Thank you to Net Galley, Gallery Books and Robyn Harding for the ARC
The Adler family of Portland, Oregon, Viv, Thomas and their children Eli and Tarryn, are confused about why their home continues to be vandalized. Each family member has secrets and issues, and they all wonder if they are to blame for the increasing vandalism.
Towards the end of the book it seems that the reasons for the vandalism have been resolved. But has the matter really been resolved?
3.5 out of 5 stars
We all know that there's no such thing as a perfect family or dare I say a perfect book. This book was far from perfect but it was adequately entertaining and a nice, light read for an afternoon.
Thank you to NetGalley and Simon & Schuster for providing a digital copy in return for an honest, unbiased review.
This book was sort of weird but entertaining, every member of this family has theirs on motivations and secrets that somehow create a cascade of consequences for their family in which they have to lear how to overcome it and relate to one an other again.
Ooh, this is an addictive read. A family where each member has their own issue going on and is trying to hide. The author had me reeled in from the start. A gripping read with a lot of drama and entertainment,
Thomas and Viv Adler, along with their two teenaged children, appear to be the ideal family, living a picture perfect, flawless life. After a seemingly isolated prank escalates into more alarming incidents, it becomes clear that at least one person isn’t fond of the Adlers! Each member of the family is harbouring a dangerous secret, one of which could be the reason behind the disturbing attacks.
Wow, this is quite a book! Robyn Harding is a stupendous writer, this was such a fast-paced, compelling read, extremely clever and fun. The story is told from the alternating viewpoints of each member of this crazy dysfunctional family, and I couldn’t get enough. The suspense builds as more revelations are uncovered. There are many twisty-turns throughout and the author kept me guessing every step of the way. Highly recommended!
Another amazing book from one of my favourite authors. This is a story about a family with a lot of problems! There are having their house egged, and an attempt to burn it down - with them inside. As these incidents escalate they try and figure out which family member has enemies. The problem is they are all candidates for causing the problem. This is a book I tore through. Each family member was interesting and the pacing and plot were great. Make sure you add this to your TBR!
A definite 5⭐️ for me!!
The Perfect Family is a wild ride filled with secrets and suspense. With short chapters you’re going to find yourself going “just one more…” I couldn’t put this down and was left guessing and constantly changing my suspicions. If you’re looking for something to get lost in this is it, you won’t put it down.
This was my first book by Robyn Harding and the suspense was there for me. I will admit to enjoying the majority of the book over the ending but all in all this was a good family drama read. I am drawn to multiple POVs where as the reader you continue to learn more and piece things together bit by bit. It is like you hold the secrets waiting for them all to combine. As you continue through the novel the Adler’s secrets slowly reveal and connections are made. Like I said I was disappointed in the ending and how things seemed to be a little far fetched for me. I did enjoy this and will totally be grabbing more from Robyn’s back list.
Thank you to Netgalley and Simon & Schuster Canada for the advanced copy in exchange for my honest review.
This book was a perfect vacation read: fast, fun, twisty, solid, well-written. A stand-out in the genre, Robyn keeps writing solid wins. It keeps you turning pages, what more do you need?
This is one awesomely captivating and addictive read! I was pulled in immediately and practically inhaled it in one sitting, I could not put this down. This is a great thriller that just keeps getting twistier and twistier, and weaves in just enough creepiness to make you catch your breath. This really is a very satisfying read from the first page to the last.
Family drama at its best! From being a massive Robyn Harding it is hard to steer me wrong and this one definitely did not.! This is one great thriller with secrets that just coming out one after another. Who knows what everyone in your family is secretly hiding from you. If you need a quick and quite gripping read, please pick this one up!
Thank you Netgalley and the publisher for an advanced copy of this book in exchange for an honest review. This was a really cool read. I quite enjoy this author's work. This was no exception. This kept me hooked throughout the entire story.
The Perfect Family was a quick read. I enjoy reading about unlikeable characters because they usually are leading dramatic lives. However, I was bored reading about these characters. I did enjoy getting the different points of view because that added a different dimension to the characters. If I didn't have multiple points of view, I would have DNF the book. I finished the book not too long ago and I already forgot the ending. It did not leave a lasting impression. I will read more books by this author.
As much as I love Robyn's other novels, this one was a quick, fast-paced read but it was missing the depth, the thrill and the suspense of a great thriller - which left me wanting more and a bit flat once I flipped the last page. If you would've told me this was a beach read - I think that would've been a better description and less hype about the (lack of) suspence and thrill. I will say this, the writing was intriguing and kept me captivated. The short chapters were my fav. And lastly - yet unfortunately - the characters were not relatable at all for me.
A huge thank you to NetGalley, Robyn Harding and Gallery Books for providing me with a copy of this publication, which allows me to provide you with an unbiased review.
This was the most dysfunctional family I have ever read about. Super enjoyable though- I was hooked. And the ending left so much up in the air!
This was the first book that I’ve read by Robyn Harding, and I know it won’t be the last. he Perfect Family was a quick read for me, and it had me hooked from the very first page. I wanted to know who was targeting the Adler family, and why Viv, Thomas, Tarryn, and Eli are hiding secrets from each other. This family, especially Viv and Thomas, wants to portray that they are the ‘perfect’ family to the outside world, but they are crumbling and far from perfect.
The characters were complex and dynamic; each chapter was from the perspective of a different family member, which worked really well and added so much to the story. I’m normally wary of multiple POVs, but I think having each family member added to the story, so that the reader can get a better understanding of how the family dynamic works. I don’t know how this novel would work without all four POVs included.
There wasn’t an abundance of tense moments in this novel, it didn’t leave me breathless after every chapter like some thrillers, but this was an incredibly enjoyable novel. It really is a domestic thriller centered on the Adler family, and it had me invested in the family.
3.5/5
In short;
-I was immediately gripped in with that prologue
-But it got a little slow after the beginning bit
-Lots of suspense and not as much actual action
-Their secrets weren’t as dark as I had expected and though the characters weren’t likable, it was still an enjoyable story.
The Adler family, consisting of parents Thomas and Viv, son Eli and daughter Tarryn, both teenagers, live in a beautiful home in an affluent neighbourhood in Portland. They present a perfect family facade but everyone has secrets and they really don't communicate well. Harassment, mostly in the form of property damage, starts to occur and gradually escalates while each person tries to determine whether it's because of the secret they're keeping.
I enjoyed this novel, my first by Robyn Harding, and loved the short snappy chapters and crisp writing. The story is told in alternating chapters from each family member's viewpoint and was very easy to read. The resolution was quite a surprise and the ending was satisfying but, like my friend Pat said, the last sentence was totally unnecessary. Maybe there's a Book 2 coming but I didn't like it. 3.5 Stars rounded up to 4!
My thanks to Simon & Schuster Canada via Netgalley for the opportunity to read an ARC of this book. My apologies for the late review.
I thought the perfect family had a lot of interesting twists and turns. I loved the idea that behind each family member were lies and secrets just dying to be unravelled. I thought with all of the build up the ending was a little anticlimactic and a bit unrealistic. I do wish that the family had been brought closer together or at least learned something individually from all of the lies and secrets but it didn't appear they did.
Robyn Harding is a brilliant suspense novelist. I can never tell where her books are going to go, despite my best efforts and trying to predict. The Perfect Family was no exception and I devoured it in one sitting. So intense! what a page turner!
