I enjoyed this book more than I expected to! I found that it was a little slow at first and it took several chapters for me to feel invested in the story and the characters, but once I realized Diana's intentions and the connection between her and Daisy, I enjoyed it a lot! I think I could've done without Beatrice's chapters. Although I understand that they were intended to show how these issues can affect generations, I found Beatrice to be kind of annoying, and I don't always love teen POVs written by adult authors because it can feel a little disingenuous--although I did love the little reference to Big Summer in her first chapter! My only other issue was that it felt a little heavy-handed with the references to the Me Too movement. I think the story may have hit harder without the overt references to Harvey Weinstein and Matt Lauer, instead relying only on Diana's story.
Daisy Shoemaker and Diana Starling form an unexpected friendship after a series of misdirected emails. Daisy, a suburban mom feeling unfulfilled, and Diana, a successful businesswoman, discover their lives are more intertwined than they initially thought.
Such a fun read! Loved this one!
Many thanks to the author, the publisher, and NetGalley for my ARC.
Jennifer Weiner somehow knows how to write characters that are just hard not to love, and the flaws make these characters that much more loveable. That Summer was a little hard to follow for me and at times, it felt like it was going in too many directions. Once I finally felt in tune with the book, it was a little easier for me to follow. Some characters were ones that I would love to hang out with in real life while others left something to be desired.
I was very excited to see if I love this book as well as Big Summer. I have to say I found that first half of this book to not flow well, and I spend most the time trying to figure out what the characters have in common or how they connect to each other. I hate when books do that. How they fit together comes out around the half way point of the book. I really enjoyed the last half of the book.
There is a lot about rape, and how man treating woman badly in this book. I wish the first half of this book flow better and was put together differently because I do think the message in this book is very important.
I was very intrigued by this story and how all the characters would be connected which kept me wanting to keep reading. Even though it felt like there were slightly too many characters, I did grow to like most of them and understand their points of view. This book deals with very sensitive topics which I thought the author handled well, however the book was advertised as a fun beach read which could be jarring for some readers.
"That Summer" is a story that beautifully weaves a tale of redemption, revenge, friendship, and forgiveness into a tapestry of love and life. Daisy and Diana are both successful women in the prime of their lives, maintaining very different but fulfilling lives. Daisy is busy raising her teenage daughter on the prestigious Main Line of Philadelphia, while simultaneously managing her cooking business and trying to nourish her fledgling marriage. Diana is a successful career woman in NYC, single and living her best life. When an accidental email sets off a series of events that ultimately leads to the two women meeting up, each woman's lives will be forever changed.
As the women become closer and closer, it becomes clear that their pasts are very much intertwined. Histories and secrets are shared, and one fateful summer on the Cape Cod shore is revisited. It was during "that summer" that a single act of violence had the power to alter both women's lives.....possibly forever. Will a secret be revealed that undoes everything that both Daisy and Diana know to be true?
Jennifer Weiner is a fascinating author to me. She does a nice job of touching on relevant events, but also creating a work of enjoyable fiction in which these events are unearthed and consequences are revealed. Without giving too much away, I will say that this is the case in this novel as well. I appreciated both the topic, as well as the element of suspense that Weiner creates. It was a well done work, and I continue to look forward to Weiner's future topics.
Jennifer Weiner is always a great summer read that touches on more serious themes and this book doesn't disappoint.
Enjoyed Weiner’s new novel. I wish the two characters names were a little more different from one another. I love that Weiner tends to use current real life situations to lead her writing. She has a way with words that make me want to keep reading.
In what originally read like a "grass is always greener" story, Jennifer Weiner introduces readers to two women connected through a similar email address. These two women, divided by class, career, life style, age and so much more will find that they have more in common than either admits. We will see the abrupt changes brought into their lives when violence, commited by someone they trusted, takes over their lives. Weiner is known for the dark subjects she injects into the everyday lives of her characters, bringing attention to prevention causes. These characters are successful and present a take charage attitude. No one would believe they live in fear. Their journey should serve as a clear warning to those who would take advantage of anyone weaker than them.
Always entertaining. Stay up all night because you just need to read another chapter. Then you’re finished and sad because you have to say goodbye to the friends you made in the book.
Always impressed by Jennifer Weiner! That Summer didn’t disappoint!! Womanhood, friendship, and finding your voice in your new era of life. Wonderfully written and timely topics.
How could there be a Jennifer Weiner book that is not a winner? I have been reading her since her debut and have loved everything she has put out since!
Definitely check the trigger warnings for this one before reading. This is a heart wrenching book about how one event can change the lives of multiple people.
I enjoyed reading this and recommending it to patrons - especially those looking for a beach read. It straddled the line between fluff and serious very well.
I loved this book! Thank you for the ARC. Unfortunately, I didn’t realize that I wasn’t leaving reviews on netgalley and was solely sharing on Instagram. My apologies. Huge fan of this author! I actually received the tangible copy. Trying to clean up my netgally account.
I always love all Jennifer Wiener’s books and am always so grateful to Weiner, Netgalley and the publisher for a copy! This one is no exception!! Love it!
I really enjoyed this one. This was classic Jennifer Weiner. I love how she writed believable plus size heroines who may not start out but always end up comfortable in their own skin - it's very affirming for plus size women like myself. 4 stars!
Still like Jennifer Weiner a lot, but this one was not a success. My only explanation is someone told her she HAD to write a #metoo novel but she only had 20 minutes to come up with a plot.
This book was suspenseful and passed the time just fine for a summer read. Cape Cod was featured beautifully and I really felt for Daisy throughout the book.
