I have a love/hate relationship with her books. This one falls into the love category. Everything about it was just great.
OK, I'm a bit upset by this - because I was expecting so much more, and ended up being totally disappointed in the ending. I was hooked on this book, did not want to put it down, and was racing to the finish. But once I got there, I literally said, "Is this it?!" Not the reaction you want to have at the end of a book like this.
The Adler family is seemingly perfect on the outside - a beautiful, perfectly-kept house, two successful kids, the white picket fence, etc. But each member of the Adler family has a dark secret that they're keeping from the rest. Dad Thomas had a crazy weekend at a coworker's bachelor party, and now getting blackmailed by a dancer that he (allegedly) assaulted. Mom Viv is a burgeoning kleptomaniac and has a bad habit of picking up friends' and strangers' items when their back is turned. Son Eli has decided to drop out of prestigious Worbey College after he witnessed/unwillingly participated in an awful hazing ritual for his soccer team. Daughter Tarryn is a typical morose teen girl with a secret camming life in her basement room late at night.
When a mysterious stranger - or strangers - start to assault their house, the Adlers have to figure out whose secret - or secrets - is causing these attacks. It starts out as seemingly harmless as kids egging the house, but soon escalates to bricks through the window, smoke bombs outside, and even a hedge on fire that threatens to burn down their whole house.
One of my biggest gripes is that the Adlers' secrets - in my opinion - are not really all that horrible. I guess that's what Harding was trying to do: pick a secret that's not a life-threatening, life-changing, truly deep, dark secret, but something that's just a step below that. But in my mind, what ended up happening is that the level of chaos that ends up happening could be easily fixed by the family just coming clean with each other, causing way more ado about relatively nothing than is necessary.
Also, not to beat a dead horse, but other reviewers raved about the ending and how unexpected it was, but I simply did not agree. Was overall not super impressed with the way the story wrapped up.
I received this book as an ARC from Gallery Books via Netgalley.
Robyn Harding has quickly become a go-to author for consistently well written and fast-paced domestic thrillers. This one is no different. A family full of secrets and a mystery assailant, or assailants, who may have a connection to one or all four members as they are all keeping huge secrets. The story is told from each of them in alternating chapters and each character is fleshed out. Are they likeable? No. Does this distract from the story? Also no. I don't want to give anything away so I will just leave it at that. I did question why no one just talked to each other, but as the story went on, I kind of get it. LOVED the ending! Just one surprise and twist after the other!
Thank you to #NetGalley, Robyn Harding and Gallery Books for this ARC.
4.5 stars rounded up. I love Robyn Harding and was thrilled to receive an ARC in exchange for an honest review. A family of 4’s home is under attack, and each family member has their own unique secret from the rest of the family. Who’s responsible for the vandalism at their home? Who’s dark secret is the reason behind it, and who will admit their secret to the family in order to put a stop to the torment?
4.5 stars purely because the ending fell flat for me, but it was a page turner for me. I wouldn’t expect anything less from Robyn Harding!
Robyn Harding is one of my favourite authors, and this book did not disappoint! A family who seems to have it all on the outside, but on the inside, they are all keeping dangerous secrets from each other. And when things start to unravel and they start to get targeted, just who is to blame?
I don't want to say too much at the risk of revealing a spoiler, so I will end with a recommendation that if you enjoy books laden with secrets, then I suggest that you try this one.
The Perfect Family! Ha! These people are a mess - all four of them. They each have secrets, some worse than others, but none of them good. So there's no shortage of possibilities behind everything happening to them. As the story progresses, the list of people who could know any of these secrets grows, and with that, the tension rises steadily. And that brings me to a big twist. You know the one, the one that leads to the conclusion, the one that ties everything together. I'll admit I didn't see that one coming, and it would've been perfect if the book had ended with that reveal. Instead, the story continues and the ending is as twisted as this family. That wouldn't be a problem, but the conclusion is as convoluted as this family's secrets. After so much tension, the ending just kind of fizzled for me. From what I'm seeing, I'm certainly in the minority about this one, so take my opinion for what it's worth - one person's opinion, and if you enjoy drama-filled domestic thrillers, give this one a shot.
Thomas and Viv it would seem have it all. What they portray to the neighbors is perfect even some would say. One day though things start to happen to them one by one. Cameras show grainy shadows. We are very intrigued by it all. Most think it is teenagers but we know better. They also have secrets with in this make for dangerous to come knocking. We scratch our heads to figure it out. Turn the pages to find out what is really going on.
Whoa!! Every family has a secret or two, but in this story each family member has their own secret. As secrets start to spill out the family comes together. A couple of great surprise twists and kept me entertained and turning page after page!! Couldn’t stop reading!!
This book is one of the most suspenseful thrillers I've read in awhile, and the mystery of who is harassing the Adler family will make you never want to put this book down. I read a lot of thrillers and unfortunately I am able to predict the endings to a lot of them, but I really didn't see this ending coming. The only reason I'm giving this book 4 stars instead of 5 is because of the ending--after putting myself through the stress of reading a thriller, I like to have all of my questions answered in the end. However, this book leaves many mysteries up to the reader to speculate. Overall, a solid read that I highly recommend for anyone who wants to be on the edge of their seat!
The Adler family is drowning in secrets. This is a wonderful story with many twists and turns. The story is told from the point of view of the four main characters in the Adler family. The author does a superb job of telling each of their story and tying them nicely together. Family becomes the key that holds them together yet it almost rips them apart.
Another winner by Harding! This is her best yet. All the ingredients for a perfect, page-turning thriller.
The Adlers are seemingly a perfect family. As far as their neighbors can see, they have success, a beautiful home, fancy cars, and a happy family. But the truth is, the Adler family is messy. When the attacks first begin they are a nuisance, just teenagers egging their home. Then it escalates to slashed tires, smoke bombs, home invasions - it becomes dangerous. This can’t be random acts of violence fueled by teenage angst. Someone is out to get them, but who? And why? Each of the four family members have a dark secret but none of them know who the hooded figures in the night are targeting.
I enjoyed this one! I consumed this book so quickly. I was reading as soon as I woke up, sporadically throughout the day, and right before bed. I really couldn’t put it down. Just the story of a typical nuclear family being tormented by their own misdoings was interesting on its own. The ultimate reveal was slightly disappointing to me at first but I continued reading and realized that there was actually more to the mystery leaving us with a little cliffhanger.
The Perfect Family is a book about a family who based on their appearance seem perfect, but the family is anything but-- everyone in this family has a secret. Viv and Thomas have their two children, a boy and girl and their perfect home. When pranks start happening at their home, at first they believe them to be harmless and done by neighborhood kids, but when the pranks start escalating to dangerous, more frequent incidents, the secrets that each family member is hiding could be the reasons for the attacks. But will they be willing to expose their secret? Even though it could save them from the attacks, would it destroy their family?
I really enjoyed this book. I loved how the book had four perspectives-- one for each member of the family. As a reader, I like multiple perspectives but sometimes more than 2-3 perspectives can be confusing and hard to follow; however, the perspectives flowed seamlessly throughout this story. Where one character left off, the next character would continue the story but through their eyes. I loved hearing the inner thoughts of the adults versus the children in the family-- which without the different perspectives, you would not have gotten as a reader. Also, the chapters were short so I felt like I just flew through this book. It was a very quick read.
The secrets among each family member also made for a very interesting and addictive read. First, I wanted to truly know and understand each of the secrets but then I also wanted to know which secret was the reason for the attacks on the family.
There were a few good twists throughout the story, but overall I would say the family secrets and drama is what really drove the plot. I liked how the book ended. I would recommend this book to anyone looking for more of a domestic thriller.
Thank you NetGalley and Gallery Books for an ARC of this book in exchange for an honest review.
The Perfect Family has probably been one of my favorite thrillers so far this year. The story is pretty fast-paced and Robyn does a great job making the characters different and not blend in with each other. I always love the idea of how there are people who think that a family is perfect when they really aren't. Families have secrets that they keep from each other and some of those secrets are what make them really not so perfect.
Only thing is that I wish this story didn't end on a cliffhanger because I have no idea if there's going to be another book.
How well do we know the people in our communities? How well do we know our own family members? The Adlers project the image of “the perfect family”, they live in a upper middle class subdivision, they drive expensive cars, and their children are doing well. The two children are an older boy, Eli who is playing collegiate soccer at an elite university and the younger child is Tarryn, who is a decent student but fiercely independent and rebellious. Mom is a self made interior designer and Dad is a realtor. They are each struggling with guilt or apprehension about their personal secrets that they keep, when the family is targeted for harassment by a group of kids. Initially it starts out small, with eggs thrown at the house, followed by increasingly more direct and frightening attacks.
They attempt to have their local police investigate but they don’t seem interested. So each family member must explore their personal secrets to uncover whose secret is at the heart of these attacks.
I loved several things about this book, such as the style, with short and page-turning chapters as well as the rapid switch between character’s POV. I never really cared tremendously about any of the characters as people, which limited by empathy for any of them. I also was disappointed with the law enforcement portrayal as so dismissive of any of the events. I would love to know if this is meant to be an aside, a commentary about what police officers do or feel, or the angst from each character suffering with their own guilt and then projecting onto the police those feelings. I didn’t connect enough with anyone to tease this out.
Overall, it is a good thriller that I would recommend but wasn’t my own favorite of the great thriller filled year that we are seeing in publishing. This book would be great for someone who loves a thriller but is looking for a lighter thriller.

The Perfect Family is a slow burn, domestic drama with a tiny bit of thriller thrown in. The Alder family is the envy of their circle and appears perfect from the outside. That all changes when one night their house is pelted with eggs. The next night, it’s apples and soon the attacks are accelerating and the entire family is on edge.
Y’all this family is messed up. They all have secrets that they refuse to share and keep digging their own holes deeper and deeper. It’s quite a puzzle trying to figure out who’s the target is the attacks.
Unfortunately, The Perfect Family was a little too slow for my enjoyment and I found the character’s actions too illogical. I’m going to give this one three stars! ⭐️⭐️⭐️

This was a middling read for me. One thing I've noticed with Robyn Harding is that I tend to love the descriptions more than I wind up loving the actual books. She's a good writer, but for whatever reason, I never really gel with her characters. There is a lot of intrigue here for the most part, but for me at least that increased decreased as the story went on - a strange juxtoposition exists in that there is a lot going on while simultaneously nothing at all. However, if you love secrets and don't mind a cast of pretty unsympathetic characters, this wouldn't at all be a bad beach or airplane read for you.
Thank you to Netgalley and Gallery Books for the ARC.
🌟🌟🌟🌟 4/5 stars
Robyn Harding always delivers the perfect summer thriller set in the suburbs and I always devour her books by the pool. The Perfect Family is another fast-paced, insane, and juicy read and I absolutely loved it.
The Perfect Family is about Viv, Thomas, Eli, and Tarryn Adler. While the Adlers care desperately about how their family is perceived by others, each is hiding a secret that could destroy not only their reputations, but their family. When they become targets of increasingly alarming pranks, they realize that someone out there knows their secrets and wants them to pay.
This book was intense and never let up until the crazy ending. There were twists upon twists and I loved the cast of very flawed characters. Robyn Harding excels at writing characters that you don’t necessarily like, but you care about. She never lets me down on delivering books that are the perfect summer reads - insane, entertaining page-turners that make me forget that I’m out in the sun (which leads to severe sunburn). The Perfect Family is another hit and I cannot wait to discuss it with others when it releases on 8/10/21!

Dad, Mom, brother, and sister...they do portray such a perfect family, but behind closed doors, each character is hiding something. Told in 4 POV, I get the chance to get to know all the characters, and I am stunned by all their experiences and thoughts. The reveal was shocking; I didn't see that coming at all. This is a perfect read for those who love a gripping, mind-bending, and suspenseful read!
This one snagged my interest right away. The chapters in the book switch from Viv, to Thomas, to Eli to Tarryn. I really liked how we get each family member’s perspective. I love a good family drama, and this definitely delivered. Each person had their own secrets they were hiding from the rest of the family. It was truly messed up stuff, so that was interesting. I didn’t really like any of the characters, but I don’t think you are supposed to. The first good chunk of this book kept me going, and was fairly intense. And then the ending sort of fell flat for me.
Bottom Line: Overall, I enjoyed reading the book. It was really hard to put down, definitely kept me guessing the entire time. I just wish the ending was different somehow? It was sort of a let down.
