This book club kit has all of the aspects that I enjoy when using a kit and a few aspects that I hadn't seen before. I really enjoyed how they shared some of the praise that the book received from critics. It was fun to read them and see what we agreed with and what we didn't. Q and A with the author is always a fun aspect to read and the questions and topics were fun to discuss. Lastly I enjoyed the suggested reading page I always enjoy this page as it introduces me to need books and authors.
I am barely getting into Book Clubs and decided I wanted to give it a try. I was looking for book club questions for the Transcendent Kingdom and I am so glad I ran into this one. I just finished reading the book and will be hosting our book club meeting, I looked at the questions posed in the kit and they are great and will definitely make for great conversation with my friends!
Not really what I was expecting. I have gotten other book club kits and felt they were more usable. This one was not for me.
This is such a fun, engaging book club kit! I love reading interviews with authors, and hearing about what inspired them to write their novel. The included discussion questions are perfect for encouraging deeper exploration of the book's characters and themes, the kit is easily printable/accessible and I loved how Netgalley began including on their sites. Will definitely use in the near future with my very own book club.
I used this book club kit to generate discussion with a bunch of my friends who loved this book, and I can assure you that though it is short, it is packed full of interesting thoughts!
This kit is short but packed with important stuff. Interview with author that give us information about background and inspiration that create this book. Bunch of key questions for spark the discussion time in our book club and some recommendations to read next.
Thank you Netgalley for provided my copy.
This book club kit is pretty short, but packs quite a bit in it. It includes lots of quotes from other authors praising the book, a Q&A with Yaa Gyasi, a reading group guide, and list of suggested reading. I wish the kit was a little less cluttered, and I didn't feel the quotes praising the book were needed.
I just finished reading Transcendent Kingdom and was excited to come across these discussion questions and mini-interview with the author. It always helps us to think deeper and understand the material better. I thought the format was a little messy--maybe it's the way it showed up on my Kindle app--but it was still readable and enriched my reading experience.
This book club kit will be very useful for those who are looking to read this book either in a book club setting or even as part of a class. Transcendent Kingdom covers a lot of ground -- racism, sexism, addiction, the opioid crisis, misogynoir, immigration, etc. -- and it is helpful to use this to breakdown all these different elements and discuss them with the attention they deserve. Additionally, having the commentary of Gyasi is also helpful in contextualizing some of the events in the book and choices that she made as a writer.
I loved Transcendent Kingdom and this Book Club Kit gives folks a great guide for discussing the book. I'm excited to suggest my book club reads this book and use the questions from the discussion guide.
I enjoyed hearing about Yaa Gyasi's background and inspiration for the book. I will be checking out the suggested books.
This is a great tool for a book club to discuss Transcendent Kingdom. It has great topics and questions for discussions plus some words from the author. I was just expecting this to be longer.
I requested this book, thinking the actual book would be included in the kit. It is not - it is purely a kit to discuss the contents of the book, with some extras in it.
The kit includes a Q&A with the author, and topics/questions for discussion with the group. Skimming the questions, I saw quite quickly that the questions would spoil the contents of the book for me - which seems to me that the questions can lead to a great in-depth discussion.
I very much liked the list of suggested reading at the end of the kit - what better way to finish a discussion on a book you loved, than to find other, similar books that you will probably love too!
This Book Club Kit will help you to start discussions around the book. It is in the same design as the book. You will also have the chance to read the answers to a conversation with the author Yaa Gyasi. At the end this kit provides a list of further suggested readings.
Interactive and the perfect set up for a new book club! Sparked conversation & focused on the right themes for the novel. A great guiding tool for a book club.
Thank you for this Book Club Kit! I found it to be very interesting and had some great questions and resources. I recommend it to book clubs reading Transcendent Kingdom.
Thank you, NetGalley for this opportunity to share the club kit with my group.
A woman in my book club is a scientist, working with mice, and a women bible study facilitator.
This book opened up heartfelt, and at times, tearful conversations among the 12 of us who read this book. Some of us, in our congregations, have overheard gossip that is hurtful, all of us have experienced loss. Those of us who teach youth have been challenged with the questions/connections between God and science.
Yaa Gyasi, through her unique writing style, opens our eyes and ears and once we get past being a bit uncomfortable, honest conversation flows and the end result is fruitful. Thank you again.
Gifty is a fifth-year candidate in neuroscience at Stanford School of Medicine studying reward-seeking behavior in mice and the neural circuits of depression and addiction. Her brother, Nana, was a gifted high school athlete who died of a heroin overdose after a knee injury left him hooked on OxyContin. Her suicidal mother is living in her bed. Gifty is determined to discover the scientific basis for the suffering she sees all around her.
Transcendent Kingdom is a deeply moving portrait of a family of Ghanaian immigrants ravaged by depression, addiction, and grief--a novel about faith, science, religion, and love. Exquisitely written, emotionally searing, this is a compelling follow-up to Gyasi's phenomenal debut.
This book was interesting to me as someone who is in healthcare and has a strong science background. I really enjoyed the parts of her research and how it connected to her life. I did are for the main character, but I was taken aback by how religious this book was. I can respect her spiritual journey and her life in a whole. All around, I really enjoyed this book.
A lovely resource for anyone who runs a book club, full of thoughtful questions as well as a Q&A. The illustrations were a wonderful addition.
I didn't realise this was not in fact the book, and have yet to read it. But the kit looks very useful, especially the "further reading" list at the end.
