This kit is so inventive! I usually only think of discussion questions when I think of a book club kit. This had so much more! I loved the author’s detailed explanation of the background of the location. There was also such interesting information about the disappearance of gothic novels. That alone could easily spark a ton of conversation. Add in the Spotify play list and the paper dolls and now this kit has become a MUST for reading groups discussing Mexican Gothic.
Absolutely loved this! I used the kit in our online book group and we all thought the questions are well thought trough and relevant to the story.
We had a discussion about the book before hand and now we did a new discussion based on the kit. Really wonderful to see we went far deeper into the book than in our first discussion.
I loved this !!! I run an Online book club on Facebook called Between The Covers, so this was absolutely perfect for discussion. I also liked the playlist and the images at the end reminded me of paper dolls I used to play with. Very cute.
I'm annoyed that there wasn't any info saying this kit did not include the novel. All the kits I know include the novel.
Nevertheless, I finished the book. Coming to the kit, it was interesting to know that the story is based on irl events and the place. I also loved reading the piece on how Gothic Romance fizzled out and how it blossomed the present day Domestic Noir.
The discussion questions could've been better. I have yet to try the playlist and all the illustrations of the dresses were just how I imagined them!
This will be an awesome edition to ultimately take my obsession to the next level. This was just for me but it will definitely enhance my reading experience.
I’m super excited for this!
Pros: Although Mexican Gothic is very popular with readers, is was not one of my favorite books. When I saw this book club kit on NetGalley, I was interested to read the discussion questions and see what else was included in the kit. I really enjoyed reading the author's letter to readers and wished I had known this background when I read the book. The playlist and paper dolls are unique things that I haven't seen in a book club kit before--what great ideas! I loved seeing the clothing imagined for Noemi. When I chose to read Mexican Gothic, it was because gothic novels are one of my favorite genres, and I appreciated that this guide included information about the gothic novel and this author's take on the genre.
Cons: The discussion questions in this kit were pretty surface level. However, the rest of the kit really makes up for the discussion questions.
Thank you Netgalley and publisher for giving me this book kit! This is an extra material about the book "Mexican Gothic", and it covers some historical look from the author, Silvia Moreno-Garcia, some questions that deepen the discussions about the book and an interesting playlist to accompany the reading (so many great songs)!
I really enjoyed this post-addition to the great Mexican Gothic by Silvia Moreno-Garcia. I loved the way she introduced the historical past and tragic events that occurred in the silver mine booming days of Mexico during the occupation of the Spaniards and later the British mining conglomerates. She also did a lot of research on the history of the gothic novel during its various incarnations during the last several decades.. It was a treat for me to read since I loved the book so much, I finished it in one day. The tension and horror in the nove simply built up bit by bit to a resounding climax. My thanks to Net Galley for this wonderful addition to a fantastic novel.
I thought this was a nice enough book club kit. The questions were good for inciting discussion and the Spotify playlist was a great addition. Lovely for playing in the background while hosting your book club or even while reading the book itself. The paper doll dress-up set was also nice, although I don't know how much it would be utilized in actual practice
I love these Book Club Kits! I find them very helpful even though I don't always read the book as part of a book club. It helps me think deeper about the book than I otherwise would have done!! I've also found them useful in the review process because the questions provided spur on additional thought about certain areas of the book.
Thank you for providing this book club kit! This is so much fun, the questions are so interesting, and all the extras are going to be really useful. Can't wait to use this with my book club.
So this was a fun, little addition to this runaway best-seller! I will repeat though, this does NOT include the actual novel. But what a great resource to make reading this book with your book club so much more immersive!
I was not very familiar with these kits, but I really liked the organization of the questions and the layout is very well done aesthetically and for easy reference. This one is extra special with a Spotify playlist and paper dolls with costumes and author essay. Great resource for book clubs or for anyone looking for a fuller, more immersive experience!
It was very interesting thing to read.
Ihaven't read the book yet (Mexican Ghotic) but it was interesting the things the author said about the background of the book.
I hope I can read it soon.
Thank you so much for this ! very nice addition to book club night with the girl! Thanks again so much for making a pulled together kit like this it makes it really simple for discussions.
This is a supplemental material for the book, Mexican Gothic, providing more context for the book. Thank you to the publisher and NetGalley for making this available.
My thanks to the author, publisher and NetGalley for an ARC of this Book Club Kit in exchange for an honest review.
I clicked on this widget thinking it might also contain the book as well. I plan to add this book to my book club's list, even though I had to return the hardcover to my local library before I could finish it.
I laughed when I saw the "Cut Out" dresses for the characters.
There are also a Discussion page with many thought-provoking questions, although my group tends to have no trouble coming up with things to discuss.
A great promotional kit, which I hope I will have the chance to use.
Mexican Gothic lived up to the hype of being a scary gothic horror tale that will have you racing through the entire story to find out what happens next. We follow Noemi as she goes to the Mexican countryside to look in on her newlywed cousin who is not in good spirits, or health. She stays in the gothic mansion that is in complete disarray and soon finds that everything is not what it seems. There is something sinister hiding in the walls around her and everyone in this strange family are hiding a much larger horrifying secret than just the ghost that haunt the space. Something truly evil is living and breathing within this house and it is feeding off the people who are inside. Everyone appears to be the worse examples of themselves, but Noemi is determined to get to the bottom of the strange mystery and save her cousin before it is too late.
Silvia Moreno – Garcia has created a world that is as fascinating as it is horrifying. You can’t help but want to speed through the pages in a fury to find out what happens next while being completed terrified by what is happening around the main protagonists. Silvia’s storytelling is so colorful and detail that you feel like you are living in the house and experiencing the doom and gloom happening everywhere. I found myself reading every chance I had because I had to know what was going to happen next. It was thrilling to have that adrenaline rush from the fear and anxiety you feel with the characters.
Mexican Gothic is a spine-tingling, heart pounding, gothic haunted house tale that will make you sleep with the lights on and see monsters in the shadows. Beware for your eyes may not be playing tricks on you!
I read Mexican Gothic last year and really enjoyed so I was excited to check out this Book Club Kit, which includes a lot of supplemental and background on the history that inspired this novel.
This kit includes:
- A letter from the author, Silvia Moreno Garcia. This was very insightful and gives some helpful background on the mining industry in Mexico that inspired the story!
- Discussion questions. These were pretty straightforward, and I wish they had been a more in depth since this was such a nuanced and complex novel. Still, I think they’re pretty good starting points for a book club discussion.
- A playlist inspired by the novel. Loved this, will definitely be listening to it on Spotify!
- A note from the author on the town of Real del Monte, which inspired the setting of the novel.
- An image of the Doyle family seal.
- A note on the history of gothic romances. Very interesting read if you want to know more about gothic novels and how they've developed and evolved over time!
- A paper doll kit for Noemí. This was really cute, especially since Noemí’s fashion sense plays a large role in the novel. Plus the 1950’s fashion is so cool!
While I would’ve liked more from the discussion questions, the other materials are very interesting and informative. I think this is a great resource for book club discussions or anyone looking to learn more about the story’s background and inspiration!
This book is on my book club list so it will go perfectly! Thank you so much for this! The cut outs look fantastic as well!
