I have been reading this series from the beginning. This was not my favorite. The first in this series had some issues that had been improved in the consecutive books but unfortunately showed up again in this book. There were too many continuity errors, too many instances in which things were impossible, unrealistic, and simply did not add up. This seemed to need a more tightly woven travail to pull it together. I am hoping the next will be more meticulous.
This is the best novel I've read in a very long time - so much fun! Although it is six in the series and I haven't read the other five books, I didn't feel lost. The book was well written with a strong story, full of descriptions that brought me to the island of Charm. I immediately liked Everly and her Tea restaurant. The other characters like her aunts, ex-boyfriend Wyatt, friend and one time date Matt and current love Grady are wonderful characters. The one thing an author can do for me is to bring me into the story by setting up the scenes in a way I can imagine each place. Bree Baker did an excellent job in doing this - so much so that I've done an online search for houses near the beach in North Carolina after reading Partners in Lime. (if only I could move to a place like Charm!) As soon as I finished Partners in Lime I immediately purchased the first in the series and am currently reading it. I'm so thrilled Netgalley brought this author to my attention. In this installment, Everly's friend Matt is accused of murdering an old professional acquaintance who ends up even more tangled in Matt's life than it first appears. Everly does everything she can to investigate (whether Grady wants her to or not) so she can clear Matt's name. This book has so many great elements including a mysterious blogger who seems to know Everly's every move. I love the people of Charm and I love this series! I am adopting this book to my curriculum and recommending it highly!
I always enjoy this series with the likable characters and great setting on the Outer Banks of North Carolina. In this return to Charm, Everly Swan, tea shop owner, is providing snacks for a play rehearsal for The Lost Colony, when her friend Matt is heard arguing with a celebrity surfer Kai who later winds up dead. Matt is in the play and a longbow is a prop for his character and he is proficient in using it. An arrow from the props is later found in Kai's back. All clues point to Matt's guilt but Everly is determined to prove he is innocence. This is another great mystery with suspense, action, and a pool of suspects, including an unhappy wife, a manager, other surfers, sponsor, and more. And this is another time of me wanting to put my hands over my eyes as Everly sticks herself in situations that is her usual nosy, embarrassing methods. Ha! Her boyfriend, Detective Grady Hayes, tries to keep her safe but arrows keep showing up. There is a new tea shop in town but will it impact Everly's business? Time will tell. This story really amps up near the end with a stressful event and leaves a wee bit of unfinished business that makes me wish the next story would hurry up and release.
I received a complimentary ARC from Poisoned Pen Press and NetGalley. All thoughts and opinions are mine only.
I really enjoy this fun cozy mystery series. This author is prolific and writes other cozy mysteries under different names and I have enjoyed all of them. this was a great entry to the series and I am looking forward to the last in the series next year.
I love Bree Baker. I have read all the stories in this series. Oh my goodness! I need to know more, can’t wait for the next book to come out!
I loved this installment, had just the right amount of intrigue, suspense, and even romance. I am so sad that the series ends soon. I wish the publishers would change their minds.
As I have said before one of my favorite things about the books is the sense of family, friendship, and how the community comes together. This time was no different, Everly tries to clear Matt of Murder by asking questions that land her in hot water with Grady. I just love all the characters and could totally see them in a hallmark mystery on tv.
I highly recommend this series to all my cozy mystery-loving friends
I grew up in Florida, and though I hated the heat, I love visiting beach towns in cozy mysteries. I especially enjoy Everly on Charm Island and her iced tea shop. This is a great escape cozy with a tricky, twisty plot, quirky characters, and plenty of emotion.
Review copy provided by the publisher via Netgalley in exchange for an honest review.
I really enjoyed reading this book. It was an enthralling cozy mystery with believeable characters and a quaint small beach town setting. This is my first Everly Swan mystery, and I look forward to reading more. I highly recommend this book to other cozy mystery readers.
Mystery novels are my go-to when I’m looking for a quick read. Cozy mysteries are even better at filling these gaps in my reading. This book definitely falls into that category. It is also part of a series, and I have not read the earlier installments. I came into this book unfamiliar with the characters and setting.
Author Bree Baker does a great job of setting up character and setting in a way that catches the reader up on the series without over-explaining (for the most part). If you start with book 6 like me, you won’t feel lost at sea. The only thing I can think of that might be spoiled by reading out of order is the romantic element.
The main problem I had with characterization in this novel is the focus on the protagonist’s weight and size. Granted, many women’s thoughts focus on their body size and weight (which is a big cultural issue that I have a lot of problems with), but I felt adding those details in did nothing to help me better know the character of Everly Swan. The size of her pants has no bearing on the plot of the novel, the course of her romance, or the success of her business. It could have very easily been left out. The references left this narrative feeling a little out of touch in our current “body positive” or “health at any size” cultural movements.
That said, I enjoyed this book for the fun, quick read it is. The mystery itself was enough to keep me reading, and I enjoyed the relationships that were established throughout the book. Don’t open this book hoping for a deep, thought-provoking read. Take it for what it is and enjoy the cozy ride through the Outer Banks.
This is a great summer cozy mystery that features Everly Swan and friends.
The mystery is solid and I enjoyed most of the characters.
I will be looking forward to the next book.
Thank you to NetGalley and the publisher for selecting me to read an advanced copy of this book.
The sixth book in the Seaside Mystery Series with central character, Everly Swan. Everly is from a family who is purported to have some mystical powers and a curse that says if she leaves the town of Charm and loves a man he is in mortal danger. In books leading up to this one, Everly has dated several men and now she has developed a stronger relationship with head of the town's law enforcement, Grady. Their relationship is put to the test when Everly's friend, a former boyfriend, Matt is accused of having killed a man with a crossbow.
As Grady does his job, Matt looks more and more guilty, and Everly, who is convinced of his innocence get more and more angry as Grady follows the evidence. Turns out, Matt and the man have a history, does that play into his death or is someone trying to frame Matt?
The book is filled with surfers who have come to the Outer Banks for an exhibition along with the regular residents of Charm who are probably well known by readers of the series. As things move from bad to worse, Everly risks alienating Grady as she seeks to find the real killer and exonerate Matt.
Readers of the series will enjoy getting caught up with the relationships that form secondary storylines. While this mystery stands alone, thee may be some information and relationships that are on-going that will be better enjoyed if the reader has read at least some of the books earlier in the series.. For followers of the series, this will be another enjoyable chapter in Everly's life, along with a number of other regular characters.
My thanks to Poisoned Pen Press and NetGalley for providing me with an advance copy for review. The opinions expressed here are entirely my own.
I've read and enjoyed every single title in Bree Baker's Seaside Café Mystery series, and I couldn't wait to dive into the newest. This installment included each and every element I've come to love about this series, and features a well rounded mystery that kept me guessing from the get go.
Perhaps my favorite part of picking up this series is the strong sense of family and friendship that is always heavily portrayed, and this installment was no exception. Grady and Everly are finally officially a couple, but a wrench is about to be thrown into everything when a pro surfer is murdered, and Everly's friend Matt is the prime suspect. Grady wants Everly nowhere near the murder, but how can she sit back and do nothing when one of her closest friends is being accused of a crime he couldn't have possibly committed.
I loved getting another visit to Charm, and I enjoyed the tea shop, the many secondary characters that have started to feel like old friends like Everly's aunts Clara and Fran, Denise, Amelia, Ryan, etc., the budding romance between Everly and Grady, Everly's persistent and pesky fitness bracelet, and her many convo's with good old Lou and Maggie.
I have to say that certain events near the ending had me gasping out loud, and the way this one ends has me slightly panicking that I have to wait months for the next book release.
Overall, I really adored this title, and thought it was another great addition to the series. My only complaints would be that I didn't think the secondary characters, other than Matt and Grady, played much of a part in this one, and also, I thought some of Everly's antics were a bit over the top and didn't seem quite as believable as they had in previous books.
Regardless, it was still a great read and a great addition to the series, and I will anxiously be awaiting book seven.
Final Rating: 4/5.
Thanks so much to Poisoned Pen Press for allowing me to advance read and review this!
I voluntarily read and reviewed a complimentary advance reader copy of this novel from the publisher in exchange for an honest review. I was not required to give a positive review. All thoughts and opinions are my own.
Great series and author. Bree baker also known as Julie Anne Lindsey is one of my favorite authors and if you haven't read this series yet I highly recommend doing so. I also suggest reading her books in order
A great summertime cozy mystery. I love the cover! As a fan of iced and sweet tea, I wish Everly's shop was real and nearby. Yum!
I received this book for free for an honest review from netgalley #netgalley
She is one of my favorite cozy writers and her latest book Partners in Lime did not disappoint. The cover art is fantastic too. The setting is one of my favorite things about cozy mysteries and I love the beach setting. I'm addicted to tea so this series always makes me want to try something new and fun :)
I appreciate the publisher allowing me to read this book. I liked the mystery of the plot though I was not fond of some of the characters.
Another great addition to the series! Well developed characters. Great plot that keeps your attention. Set in a town that I so want to visit! Loved it. Please keep them coming ❤ Thanks #netgalley and #PoisonedPenPress for the eARC in exchange for an honest review. All opinions are mine.
I discovered this series a couple of months ago and I fell in love! Everything about this series is perfect for me- the characters, the setting, the relationships and the mysteries. Cozy mysteries are my go to genre and this series is the best!
Come on in Y'all and enjoy a fast paced and well crafted mystery in the town of Charm, in the Outer Banks.
Everly is enjoying life running her beachside iced tea shop. Her Aunt Fran has been elected Mayor of Charm and her relationship with Detective Grady Hays is heating up. The latter thanks to the fact there has been no reason for her to use her amateur sleuthing skills in the past several months.
That is all about to change when a pro surfer who is town is found dead and her her friend, and town EMT, is a suspect. Everly is going to help her friend in spite of Grady's objections to her meddling in his cases.
This is fast paced and a well crafted mystery. I love all the characters in this series and their relationships with each other. We get to find out more about EMT Matt's past, a surprise for Amelia and a vintage yellow VW but named Dharma.
Whenever I read one of them, I feel like I am returning to town full of old friends. Ms. Baker needs to write faster, I can't wait for the next one! LOL
This is the 6th book in the series but can easily be read as a stand alone.
I requested and received an Advanced Readers Copy from #Poison Pen Press and #NetGalley in return for an honest review.
I have read all the books in this serious and dutifully wait for the next one. This one certainly did not disappoint.
Everly Swan just cannot help getting involved in murder investigations. This puts a strain on her relationship with Charm's detective and boyfriend, Grady Hayes. This time a famous surfer is murdered and Everly's friend Matt is the prime suspect. Everly's curiosity propels her to get involved and her determination grows as the evidence against Matt piles up. Can she solve the murder before she winds up in another dangerous situation?
These books always make me feel happy. I would love to visit Everly's historic home and darling tea shop. I base a lot of how much I like cozies on if I would want to befriend the main character and I would love to be friends with this one, her aunts and the other supporting characters in the book. This one hit me right in the feels.
I strongly recommend NOT starting with this book if you have not read the earlier books in the series, as a lot of the plot builds on previous books and it makes the emotional impact more significant if you know the history of the characters. Plus, I hope you will be delighted to visit Charm and catch up on the previous stories.
I am raving about this book but why the four stars? I thought some of the tactics Everly employs throughout the story were just a little too ridiculous. I can understand people speaking to a tea proprietor and town hangout but I almost felt that sometimes Everly's quest for information was intrusive and obnoxious, so I am docking one star.
That does not mean I do not hope for many, many more books in this series! I hope to see another one soon!!
The sixth book in the Seaside Cafe cozy series was charming as usual. Partners in Lime is as quaint as the pervious five, can stand alone but the others give context to the well developed characters. Bree Baker has this series on lock and I can’t wait for more.
