Robyn Harding has easily become a favorite of mine! All of her previous books are heck of a ride and this one is no exception! Buckle up and hold on tight, there's enough twists and turns to make a roller coaster jealous! Great story, interesting characters and a heck of an ending! Thank you so much!
2.25 stars...
I've recently come to learn that I don't think I like books that primarily take place in someone's mind. I just get so bored reading someone's thoughts...for hundreds of pages.
And this book, all took place in the mind of the four family members in this 'perfect' family.
All four members of this family have secrets they keep from one another, and are constantly obsessing over these secrets in their head...for 300+ pages. And since they have someone terrorizing their house (throwing eggs, slashing tires, etc.), each one thinks their secret is to blame for what is going on with their house.
And that's the gist of the book. BUT I do think that if you like stories like You, you may really like this! I personally was very bored during that book so this one probably wasn't the right fit for me.
A huge thank you to NetGalley and Gallery Books for the ARC and wanting my honest opinion!
I read this over the course of a day - once I got started, I really wanted to know what was going on. The story is told through all four family members POVs, and each of them has a secret that they believe is causing the abuse the family is suffering. Nobody in this family is likable, and as often happens in these types of stories, most of the plot could've been solved if they had just *talked to each other frankly literally like one time.* But! Quick read, and the ending 👀
The Adlers are "The Perfect Family". Thomas and Viv, two children - one boy, one girl, a lovely home in a wonderful neighborhood, jobs they enjoy.
BUT ... is there such a thing as "perfect"? Well. The Adlers. They have secrets. Big secrets. Each of them has a big secret. And not a one of them knows that the others have secrets as well.
Then their house gets egged. A prank. Neighborhood kids. Their daughter is in high school - maybe it's her friends. Maybe she's made someone angry. They don't think much of it. But then other things continue to happen. Less benign that the egg throwing. Things escalate. Police are called. Tensions mount. Each member panics that *THEIR* secret is the attacks are happening. *We* the readers know the secrets.
Like an onion (which was not thrown at the house) this book is multi-layered. Just when you think you have it figured out, another layer is peeled back. With each family member keeping a secret the plot thickens. Soon, each family member begins to wonder if the escalating pranks are geared toward him/her. Each begins to wonder who knows his/her secret?
It was interesting to watch the secrets come out, the story unfold. Some things I saw coming. Most I did not. Clever twists and turns. And the ending!
If you want to know more, you'll have to read it yourself!

Thank you to Gallery Books and Net Galley for the opportunity to read The Perfect Family by Robyn Harding.
Meet Viv, Thomas, Eli, and Tarryn Adler. On the outside, they look like the "perfect family", but holy moly.......looks can be deceiving. Each member of this family is flawed. Let's see.......one of them is a kleptomaniac, one is running an online cam service, one is being blackmailed, and one has witnessed a horrific act at college and won't be returning in the fall. However, each member of the family is hiding their troubles from one another. But, when their house starts getting vandalized, they start to wonder if they may be the cause. When a tragedy strikes one of them, the truth surfaces. So, just what happens and who is the culprit or culprits? This book reminds us that all families are flawed; but at the core there is love.
This was the first Robyn Harding book I've read. Sign me up for her next one right away! The Perfect Family releases August 10, 2021. It's the "perfect" summer read!!!!
A family domestic drama that was a quick read.
I really enjoyed hearing the whole family give their point of views and each one had some kind of issue. Yep, plenty of secrets to keep you guessing. There is someone "out there that's not happy with someone else in the family and that's when the mystery begins. I great read and a book that you don't want to put down until you find out what the big mystery is.
I loved this book! I loved the characters, each and every one of them. I loved the way the chapters alternated between each of them and I loved the way each chapter ending left me hanging for more. I was so invested in this story and I’m sad it’s over! It would be amazing if there was a sequel coming!! Thank you to Netgalley & the publisher for this advanced copy in exchange for my honest review.
Overall I enjoyed this book. It was fast-paced with lots of twins and turns. I enjoyed the drama, the scandals, the secrets. It held my interest the entire time.
There was some repetition -- it probably could've been 50 pages shorter. And the anti-climactic ending left me feeling unsatisfied. I expected one final, jaw-dropping twist that never came. And the last sentence of the book? What was that? 😩😩😩
I actually despise endings like this.😒
So the ending wasn't the greatest, but the other 99% was really good -- resulting in a 4 star rating. (It could've been a 5 with a better ending).

I don't know if I am burning out on the domestic thriller or if I'm just sick of reading entitled people whine about their first world problems... Or maybe it was this book in particular, which alternated between the characters' trying-to-be-casual mentions of high-end possessions and how perfectly they wanted to present themselves to the world, and which often felt a little forced in both dialog and description.
It was fairly standard for the genre - a perfect on the outside family that is a hot mess on the inside. Everyone has secrets. Everyone is lying to everyone else. Everyone thinks the whole world revolves around them and that their secret will be the end of the universe as we know it. None of the secrets were really as big as their holders made them out to be (which, admittedly, is often the case with secrets).
The mystery behind the pranks was interesting but not enough to keep me wholly engaged. Mostly I just found myself irritated - at the characters, at their shallowness, and at the way they constantly got in their own way... This one wasn't for me.
From the outside, the Adler’s are “The Perfect Family”. But behind closed doors lurks many secrets, and that’s the premise for this novel. I’ve read and liked some previous books by this author, but this was hard to get through. The characters are all unlikeable (which is the point, I guess), but it’s hard to root for anyone. I found the dialogue a bit choppy, which was distracting, and I just couldn’t get into the flow of the story. I received an ARC of this book from the publisher through NetGalley in exchange for an honest review.
Wow this book has it all - lies, lies and more lies! Every single person in The Perfect Family is hiding one or more lies. When they’re house starts getting vandalized, each family member thinks they know who it can be. This was a fast read and I was anxious to see who the culprit was at the end. Each chapter is by a different character in their household and it’s easy to follow why each might have a motive. A few twists thrown in and at 88%, I found myself gasping out loud. This is my first book by Robyn Harding but I need to look into more of her books. Thanks to NetGalley and the publisher for this early release in exchange for my honest review.
The Adlers look like the perfect family. They worry about appearances. But, behind closed doors, everything is unraveling. When the house starts to be vandalized at night, each family member struggles about whether to reveal their secrets. Captivating and suspenseful thriller that keeps you turning and guessing until the very last page.
A perfect little family suddenly is besieged by nighttime vandalism to their home that escalates to dangerous and threatening violence. It is then that each person in the family is discovered to be hiding a secret that could explain why they are being targeted. Each try to handle their issues by themselves, but eventually need to confess that they believe it is related to their hidden issue. It feels like some of the secrets were not worthy of such angst and could have been solved much more quickly, but overall it kept the suspense up in the plot. I was a little disappointed in the family dynamics as they didn't seem to support each other very much as they were going through this harassment and wish that would have been a more positive impact of the stress of the situation. Overall a decent read.
The Perfect Family is a bit of a slow burn, with increasingly more dangerous pranks being pulled on the Adler family. However, the pranks take a backseat to each character’s inane ability to make everything about themselves and their secrets. The secrets make you wait for them to get worse, more interesting, worth the kind of events that occurring – and spoiler, they aren’t worth it. While the secrets were boring, and the characters frustrating, I stuck it out to the end with this one.
I stuck it out with the Perfect Family in the hopes that the twist would make it all worth it. It wasn’t. People may enjoy this for the slow tension, and I can understand that, but the ending was ridiculous, and the characters frustrating. Harding crafted a story that had opportunities to be great but failed to make use of those opportunities.

The Adler’s have the perfect life from the outside looking in but each of them are holding onto secrets from the rest. Once their house begins to be targeted and vandalized each wonder if the secrets they carry are the cause of these incidents.
I thoroughly enjoyed this book. I liked how I wasn’t sure which family member was truly the cause to the things happening to them, whose secrets where the worst. As the secrets unraveled at the end I was surprised by the outcomes in a few. This is a fast paced suspense with a who dun it vibe.
Very interesting read! Though in my opinion, it moved a bit slow. Still, it was a good story with excellent characters that will stay with me for a while.
I absolutely LOVED this smart, unique novel by Robyn Harding. This is definitely the fastest I have finished a novel in 2021- I blew through the chapters, completely enthralled with each flawed character and their insecurities. This was amazing work by Ms. Harding, she had me caring about all four of the members' of the Adler family, even though they were each involved in unseemly activities.
The Adlers' look like the perfect family. Their house is nice and well-kept. The parents each have successful careers, Thomas as a realtor and Vic as a home designer. Their seemingly perfect kids, Eli and Tarryn look the part, Eli with his soccer career at college and Tarryn the quiet, yet (typically) angry teen,
But somebody sees beyond the perfect exterior of the family. And someone wants the family to PAY. Suddenly the home is under attack by hooligans. Starting with eggs and fruit attacks on their windows and graduating to tire slashing and even starting a fire on their front porch, the Adlers begin to endure more and more vandalism directed at them and they are desperate to stop the attacks from escalating.
Each Adler has a dirty little secret and could be the cause of these intensifying attacks. Whose fault is it? Who is the target? Buckle up for a twisty and mind-boggling ride! I had no idea where the story would lead and was almost satisfied by a complex mind-bending ending! Great job, Robyn Harding on a 4.5 star read, almost 5 stars. READ THIS BOOK and enjoy every minute of it!
Thank you so much, Ms. Harding, NetGalley and the publisher for the ARC of this top novel of 2021!
I love Robyn Harding and this new novel does not disappoint! So many unlikeable characters and so many red herrings! Harding has this innate talent for writing tales about really despicable people, but writing them in a way that causes the reader to cheer for them and hope for their redemption. All families have secrets and this one is no different…so many secrets! Great book! Harding has done it again! Bravo!
Reading this book was so stressful. Every single person in the family had a major secret. Their house kept being assaulted. The truth is slowly revealed on a couple of,the story lines. But the ending left me dissatisfied because I didn't know who was doing it. I needed a stiff drink after finishing reading it since it left me felling very anxious. It's a good book, but be warned, lots of stress while reading it.
This book will make you wonder what secrets your loved ones are harboring! The Adlers look like the perfect family - successful, wealthy, a son playing collegiate soccer. But we all know that nobody’s perfect and all families have issues. When the family’s home starts being attacked, it’s hard to know if it’s bored kids causing trouble or are the attacks more sinister. A very entertaining read!
