I can sum up review of this book in its title: Beware the Mermaids...
Nancy, Ruthie, Julie and Lois (and Nancy's granddaugther) form a formidable team of real-life mermaids: women with so much heart, soul, drive, resilience and hope that you can't help but laugh, cry with them, cheer for them, laugh out loud and gasp every page of the story.
I enjoyed this read immensely. I enjoyed the setting, the characters and dynamics between them. I wanted to be girls' friend from the page one. Oh, those 'get togethers' to discuss plans and drink wine in endless quantity...
Beware the Mermaids if full of light, sea breeze, hope, joy and endless possibilities, even if you are over the age of... Never mind, endless possibilities, chance at love, redemption, starting over is always there.
Carrie Talick must really know her boats and boa races. There is a lot of that: all things boats. But, for me, they did not take away from a very uplifting, encouraging, bright and colourful story of friendship and betrayal, failed marriage and complicated parenthood... But this story about mermaids ends... well, it doesn't end, really. But the ride is amazing. Enjoy.
4.5 stars! Beware the Mermaids is a fun, fresh story that has everything you’d want in a women’s fiction novel. Nancy Hadley catches her psychopathic husband Roger, cheating on her on their sailboat, Bucephalis. She's finally had enough and wants a divorce. She just wants the sailboat but Roger isn't budging. She and her friends end up buying a boat, calling themselves The Mermaids, and entering a boat race where the winner takes all!
This novel was delightful, funny and I hope we see more heartfelt stories from Carrie Talick.
Thank you to the publisher for my gifted eARC!
Where are my strong, independent, self sufficient women at?! This book is for you!
Nancy finds her husband, Roger, cheating on her with another woman-on their boat, the Bucephalus. Nancy wants a divorce, and their boat. Roger makes it difficult for Nancy and puts up a battle to ensure that Nancy doesn’t get a penny-a divorce-or the boat!
Nancy decides to get her own sailboat, the Gypsea, and with the help of her amazing friends-she challenges Roger to a 125 mile race from Newport Harbor to Ensenada Mexico-the winner takes all!
This is the perfect summer read, about a strong woman who never gives up hope, she learns to let go of the past and conquer the future, she never gives up on what she wants. This is a great read about romance, betrayal, the power of friendship, hope, and never giving up.
The author does such a great job with the writing, I felt really connected to Nancy-as if I was one of her friends helping her achieve all her hopes and desires. The writing is heartwarming and very inspiring and empowering.
Oh how I loved this book!! I'm all for anyone that raises themselves above a crappy situation (especially a crappy husband...) and kicks life's butt!! While I wanted to throat punch a few characters in the book (which is exactly what I'm sure the author intended lol) I absotulely fell in love with others - ESPECIALLY the Mermaids!! I would seriously have enjoyed a few more chapters to find out the "rest of the story". Nancy and her girls are women that I could actually see myself hanging out with! I would love a sequel, and would be super thrilled to see further come-uppances of that creepy jerkface exhusband, more tales of those high spirited Mermaids and see what love develops for Nancy and that ummmm certain handsome fellow (no spoilers ;)
I'm providing this honest review of this fabulous book in exchange for a digital ARC from Netgalley.
GO NANCY!
Nancy catches her cheating husband in the most awkward of ways, and she knows she can't go back to the life she had for 36 years. Roger, her husband, thinks this will just all blow over and he will have her crawling back to him soon. What he doesn't count on, is Nancy realizing how much happier she is without him and how she finds herself.
Nancy has always loved sailing and was taught at a young age, so when she asks for the boat in the divorce, her husband thinks she is crazy. He is awful, truly an awful person and the way he is written really makes you hate him so bravo to the author for being able to write someone so cunning and terrible.
Nancy tells Roger that if she can beat him in the big race, along with her crew of mermaids (her best friends and granddaughter), she wants the boat in the divorce. Roger isn't going down without a fight because he has always won.
I loved the friendships that grow and the family relationships that flourish in this book. There are so many people that don't have their eye on the big picture and being happy with yourself is the key here.
Thank you to Carrie Talick, Netgalley and Alcove for an early copy.
Thank you Netgalley and Alcove Press for the chance to read Beware the mermaids by Carrie Talick. While at first I had problems getting into the story, I don't think I gave it enough time to grab me, because as I continued I soon became immersed in the story of Nancy's 2nd chance at life after finding her husband Roger cheating on their racing sailboat. Deciding on a divorce, she turns to her best friends, Ruthie, Judy and Lois to help her move out of her house and on to her new plan...investing in a racing boat of her own! But Roger wont go quietly...because he hasn't just been cheating on Nancy, he has other secrets... a big real estate development is under way that would destroy her beloved harbor and new home, and nothing is going to stop him get it. I loved how strong Nancy gets as the book moves along and how bold she is when she makes the bet with Roger; sailing from Newport Harbor to Mexico, winner takes all.. Even though she knows her friends are novices as sailors, (calling themselves the Mermaids) she knows she is the better sailor than Roger and takes strength in that. I also enjoyed that you can see the relationship she has with her granddaughter grow through the book, and then how that brings a change to the relationship with her daughter. This is a wonderful book of women bonding and reminded me of another group of women in literature...the Yayas!
Will be posting this week on my IG feed (@flowersfavouritefiction) in a fun way.
This was a 3.5-4 star for me. It had all the gossipy news about a cheating husband and a woman who had been a doormat her whole marriage. I found the change and growth of Nancy, beautiful. And I hated Roger from his first snarky remark.
Books like these are fun summer reads and easy to bring on a vacation to let you dig into someone else’s life dramas. Perhaps maybe picking up some tips on how to stand up for yourself along the way.
Thank you @alcove for the gifted copy in return for an honest review! It was an easy read and perfect for fans that love Elin Hilderbrand or Nancy Thayer then you’ll love it.
This is a laugh out loud book with plenty of fun with a croup of friends. One cheating husband lead to the whole story as it developed page by page. I didn't want to put this down as the characters came to life, yes they were older but it shows that ladies can still have a fun life. This is a 5 star novel and one that you could read again.
Thanks to Netgalley and publisher for this early ARC
Beware the mermaids indeed! Nancy bets everything on a sailing race against her rat of a husband. She has something he doesn't though, and that's what makes the difference. Her friends Ruthie, Lois, and Judy, along with her granddaughter, become her crew after she teaches them how to sail. Not an impossible dream to beat a professional crew with a big deal boat, is it? Not for these women. This is not about sailing, it's about friendship and finding your center. These are mature women who reach outside their comfort zones to help one another. Thanks to Netgalley for the ARC. There's humor, there's fun, there's suspense, it's a good read.
I don’t know what it is, but this book was so inspiring, not only were the characters so fun, and hilarious, they are also strong women, motivated, and all because they are older doesn't mean that they cant start all over again and pursue their passions. Nancy’s husband Roger cheats on her, shes alone for the first time in ages, shes coming to her own, and with the help of her amazing best friends, I am seriously in love with them, she decided to get a boat and live in it. This woman is doing things that she wouldn’t normally do, but she did it. She slowly starts to find herself again, and it’s amazing to see. This book gave me some Golden Girls vibes, older women starting again, and living the life they were always meant to live.
Thanks Netgalley and the publishers for giving me the opportunity to read this book. This book is a great feel-good summer read.
Beware the Mermaids by Carrie Talick is a fun and wonderful book about women getting revenge. Nancy Hadley catches her husband with another women on their sailboat. Nancy let him know she wants a divorce and the sailboat. The couple agrees to race for the boat. Nancy gathers her females friend and they prepare for the race. I highly recommend this book, looking forward to reading more books by this author.
I received a complimentary copy of this book. Opinions expressed in this review are completely my own.
What a fun read! I was fully immersed onto this sailing adventure, wish I was there. A lot of the characters were a hoot, even the animals. A good story about finding that you can accomplish anything if you just believe it. Will make a good book club discussion. Looking forward to more from this author.
After discovering her husband in a compromising position with another woman on their sailboat, Nancy sticks it to him. She wants a divorce and their sailboat! Her no good, cheating, philandering husband will go to any length to contest the divorce, but make it to where Nancy will have to crawl back to him-you know for money and she just can't live without him.
If I was playing a record right here, this would be the part where you would here the famous record scratch.....sooooo, you know where I'm headed with this review, right?
Nancy figures out Roger's game trying to make it difficult for her to make it on her own, so she fights back! Nancy has 4 life long friends and a granddaughter that has her back and willing to help her win! Calling themselves The Mermaids. Ooohhhh, this book is good!
This book is an inspiring book of women coming together and what they can accomplish together.
Thank you to Netgalley and Alcove Press for the ARC in exchange for an honest review.
Very difficult to "get in to"- I feel like the storyline and characters fell flat and were unable to engage the reader.
An inspiring book of women coming together and what they can accomplish. When Nancy discovers her husband has been having an affair, she leaves him, and he sets out to destroy her. Her friends come together, and they teach her survival skills, of money, credit cards, finding a place to live, and moving forward in her life.
Every time she moves forward, her husband tries harder to destroy her.
This is a story of lessons to learn, fighting for the life you think you deserve, and surviving the changes and all that her husband is doing to her. Her 14-year-old granddaughter taught her a lesson all teenagers know, everything changes, and it is how you think about them that makes the difference, and she taught her grandmother to think a little different and get what she truly wanted.
This contemporary fiction novel is so easy to read and one feel's like these ladies could be your friends. A 57 year old woman, Nancy, discovers her husband is having an affair on their magnificent yacht and she decides she has finally had enough. She sets out on her own with the help of her friends and begins her own journey to find her true self again. Can Nancy make it without the support of her husband? She is determined to put him in his place by buying her own yacht and proving both to herself and her husband, that she can do it.
A funny, fast paced story that keeps the reader's attention by incorporating dialogue between the characters and their lives. Nancy has a wonderful support group that includes 3 of her closest friends and they dub themselves the Mermaids! I wanted to be a part of the "Mermaid" club!
A really enjoyable read. Thanks to #netgalley and #alcovepress
With thanks to #Netgalley and #AlcovePress for an ARC of #CarrieTalik #BewaretheMermaids, in return for an honest review.
After being together for over 30 years, Nancy catches Roger doing the dirty on her, and to add insult to injury, he’s doing it on Bucephalus, their sailing boat, which is their pride and joy.
Nancy has had enough and wants a divorce. Roger isn’t willing to play fair.
A battle commences and with the unwavering support of her best friends, Nancy sets out to keep a hold of the things that matter most.
This book oozes with the warmth and strength of female friendships. It made me laugh, and i was thourghly rooting for Nancy from the start.
A great read.

First things first…this cover is everything! I love it! I’m a big believer in judging books by their covers and when I saw this cover, I was sold. When I read the synopsis of this book, it confirmed the belief that I needed to read this book. I really enjoyed the story that is told in Beware the Mermaids. There are some heavy topics addressed in this story, however it was all balanced with a light banter and witty one liners thrown in all through the story. I found myself laughing out loud numerous times throughout the book. I loved watching Nancy as she broke through a situation where she had been held back and watching her thrive in the water as she found her way in this new life. This was a great story!
I loved this book! It’s a fantastic, refreshing read. The ending was so exciting, I was holding my breath, hoping, hoping, that it would end the way it should. I loved all the characters in the story, except vile Roger. He deserved to be ran over by a sailboat. The mermaids were a sassy group of ladies who formed a tight bond of sisterhood and kinship. Nancy comes to grips with the voids in her life and truly begins to sail free. I had a huge crush on Santiago and would gladly sail anywhere he set the course. There are several funny scenes that involve a thermostat and also pelicans with some great sentences in other scenes that had me laughing. Slip on your boat shoes and sail into Beware the Mermaids.
Absolutely loved this fun read. I want to ditch everything and live on a sailboat. I love books with strong women and strong friendships. Every woman should hope for friends who stick with you and support you like the ones in this story. A great summer read.
