The Therapist by B.A. Paris was at the top of my wishlist for 2021 reads and it didn't disappoint. The characters were well developed and their reasoning behind their actions were well fleshed out and well explained. The story moved along nicely and kept you guessing until the end. There were many ways this could have ended but I was very satisfied with the twists, turns and surprise reveals that led us to the conclusion of the book. I love a well written book that can entertain while also building a solid story. 4.5 stars
International best seller B.A Paris returns with a new thriller about a house full of secrets and its neighbors full of even more. After a year of a long distance relationship, Leo and Alice move together to London in a beautiful gated community. Though reluctant to leave her countryside cottage, Alice is ready to make a new change for her future with Leo. The neighbors are all very kind and the home was even a great bargain for reasons unknown to Alice.
Alice begins to make friends with her neighbors and tries to find a new place for herself. After an unexpected visit from a private investigator, Alice finds out the last resident of the house was a therapist who was murdered. She comes to find out Leo kept this one important detail from her about their new home. A murder suicide occurred in the bedroom, explaining why the homes pricing was so low.
Alice finds out the victim is named Nina; the name of her late sister. She kicks Leo out of the house and becomes immersed with finding out the truth. Nina’s husband, Oliver, killed her and then killed himself or so that is how the story goes and what everyone is led to believe. She wonders if the neighbors know more than they’re letting on or if they even had anything to do with it.
As she decides if she should stay in the house and forgive Leo or to move away, she begins to slowly piece together information to figure out the truth of what really happened that night. Meanwhile, strange things begin happening in her home. She notices misplaced items, odd noises, and the feeling of being watched during the night. As things spin out of control, she is unsure if she can trust her new neighbors or even Leo. She turns to the private investigator, Thomas for help since her neighbors might be hiding something else from her too.
As the story progresses, new information is learned and Alice soon expects everyone around her as the possible killer. The readers are right there with her wondering who to trust or if anyone is even trustworthy. The plot twist will definitely come as a surprise and keep you flipping through the pages until the very end. This is a fast read and will be perfect for a beach read this summer. I’d like to thank St. Martins Press for an advanced copy of this book in exchange for an honest review.
When Leo buys a house in London and his girlfriend Alice moves in, it seems like they are on the verge of living happily ever after. Alice throws a party to get to know her neighbors, but when a stranger appears, her lovely future will be put in jeopardy. This house has seen tragedy and the prior owners' fates horrify Alice. Her obsession with finding out what really happened leads her down a path full of distrust. Satisfying her curiosity might also be the last thing she ever does.
The story is told mostly from Alice's POV, with random chapters by “the therapist”. At first, I was certain of the identity of the patient, but as more and more suspects were revealed, I was no longer so sure. I was right to doubt myself and I wound up only giving a passing glance to the “bad guy” and was quite surprised to see how everything came together.
Alice was a unique character. She is suffering from past trauma and her moving to London was a huge step. Once she puts on her investigator hat, she veers off in numerous directions. Every action by her partner and new neighbors raises her suspicions, and at one point, I thought, okay, they all did it!
An engaging plot that kept me flipping pages, and if I didn't read it during a rainy and cold Memorial Day weekend, I would have been happily devouring The Therapist at the beach.
Oh my goodness.
B.A. Paris is one of my favorites for reasons like this book.
This book will keep you guessing. Alice is so obsessed that she misses a few or 10 giant red flags. The characters are all so well thought out. They all play off each other and then you find out why. Holy crap!
This book was so twisty turny that I could barely keep up! I didn’t know which way was up and I loved it. Thanks so much to the publisher and NetGalley for my granting my wish for a free arc in exchange for my honest opinion! It was awesome!!
What is it about domestic thrillers that are so intriguing when you don't really know your partner or your friends? BA Paris has a specialty to cast up a small knit of characters and make you question every single one of them. This, coupled with her ability to set the tone in her books through imagery makes for a chilling read.
Even though the pace of this book moved slowly, it still felt pulse pounding and I found it difficult to put down - there were a lot of unknown factors and a classic whodunnit on hand. I liked that for this story, even though there was an alternating narrative between our MC and 'The Therapist', it mainly focused on her inner dialogue and her mind was racing similarly to what I would have done. The entertainment of her own theories was half the fun.
The twists were mid-level shocking until the end and I am happy to say there wasn't a vague/open-ended ends that seem to be trending nowadays. It was shocking and it was enough. This was a solid thriller.
Although, I will say the title is a bit misleading - ''The Therapist' concept is not flushed out to make it to title status for me.
This was a solid thriller and I'd recommend this for all BA Paris fans!
Thank you to St. Martin's Press and Netgalley for this gifted copy.
I enjoyed all the twists and turns throughout. I never figured it out— even the last chapter shocked me
Alice and Leo are moving. Into a newly redone home in the exclusive and gated community of The Circle. It seems perfect.
Alice sets out to meet her new neighbors but people are giving her odd looks. When she finds out that a woman was murdered in the house suddenly the price becomes understandable. The woman, Nina, was supposedly killed by her husband.
Alice lost her own sister, Nina, a while back and has her own secrets to hide about that. But she becomes more than obsessed with why her own husband didn’t tell her someone died here. The agent knew the neighbors knew, but for some reason, Alice seemed clueless.
Alice digs into this murder and is soon grilling the neighbors, who all have their own shady dealings going on and aren’t answering her questions.
I am a fan of this author. This main character though was hard to follow because she was just so clueless.
I’ll still read her next one though!

B.A. Paris is the author of Behind Closed Doors, one of the domestic thriller genre's defining classics. She is very, very talented. Unfortunately, The Therapist left me cold and disappointed! The premise is exciting -- a closed-door mystery of sorts, with a murder that takes place within a small gated community in London, investigated by one of its newest residents. The setting for an amazing thriller is there. But the character development is flat, the plot is repetitive and predictable, and except for one or two nuggets, I wasn't all that surprised by any of the reveals. Having said all this, Paris remains one of my top authors, and I will continue to read everything and anything that she publishes.
3/5 stars, will unfortunately not be recommending
If you are a fan of "the girl on the train", "the woman in the window" and suspenseful books, you will really enjoy this. I can honestly say that I did not see the ending coming and was surprised!
The Therapist by BA Paris was MUCH better than The Dilemma! She needs to stick with thrillers for sure! The entire time I was reading, it was hard to pinpoint where the twist was going to happen. I was pleased with the twists and turns, which kept me at the edge of my seat. I could pick up on some of her clues right away, but it still didn't give away the killer. Overall, it was better than most I've read lately, so it is worth the read! Thanks for letting me get the advance copy!
This novel will probably be very popular with fans of B.A. Paris. I, sadly, am not one of her fans. I keep trying to be, because I loved "Behind Closed Doors" Yet, I can officially say, I won't be reading anything else by Paris.
The Therapist is the story of Alice moving in with her love, Leo. They find a steal of a home on "The Circle." Alice is trying to befriend the homeowners in the close-knit community when she finds out a that a murder took place in her new home! She then decides to investigate the murder. The first half of the book are the mundane details of Alice's boring life. Snooze! My life is boring enough with a pandemic, thanks! Her conversations are repeated as she asks question after question about the therapist that was murdered in her home. Plot development lost me and unfortunately, I had to DNF. I try NOT to do that with ARCs, so my apologies.
This will not be recommended by me, unless of course, you are a Paris fan. Thank you very much to the publisher and netgalley for the ARC for my review.
She’s done it again. Guessing the whole number and what is going to happen next. A great read.. a group of people living in the same community and knowing secrets leads to a puzzling and exciting plot. You can try to figure out the friendships and who I telling the truth. But it all comes to a conclusion that will satisfy the reader.
Alice and her boyfriend, Leo move into a newly renovated house in an exclusive, gated community called The Circle. The house is everything they have dreamed of. When they host a party with all of their new neighbors, a strange man shows up, who Alice mistakes as one of the neighbors. When he shows up at her door again, Alice finds out that this man was not a neighbor, but a private investigator. He tells her that someone was murdered in their house and he’s investigating it.
Alice finds herself drawn into the investigation of the therapist, Nina who was murdered there. Alice becomes obsessed and can’t figure out why none of the neighbors wants to talk to her about it. Most say they just want to put it in the past, but Alice thinks they are all hiding something.
I really enjoyed this mystery especially the beginning. It was intriguing; fast paced, and held my interest. I did not want to put it down. I liked how difficult it was to figure out the neighbors in The Circle especially with all their secretiveness. Each one of them seemed to have a motive to murder Nina. The problem I had with this book was the last third of it. It was so hard to like Alice especially with her obsession with someone who was murdered that she never met. She put herself in danger throughout the book and made some awful decisions. There were times I just wanted to yell at her or shake some sense into her! For the most part, I did enjoy this book though. 3.5 stars rounded up to 4.
Thank you NetGalley and St. Martin’s Press for an advanced copy in exchange for my honest review.
First, the book was going well...the new house in the Circle and all the neighbours and their secrets was interesting...Even though I could not relate to Alice's obsession over Nina's murder, the storyline was captivating...Needless to say, who I had suspected as the whodunnit was wrong...Then things start happening and BOOM!!! you don't know what hit you...What an ending!!! I would have never suspected it! Great book, definitely will be recommending it to my friends!
Thanks NetGalley, St. Martin's Press, and BA Paris for the ARC!!
This is the first book I’ve ready by B. A. Paris and it was so good! It didn’t blow me out of the water though. I actually guessed the ending this morning before I picked it up to finish.
Regardless, it was still a delicious and fast read!
The Therapist is a murder mystery thriller about a new couple who move in together and buy a house in an exclusive neighbourhood and soon discover that their new home has a dark past. I was lucky to have access to both the ebook and the audiobook version of The Therapist, and I have to say they were both very engaging! I switched between reading and listening to the audio because I couldn't bear to stop reading it, and ended up finishing it in 1 day. The Therapist is a very suspenseful story where almost everyone has some suspicious qualities and I kept changing my mind about what really happened. Even the ending was quite shocking. Another great thriller from B.A Paris, who is now a must read for me!
3.5 stars.
Special thanks to St Martin’s Press and NetGalley for the early read!
Alice and her boyfriend Leo move in together in the idyllic, private community called the Circle. The Circle is filled with beautiful couples who are friendly and welcoming, however after Alice uncovers secrets Leo has kept from her regarding their perfect home, she begins to question everyone in the Circle - even Leo himself. Alice tries desperately to find out what really happened to the previous tenant Nina and bring justice to light. While a fascinating plot, I’m not really sure how I feel about this one. It had all of the makings of a perfect mystery/thriller but I feel like it had more chaos than smooth turbulence. There were no stones that were left unturned in the end, it just seemed like on every page the main character was pointing a finger in a different direction and making realizations that didn’t seem to fit in with what the story needed. The ending had a twist with layers so while it was somewhat predictable, there were still a lot of elements of surprise.
B.A. Paris does it again! Wow, oh wow! If you're looking for this year's page-turning psycho-thriller, The Therapist is it. I absolutely love Paris’s style, and just when I think there is no way she can out do herself, she does. This novel does not disappoint, and absolute must for your summer TBR list. A huge thank you to St Martin Press and NetGalley for an advance copy in exchange for an honest review. LOVE, LOVE, LOVED this book.
Thanks to the publisher and Netgalley for the copy of this in exchange for an honest review.
Alice and Leo move to a circle neighborhood where there is a tight knit community. Everyone knows everyone and their business. When Alice starts to get wind of something weird that happened in her house, she is on high alert. She becomes obsessed with finding out the truth.
I did enjoy this one but it is not as good as BA Paris' previous works. I didn't like that this turned into a mystery halfway through.
