I breezed through this novel. I thought the mystery was fine - I thought there would be more about therapy as a feature of the novel. It was really a domestic, neighborhood/community murder mystery. Not my favorite type of mystery, but I didn't guess the ending!
Thanks St. Martin’s Press and NetGalley for the advance copy. I typically like Paris’ books. This was the same. Alice and her boyfriend Leo move into a gated community in London, called The Circle. Alice finds out that a woman was murdered in her house. The woman’s name was Nina, and that just so happens to be the name of Alice’s dead sister. Of course, instead of translating books, Alice decides to play Nancy Drew. For anyone who has ever read a mystery, you already know that the person the author wants you to think is the culprit is NEVER the culprit. Same here. There aren’t too many surprises, but a couple to keep you interested. This will be a wonderful Summer read. Enjoy
This author is great for an unputdownable, question everyone kind of story. Of course, most of these kinds of thrillers could also be solved if the protagonist wasn't so self-involved or if people actually had real conversations with their friends/loved ones/spouses, but hey, then it would just be a boring family drama and less murdery (probably).
To start, I am a HUGE fan of this author and will continue to read all published works. The storytelling is always good. I did feel that the twist of this story was easy to figure out, but I still wanted to read to find out the ending. I always read these books quickly. 😊 Overall, an great, quick read- you end up being transported and immersed into the story.
"The Therapist" is a very good suspense novel. Alice and Leo have moved into The Circle, a gated estate with twelve homes in London. Alice wants to meet the neighbors, but Leo encourages her to wait and take it slowly. She soon discovers that the reason that Leo did not want her to become too friendly with the neighbors, and the reason that some of the neighbors behave somewhat awkwardly around her or have been making comments about her that she has happened to overhear, is that a year ago, the prior occupant of the house, Nina Maxwell, was murdered, and her husband, Oliver, was charged with the crime and then committed suicide. Leo had hidden this information from Alice, knowing that she would never agree to live in the house if she knew about the murder; especially since the victim shared the same name as Alice's sister, who died in a car accident, and Alice could become obsessive about women named Nina. The revelation of the house's history causes a rift between Alice and Leo, which only worsens when Alice is approached by a private investigator who says he represents Oliver's sister and does not believe that Oliver was the killer, suggesting that it was another resident in The Circle, and asking her to pass along any information she learns from the neighbors, some of whom also privately doubt Oliver's involvement.
The Circle is full of secrets and certain residents seem to know more than they should and more than they are telling. Leo and Alice also have some rather significant personal secrets. The author does a great job of keeping up the suspense and mystery. There are numerous things about the various residents of The Circle and their interactions, as well as the information that Alice learns about Nina and her interactions with her neighbors, that causes Alice to be suspicious of multiple neighbors. Her suspicion only intensifies when strange things start happening in the house. Interspersed throughout the story are old therapy sessions involving Nina; however, as she was a therapist and also seeing a therapist, it is unclear until near the end whether she is the therapist or the client in these interactions.
If you enjoy a good suspense novel, "The Therapist" is the book for you.
I received a copy of the e-book via NetGalley in exchange for a review.
I have read all of B A Paris’ book and have enjoyed them all.
This one had me on the edge of seat at various points throughout and had me guessing until the very end.
Intriguing from the beginning, Paris’ manages to weave a story that like the main character has you second guessing “who did it”. There is definitely some creepy moments that stayed with me but the major plot twist at the end was nothing but pure brilliance!
Alice pulls up roots from her small town to move to London into a home with boyfriend, Leo, where, unbeknownst to her, the previous woman of the house, Nina, was brutally murdered. The setting of this novel, a development called "The Circle" reminded me of the fake town in the movie The Truman Show. It didn't feel real, and neither did the neighbors living on "The Circle". The mystery of Nina's death is eventually solved in the less than convincing setting.
I will be posting a review to Goodreads and Instagram in a couple of days. This is my favorite BA Paris book so far, and I have loved them all.
After moving to the circle with Leo, Alice is desperate to become friends with the other couples on the street. Leaving her cottage and support system for London, and with Leo traveling all week, she just wants to have some friends. When she finds out the horrors that made her new home so cheap for them to buy, Alice starts to feel a connection to the woman that used to live there, Nina. Alice wants to find out what happened, but nobody is willing to talk about it.
So I gotta say I had a feeling with this one pretty early on, which rarely happens to me. However, I still loved following the story and trying to figure out what had actually happened to Nina, and why the entire circle was so hush hush about talking about it. I also just watched the circle on Netflix so the entire time I was just imaging all these people in their own little pods talking over circle chat! I really loved The Dilemma last year, so this one had a lot to live up to. It wasn’t as good as The Dilemma but I still really enjoyed it!
Ohhhh what a letdown. I really wanted this to be a winner. A slow burn with an odd ending that seemed out of left field. This could have gone in so many directions and the one in went in seemed to be the most dull.
I did like the setting of “The Circle” and could picture this small community in London so she set the scene quite well.
Unfortunately this is a miss for me.
Quite enjoyed this whodunnit thriller! I am a big B.A. Paris fan tho. I kept trying to figure out who did it, but I was thrown in so many directions I never got it until it was revealed. That’s a well written book in my opinion!
Another amazing novel by B.A. Paris. The Therapist has everything a good thriller should- amazing characters, twists and turns, and a dramatic ending. It was hard to put down and had me guessing until the very end.
Thank you, Net Galley, for an advanced copy of this book.
Ohhhh my creepiness! This was so good! B.A. Paris has done it again.
This one checks all the boxes that make me want to devour a book: creepy, murder, lies, strange neighbors, and a twist!
5 stars.
Thank you to the author, the publisher and Netgalley for my ARC in exchange for my honest review.
Look for this book July 13 and I promise you, it will pull you in and spit you out!
I think this is one of her best books. I liked her first books a lot and this one harkens back to them but fast paced tight plot and characters
I really enjoyed this book. The red herrings, and plot were nicely handled. Admittedly I thought I knew who the therapist was, but didn't realize all of the details and back story, so it was played out quite nicely.
lice and Leo had moved to a gated community into a newly renovated house, a place which would make it a home with their love. The neighbors too seemed to be a friendly lot, except one. A stranger, under an assumed identity, entered her home, and Alice got to know the truth. The earlier owner, Nina had been murdered there… in her home… She was The Therapist.
The Therapist is the first book I have read by B.A Paris. I enjoy her writing style a lot! Sometimes I was frustrated by Alice's behavior towards Leo. It was a bit of an exaggeration at times. Also, sometimes I was a little annoyed that she was so obsessed with making friends with her neighbors.
This book has some powerful plot twists and interesting characters, the behaviors were frustrating at times but overall an interesting book.
B.A. Paris does it again with this thriller- kept me on the edge of my seat throughout. A page turner that I couldn't put down.
B. A. Paris knows her stuff -- she knows how to write an engaging and excited novel, how to create dynamic and complex characters, and how to build a narrative until the very end only to keep a few surprises still up her sleeve. None of her novels ever disappoint and The Therapist is a solid mystery for sure.
I love BA Paris books so I of course loved this one! I wasn't able to pretend the "who done it" like us thriller fans usually can. I couldn't put this done until I found out who though.
I'm a big fan of B.A. Paris, although her last book didn't quite meet my expectations of her work. So, I wasn't sure what The Therapist would hold in store for me. Thankfully I really enjoyed this one. I love mystery/thrillers with ending I never saw coming. All the red herrings in this book have you thinking every one of Alice's neighbors could be the guilty party, or even her new partner Leo.
Alice and Leo move to The Circle, a gated community in the suburbs of London. Alice has always had a hard time making friends, but she decides to push herself to be friendly to everyone in The Circle. Unfortunately, she feels like her neighbors are talking about her behind her back, making her even more paranoid about moving into this new house and neighborhood. She tells lies and keeps secrets in the hopes of making new friends, but it may come back to bite her.
This one was a page-turner for me with a lot of twists right at the end. Poor Alice!
