I really enjoy Robyn Harding's novels. Although this one was not one of my favorites, it's still a quick domestic drama novel about the imperfections in one seemingly perfect family. None of the characters are particularly likeable and they all do some questionable things in the books, but I kept wanting to read more to find out who was behind the vandalism.
I’m such a huge fan of Robyn Harding, and this too was another great read for me! It wasn’t my very favorite of hers, but it was still captivating and unputdownable! I think I would call this more if a domestic drama/suspense book than a thriller, but it still had a good amount of twisty turns, chilling chills, thrilling thrills, and shocks! Overall, it was well written, with fantastically developed characters that kept me flipping pages until the very end! Highly, highly recommend!
The Perfect family has perfect mess on their hands!
Thomas and Viv Adler appear to have it all, a beautiful home, two healthy children, careers that they enjoy, and secrets! Let us not forget about the secrets! We all have them, right? Some secrets are big, and some are small, and some are dangerous!!! In this book, each member of the Adler family has secrets. But where does the egg throwing come in??? Youthful pranksters must be responsible; Thomas insists. But when the pranks begin to escalate, they begin pointing the finger at each other. Maybe their daughter upset someone at school, or perhaps their son did something to someone one, or perhaps.... you get the picture.
Like an onion (which was not thrown at the house) this book is multi-layered. Just when you think you have it figured out, another layer is peeled back. With each family member keeping a secret the plot thickens. Soon, each family member begins to wonder if the escalating pranks are geared toward him/her. Each begins to wonder who knows his/her secret?
As I mentioned, the reader is privy to each character’s secrets and I enjoyed reading and waiting to see if each character's secrets would be exposed. Do not worry about knowing their secrets, this will not affect your enjoyment of the book at all. For me, the fun was reading and wondering when/if their secrets would be known. If their secrets are spilled, their careers, lives and futures could be affected! As the book delves deeper into each character, it had me wondering if any of them would come clean and if they did, would it change things? Would the pranks stop? Would they get worse?
This quickly became a juicy and fun thriller. Why is this family being targeted? Who is behind it all? Will they get away with it? Robyn Harding throws everything but the kitchen sink at this family. There is a lot going on in this book, but nothing feels muddled down or glossed over. Each character is given ample page time, and each is interesting. As the family became more stressed with the escalating pranks, we begin to see the clinks in their armour. They become even more human as they begin to fall apart.
You think you know someone! Will you figure this book out? I loved that there were several things to figure out in this book! It kept me engaged, on the edge of my seat and going through my suspect list. What a delicious and clever whodunit!
Gripping, captivating and clever! It is no secret that I really enjoyed this book!
Highly Recommend!
Thank you to Gallery Books and NetGalley who provided me with a copy of this book in exchange for an honest review. All the thoughts and opinions are my own.
Thanks Netgalley for allowing me to read this book. Thomas and Viv live in a nice suburb with their two kids. One morning they wake up to their house being egged. When other threats stop happening, everyone in the family is hiding secret. Who would want to hurt them? This book kept me interested from the first page.
Robyn Harding’s books can always be counted on to be quick thrillers that pack a solid punch.
This one is no different.
The Perfect Family is about the Adler family who are all carrying secrets when someone starts playing pranks on their house and family. The pranks become worse and the secrets start to unravel.
Each chapter is told in different points of view from each family member. The chapters are super short so the story flows smoothly and easily builds anticipation.
The ending fell a little flat but overall I enjoyed this book.
Thanks to NetGalley for my advanced ebook copy.
Wowza! So smart, puzzling, intense, entertaining and absolutely best work of Ms. Harding!
Let’s meet with Adlers! They truly care about their appearances more than anyone. Creative home decorator Viv with perfect taste, workaholic, competitive realtor Thomas and their perfect kids Eli and Tarryn!
Everything in their live seems so perfect: perfect home, perfect yard, drive status-symbol cars! Viv and Thomas dressed the part of attractive, wealthy, stylish couple ! But behind the closed doors their world was falling apart. Each member of the family deals with their own ugly secrets which ruin their reputation, everything they’d worked so hard. If the secrets come out they’ll be shunned and everybody will look at them differently.
And now somebody or a group of random vandals may know their secrets and harass the family! It start with throwing eggs, smearing poop, puncturing tires, throwing smoking bombs! Police thought it was work of a few mischievous kids! But when somebody tried to burn their house down as they sleep inside, things get more escalated than they thought.
Viv keeps her kleptomania as secret. Nobody can threat her family because of her little issue, right?
Thomas is in panic because he did a very bad thing at bachelor party and now somebody is blackmailing him . Can the same guy be the reason of the nightmares his family has been enduring?
Eli wants to drop the college! He witnessed a hate crime. Could the perpetrators of this act also decide to threat his family?
And Tarryn: grumpy, bitchy high school girl in day, sexy Natalia at night for her camming community! Can one of her devoted fans be the reason of the attacks? Could his obsession escalate to do violent things to her family?
Buckle up and go blind for this extremely clever, twisty, mind blowing ride!
Especially the ending was well wrapped up, earned my extra half stars ( I’m giving 5.5 stars to a book for the first time)
Ms. Harding is extremely genius author who plays complex mind games with us during our reading journey. We keep guessing who may be the real culprit and we change our minds at several times because she knows how to misleads us and throws the bomb at our laps. We just sit, mouths agape and keep mumbling WTH just happened, trying to gather our wits after never see it coming conclusion.
Well done. Well played.
Special thanks to Netgalley and Simon&Schuster/ Gallery Books for sharing this digital reviewer copy with me in exchange my honest opinions.
Love, love, love!! Ms Harding is one of my favorite authors. Though she’s had a couple that I feel are a bit better than this, The Perfect Family is still a great read. I don’t recall a plot like this before in any book & it meanders enough into the whole family that the culpability for the attacks could lie with any family member. Truly does make one “grateful” for their normal, simplistic life.
A compelling tale of an entire family, each with intricate and dark secrets. Someone begins to terrorize their house as secrets begin to enfold. Fast paced and kept me guessing. A great thriller of a read.
I wanted to love this book, but in the end I found that it fell flat.
Viv and Thomas live slightly beyond their means in a lovely suburban home in a nice suburban neighborhood. They have two teenagers, a boy and a girl. The family is filled with secrets, inner guilt, hidden foibles, and so when someone begins egging their house in the dark of night, each inwardly feels responsible. The vandalism intensifies to slashed tires and burning hedges, and the family feels more and more terrorized. The police are inept and unconcerned, so Thomas buys security cameras and a gun. This plays out through the entire novel. Vandalism, guilt, vandalism, more guilt.
My problem with this novel is that I found none of the characters likeable at all. For the most part, they are vain, superficial, and not particularly intelligent. The story unfolds from the perspective of each family member in alternating chapters, which was never confusing, but only seemed to show how vapid each character is.
The mystery is solved with no real surprises and an attempt at a twist, but by that time, I just didn't care.
I wanted to love it, but I just didn't, however and I very grateful to NetGalley and the publisher for the opportunity to read The Perfect Family in exchange for a fair and honest review.
I adore all of Harding's other books and this one was one of my absolute favorites! We meet Viv, Thomas, and their two teenagers, Eli and Tarryn as they seem to be a "perfect" family. But each of the characters is harboring secrets that could blow up in their faces, so when their house begins to be "attacked" by eggs and rocks in the middle of the night, no one is sure whose secret has been discovered. Told from the four alternating points of view, the novel never loses its pace and things just escalate as each of the family members believe someone in their lives is responsible. Many relevant themes are addressed: the hidden dangers of social media, hazing, bullying, rumors spreading among friends, and the tenuous state of marriage when partners don't trust each other. Don't even try to figure out who is behind it all! Just ride this delicious roller-coaster of a book as you know Harding doesn't disappoint! And that last line will have you gasping!
Many families look perfect from the outside, bu
t the facade is quickly shattered when one looks inside. Thomas, Viv, and their children appear to have it all, until they don’t. Thomas and Viv’s marriage is rocky, Eli dropped out of college, and Tarryn is acting out in a dangerous way. This novel is full of tense situations and as the dominoes fall, it appears no one in the family will come out unscathed. Thank you to NetGalley and the publisher for allowing me to be an early reader in exchange for my review.
I actually really love this thriller about a family targeted by an unseen enemy. I could easily place myself in the main characters’ positions. It’s fast paced but at the same time develops into a complex story. I highly recommend this thoroughly enjoyable read.
