B.A. Paris is one of my "go-to" authors as she never disappoints! This one was fabulous as we meet Alice and Leo who have just moved in together in a small community called The Circle where everyone knows their neighbors and there is tight security. But when Alice learns a woman was murdered in their house, things begin to get dicey as she realizes Leo knew but didn't tell her. What else is he hiding from her and what do the neighbors know that they aren't telling? Just like her others, Paris grabs you by the throat from the beginning and shakes you around like a rag doll until the very end, with twists and turns, and secrets that you can't uncover until she reveals the shocking conclusion. One of her best I believe!
Thanks to the publisher, St. Martin’s Press, the author and Netgalley for the advance reader edition of the book. Once again, B. A. Paris has produced a dark and twisty story of love, betrayal and unexpected endings. I did have a suspicion of how it might end, but wasn’t convinced until the last twist. I love that she can take seemingly ordinary flawed characters and make you root for them and want to help them solve the mystery. We follow Alice, who is moving in with her boyfriend Leo, to a supposedly secure gated community to start their life together in London. She’s leaving behind her hometown, but not the grief she feels over the loss of her parents and sister in an accident. The house that they are moving into has stories of its own which do nothing to settle Alice’s thoughts about her family. She can’t seem to hit her rhythm here until she finds a mystery to occupy her thoughts and energize her to be a hero to someone she doesn’t even know. This is good escapist fiction; the best kind to get into and get lost in. We have the mystery, the neighborhood dynamics, a newbie trying to make friends, a boyfriend who may have stories of his own and our main character who is trying to figure out her place in the world and make the best of what she’s been dealt. Great work B. A. Paris! #stmartinspress #baparis #mysterythriller #theTherapist
I really enjoyed this book. Character development was good. The plot was very interesting. Not a lot of typos.
"The Therapist" is an intriguing read. I'm giving it four stars.
B.A. Paris writes a suspense novel of the highest order. There are so many characters in this book that I never formulated a hard opinion of who villain really was. I was led to the conclusion, but then bombed by a BIG surprise. In retrospect, the clues were there . . . . I was just so engrossed in the various characters that I missed many of them,.
Another good B.A. Paris novel. Please keep 'em coming!
Wow--fabulous! Although suspense is the ultimate star of this book, I also loved the more mellow parts--the domestic dramas, evolving and crumbling friendships and romances, and the intriguing setting of a London gated community. The main character, Alice, is quite likable, with the first-person narration making her theories and fears more understandable as the reader gains insight into her thoughts and reasoning. By the end, you join Alice in being a little suspicious of almost everyone. When the truth comes out, it's very satisfying, with all the loose ends tied up and everything making sense. I actually would like to read this book again so I can fully appreciate how cleverly everything was set up. Highly recommended! Many thanks to the publisher and NetGalley for an e-ARC of this wonderful novel.
This one was kind of all over the place but not necessarily in a bad way. The pacing was great, I always just wanted to keep reading a little more & Alice’s suspicions were rather infectious. While not my favorite of this author’s books I did enjoy it overall & would recommend it to any fans of hers.
3.5-3.75 stars
I knew I would like this book, I didn't know just how much I would LOVE it. I love books that keep you guessing from start to finish! It didn't end the way I had thought it would.
When Alice and Leo move to an elite area known as " The Circle" its very clear that things are not what they seem. Alice is eager to form friends quickly yet feels torn and wonders if she should trust anyone there?
It's a fast paced thriller full of twists and turns, secrets and lies. Makes one ask themselves " How far will you go to pretend to be someone you are not" Can we ever fully trust anyone "
Enjoy this WILD ride, buckle up! You are going to LOVE this book!
B.A. Paris has done it again! This is the best book I have read so far this year. I love the writing style and the edge of your seat suspense that you can be sure to find in any of B.A. Paris’s books. I love books that keep you guessing, and this one really did.
B.A. Paris has a way of sucking you in right away. Her writing style is so good, giving you tension, and nervousness while trying to figure out what is really going on. I thought this book was excellent and I didn't figure it out until the main character Alice did. Highly recommended!!
OMG. B.A. Paris can do no wrong. I mean it y’all, every single one of her novels I usually finish in a day because I cannot stop reading them. The characters are fantastic and I am always surprised by the ending. This novel was stunning... loved the main character (she had so much depth) and truthfully I completely was at a loss for words at the end. She always ties up the endings with a perfect bow. MUST READ.
Alice and her partner, Leo, move into a London home in a gated community of twelve homes. Leo prefers privacy, but Alice, who works at home, wants to befriend her neighbors. She holds a party at which a man she believes is one of the neighbors attends and only she sees him. She later learns that Leo got the house for such a great price because a woman was murdered in it. Her husband was considered to have murdered her and then killed himself. Alice, who has the deaths of her parents and sister in an automobile accident twenty years earlier in her background, can’t handle this news. She begins to look into the murder and also Leo’s past history. I won’t go any further because of spoilers, but the plot is engrossing and will easily capture the reader’s attention. Thanks to Net Galley and St. Martin’s Press for an ARC for an honest review.
and her boyfriend Leo are starting a life together at the posh housing community The Circle. This gated community has more than a few secrets behinds its walls and as they start to unravel Alice wonders how well she knows anyone. Desperate for a friend and a confidant the dashing private investigator seems her only hope. Will he help her find the answers she needs or will she be left with more questions?! I love this authors books and as usual finished this one with in a day. My brain was as scattered as Alice’s constantly suspecting everyone and shocked by the surprise ending. A fun paced paced white knuckle read!
This book was boring and tedious. It was nothing but a string of conversations over wine, coffee, or dessert. The only action involved the main character bumping into her neighbors, inviting the neighbors for drinks, or calling her friends. The mystery itself fell flat, with little to no developments throughout the story. The main character was also super annoying and childish.
This was one of those books that hooked me from the start, and kept me turning pages to find out what would happen in the end. You get just enough information to start to form an idea of what’s going on, but then the next bit of info contradicts your theory, and you have to start over. I find books that can do that well, like this one, a real pleasure to read. Thank you to Netgalley and the publisher for providing this ARC in exchange for an honest review.
The amount of excitement I had when I saw that B.A Paris had came out with a new book, I completely stopped the book I was about halfway into and immediately knocked this book out in a day.
Alice and Leo are a long distance couple who decide they need to make the step of moving in together, Leo has found this beautiful house in a gated community called The Circle which has a tight knit group of neighbors. Alice has a cocktail party to introduce themselves to the new neighbors and an unexpected visitor shows up to tell her that the dream home her boyfriend bought was actually a home where a murder of a woman named Nina took place, Alice is trying to dig up what happened to Nina becoming completely obsessed and honestly doesn't know who to trust... within her research she also finds that her boyfriend isn't who he claims to be. Who can Alice trust?
Thankyou NetGalley and Harper Collins for this early release.
This was a suspenseful, fast-paced book from beginning to end. Alice and Leo get a great deal on a wonderful house in a gated community. Unbeknownst to Alice, there was a brutal murder and subsequent suicide of a married couple in the house eighteen months prior. Alice doesn't want to stay in the house but has rented out her previous property and can't return until the lease has run out so she decides to make the most of her time by getting to know her neighbors and finding out what she can about the previous occupants. This stirs up controversy between the neighbors, and Alice and Leo's relationship is becoming strained. Meanwhile, unusual things are happening in the house. It's almost like someone is sneaking in and leaving little clues to behind to let Alice know they've been there.
Here's where the book dropped a star for me. If at any point I thought for a second that someone was coming in my house on a regular basis, a house where someone was murdered, and certainly if I had the means as Alice clearly does, I would not stay in the house, at least without some protection. I would get an alarm system. I would get a large dog. I would move out and stay with friends. I would contact the police. I would do any of these things but Alice does not. In fact, she talks herself out of doing any and all of these things. So while I enjoyed the book, I did find myself getting quite frustrated with Alice, who was an otherwise likeable character.
This book had what, and I do not say this lightly, may have been the silliest premise I've ever encountered. Further, everyone acts as though the narrator is a fully functioning adult, but, having read her thoughts, I'm quite certain she could never exist outside of an assisted living senario.
It definitely was a page-turner, which I always expect from this author, and it didn’t disappoint. I struggled a little with the main character, Alice, being so indecisive and weak but once I knew her full background story it made sense. If someone is looking for a thriller with a good little twist, I will always recommend any book of B.A. Paris.
This book was just ok for me. There was a lot of back and forth with all the characters but nothing that truly played out in an interesting way. It wasn't until the last 10% that the dark and twisty details emerged, and even then, I felt like it was randomly thrown out of nowhere. I wasn't impressed at all with the whodunnit or the why behind it. As others have stated (and I agree), this author started off strong with her first two books and has been sliding downhill with the last three.
I love B.A. Paris! Her books always suck me in from the get-go and I buzz right through them. The Therapist is a domestic thriller with just a touch of the supernatural thrown in to keep you on your toes.
Alice and Leo have bought a new home in an exclusive gated neighbourhood. The home is beautiful but something seems off to Alice, perhaps it's because the neighbours are all so close to each other, it's a bit more difficult to "earn her spot" within "The Circle". When Alice accidentally finds out the history of the home, it all makes sense...but does it really? Is it all a bit too convenient?
I fought back and forth with myself trying to figure out who the villain was while reading and I changed my mind about 12 times, and that's exactly how I like my thrillers! I really enjoyed this book - 4 stars..
Thank you to Netgalley and @StMartinsPress for an advanced reader's copy of The Therapist BY B.A. Paris.
