This is the story of a family who is being targeted. Each member of the family has a secret. Nobody knows who's after them and why.
A perfect family is the title for a family that is far from perfect. This family is full of secrets and as a result apprear to be targeted by pranks that take a decidedly scary turn. As we learn what is had been going on with each family member, it seems likely that each person may be the focus of these attacks. The pranks soon turn into attacks which will have severe consequences forcing each person to admit their secrets.
This was a real page turner, although I was unhappy with the ending.
WOW Did I love this book! I had NO idea what was going to happen by the end. The details we were given were so well timed; I loved that each family member had their own POV. Every little nugget of information that we needed played so well into what the other family members were saying that it was very hard to determine who was at fault. I loved this book.
A book about a seemingly perfect family with many underlying dark secrets.
The premise of the book is what pulled me in, and I usually like Robyn Harding books so I decided to read this one. The family of four starts getting attacked and they are all wondering what is causing the attacks. Each of the family members has their own secret which could be causing the attacks. We get to read for four different POVs which keep the book exciting and fast-moving.
But in the end, I found this book to be underwhelming. Harding writes great books which keeps the readers hooked but dorps the ball in the end and that is how I felt about this latest book as well.
I enjoyed the reading journey but am unhappy with the ending. Not reading this book is no a huge loss.
What is really going behind closed doors???? Viv and Thomas Adler are seriously the perfect of example of, "not all families are perfect." We all have our dysfunctions, but this family took it up a notch, ok maybe more than one notch because they all had secrets I didn't see coming.
The Adler's want to give this image of being the perfect family, with the perfect kids, and that adds a lot of pressure to Eli and Tarryn. I love these two, Eli is straight up about how he feels about his parents, and Tarryn is the black sheep, and their parents are so full of themselves that they don't realize that their kids hate them, lol.
The book dragged a little too much, and when the mystery of who is Vandalizing their home comes to light, and their own little secrets get revealed, the book ended, and I felt there was no real conclusion. Overall though, the character build up is amazing, the story line was awesome, I kept on reading because it was getting so intense, and the twists left me gasping.
Thanks Netgalley and Gallery books for giving me the opportunity to read this book.
Thomas and Viv Alder and their children Eli and Tarryn are the perfect family , as they want others to believe.
We know there is no such thing as the perfect family..
The Alders are keeping secrets from one another.
Suddenly their house is attacked : tomatoes and eggs are thrown, paint is thorn on their door and Thomas's car tires ares slashed. The police believe these are acts of teenagers.
One night the hedge on their house is set on fire, this causes the police to consider this an act of an adult.
Thomas is being blackmailed by compromising photos taken of him at a bachelor party. Viv is stealing things from friends. Eli dropped out of college due to a hazing he participated in and Tarryn is camming at night when her parents are sleeping . All of these secrets will come to light.
Thomas & Eli confront one of the teen vandals and then are sued by his parents.
Viv's act of stealing pills causes one family's son to be severely beaten by drug lords..
Thomas buys a handgun to protect his family and as we know having a handgun in a house is not a good idea.
As it happens in this case one night Viv shoots a hooded person in her backyard whom she believes will cause harm to her family. This has far reaching consequences.
Thomas discovers who is behind the blackmail photos .and Viv,, Eli & Tarryn all make changes to their lives.
Thomas and Viv Adler are married with two children, Eli and Tarryn. All four of them are keeping secrets from each other and because of it, harm has come to them.
You see, someone is out to get the Adlers and they are becoming the talk of the neighborhood.
It starts with eggshells on the window, progresses to a smoke bomb in the front yard, the slashing of tires, the burning of a bush on their stoop, and keeps progressing from there. It’s been escalating and yet, no one in the family is fessing up.
This book was so good that I could not put it down. I was a little disappointed in the ending but it deserves more then 5 stars. No one has the perfect family and this book just throws that out there even more.
The perfect family is the most dysfunctional family behind closed doors. Every member has a terrible secret they’re keeping from everyone else in the family and while they’re under siege from attacks on their house no one is saying a word. I liked the alternating POV on this but some of it was just too unbelievable and again, I’m rolling my eyes. Great summer read if you don’t want anything too deep. Many thanks to netgalley and the publisher for this copy for review.
The Perfect Family by Robyn Harding is a domestic thriller about the Adlers, an outwardly perfect and successful upper middle class suburban family being targeted. At first, it starts with vandalism, but each subsequent attack escalates, becoming more menacing. The story is told in the perspectives of each family member: Thomas, patriarch and real estate agent; Viv, matriarch and home designer/stager; Eli, their 20 year old son who has recently dropped out of college; and 17 year old Tarryn, a surly outcast teenager. Each character has secrets and hidden lives from each other and wonders if they're somehow responsible for motivating the attacks. The story is told in quick chapters, which made the story moving and engaging. Though the family isn't really likable, but the fast-moving plot and the different character's lives kept me riveted. The twists and conclusions were surprising, but felt organic. A very enjoyable domestic thriller!
Thank you Gallery Books and NetGalley for providing this ARC.
The Perfect Family by Robyn Harding is the perfect domestic thriller, in my opinion. It’s all that and a bowl of cherries. Yes, I recycle this same joke every summer when I’m feasting on cherries. It’s just too easy. The Adler family seems to have it all. They’re just your typical suburban family living down the street. Thomas, the patriarch of the family is a successful realtor, and Viv, the matriarch is just getting her interior design business off the ground. Their teenage children, Eli and Tarryn are both smart and very well-mannered. Each member of the family is hiding a pretty gritty secret. They all have something to hide from one another, and are doing their best to keep things under wraps. The Adlers wake up one morning to discover that their house has been egged. They quickly wave it off, and blame it on immature kids pulling pranks. However, it doesn’t just stop there. The vandalism keeps occurring, and it actually becomes quite worrisome. All of a sudden, things start to escalate VERY quickly. Each of the Adlers believes that they’re to blame for the house attacks. The secret they’re each harboring is now harming their entire family. I was perplexed as heck trying to piece this puzzle together. Who was the attacker? Who are they targeting? When will this madness end? Harding is the queen of twisty build-ups and outrageous jaw-dropping moments. She has a knack for tricking her readers and messing with their minds! The outcome of this novel floored me. There’s just no way you could see it coming! No way at all. With each new chapter, we get a different family member’s perspective. I loved being able to check in with each of the Adlers, and throw all of my blame and judgement on each and every one of them! Ha! Harding’s latest is definitely one of my favorite thrillers of the summer. Be sure to grab a copy when it releases on August 10th. You need to be keeping up with the Adlers, and all of their craziness!
WOW! Robyn has done it AGAIN! I was drawn in and everytime I thought I had it figured out she through something else out. This was actually one mystery I couldn't solve before the end. On another note THAT ENDING WOW!
Robyn Harding is so adept at insulated domestic thrillers. There is not a likeable character in this book and yet I needed to know what would happen. There was something so realistic about the family enduring such trauma while insisting on keeping their secrets to themselves.
I know this book had many mixed reviews but that did not sway me from my own opinion and I was still open-minded reading this. This book centers around a family that each has their own secrets, guilt, and shame.
A wife that steals.
A husband that is being blackmailed.
A son that has left college for tragic incident.
A daughter that web-cams for money.
Someone, maybe multiple people know all these secrets and has start to harass the family in their own home. Everyone is reaching a breaking point. What do the harassers want or is this payback/punishment for their misdeeds?
Not sure if I liked the ending because it leaves it open for another book, do not know if this is author's intent but it made the book seem unfinished...
However, I still enjoyed this and recommend it and may get this at publishing.
Thanks to Netgalley, Robyn Harding and Gallery Books for an ARC in exchange for an honest review.

I would suggest going into this one knowing it's more of a family drama than a thriller and you will absolutely enjoy it. I loved this author's previous book so I had high expectations. The things that this family had to put up with were absolutely insane and ridiculous. I know I would have lost my cool way before they did. There were so many big secrets and lies between the family members that it kept the story interesting the whole time. I really want to explore Harding's backlist titles after finishing this one to see how her writing has changed/improved since then. She is one author I would definitely recommend checking out.
Meet the Adlers. Thomas is a successful real estate salesman. His wife Viv is trying to start a design business but the only jobs she doesn’t lose are stagings at the homes her husband has for sale. Meanwhile, their son, Eli, is home from college for summer vacation but unbeknownst to his parents doesn’t intend to return to college for his junior year because of something bad that happened there. Finally, there’s his sister Tarryn, a somewhat prickly and angsty high school junior who’s having problems of her own.
On the surface, with their expensive house, luxury cars, and an upper middle class lifestyle, they seem no different from the other complacent families who live in their suburb.
However, as you’ll find out, the Adlers are not your ordinary well-off suburban family. To say they’re a dysfunctional well-off suburban family is a gross understatement. Each family member is hiding a dark secret about themselves around which the book turns and twists.
I’m normally not a fan of novels written with alternating chapters told from the point of view of different characters, but Harding uses it ingeniously and flawlessly to both create characters the reader really gets to know and to advance the plot. It’s also a great vehicle to keep the reader guessing because as each character’s secret is exposed little by little in each of the chapters they narrate, there’s a new twist.
I’m a longtime fan of Harding’s books. Each time one of her books is published I start reading it thinking that there’s no way the new one can top the last one. And every time, I’ve been proven wrong. If you love domestic suspense novels, I strongly encourage you to read The Perfect Family.
The Adler Family might seem perfect but they each are keeping their own dark secrets from one another. When an assailant or assailants begins harassing their house in the middle of the night it's hard to know why it's happening. The police shrug it off as a bunch of bored teenagers just wanting be annoying but is it something more? The attacks seem to be getting worse with each passing day and the fear begins to build for the Adler Family. Who is responsible and will they go to far?
I really couldn't get into this book. The only thing I liked was it was told in multiple perspectives. That being said, I found the characters unlikable which isn't always a bad thing. In fact, Harding generally does a stellar job making her characters unlikable but the story is usually engaging for the reader. The plot was a bit slow and not that exciting. I typically enjoy this author so I am kind of bummed. Overall this just fell short.
3.5 stars - I really enjoyed this thriller - a seemingly perfect family is being attacked and each family member has a secret and believes they are the target. I liked the different points of view and the story was well paced to keep me wanting to continue. I was not a fan of the ending though (no spoilers here), so I docked a half star.
Thanks to the publisher and NetGalley for an advanced copy in exchange for an honest review.
Thank you to Gallery Books for my NetGalley ARC of The Perfect Family! I read this thriller in one sitting and couldn't get enough. This is #DespairInSuburbia for sure!

Thomas and Viv have a seemingly perfect suburban life with a beautiful house and beautiful children. But things quickly start to go wrong as pranksters begin to target their house. As the pranks escalate, the family's secrets begin to come out.
Harding did a great job ramping up the tension in this one - I could feel the family's desperation as the assaults increased. There were so many twists that I didn’t see coming. This family is full of unlikeable people, all of whom are incredibly entertaining.
If you need to identify with the characters you're reading about, this may not be the book for you. But if you like domestic thrillers or soapy shows like Desperate Housewives, give this one a try.
I read this book on a flight to Italy and found myself immersed in the world of the Adler family. The Perfect Family is my first Robyn Harding book, and I am now interested in reading her other novels. This book was entertaining, intriguing, & dove deep into the mental perceptions of the characters. This is a domestic psychological thriller that will keep readers hungry to decipher its secrets. The narrative is told through the viewpoint of four psychologically stressed characters, revealing their complex inner worlds and often tumultuous relationships with the outside world. This is not a novel full of plot twists or spine tingling elements; however, it is chock-full of psychological themes such as identity, perception, reality, and spectacles. Robyn Harding’s writing is captivating as she conveys the characters lives through kaleidoscopic storytelling. The Perfect Family illustrates the corrosive, bleak nature of families built upon the need to cover every flaw and mask every imperfection. The author analyzed the characters while not compromising narrative pace. Despite their flaws, I liked these characters as the story evokes both compassion and understanding. Personally, I enjoyed the ending of the book and found it utterly satisfying. Thank you to @netgalley & @simonandschuster for my review copy. This book will be published on 8/10/21.
Thank you to NetGalley for an advanced copy of this novel. This book was a very quick read for me. I always love a book with short chapters and simplistic writing that’s very action driven. The Perfect Family was exactly that for 90% of the book and it kept me interested and entertained. Until the ending took my 3.5/4 star rating down to a 2/2.5 and so we’ll average it at a 3.
The Perfect Family is about the Adler’s who all think and hope they appear to be “perfect” on the outside but are all keeping secrets from each other. Patriarch Thomas is a real estate agent that went a little too far with a stripper one night and now she’s blackmailing him. Mom, Viv, is a bit of a kleptomaniac and no one knows. Usually the things she steals are harmless, but has she gone too far this time? College aged Eli has dropped out of school because he witnessed a hazing event gone too far and it forever scarred him, but his family just thinks he’s a lazy dropout. And youngest high schooler Tarryn is secretly posing in sexy attire on cam sites until someone she knows recognizes her. One day, the Adler’s house gets egged. Then it’s beer cans. And then it gets worse and worse every day. The Adler’s have no idea who is behind the attacks, they all feel guilty, but no one will talk about it. Which family member is responsible for making someone so mad that they’ve attracted a incessant vandal?
Like I said, the storyline was super interesting but my gosh did I really dislike the ending. It was both too neat and also left gaping holes and unanswered questions at the same time. The prologue was pointless and the last line infuriating. The resolve to all 4 characters storylines honestly could have been better and more creative and they all also felt rushed. I’d recommend this only if you’re looking for a quick read thriller that’s not very heavy. Otherwise, there are better options out there for thrillers IMO.
