to understand some of the previous characters events regarding the cult. I love a good cult story and Rose delivers in spades. This place is so messed up and she really brings that to the readers.
In Say Goodbye, the romance is slow, but honestly, if it had been fast I would have never believed it. Dealing with the cult, a killer, finding people...if they jumped into romance right away while dealing with all that AND their own secrets it would have been ridiculous. I will say, I think the biggest drawback of Say Goodbye is its length. There were times it just FELT long. But, the story is gripping and the romance is believable!
What could have been better?
I didn’t love the main characters and it was a much slower burn than her previous two novels! I don’t think it packed the same punch as her other two in the series, which I loved.
What I enjoyed?
I love that there was an antagonist POV, it kept the plot moving!
I liked that everything felt very wrapped up at the end of the book.
I like how it focused on PTSD a bit, as well as the friends to lovers!
Overall, a good conclusion, a great series.
3.75/5 rounded to 4
Was I hooked by that book? Most definitely. It was thrilling and frustrating and satisfying. Another winner from one of my favourite authors.
Eden is still hiding and suppressing and abusing its members. FBI Special Agent Tom Hunter is on the forefront of the search for the cult. There is a breakthrough when one of Eden's newest members, Hailey, manages to send an email to her boyfriend on the outside.
Liza Barkley has loved Tom since the day she met him. They have been friends over the years, but now Liza wants more. Tom is forced to confront his feelings for her when she volunteers to go undercover as a nurse in an attempt to get close to Eden's enigmatic and elusive leader.
Say Goodbye brings us full circle in this series. This thrilling (I'll say it again) ride started with Tom's mother and her escape from her abusive husband. And it brings us around to the hunky, nerdy Tom as an adult. I enjoyed the little glimpses we got of Caroline and Max.
I loved Tom. He's super sassy, smart, and a little bit oblivious to some things around him. He is a dedicated agent and his biggest passion is bringing justice for his friends, Gideon and Mercy, who were victims of Eden themselves. Liza is a war hero. She is very loyal to her friends and to Tom. But her heartbreak is getting harder and harder to conceal.
I was listening to the song "I can't fight this feeling anymore," and I thought of Tom. It fits him to a tee. Tom and Liza were extremely frustrating and, I admit, at times it was hard to want to carry on after yet another failed communication between them.
I love Karen Rose and all her books. She creates villains that are complex and multi-faceted and oh, so evil. And this book had more than one that fit that bill. This entire series is well worth reading if you like romantic suspense. It is also worth it to start at the beginning. That way you won't miss anything.

📖 Q: what’s your current read?
If you like twisty, high speed romantic suspense with weighty emotion you might try Karen Rose, whose latest read Say Goodbye comes out today.
Say Goodbye is the culmination of the Sacramento series in which the respective MCs & plots have focused on finding Eden, a cult community which has long allowed the sexual assault of youths (sometimes under the guise of “marriage”) & used behind the scenes murder to maintain control over its members. You can jump in with this last book, although things might make more sense if you start at the beginning.
In Say Goodbye Special Agent Tom Hunter’s efforts to find Eden take on new urgency when a pregnant teen who’s been taken there against her will reaches out via email to her boyfriend. She’s going to deliver their baby soon & this, plus a series of violent, public attacks perpetrated by Eden members in an effort to keep a lid on their secrets, means that Tom & his fellow agents are running out of time.
His longtime friend Liza Barkley, a former army medic, is helping to look after some of the victims of Eden—now close friends—when she’s pulled further into solving Eden’s mystery whereabouts as well.
Add to that the attraction between Tom & Liza, an attraction that Tom resists as much & as long as possible since his former lover was murdered only one year ago. What he doesn’t know is that Liza has experienced her own loss.
This slow burn ultimately ends in that Happy Ending we romance lovers long for but it did occasionally frustrate me as it sometimes feels one-sided—Liza makes so much of her feelings apparent—& doesn’t always show Tom off in the best relationship light. But he is dealing with grief & the complicated emotions that come from moving on, & that comes across clearly in the book.
There’s so much detail in Rose’s mysteries & it was such a relief to finally see how it culminated. Thanks to Berkley Pub for the complimentary copy of this ARC. Let me know if you decide to check it out!
4 ⭐️. Out today!
CW: Be advised, there are many murders in this book as well as references to pedophilia & kidnapping.
This was a book that I ended up not finishing due to lack of interest in content. For that reason I was unable to rate more than one star.
I am a huge fan of Karen Rose and I've loved every books I've read from her but this book right here is going to be the one to beat. It almost felt like coming full circle to now get Tom Hunter's story after so many years and the little cameos we would see of him growing up. But at the same time this book never made me feel like we were going too far into the past and this was truly Tom and Liza's story on it's own. I actually really appreciated that this book stood on it's own and didn't bring back all of the things from the original books. If you're a new fan or haven't read those first few books from Ms. Rose, well first you definitely should go read them, but reading this first you won't even notice that there was a past with Tom and Liza that you could have read about.
This book also brings to an end the big-bad from the Sacramento books and it was such a rollercoaster ride getting to the end. So many suspenseful moments that had me gripping my kindle just dying to see what was going to happen. Even when I had my ideas on what I thought would happen next I was still surprised by things and I loved that about the book.
Between all of the mystery we still got a lot of Tom and Liza's friendship/relationship and I thought it was a really great blend of everything coming together. This will definitely be a re-read book for me and I'm already really excited to go back and read some of my favorites from Ms. Rose. Every time I read a new book from her it just makes me want to experience all of the books all over again.
*Thank you to NetGalley for an eARC of this in exchange for an honest review.*
This was a thrilling conclusion to this trilogy. I have never wanted justice for so many people before. I love the found family aspect, the banding together and the way everything cam about to bring down Eden. Tom and Liza had my heart right away and I was also on edge for all the loved ones I have met throughout the series.
This series is outside my normal comfort zone, but I am so happy I gave it a try and stretched myself to a new sub-genre of romance.
I highly recommend this author and I look forward to reading more of her work in the future.

I love the Romantic Suspense series. I've read them all. I started the series with the first Cincinnati book, with Faith and Deacon. It was actually #16 overall. Then I went back and read the previous 15 books. I would not jump into this in the middle of the series. One could start at the beginning of a city since those stories connect well, and they seem to be labelled on Goodreads.

Say Goodbye is the third Sacramento story. Say You're Sorry was the first Sacramento book and #22 in the series, followed by Say No More. Say You're Sorry featured Gideon, who escaped from a cult, paired him with Daisy, his sister Mercy, and his best friend Rafe, who is from a large family. Say No More was Rafe and Mercy's book. Mercy and Daisy are kidnapped by a serial killer. Gideon is an FBI agent. Rafe is a homicide detective.
I was correct that one focus of Say Goodbye would be Tom Hunter. Tom Hunter is a newer FBI agent came from Chicago and we know his family there. A "friend" from Chicago, Liza is coming to Sacramento to attend nursing school. They both have known loss and Tom was attracted to her when she was too young. He also worries he might act like his father who abused his mother and him. Tom bought a duplex where he lives in one side and Liza the other side.
The cult is still out there and after Mercy and Gideon. Gideon has been recused for being too close to the case. Tom is working the case from many angles and Liza turns out to be a surprising amount of help. There are many exciting plot layers and suspenseful because bad things happen to girls turning 12 in the cult or having babies without medical care. One cult member has lost himself to anger and revenge and greed and is on a killing spree of anyone who crosses him or has resources he wants.
The author has done an outstanding job in every way. The world is engaging and well-developed in each city. There are fun connections between cities like Tom Hunter coming from Chicago to work in Sacramento. The main characters tend to be in law enforcement, social work or therapy or foster care systems. They are upstanding caring people who usually have been through some horrific situations. Other characters are also well-developed. Children play a realistic role. The people are not perfect, which only makes them more believable. I really enjoy the times when they are smart and have good strategies, both good and bad guys. There aren't the obvious TSTL choices. The plot is the icing on the cake with several storylines, plenty of action and life or death suspense.
**This book has adult themes and trigger warnings of physical violence and sexual abuse**
What a freakin' story! I was on the edge of my seat the whole time! There's so much action and crazy moments that will have you completely enthralled in the book.
As mentioned above, there are some pretty heavy trigger warnings in the story, some scenes were tough to get through. What I also had a hard time getting through was Tom and Liza's page time together. These two have a long history of friendship and missed connections. Tom met Liza in his early twenties and Liza was only 17 and definitely off limits despite the intense chemistry the pair has. Time was just never on their side... until now. Feelings are a funny and fickle thing when it comes to love and friendship. That's all I'll say on that 😉
The Eden cult side of the story was intense and insane. More backstory is revealed about how Eden was started and I know many of my questions about the cult are answered. There are several adrenaline-juiced scenes where my heart was beating fast and I hoped and prayed for the good guys to win! Did they? You'll have to read it to find out!
Say Goodbye is an exciting and engaging read with a slow burn of suspense and desire as dual storylines battle it out for our attention. I enjoyed the story and I hope we aren't saying goodbye to this series for good.
Karen Rose is a heavy-hitter in the romantic suspense community. She's an imaginative storyteller, her character building is above par and her villians are nefarious and ingenious. Can't wait to find out what's next!
The ending made the book.
~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~
This book is a trip. I have to say I was frustrated throughout most of the story! It is another huge book. The author keeps us dangling throughout with twists and re-directs that made me a bit crazy! Not to mention Tom, who also was the most frustrating thing in this whole book!
One thing is certain and that is Rose does not shy away from violence and crime in this crazy escapade. The body count grows at a quick rate with this wacky group of deranged criminals. I seriously hated most of the people at Eden by the time everything came to a head.
On a good note, the budding feelings, and romance between Tom and Liza make a nice balance to the twists, crime scenes, and violence that comes with the territory called Eden. Even though Tom had me on edge for most of the story, the grand gesture and makeup were worth it all. Plus those heated scenes were perfect.
One issue I had was keeping track of all of the characters. I seriously got lost in there several times and really had to think about who was who. Especially with all of the name changes. Whew!
Loaded with drama, action, and intensity that winds you up, Say Goodbye offers the thrills to keep you on your toes, tempered with an awesome romance at the end. A great ending to this series… Well, I think it is the ending. I could be so wrong!!!
Final novel in Karen Rose’s Sacremento Trilogy. Rose takes reader’s on a high-paced, thrilling ride as FBI Special Agent Tom Hunter helps track the location of a crumbling cult and one of its rouge members that is hunting down those that escaped. Rose offers a large cast of characters that becomes overwhelming quickly, however, each is well-crafted and highly engaging. As the story progresses, and characterization develops, the plot smooths out. Rose brilliantly incorporates all the narrative’s moving parts, allowing the novel to read exceptionally well as a standalone. With the lingering inherent risk of life, the new chance at love, and the undeniable angst, Say Goodbye makes for an intense romantic suspense.
I don’t know what to say. You have Eden, a group of people living off the grid and following Pastor, the leader. They marry their girls off at twelve and take other women’s babies. Then there is DJ, a egomaniac, who is killing anyone who gets in his way. Gideon and Mercy, brother and sister that escaped from Eden, who everyone in Eden thought was dead. Tom is a FBI agent working the Eden case. Liza was a medic in the army and is now going to school to be a nurse. She has known Tom for seven years and have been best friends and has been in love with him that long. Tom has been blind to her feelings and she moves out of the duplex they share. Will Tom open his eyes to what they could be or lose her?
There were some parts that I couldn’t understand, it confused me. But this story grips you and doesn’t let go. Plenty of action and a little bit of sex. Friends to lovers. Crazy cult.
Say Goodbye by Karen Rose is the 3rd and final book in her Sacramento arc, which is the 25th book in her Romantic Suspense series. I am a big fan of Karen Rose, as her suspense thrillers are amazing, and unputdownable. In this third arc, Rose gives us another fabulous book that is once again 640 pages. Rose always creates fantastic heroes and secondary characters, as well as evil villains; and this does not change in this book, as she writes another masterpiece. Refresher: This arc revolves around a cult, Eden, who have been hidden for many years. The cult treats their women like slaves, and the young girls are forced to marry an elder (who have multiple brides) and have sex at the age of 12. The elders are all evil, and in Say Goodbye, Pastor and DJ Belmont take center stage, with Belmont being a horrific killer.
Say Goodbye was a tense, exciting, action filled story that kept me on the edge of to my seat from start to finish. I thought the previous two books in this arc was amazing, but Say Goodbye was even better. The nice thing about the Sacramento arc is that many of the characters from the previous books, play major parts in this one. Gideon (first book hero), his sister Mercy (second book heroine) work with all their friends to protect them, as well as a couple of others having escaped from Eden (Amos-Abilgail).
Tom and Liza are the leads in this story, with Gideon, Mercy, Rafe, Daisy, and the Sokolov family, and other FBI/Police friends working together to find DJ Belmont before he kidnaps or kills Mercy. I loved the entire big family vibe, as they were all great. Tom has been best friends with Liza since she was 17, and he was 20. Liza just returned from being injured (was in army), and is openly welcomed by the Sokolov family and friends, especially Daisy and Mercy. Liza has always had strong feelings for Tom, but though he has feelings for her, he is hesitant to move on, still grieving the murder of Tory and their unborn child.
What follows is an intriguing, tense, exciting, and edge of your seat suspense storyline that had me holding my breath so many times. This was very tense from all the way through, especially with the evil Belmont constantly threatening everyone around Mercy and Gideon. Pastor, who was sick in this book, was also evil, having started the cult, and hid all the money. As we raced to the wild climax, I prayed for the demise of the evil people and their cult. Tom was a good hero, though I did find him somewhat annoying, not being able to open himself truly to Liza. Liza was a fabulous heroine, who was willing to put herself in danger, to help find Eden and save her friends.
Say Goodbye is an intense thriller, with non- stop action all the way. As I have said before, Karen Rose never fails to give a fantastic well written thriller that is intense, always on the edge, with fantastic characters, evil villains and a wonderful couple you care for. If you love suspense, with a touch of romance and a thriller all the way, then look no further then Karen Rose.
The "Pastor" of a cult known as Eden has kept the cult hidden for decades, all while amassing millions of dollars. In additon to robbing his members blind, he also was quite illicit on a sexual nature. As of late, his surrogate son DJ has a different plan and he intends on taking the "Pastor" for everything he has.
Meanwhle, FBI Special Agent Tom Hunter is working along with former cult member, fellow FBI Special Agent Gideon Reynolds, and his sister Mercy, to bring the cult down once and for all. Liza Barkley is ex-Army and she joins the fight. Meanwhile she and Tom have been forging a romantic relationship, albeit several years in the making. Can this team of four do whatever it takes - no matter the danger - to find the location of the cult, save its members and bring it all to a close once and for all?
Meanwhile, the "Pastor" is seriously injured, thus giving DJ the chance to get ahold of the millions he is aware of. However, no matter how intense his efforts, DJ is thwarted every step of the way.
What a thrilling end to an exciting trilogy! I definitely have been recommending this compelling book to fellow readers to read this series in order. There is so much about this cult and what happened to people like Gideon and Mercy, as well as digging into some of the member's pasts, that this series should indeed be read in order.
One thing that Karen Rose does well in this series is to complete stories that started in the first book. One excellent example is that of Tom Hunter, and his connection with the cult. Also, Gideon and Mercy's past and reunion and how they are working so hard and so well together now. Each story also has a romantic element as well. I reviewed the first two books in this series, Say You're Sorry and Say Goodbye, here.
Many thanks to Berkley Books and to NetGalley for this ARC for review. This is my honest opinion.
A twisted and satisfying conclusion of the diabolical Eden cult! Karen Rose has pulled out all the stops with this third book in her Sacramento Series trilogy and left us with a demented weaving of terror mixed with a sweet happily ever after and a phenomenal group of family and friends that bring so much heart to this series. I loved every minute of this book and the entire series!
This trilogy began with an FBI agent dedicating his life to trying to track down the cult he escaped from as a teen to try to rescue his mother and sister and the rest of the innocents being terrorized by evil. His sister is eventually reconciled with him and lives her own cycle of recovery and commits to moving forward with life as they continue their search for the remaining cult.
This book brings the danger to a head as a new member of the cult manages to get word to a civilian of a vicinity where she's being held and the FBI jumps to chase the lead with a familiar face leading the charge. Tom Hunter will be familiar to Rose's early fans and gets his very own happily ever after in this book.
I highly recommend this book and the entire series to anyone who loves a dark and deadly twist to their romance with lots of thrilling moments leaving you guessing throughout.
My first Karen Rose read and I will be looking for more. This is the last book in a trilogy and I have not read the first two, so you do not need them to grasp the story. Intense, violent with a side of romance. I enjoyed this story so much. Grab this, it is well worth a visit.
Say Goodbye was a gripping and intense story that made for an absolutely epic conclusion to the Sacramento series. I loved the timeline and the different points of view as everything connected. I felt so pulled in and couldn’t wait to find out what would happen next. A truly thrilling read!
I loved learning about Liza and Tom and watching them dance around their feelings for each other. Tom was such a great guy with a huge heart. I loved learning about why he was holding back and about the internal battle he was fighting. Liza was a total badass, take-charge woman with a heart of gold. I loved learning about her secrets and all she'd endured while she served. I loved the push and pull between them as they held themselves back from their true feelings. There was a slow burn happening between these two but when they get to that moment where everything clicked… holy wow! All that longing and passion exploding was phenomenal.
I loved getting to see inside of Eden and learn about their dynamics and politics as well as the member's struggles and the internal conflicts they were facing. This author writes a fantastic bad guy so I really enjoyed getting to see into the mind of DJ Belmont and learn about all he’d endured in his youth. It was drama-filled, brutal, and intense. I loved it when he started to devolve and things started to fall apart as dots were connecting and the good guys were catching up.
There was an incredible cast of characters and I loved the different bonds and relationships happening. The Sokolov’s were awesome and I like the humor and support they brought. I liked seeing characters from the first two books and meeting new ones as well. I loved how the previous couples played a part in this story and I was incredibly happy that Mercy and Gideon got more closure with Eden as well.
This was my first series by Karen Rose and I was hooked the entire time. I thought this had the best, most dynamic build. The suspense element is dark and gritty with an intensity that leaves you holding your breath. In the midst of that, you get two beautiful souls healing from their past and moving on together and getting a wonderful HEA. Fantastic read!
Thank you so much to Berkley and NetGalley for providing me with this eARC in exchange for an honest review.
Man, I love these books and these characters. I have been reading Karen Rose since I was in junior high and have yet to be disappointed in any of them. She is so creative with her villains, and this Sacremento series based on a religious cult is no different.
Liza and Tom are two beloved characters from previous books (and our little Tom is all grown up now!), and I loved their story. It was definitely a friends-to-lovers romance, which can be hit or miss for me, but Karen Rose always manages to suck me into the story.
My only con, if you can truly call it that, is that this book seemed to focus a lot more on wrapping up the cult storyline from the previous two books than on their romance. I don't think the characters effectively managed to communicate with each other until about the 60% mark or so, which is definitely a change from most of her previous books. However, I understand this was to set everything in place for the finale, and since they already knew each other, it didn't feel like any true relationship development was missing. If that's the only reason you're reading this book, though, you might be disappointed in that.
Me? I was so invested in seeing the people from the cult brought down that I didn't have time to be disappointed. Karen Rose has been one of my favorite romantic suspense authors for years, and will definitely continue to be with her solid representation of so many types of people from all walks of life, her attention to detail in crafting her plots and villains, and her red-hot romances. I've been with a lot of these characters for half of my life, and it makes me so happy to see them happy. I can't wait to see what Karen Rose will do next.
