Let's face it up front - Lou makes some bad decisions in this engaging novel set in WWII England. She's moved from Devon to Plymouth, where she's working for the Canadians. And then she falls in with a bad guy, who she only sees for romance not the fact that he's using her. There isn't a lot of WWII atmospherics as this is more a tale of a young woman who discovers something about herself and then recognizes who is right for her. Thanks to netgalley for the ARC. A good read.
An enjoyable book to read. A young girl moves away from home to work. She gets involved with Harry who is up to no good. The story is easy to understand and follow. Lou is at times naive but she has hidden strengths. I would recommend this book to be read.
A very naive 21 year old leaves her sheltered Devon home to work in Plymouth at the Canadian Naval Depot there. She lodges with other girls working in the Depot and certainly quickly learns how to spread her wings with fun, dancing, heartbreak and disaster. The chosen boyfriend is the sort all mothers hate, with good reason, but she has to learn. Black marketeering is his game and some. The Canadian Lieutenant "nice boy" boss comes to her rescue when she's accused of theft and there is a happy ending. The characters are rather stereotypical and I would have liked a bit more war-time atmosphere but it's a satisfactory romance for a quick read. Thanks to NetGalley and Canelo for an advance copy in exchange for my honest review.
Louise Channer, a twenty-one-year-old native of Devon, England, longs to find a job and do her bit for the 1940 war effort. After finally convincing her parents, Louise (Lou) applies for a clerical job in Plymouth. As the plot unfolds in this coming-of-age story, Lou makes friends, settles in at her job, and starts dating. Readers might find themselves tempted to shout at times, ”No! Stop! Do NOT go out with that guy! He’s a cad!” However, Lou has to learn these things for herself, so readers experience one drama after another, which is a bit maddening. For fans of World War 2 historical fiction, this novel might seem a bit too predictable. On the positive side, it’s a feel-good tale with a satisfying ending, however frustrating the path to that ending might be. The conflict is what keeps the reader going.
Sometimes it's the smallest decisions that can change your life forever–Keri Russell.
How true isn’t it! One of the toughest battles in our lives is to make the right choice. Or else live with the choice, irrespective of the outcome.
This is precisely the situation of Louise Channer or Lou. Aged 21 and still living with her parents and siblings in Devon, she finds life at home to be drab and lifeless. A job at Canadian Nave Depot opens new and exciting doors for her.
At every stage of her life, Lou grapples with choices, sometimes regretting her decisions, and sometimes glad with her choice.
Her Heart's Choice is a breezy, well-paced romance with an emotionally satisfying and optimistic ending.
