I thoroughly enjoyed this read and loved the opportunity to be a fly on the wall – getting a glimpse of the inner workings of a seemingly perfect family. I mean what a joke, right? We all have those people we look at and feel like they have it together or their life/family seems picture-esq. Is it ever? That’s a hard no. Even the most loving, supportive families have stuff – because a family is made-up of individual people and no one is perfect.
I mean, I spend 23.5 hours a day trying to keep our lives together and we are always one step away from the wagon wheels falling off over here.
So to read this book is an enjoyable / cringe worthy opportunity to see what goes on behind one family’s luxury front door. And as the reader, you’re not the only one who knows that things are not all cucumber water and well-shined shoes. Because someone knows that the Adlers are coming apart at the seams. Someone knows and is putting a spotlight on the Adlers through a series acts that create nightly terror (eggs, tire slashing). Each Adler thinks that they are the target. Each growing more and more uncomfortable as the acts continue to escalate.
If you like a who-dun-it book but without the murder/gore aspect, this is a quick compulsive read. Ideal to consume by a lake / pool / ocean because you can pick it up and put it down without needing to circle back to figure out what is going on.
Easy, digestible and entertaining.
It’s slotted to be released on August 10, 2021, but you can pre-order now 😊
Robyn is a masterful suspense/thriller writer.
I guessed a half a dozen times who was behind terrorizing this family and I was wrong every time! So we’ll written, full of unexpected twists and turns that had me reading well into the wee hours of the morning because I literally could not rest until I knew who the ‘bad guy’ was!
Another great piece from Robyn Harding!
This book was just WOW! This is the book I have been waiting for Robyn Harding to write. I’ve read a couple of her other books and while I did enjoy them it always felt like something was missing. This is not the case with The Perfect Family! Robyn put her foot on the gas in chapter one and kept it there through the whole book. One of the things I like best about her writing is that somehow she manages to write stories I love that are filled with characters I hate. Normally if I am faced with having to read a book filled with unlikeable people I will just DNF it but Robyn Harding’s writing keeps me flipping the pages until the very end.
Normally, this would have been a five-star read for me, but a couple of small things held me back from giving the hot mess that is the Adler family a perfect score. The copy I read was an advanced copy from Netgalley so hopefully the inconsistency I noticed with Eli Adler’s age descriptions will be fixed. I was paying closer attention than usual to details in an attempt to figure out who was terrorizing the Adler family and I noticed that Eli is described as a minor (under 18), as someone who is a few years older than another character who is 17 and it’s also mentioned that he was in college for 2 years. That last one may be me misremembering but the first two are for sure. After I thought I read how long he was in college and then again referred to as a minor I started keeping notes. This doesn’t have any bearing on the plot and some people will probably give zero effs but I am a stickler for continuity so I docked it half a star. The other half a star is for the ambiguous ending… I am not a fan of those!
Aside from those personal preferences, I loved this book. I am very grateful that I was able to get an advanced copy. I become a bigger fan of Robyn Harding with every book she writes.
Great mystery/thriller read. I read it in one sitting. It kept me on the edge of my seat throughout. Very enjoyable!
ANOTHER great book by Robyn Harding!! This book was fast-paced and kept me engaged throughout. I did not expect the "who dun it"!
Four stars!
I quite liked reading this one. The multi-pov really worked for me because I felt like I was in on each character's little secret. The pacing was well done and the fact that each person had their own secret or struggle meant I couldn't stop reading because I just needed to know how they all intertwined.
Reasons I can't give five stars:
- The characters. I found them so unlikable. They were all so self-absorbed and uninterested in their family and external relationships.
- The characters' actions. Some of them were too-far fetched. I kept rolling my eyes, wondering if it was for real or not. I couldn't take the twist serious, so I became less interested once I found out who was behind the attacks.
- The last 100 pages were a bit ... fluffy. The characters' actions were cheesy and blah. I was a little disappointed by the route she took for the twist.
All in all, a really quick read that had me hooked for the first 400 pages.
Thank you to Netgalley for the ARC.
She did it again! Author Robyn Harding has become my go-to-author for binge reads.
The Perfect Family is a page turning psychological thriller. I put everything aside to find out what happens. The family of 4 all have secrets they have from the world and each other. To be honest, the characters are often unlikeable, but I it’s impose not to keep reading to find out what happens.
Grab this for ripped-from-the-headlines satisfying read!
This book is about a perfect, rich, good looking family living in suburbia when all of a sudden they become targets of attacks on their house that turns more sinister as time goes on. I love all of Robyn Harding's books and this one was no exception. I can't wait to read more in the future. One of my favorite authors!!
The perfect family isn't so perfect after all. Everyone is keeping secrets and now they're being targeted - acts of vandalism that started out small, but who could be doing this? Told from the perspective of each of the four members of the Adler family, we get to know them personally, learn about the secrets they're carrying and how it makes them feel. I really enjoyed Robyn Harding's last couple novels and I'm happy to say this one was no different. Well-written from cover to cover - fleshed out characters, the story was solid and the pacing was perfect. I look forward to reading more from this author!
Following this seemingly 'perfect' family of four from all of their perspectives was very fun! Each of them was navigating their own personal and interpersonal challenges privately, while together trying to figure out who was vandalizing their home. You keep thinking you've figured it out, but then the story continues to twist and turn and nothing is as it seems. Some of the surprises were better than others, but I was definitely kept on my toes. I was really disappointed by the ending at first, but after thinking about it more, it made sense. It left me hanging and I wanted answers, but it made perfect sense for the book and was definitely thrilling.
I loved reading from each person's perspective, and I thought the author did a great job of keeping the story quite seamless and smooth while switching perspectives. I appreciated reading about each family members' flaws but also seeing them come together and strengthen their relationships throughout the story. This was a good thriller overall - thank you to the publisher and Netgalley for the chance to read it!
I loved this story however I was a little put off at the multiple perspective changes. Every chapter is told through a different person's eyes and it makes it a little confusing for the reader (well for me anyway) to keep track of everything that is going on. The story is all about one event that takes place to this normal family but it is told through four different views who each have their own personal knowledge on why it could have happened. Each person has different reasons for why this event (an attack) would have happened to them but as the problem gets worse and more threatening they have to look into their pasts to find out who's dirty laundry is brining in the most flies. Once I got past the POV changes I really enjoyed this book and I really understood why it was necessary. I liked how we were shown all of the secrets that the family was hiding from each other, and the best part was every person in the family had a very interesting secret to hide so each perspective change was very interesting to read. It goes to show that just because you live under the same roof as someone you don't always know everything about them. Robyn Harding does it again, her thrillers will keep everyone on their toes and dying to find out what happens next. Her characters are so relatable and three dimensional that you really feel like you are living the story as it plays out. Very good read, I'm so glad that
I got the chance to check this one out, cause this is one book that will keep you guessing till the very last chapter. The only thing I have to say negative about this book was that it eventually comes to an end. And even though the ending was AMAZING I never wanted this book to finish. I can't wait to see what this gem of an author comes out with next because all of her work is magical. Check out this book if you like thrillers
or just amazing reads in general.
Guys, Robyn Harding has created a masterpiece with this book!! The suspense is real! Each page theres always something new, some secret, some twist..
Each member of the Adler family has some sort of secret that noone else in the family know about. And once things start happening to their house, each member wonders if its all happening because of them and the secret their keeping!
This was a gripping story, a nail biter, I didn't want it to end! I loved that there wasn't any point in the story where you were bored...or uninterested. I have a read a few of Robyn Hardings books and this one by far is my favourite. Highly reccomend!
I got this for my mom and she really enjoyed it, Robyn Harding’s summaries has always sound really good bu then I struggle with the pace and usually feel bored with how it goes.
No matter how perfect they may seem, every family has secrets they keep from the outside world, and even from each other. The Adler family is no exception. Thomas and Viv appear to have it all - nice cars, a big home, successful careers, and two great kids. Until one night, someone starts egging their home, slashing their tires, and increasingly vandalizing their property over the coming weeks. The cops think it is just the work of bored teenagers, but everyone in the family feels guilty. Guilty because they each have a secret, a reason why their home might be a target.
This is the first novel I’ve read by Harding and I enjoyed that it was written from the perspective of all four family members. She switched effortlessly between each character, which is not an easy feat when writing as an adult, a college student, and a teenager.
Each of their secrets is revealed pretty early on in the novel. This would not have been an issue, except that I felt it made the middle of the novel drag on. It felt quite repetitive as a vandalism incident would occur, we’d read each family members’ thoughts and feelings of guilt over it, the next vandalism would occur, and the cycle would start over again. I think this was meant to build suspense through each cycle, but it felt drawn out rather than suspenseful.
The last few chapters of the novel were a bit more exciting as several plot twists were revealed. Although not all of them were surprising, I appreciated that there were multiple reveals as it kept me guessing right until the last page. However, I was not happy with the very end of the novel. For the sake of not giving anything away, I can’t say anything more than that.
Overall, I enjoyed the premise of Harding’s novel and her strong writing style. I wouldn’t call it a thriller, but would recommend this book to anyone who enjoys a family drama.
Thank you to Simon & Schuster Canada and NetGalley for this ARC in exchange for an honest review.
This book follows a family of four while they endure attacks to their house that start innocently and become increasingly more violent and threatening. Each family member has their own reasons of being a target to these attacks, but whose sordid past is to blame?
This book was so hard to rate because on one hand, I absolutely hated all of the characters with a passion and on the other it was so enthralling and suspenseful that I couldn’t put it down. This is the second book I’ve read by (AUTHOR) and her writing does not disappoint. She has an amazing ability to craft these wickedly horrible characters that you somehow want to root for through their flaws. If you like suspenseful books, you’ll definitely enjoy this one!
Trigger Warnings: Assault, Sexual Assault, Stalking,
This is the third book by Harding that I’ve read, I’ve come to really enjoy & look forward to her books. For me this one is better than The Swap & equal to Her Pretty Face. All of the four main characters in this book have secrets, things they’re hiding from the outside world & each other. We learn the secrets pretty quick which will appeal to some readers (I myself could’ve used a tiny bit more anticipation), but the real puzzle is who is harassing them? Which family member is the target? That’s what really kept me flipping the pages! I definitely did not figure out the endings/solution easily. This is a solid domestic thriller, one I think will appeal to a lot of people. I’d say start with Her Pretty Face first, I enjoyed that one a lot & then read this book. Harding is on my TBR pile of authors I’m always keeping my ears open for when their next novel is out.
Robyn Harding presents a dysfunctional family in which each member hides their own dirty little secrets. But someone out there may just know one of these secrets and is tormenting the family, starting with eggs thrown at their house and escalating as the days go by. The novel had me in a tense state, from start to finish, wondering what would result from each family member’s bad decisions. A great read - I devoured it and was left wanting more.
Robyn Harding’s The Perfect Family is the perfect fast paced thriller read. I read this book quite quickly and it had me turning the pages NEEDING to know what was going to happen next.
The Adler family seems like a perfect family from the outside, but on the inside each one of them is hiding a major secret from the family. These secrets seem to be safe and sound until the Adler home begins to be targeted by someone. First the eggs that are thrown at the windows, then the tires that are slashed, then the fire that was set. The secrets begin to unfold as the family tries to figure out why their home is being targeted. Will the secrets finally be revealed or will the house go up in flames first? Read this fast paced page turning suspense book to find out!
I enjoyed the family dynamic and I didn’t expect the ending. Although some of the grand reveals were a little far fetched, I really enjoyed this book and didn’t get bored of the plot line. It definitely had me guessing but also questioning some of the character’s choices.
Thank you to Simon Schuster Canada, Robyn Harding and Netgalley for this advanced copy. If you enjoy thrillers, page turners, secrets and a whole lot of family drama, definitely put this one on your summer list. It comes out August 10 th and I highly recommend it!
Overall this book deserves 4 houses out of 5.
To the outside world Viv and Thomas are giving then appearance of a perfect life. They have a beautiful home and cars and great careers. Their child, Eli, is attending a prestigious school and their youngest Tarryn is a growing teenager. However, inside the home is an entirely different story, Thomas is being blackmailed, Viv has turned to stealing from clients, Eli is dropping out of school after being involved in a hazing and Tarryn has entered the world of online sex work.
When kids starts vandalizing their perfect home they all become suspicious of who is the target of the perpetrators.
I have to say this is definitely my favourite book of the 3 I have read by the author. I flew through this one in less than 24 hours as I was just hooked early on. Each of the chapters alternate between the members of the family and tell their perspective. I thought this was a unique premise and just an all around enjoyable read. I will definitely be recommending this to everyone.
This was a really good book. I was hooked from page one. It kept me guessing until the end. I highly recommend.
