I received an ARC from the publisher via NetGalley and am voluntarily posting a review. All opinions are my own.
Men Are Frogs is the second in the Fairy Godmothers, Inc. series. It can be read as a stand-alone, although the first one is also pretty enjoyable, if only for the connected thread of the mischievous, meddling fairy godmothers.
The fairies in this one are up to more of their usual shenanigans. And while the first one felt more like it was just playing into the fairy tale vibe in general, I liked seeing more specific references, like their experiences with the Frog Prince and the Beast, and why those characters ended up that way in this universe.
And as such, the main couple of this one were more interesting too. Philip’s character is the aforementioned homage to the Frog Prince, and I liked how there was forgiveness between him and the fairies as they tried to help break his curse, and it turns out not to not be as simple as giving him a kiss.
I also really liked Zuri, and felt for her due to the mishaps she’d been dealing with as a wedding planner. I loved seeing her come to believe in love again thanks to Philip and the fairy godmothers.
This is a cute and fun modern spin on fairy tales, and if you’re looking for one that doesn’t take itself too seriously, you’ll definitely enjoy this.
This is a really sweet book and a great follow-up to Fairy Godmothers, Inc., but I will say, I think this would be a bit of a challenge to read as a standalone if you haven't read the first book! Both have a very unique writing style to them that takes some getting used to, and starting with the first book would be like being thrown into the deep end of this magical world! So if you're thinking of reading this book but haven't read FGI yet, I think you'll get more out of it if you go back and start there!
There were a lot of things I loved about this story. We're back in Ever After with familiar characters, and Zuri (and her sister, Zeva) are a wonderful addition to this world. I loved the enchanted castle and the premise, but where this fell short for me was the chemistry between Zuri and Phillip. It felt very superficial and very love at first sight. Which I understand as far as the fairytale aspect of it, but I would have loved to see them grow a bit more with it and form those deeper connections. Still, it was a sweet and enjoyable summer read!
I looked for this book on Netgalley immediately after finishing Fairy Godmothers Inc., the first book in the series, because it was just so much fun to read! Saranna DeWylde is a magical genius, to craft such delightful stories. They are like fairy tales for adults, fun and magically delicious, with a sprinkle of pixie dust and just the right amount of spice! She also slips in hilarious allusions to many of the fairy tales we grew up with and the moral lessons of a true fairy tale, which are delivered in such a soft and gentle way that you could almost blink and miss them.. heartfelt messages such as the fairy godmothers embracing their aging bodies as they are, eating and wearing what you love (along with delectable descriptions), and being yourself, embracing all your flaws and dark sides and creating your own Happily Ever After. I haven't found any other author who writes stories like this, they are truly unique and I can't wait to read the next one.
This was a DNF for me. Nothing really wrong with it— just wasn't feeling it. The writing was good I just don’t think I was in the right mood for this kind of book.
Thank you to Netgalley and the publishers for the opportunity to review. All thoughts are my own.
Men Are Frogs by Saranna DeWylde is an adorable, hysterical paranormal romance.
Ever After, Missouri, is a magical small town. Filled with fairy tale characters and creatures, the town refills its magic stores with love. This is the story of Prince Charming and a disillusioned wedding planner, Zuri.
I love Zuri so much, even though sometimes I identify with her insecurities enough it hurts a little. She's very real, and I enjoy that in a paranormal. Prince Charming is obviously charming, although he's also got his flaws. Watching them struggle and fumble towards their HEA is an absolute delight.
Also, the fairy godmothers are snarky and a little bit vengeful, and I adore them.
This is the second book in the series, but I read it alone and it wasn't an issue. It's coming July 27, 2021, but you can preorder it from your favorite #indiebookstore now to have it on release day!
The premise of this fairy tale romance was promising. Zuri's career goes up in smoke when her boyfriend turns out to be the groom in a wedding she planned, causing the bride to tastefully remove her gown at the ceremony and set it on fire. Zuri gets a chance to restart in the magical town of Ever After, which is as detailed and cute as I remember from the first book. The author manages to spin a sugar sweet atmosphere that somehow lands in charming territory rather than in the tacky range.
Despite this welcoming venue, the two romantic leads are a letdown. Zuri is defined by doubts about true love that further the plot but don't include any distinghishing personality characteristics. Philip is trying to break his froggy curse and live happily ever after, but there's nothing individual about him, either.
In addition to the flat characters, the writing style severely limited my enjoyment of the story. Its clunky dialogue doesn't flow naturally, which was especially a problem because it stunted all sense of chemistry readers were presumably intended to garner from banter-y conversation. Instead, the story had instalove vibes because the writing couldn't support a slow build or emotional depth. I especially found the jerky exposition and introductions frustrating to wade through, especially as it kept popping up throughout the book when Zuri learned more about Ever After and its magic. Also, the godmothers have several asides planning their meddling for future books, which only served to detract from the story at hand and slow things down to a nearly criminal degree.
All in all, this book just wasn't for me, largely because the prose itself held me back from enjoying the content of the story, even when such an adorable setting was conjured.
I received an ARC of this book. All I can say is WOW..talk about the fast pace. There is so much magical action in this book – I had problems keeping up but didn’t put it down. It is HEA’s incorporated. It is hilarious and sweet at the same time. It is 2nd in a series of the fairy tale world. It did remind me of a sweeter fluffier version of the Once Upon a Time tv series. It is a very light story with multi-characters looking for HEA’s. The book is based on using the town Ever After as the prime wedding destination spot for couples. It revolves around Fairy Godmothers, Inc who set up the HEA’s for couples. Reading it does bring out the HEA’s children grow up on. I enjoyed this book and will look forward to reading the 1st in the series. I also will put this author on my list for the next one coming out. This book is a way to escape everyday ho-hum and just enjoy reading without dark and deary invading your “realm.” I would recommend this author and based on this book – possibly the series.
Of course, this title captivated me instantly, I mean who does not think men are frogs! With this books clever title, the book equally satisfies the reader through an incredible story.
Fans of fairy tales will enjoy this for the way DeWylde has wound them into her rom-com about Zuri and Phillip. He was cursed 300 years ago and spends his days as a frog. Zuri has come to Ever After to work her wonders with weddings but the last thing she expects is that the Fairy Godmothers will....no spoilers. Some of this felt too twee for me but it's nicely diverse and the characters have big hearts. Thanks to netgalley for the ARC. A very light read for a hot summer day.
Fairy Godmothers, meddling and Sugarcane spirits OH MY!
Saranna DeWylde is back with more hilarity in Men are Frogs the 2nd installment of Fairy Godmothers Inc Series. This series is set in the quirky fairytale town of Ever After, Missouri.
Fairy tail castles, fairy godmothers, dwarves named after beers, birds and mice that liked to sew and of course who can forget about Prince Charming!!
Men are frogs centers around a down on her luck wedding planner zuri who leaves her life in Chicago after a wedding dress goes up in flames and Prince Charming cursed to turn into a frog for courting both Petty and BonBon 300 some years prior.
In Men are Frogs, Zuri and Prince Charming are meddled together from the start in more ways than one. While happily ever afters eventually ensue, it is not in the way one may think. This installment definitely has more steam than the FGI #1, but remains very enjoyable with the sarcasm, banter, and all around familiarity with the characters in the story. I enjoy the relationships in the book both platonic and romance wise, and never have I ever thought I would come around the like an Evil Queen! Another great book by Saranna DeWylde.
This was different…but in a bad way though. At first the fairy tale characters threw me off but by chapter 3 I was fine. Very cute and funny rom com, I also love that the lead character was a WOC.
This is book two of a series that quickly became an automatic “snatch up as soon as I see it available” halfway through book one. There are great feels, romance and sweet friendships… think romantic comedy with a dash of sass. I look forward to seeing where these characters go next.
Philip Charming needs Zuri Davis to lift his curse!
Men Are Frogs is what happens when you mix a disgraced wedding planner Zuri Davis that had accidently dated the prospective groom resulting in the bride burning her wedding dress at the altar with a cursed prince Philip Charming that is a frog by day and human by night in Ever After, Missouri? Philip Charming was a prince that had kissed a lot of women trying to end his curse, but will a new wedding planner kiss a frog after 300 years?
If you love fairy tales, this is the book for you because everything is magic in Ever After with the true love restoring the magic that keeps the town alive! You will laugh at all the things that happen with an enchanted castle, talking animals, an evil queen and a beast trying to remove a curse.
I voluntarily read and reviewed an advanced copy of this book from NetGalley. All thoughts and opinions are my own.
Ready your imaginations for another journey into Ever After! This time our story starts with Zuri Davis, a rumpled wedding planner who is looking for a fresh start with Fairy Godmothers Inc. Zuri has had enough falling for soon to be wedded grooms and unhappily ever afters. When she meets the Prince Charming however; nothing may be able to stop her from falling head over heels for him. Yet, Prince Charming is a frog cursed by one of the fairy godmothers. Will true love from Zuri be able to break the curse? Or will Prince Charming's stubbornness and Zuri's semi believing put a crutch on all things love?
This novel is a sequel to the promising Fairy Godmothers, Inc. by Saranna DeWylde. Readers do not need to read the first novel to understand the plot of the second. Men are Frogs had a beautiful premise and will capture the hearts of anyone who believes in happily ever after endings. I was confused with the innuendos and then charming g rated tale on the next page. I would feel uncomfortable having my middle grade students read this based on the content. This book would be a hit if it either stayed in the family side of things or went to an adult area. This story did hold my attention but I hope for more if there is a third book.
A funny, magical love story about friendship, true love and happily ever after. Can Zuri break the curse that keep Prince Charming as a frog during the day and a man during the night for three hundreds years? They must believe their live is the True Love but can they sacrifice their love to break the curse? Charming
This is the second book in the Fairy Godmothers, Inc. series. I loved it! Such a great concept, residents of the town are fairytale characters, including a lonely part-time prince/frog who needs a kiss from his true love to break his curse. I laughed so hard throughout the book! I can’t wait for the next book in the series! 5 stars.
Thanks to the publisher and NetGalley I received a complimentary copy of this book. Opinions expressed in this review are completely my own.
This cute cover made me think this was going to be a clean romance, but boy was I wrong. In the beginning of the book nothing real was wrong with it, but suddenly it changes to alot of swearing and mentions of sex. I loved the beginning but was disappointed with the rest of the book. Wish the author would have made this book clean.
The story is a four hearts rating since I liked the whole story but not enough to reread. I could share it to people who would love a fast romance. I loved the magical castle who would provide everything, from private places and other stuff. Also, the evil witch in the story was not exactly a villain but a sensitive and misunderstood person. Just because she prefers darker stuff people assume the worst from her. I loved this side character since she is relatable. Not everyone would like to be a princess with their prince. As a whole, it was a fun read with frogs and lots of kisses.
This second addition in the Fairy Godmothers, Inc series is cute, easy read, lots of funny quips and antics, full of romance. It's also a fairytale retelling.....it's not hard to guess which one! ;-)
The characters are fun even down to the evil fairy. The story is a underlying message of believing in yourself, even after you've been humiliated and rejected. I didn't read the first book, so this one can be read as a stand alone, but if you want to follow the story of the little town Ever After, Missouri, then you should probably grab that first book before you read this one!
Thank you to Netgalley, Saranna DeWylde and Zebra Books publishing company for allowing me to read this arc in exchange for an honest review.
*LOTS of strong cursing, so if that's a turn off for you, please be aware of that before picking up this book!
Zuri Davis, wedding planner extraordinaire, has a bit of a problem. The last wedding she planned? Yeah. It didn't go so well. Think cheating bridegrooms and burning wedding dresses. Worse, the bridegroom was cheating on his fiancee with her. She should have known something was off when the groom skipped all of the pre-wedding planning sessions. Now with her reputation in shreds, she's trying to get her mojo back in the town of Ever After, Missouri and Fairy Godmothers, Inc. The town is magical. Perfect for fairy tale weddings. Too bad Zuri doesn't believe in Happily Ever After.
Philip Charming, prince-turned-Bed and Breakfast owner, has a bit of a problem. By day, he's a frog. A fly-chomping, wart-having literal frog. Only the kiss from his one True Love (note the capitalization there) will lift the curse. A curse he well and truly earned some three hundred years ago. But he's changed. Made amends. But he's still never managed to find his one true person. At least, not until Zuri.
Philip is convinced Zuri is the one for him. Zuri is convinced that all men are frogs. Which one is right?

This is an adorable magical modern-day fairy tale retelling of the Princess and the Frog between a woman with a broken heart and a man under a curse. It's a story about healing and discovery. And it's a lot of fun.
A good portion of the fun is due to the town and the side characters. The town of Ever After is like someone shook up a volume of Grimm's fairy tales and shook it out into the mountains of Missouri. The Seven Dwarfs run a bar, there's a bridal boutique called Cinderella and Fella that makes real glass slippers, and of course there are three Fairy Godmothers. I personally loved the Evil Queen, Ravenna, and the Beast, Hunter, the most. They were so fun and such great characters.
Zuri was an interesting heroine. Kind, smart, funny. She's coded as Black (references to Hot combs, hair curling/frizzing when wet, other little things) but it isn't explicitly stated. which I wish it was, but at the same time I did like the little touches. She's a professional who knows her business and is good at organizing. I also liked how she stood up for herself and for her own happiness. She was a good egg.
Philip... oh Philip... He's the Prince Charming that every woman deserves. At least now that he's gotten over himself -- look the curse helped, okay? -- and is trying to be a better man. He's still got failings and foibles but that doesn't make him any less charming (see what I did there?). This guy constantly kept subverting my expectations but in the best possible ways. He's like the Anti-toxic masculinity. I loved him lotsly. And I loved his character arc.
I even found Alec, who is arguably the main human antagonist, to be a good character. In so many other romance novels, he'd be the hero. Here, he wasn't. And it was super refreshing and eye opening as well. I want to delve super deeply into all of the tropes that he hit, but they would be super spoilery. But let's just say I loved where his story arc went too.
This book was fun and funny... a true romantic comedy. I found myself laughing in several places. There were so many good lines. My Ebook was highlighted all over the place. The book is definitely steamy and sexy and is unafraid of using adult language. For me, I loved that. Some readers, may not. The consent was absolutely stellar. Loved it. It was sexy but explicit and it shows that writing consent in romance isn't impossible.
Frankly I really enjoyed this book and I can't wait to read Ravenna's story and Hunter & Zeva's as well.
Five stars.
