This endearing picture book captures the spirit of true book lovers and lifelong readers. The main character creates a library with one foot in reality and practicality and another in her wildest imagination, filled with giants, dragons, and fairies. Excellent choice for school librarians and public librarians alike for storytime; pair with an activity where children design their own libraries and collections.
So You Want to Build A Library is a children’s book written by Lindsay Leslie.
Summary: What could be better than building a library? Nothing! Making it the best library ever? Well, that’s the challenge…..and it’s going to be fun!
My Thoughts: I am a sucker for books about books and libraries (two of my favorite things), so this story already started off on a good note for me. The book is fun, clever, imaginative, and I literally chuckled out loud a few times.
The only thing I didn’t care for was the color palette. There is lots of yellow, paired with peach, paired with teal-it’s kind of strange.
Otherwise though, I did truly enjoy this book and would buy it. It would also make a great gift for any book-loving/library-loving kid!
I would like to thank Capstone for providing me with a free digital copy of this book in exchange for my honest review. Thank you!
This was such a cute short story for a younger audience. Each page built on the last in creating a fantasy library made of fictional characters, exaggerated ideas, and impossible staircases. It was absolutely perfect in every way. This is perfect for a new reader. It was clearly not meant to be a linear story of what one really needs to do to "build a library" but instead a fatastical cute approach that my 6 year old quite enjoyed.
The bold colors and dramatic illustrations gave so much depth to the story as did the use of various story book characters.
So You Want To Build a Library is silly and fun, with bright colors and larger than life characters. This fast-paced book felt a bit rushed, and somewhat squished into the storybook format at times, but remains a solid read and a great way to get kids thinking about libraries are amazing and magical places.
Review: A fun story with colorful illustrations that encourages children to imagine what their perfect library would include. Whimsical characters, including a knight in shining armor, a giant, and several fairies, will delight readers.
Note: I received a free copy of this ebook from the publisher via NetGalley. My review is my own.
So You Want To Build a Library?
I do!
You will be inspired to, and kids will be, too, after reading this delightful book. With an appeal for girls, boys and grown-ups alike, this story makes the reader dream of what their own library could be like with the help of fun characters and the perfect chair-and maybe a sundae bar among your favorite books! Will be adding to home, grandchildren and school libraries. And in my storytime pile!
I requested this book because of the title. I used to want to become a librarian, and reading the excerpt I thought my daughter would love it. This story was adorable and creatively written. The illustrations were beautiful and silly at the same time. My daughter was laughing for most of the book and asked me to read it again.
It's a very nice book for children, I found myself smile with every Page, it's really good for every child to Know that library is like a treasure for her owner.
This picture book will allow your imagination to take flight as you imagine the chance to build your own library. The author goes on a whimsical ride in imagining what would be possible if you were able to build your own library. The illustrations only add to the creativity of the book.
As a teacher, I would recommend this book as a read aloud in your classroom. It would be perfect for any librarian as well. I would read this to any class, especially before their first trip to the library for the school year. What a fun read!

I read this on my own while waiting in the car. I can’t wait to get home and read it with my children, teens and near-teens though they are. What a fun book to begin a discussion of “what kind of library/city/school/house would YOU build?” The illustrations are bright and playful, adding ideas galore to the words.
My 6 year old son's review: "I want to build a library too! With a comfy chair and so many books and lots of snacks!"
My review: I thought this was a really cute story. It was everything a child imagines a library to be and I especially loved the added touch of all the story book characters helping to build the library. The words in all capitals added a necessary emphasis. The story also had all those perfectly bright colors that attract little eyes which I really loved.
This is such a fun colorful book! Such vibrant colors were chosen, and I really enjoyed the simplicity of the pictures and story. This book had diverse characters, and this book is the perfect book for any booklovers child!
Fun, entertaining story!
Books for her.

As a reading teacher whose ambition is to get kids to love reading, I think this is such a wonderful book! It gives the opportunity for kids to imagine creating their own library and/or cozy reading space. I love how the illustration adds so much cute and interesting details to the story. Can’t wait to get a copy for my classroom!
So You Want To Build a Library is a wonderful little book that makes my Librarian heart so happy! I enjoyed reading this and loved the illustrations.
Thank you NetGalley and Capstone Editions for this ARC!
This is such an adorable book to get kids excited for the library and to have them train their imaginative muscles.
This children's book is certainly lively and the title immediately appealed to both my children and I as we really enjoy reading. While my kids enjoyed the active nature of the book, I thought it was a bit too stimulating. I noticed they did get distracted at some points. I did not care for the second person narration and the writing itself wasn't especially unique. Instead of conveying why one would want to build a library, it seemed to excessively focus on everything they would add to the library that was not books, which wasn't what I was expecting. The story was still cute and entertaining enough, but it wouldn't be a book I would purchase for our home library.
If you love books when you were very young, you probably enjoyed going to the library and getting more books. Maybe even dreamed of having your own library to organize and share your books with others.
What does it take to build a library? This colorful illustrated book on the love books and reading will stir up the imagination of your child. A enjoyable book to read!
A special thank you to Capstone and Netgalley for the ARC and the opportunity to post an honest review

Who doesn't want to build a library? Especially with a dining room table and little brother?
