I really enjoy Danielle Steele's books and like it as a quick read in between other reads. I had a hard time with this one even though the story was similar to her old writing. Thank you Netgalley and Random House Publishing Group - Ballantine for this ARC but all thoughts are my own.
Gave this book a four because I didn’t think it was as great as usual. Still good, but not the best of Danielle Steele.
I'm having a hard time with the rating of this book. I'm honestly not sure how I feel about it, and that doesn't happen often. Complications begins with the grand reopening of a famous hotel in Paris. We begin to learn about different people and are following multiple stories throughout the book. I liked the idea that some of these smaller "complications" and stories have connections to others. However, through most of the book, I felt like they were all just multiple smaller stories that didn't mesh well together. It was like reading multiple books at one time...and I found it to be frustrating at times. I also didn't love the themes of, what I would consider, the main storyline for the first half of the book. There were aspects of this that I enjoyed (the drama, SOME of the people, etc.) but I don't think that Danielle Steel did justice in the way that she could have.
I love Ms Danielle. Her books are always superbly written. I can always get lost in the pages when I open her books. She never let's me down. Grossly entertaing. Well written.
“Complications “ was a poor excuse to relive the success of “Neighbors.” With a group of strangers placed into a common situation, the reader is supposed to follow the complications life has to throw at is. A newly renovated hotel in Paris serves as the backdrop of a series of fantastical occurrences that stretches reality way too far. The politician having a steamy love affair might as well not have even been in the book. No one cared, he didn't add to the story, he only served to add chapters that no one wants to read. By the way, the word “important” is used over 40 times, only half of which were necessary. Knowing this from the start should have warned me, but I was reading this for the purpose of a review, so I plodded on. On the bright side, the book is a quick read, but I would recommend skipping it and reading “Finding Ashley” instead.
This book is an absolute 10!!!! I am an avid reader of Danielle Steel's books, but this one had my attention immediately. Most books take a few few chapters to really get into, but not this one. There were so many twist and turns. The perfect couple meets by pure coincidence due to a tragic event. They are then handed many obstacles to overcome. There is love, murder, deception, and betrayal that is out if everyone's control. You do not know until the end if they are going to be together or not.
When the Hotel Louis XVI in Paris opens back up after renovations, everyone, old and new, are uneasy about how things are going to go. Not only has the hotel undergone renovations, but they also lost their long time manager of the hotel. Olivier Bateau, the new manager and Yvonne Philippe, the new assistant manager, could never have known what was in store for them. Are they up for the challenge that they are about to face with the opening of the hotel?
This book takes place in Paris, London and New York. There are two main characters, Alaistair Whyte-Jones, an Englishman and Gabrielle Gates, an American art consultant. Gabrielle has just gone through a divorce that was public and made her feel unwanted at first but then she realized what was going on with her ex-husband and got over it real quick. When Gabrielle goes to Paris, she wants to stay in the same hotel that she usually did with her ex-husband because of the hotel, not because it was a place that brought back his memories. Before checking into the hotel, none of the characters know each other, but they soon meet and form bonds that are unlike any other.
I love how Danielle Steel takes the characters and makes you feel woven into their everyday lives. She has always had a knack for doing this and leaving you longing for more from then when the story ends. There is no other writer for me that can do this.
The way that Gabrielle and Alaistair connect through the story is so sweet. They are really both responsible for saving each others life through all of the complications that come their way. I don't want to give away too much because I know you will enjoy reading this book as much as I did.
I voluntarily read and reviewed this book and all opinions are my own. Thanks to Netgalley, the author and the publisher for an advanced copy of this book.
I thoroughly enjoyed Complications. I read the entire book in one sitting! The story follows several couples visiting a hotel in Paris that recently renovated and reopened. When stories are based out of the US, I can become disconnected, because I can’t visualise the setting. Once I moved past the hotel history and description, I fell in love with the characters. Each story line was more engaging. I was engrossed chapter after chapter and I was left with a huge book hangover. A great read!
It all starts with the new renovated motel. All parties are getting away from a marriage, secret trysts, sickness. It’s here that all parties become friends. Some find a new beginning and others find love. Thoroughly enjoyed this book.
Danielle Steel, Jackie Collins and the sweet valley high series are all books that got me into reading. Every once in a while I get nostalgic and lick up a Danielle Steel book. This was a very interesting book with complicated characters ( as the title states). I totally thought I had the book figured out in the first few pages but I did not. I went in directions I did not anticipate which I liked.
I liked all the characters good and bad. I loved all the places they went ans was able to picture them there. I highly redone the this book.
Traveling back and forth between Paris, New York and London you never know the people and happenings going on around you how they will impact your life. The ships passing in the night might be worth looking into as they can change your life when you least expect it. This book talked a lot about interesting things and shopping areas in Paris that I hope to visit.
I didn't feel like this was one of the author's best books. I normally like most of Ms. Steele's stories but this one not so much. I didn't care for the most of the characters and it didn't hold my interest. Pass on this one.
I enjoyed the book. It involved an interesting group of people. It was sad at the beginning but changed with the miracles of science, love and the miracles of God. Once I got into the book I didn’t want to stop reading it. I would recommend this book to others. Another good and interesting Danielle Steel book being published this year.
This book was kind of boring not much stories to keep the reader interested. I was disappointed with lack of spirit the characters show and some details tended to drag on and I didn’t want to finish the book
Steel's latest centers around a luxurious boutique hotel, the Hotel Louis XVI, and the guests who walk its corridors. This is an ensemble story, about the many characters who spend the night at the hotel after its reopening. One of the characters is a French politician with his eye on the presidency--but when he kills his gay lover at the Hotel Louis XVI, his chances for political office fall apart. Another storyline focuses on a man contemplating suicide after he's diagnosed with leukemia--but his love affair with a strong woman brings him back from the bring. Other storylines include a bomb scare, a destructive rock star, and a heart attack drama.
Overall, the novel was entertaining and kept me reading even though I knew everything would turn out okay in the end. This is a short, quick read, perfect for a relaxing day on the beach. It's not particularly profound, but then, Steel's novels are rarely great literature. What she lacks in literary prowess, she makes up for in her storytelling instincts.
Thank you to NetGalley and the publisher for providing me with an advanced reader's copy in exchange for an honest review.
The Hotel Louis XVI renovations is complete and the grand opening as begun. The former manager has died during the renovations and Olivier Bateau has taken his place. Complications start happening quickly. At first, I am thinking that the story will be about Olivier until his assistant Yvonne Philippe comes in and I began to think that she is the main character but those changes with each guest that arrives. Then the complications begin with one complication leading to the next and the next one leading to the next. It felt like the sinking of the Titanic all over again. For a minute, I was struggling to keep up. I wanted to know now what was going on with Patrick Martin and the story would switch to Alaistair. I would then get interested in Richard and Judythe and it would change to Gabrielle. Then all of a sudden very little is said about Richard and Judythe and Patrick and the story becomes all about Gabrielle and Alaistair. Then Yvonne pops back up and Olivier continues to sink like the captain of the Titanic while she tries to get back the Hotel Louis XVI back on course. I did question how Patrick could possibly be the future president of France and make so many dumb choices but then I thought about our politicians and figure that every country has issues.
Thank you Danielle Steel, Random House Publishing Group Ballantine and NetGalley for allowing me an advance copy for my honest feedback.
The backdrop is the exclusive Louis XVI hotel in Paris. The hotel is reopening with a new manager after renovations. The stories are a young couple who the man has a heart attack, a minister of Interior who is having a sordid affair, a doctor that only has a few months to live and. a recent divorcee getting her life back together. There lives and stories all intersect at the hotel.. Life is filled with complications for each of the characters.
Danielle Steel’s books are filled with excitement ,romance.
She never tires of writing this must be her love since she never stops.
I must have read a lot of her books and constantly look for more
I really enjoyed this book. I loved the protagonist, and the character development kept me hooked. The beginning was a bit slow, but it quickly picked up. This was my first book by Danielle Steel, and I will look forward to reading more in the future.
This book follows guests of the recently renovated Louis XVI hotel in Paris. Excellent story telling with a few twists thrown in to make it interesting. Secrets and drama abound.
