I requested the Midnight Library Book Club Kit because I thought the Matt Haig book would be the perfect book club choice. In the spring my book club puts together our reading list for the following summer and fall. Having looked at this book club kit, I can see that I have made the right choice to recommend Matt Haig's The Midnight Library. I discovered that this book club kit offers some nice discussion points for my book club./
This novel is already a great one, so why not to share it with others?
Hence, this book is marvellous and useful for a book club activities.
I read The Midnight Library in 2020 and in preparation for reviewing this Book Club Kit, re-read parts of it to refresh my memory. It's a great book!
The kit includes:
1. A series of 8 comprehensive questions, encouraging discussion and prompting readers to find connections between the book and their own experience.
2. The transcript of a brief interview with author Matt Haig, in which he discusses his influences and inspiration for writing the novel, how his personal experience of anxiety and depression informed his writing and the differences in writing fiction vs. non-fiction.
3. A list of other titles by Matt Haig.
I felt that the questions were well-conceived and would stimulate lively discussion in a book group context, or alternatively prompt thoughtful reflection by an individual reader accessing this kit. Similarly, I found the interview with the author interesting and relevant. I was particularly taken with Haig's thoughts on integrating his skills in writing non-fiction into writing a fictional novel: "[S]ometimes fiction allows you to ... use fantasy as a way of exploring ideas and experiences."
I'd happily recommend this Kit for use by any Book Group looking to stimulate discussion, or for any individual reader who wishes to reflect more deeply on their experience of reading The Midnight Library.
My thanks to the author, Matt Haig, publisher Penguin Random House and NetGalley for the opportunity to consider and review this Book Club Kit.
Matt Haig has been a staple on my shelf for along time but I was hesitant to pick this one up based on a few close friends reviews- but I am so glad I finally got to it. It is a slow, methodical, and beautiful story about life that will stick with me forever.
My book club read The Midnight Library and were excited to discuss it. This book club kit helped us to put form around our discussion and helped us to hit all the points. I loved the questions. One in particular gave insight into why the author wrote the book and his personal history with depression and suicidal thoughts and one of my friends in book club said, “Well now I love the book even more!” As much as we enjoyed the book this kit gave it another layer of depth and helped to frame our discussion rather than simply, “I liked the book,” etc. I would recommend this kit to any book club but also a reader looking for more after reading the book.
This is not the book itself, rather a brief collection of discussion questions to be considered and discussed when this book is read as a book club. A great resource to be tapped,'straight from the author!
I love this book club kit! I downloaded it because I read the book a couple months ago and my book club is reading it next month so I wanted a refresher and ideas for questions to ask. I thought the questions were really thought-provoking! The book wasn't my favorite and I gave it 3 stars, but I gave this kit 4 stars because of the content.
What a unique book! First time to read something by this author but cannot wait to read more. Highly recommend this incredible book!!
I personally wasn’t a big fan of the first 2/3 of the book, the last one did really sit well with me and that made me like this book a lot more
Nora was not the most likeable character, and I constantly had to remind myself that that was what made the ending of the book better, Nora learning how to do things for her, appreciate everything she has in life and taking the initiative to make life better was so therapeutic
these discussion questions pair really well with the book and i enjoyed talking to my friend who has also read about them. 5/5
A modern take on It’s A Wonderful Life. Nora is unhappy- very unhappy. Perhaps unhappy enough not to want to live anymore. Every life is full of decisions, Do we go on a date with this person .., or that one? Even the smallest decisions can change your life.
This novel is for anyone who has questioned the choices they have made - and isn’t that everyone???
As the moderator of a large virtual book club, this is brilliant!! It can be a struggle to coordinate discussions, especially if you are on your own with choosing your questions and discussion prices. This however makes it so easy, and the questions are perfect. It's a book club moderators dream come true!!
Helpful reader's guide to engage with The Midnight Library in a community reads program or other book club.
These are good discussion questions for my book club.
The color of font chosen for the questions though made it hard to read.
the audiobook was less than ten hours long with brilliant narration. the book was quite quotable. however i can't say i was deeply connected with the main character and the alternate lives she gets to experience after stumbling upon the midnight library. overall good but not as impactful as i expected.
The Book Club Kit: The Midnight Library, by Matt Haig, is a great companion piece to help drive the discussion at your local book club. Lots of topics are provided to get the discussions rolling.
I absolutely adore The Midnight Library and always recommend it whenever anyone needs a new read.
This is a great companion to the book to get us thinking even more about our own life choices and what we’ve given up and why.
I can’t wait for Mary’s next book. Great to read an interview with him here.
This was a helpful tool in discussing this book with some friends! I especially appreciated the Q&A with the author. Thank you!
This was an amazing story! I loved the complexity of the main character, and her struggle to find meaning throughout the book. The story developed in a very meaningful way, and it was beautiful to watch her discover the things she loved and what mattered to her.
3.5 Stars!
“Librarians have knowledge. They guide you to the right books. The right words. They find the best places. Like soul-enhanced search engines.”
The story is of Nora Seed, a 35-year-old woman who is unhappy with her life and full of regret. After attempting to commit suicide, she ends up in a parallel state- somewhere between life & death at a place called The Midnight Library. This library is special, not only is her childhood librarian Mrs. Elm there to help guide her, but it’s also filled with thousands of books each one containing different versions of her life. As Nora flips through the books, she is transported to different times and places. Similar to stories like A Christmas Carol, Nora gets to see what her life would be like had she made other choices.
Fiction/ fantasy/ magical realism/ and inspirational all rolled into one. I really liked the message this book was telling. However, in my opinion, the pacing was off. Most of the book felt too long, while the ending seemed rushed.. the author could have told the same story in 100 pages less. But overall an interesting premise and enjoyable read.
Thank you NetGalley and Viking Publishing for sending me a copy!
