I got to 27%. I tried, but I didn't retain anything and I couldn't connect with any character. I unfortunately did not finish.
I've seen some mixed reviews for Where the Truth Lies but I really enjoyed it. The story is dark and atmospheric. I would recommend this one.
This was such a page turner! Two girls go to a party, one ravished with guilt after leaving her behind in the woods. This book was so well written, you did not know what was coming next. The family situation was a little complex , but this is what added to the juicy mix of the story! I truly enjoyed this book.
Where The Truth Lies is about a small town full of terrible people. There was not one character I liked, except maybe for Abi’s younger brother Jude. You’ve got homophobes, racists, and religious zealots, and that’s only the tip of the iceberg. In a way, it’s a little too realistic to be comfortable! The characters were well-written in that they were all so easy to hate, especially the adults.
This book was more character-driven than I’m used to in most thrillers, leaving the reader with a guessable twist and a couple of plot holes. On audio, I got a little mixed up between the Then and Now chapters and likely would have benefitted from a physical copy I could flip back through.
This book was quite the page turner for me. It covered so many topics and situations within some very sensitive arenas. Abuse, discrimination, love, diversity. It went in so many different directions that I had zero idea when I started this book I would be reading about! Well written and kept me rushing back to read at every moment I could.
My first Anna Bailey book and I really enjoyed myself. I will definitely look out for more of her books in the future.
Not catching my attention and there are so many books on my TBR that it’s not worth finishing. I think the 3rd person writing is making it boring.
This was indeed, per the description, a very dark, intense thriller. I usually like tropes like this. For some reason, I just struggled with this one. I found it a very slow burn, and just had a hard time getting through it. It could've been fantastic, but it just didn't measure up to my expectations after reading the synopsis.
Where the Truth Lies by Anna Bailey is one of those rare thriller novels that can be described in with the best, juicy adjectives: haunting, intense, dark, claustrophobic, and atmospheric (just to name a few). With themes like resentment, rage, hopelessness, judgement, bigotry, and hatred, prepare yourself for an unputdownable read.
Anna Bailey is a new author to me and this will not be the last book of her that I will read! It’s dark and twisted and scary and if that’s your kind of book then look no further!
This one was so confusing and I could not get in to it. I had no clue who the people were and didn’t feel like I got a good enough intro to make me want to continue reading.
This was one of the worst books I've ever read. I should've DNFed it but it was weird, and creepy, and I felt like I was missing something because the book felt incomplete.
A definite slow burn thriller. Nothing too out of the ordinary. It was an ok decent read. But not anything memorable.
A best friend desparately searches for answers when her other half disappears - did she run away or did someone take her? Thanks to a complicated family situation, there a suspects left and right. This book is twisted in many, many ways.
This one was okay. I got through it but it was a struggle. 3 stars, nothing great, nothing awful. I don't think I'll be reading more by this author.
Overall this was well built, thought provoking, high tension thriller with memorable characters ( I’m still thinking it will be well wrapped up with less characters but the developments and back stories of them are well built as well! )
Thanks to Netgalley for an electronic ARC of Where the Truth Lies.
I had a hard time finishing this book. Seventeen-year-old Emma and Abi go to a party in the woods outside their small town in Colorado. Emma leaves Abi at the party (at Abi's request) and Abi disappears. This leads to Emma trying to find out what happened. The book is told from multiple points of view and the timeline switches between the present and varying times in the past, which is confusing. Most of the characters are unlikeable and the overall story is dark.
Thank you for the advanced copy of this book! I will be posting my review on social media, to include Instagram, Amazon, Goodreads, and Instagram!
Unfortunately, this book is a DNF for me at 41%. The content is dark, which is never a problem for me; the parents intended by the Author to be deplorable ‘God-fearing’ people. The way the book is written, one aspect I like is the mystery throughout the narrative; the reader is given clues by way of actions that keep you guessing how it all fits together. Also, I like Noah, Rat, and Emma, all characters I care about;--how they're treated is heart-wrenchingly disturbing.
Where I had to call it quits is the intermittent POV of Noah's father, wherein you learn more about him, his past, and the possible reason he acts the way he does. The father’s perceived concern over his missing daughter and the mystery behind it is overshadowed by how he and his wife treat their family coupled with the father’s disturbing past. For me, it got to be a bit too much.
This book was unfortunately not for me. I think I'm starting to dislike these stories about a small town with lots of secrets - I don't love the way they're typically written, with lots of allusions to "what happened" and "what they don't want you to know." It's meant to cultivate an aura of mystery, but just annoys me for its failure to just get to the point and tell me what happened. I found the characters hard to keep track of, and so many of them were such awful, vile people that I had no interest in continuing the story. I could tell that Bailey's writing style was good - especially for a debut - and I hope to enjoy her next book a bit more.
