Cute children's book on a little boy growing a pumpkin to take to the fair, decorate and the regatta. My kids enjoyed it and I learned something new too. I wasn't aware of the pumpkin regatta in Oregon, so it was interesting to learn more about it at the end of the book.
Sometimes you find a book that is a gem! And this is definitely one of them!
I did not know about the pumpkin contest in Ontario Canada and so I appreciated the author's note in the end about it.
This book read like verse and I love love love when a children book effortlessly manages to do that. Stunning illustrations as well!
Thank you Netgalley for this copy in exchange for an honest review.
As I was reading this book, my primary thought was that it would be a great text for preschool classrooms studying pumpkins, fall, or plants.
Have you ever planted a pumpkin seed? And let it grow? What did you do with your pumpkin? Read this delightfully surprising book by Mary Ann Fraser to discover what the young boy in the story does with his pumpkin! I think most listeners will be happily amazed!
I liked that the story employed the repetitive phrase, "Oh no!". And also appreciated the pumpkin growing history and facts included at the end of the story. This would be a great addition to a story time or class unit about gardening or pumpkins. It is appropriate for a wide range of ages -- anyone that is interested in planting a pumpkin seed and watching it grow!
Thank you to Net Galley and the publisher for a preview of this book. I really enjoyed it!

What a charming, lovely book about growing plants from seeds! As an outdoor educator I am always looking for books about planting, growing, harvesting, or any other aspect of maintaining home and community gardens. This will be a wonderful addition to our eco-educational library. I did not read any synopsis ahead of time, and therefore was surprised and entertained by the unusual twist at the end. I won’t give too much away, but I will say there is a use for pumpkins I had never heard of! This small piece of Ontario heritage will make a wonderful combination of storytime and lesson. I am always glad to add books to our learning library that reflect a diversity of students.
This was a cute picture book about growing large pumpkins which are used in boat races - I had no idea until the end of the book that it was leading up to that or that this tradition exists in Ontario! The idea of the pumpkin boat races is really interesting, and I appreciated some of the additional information about it and the photos at the very end to give some real world context,
I loved the story of how the kid growing the pumpkin was just going to keep letting the plant grow, even though it could have been used for so many other purposes along the way, so it could be used for the boat race.
This picture book was an adorable look into the life of a pumpkin seed. It is planted, grown into a flower, then a small fruit, and then a large fruit. However, instead of being scooped out for a jack-o-lantern or made into pie, the pumpkin is taken to a fair and then made into a boat. This was a really interesting and informative look into the history of giant pumpkins, which I had no idea had a whole culture around them, so children will find it even more interesting. The themes of caring and nurturing also translated well and the art style is perfect for it.
Based on a real tradition of growing and racing giant pumpkins in Ontario, this book will teach kids about the life cycle of a pumpkin and a fun tradition as well.
Why was this so precious? There are a few illustrated books that just completely hit me out of the blue and I flipped through this with my younger cousin (she's 4) and she really enjoyed this! She kept leafing through the different illustrations and wanted to go pumpkin picking (yes, I nearly burst into tears as well). Absolutely recommend this cute story!
Initially, I thought that this book would just be about gardening or the science behind plant growth. However, this book has a lot more to offer. Young readers will benefit from its beautiful illustrations, educational content, life lessons, and encouragement. I would suggest this for a classroom or even an after-school program that's focusing on gardening skills.
Review: An educational story for children about the timeline of a pumpkin from a seed to a flower to a pumpkin (and beyond!). The storyline is written in an inquisitive manner with stylish graphics, but giving factual information along the way. Additional information is included after the story, along with some real-life photos and pumpkin factoids that are sure to make learning fun!
Note: I received a free copy of this ebook from the publisher via NetGalley. My review is my own.
As a mom of 5 yrs old, I prefer a book which can introduce something new to him but at the same time, it would make him fit for the world we are approaching. It was easy to read. And this is the perfect bedtime read for any kid. It shows how plants grow. It introduces the basics of gardening to the children. The illustrations are bright and perfect. I have no idea that there was a pumpkin race conducted every year until I read this book. After reading this book my kid wants to explore that idea with all the fruits and vegetables
Given that this was a book about growing plants, I thought I had a pretty good idea where the plot was going. To my surprise, it took a joyful turn and taught me about an unusual local tradition, which made it a very satisfying book. It's always fun to find a short playful stories that takes unexpected directions.
This is a lovely story of being patient with gardening and appreciating the pumpkin process without rushing straight to making pumpkin pie or eating the seeds or getting disappointed when you don't win a competition.
And yet, now all I want is pumpkin pie *hungry noises*
And oh my gosh, how did I not know pumpkin racing was a thing?? This is the best thing EVER! There's an information section at the back of the book that tells you about the pumpkin races in Nova Scotia, and I'm stunned that I never knew about them cos I lived in Nova Scotia for a time. Add see pumpkin boat race to my list of things to do next time I can get back to Canada.
This is a great book with beautiful illustrations! The story line is wonderful and shows the many things we can do with seeds. I like the connection to real photos at the end. My children enjoyed this story and I will recommend to others with kids!
This is about a boy who grows a giant pumpkin to take to fair. Along the journey questions are asked about the different thing that are intended for the pumpkin. This introduces the different things that could be done with the pumpkin along with way. It has information at the end with lots of facts.
I love the ideas for if the boy doesn’t win the contest. They are very imaginative. This would be a great book to add to your Halloween reads or even an elementary school pumpkin lesson plan. For those looking for diversity, this book would be great!

Thanks to NetGalley for the ARC of this book.
Read and reviewed by seven-year-old Amy.
Someone got a pumpkin seed. Someone Else asked if he could eat the seed. Someone said that he would let the pumpkin seed grow. But does Someone Else eat the seed, or does it grows into a plant? Read the book to find out. 😊
The book is very easy to read, and I read it within 5 minutes. The illustrations were very colorful and attractive.
I learned the life-cycle of the plant. Also, different things we can make with the pumpkin.
I recommend this book for children three years and older.
Pumpkins are an in-demand topic every fall. Librarians and teachers know that it's hard to keep enough fall books on hand and this title will soon become a favorite among fall books. The story is just right for preschool and kindergarten readers and they will enjoy chiming in on the refrain. Readers will be fascinated by the idea of a pumpkin regatta. This will also be a nice title for the spring when classes are working on sprouting seeds. Sure to be a hit in classrooms!
Love that this book had a wonderful rhyming story and that it gives background about the origin of the Windsor Pumpkin Regatta, a Canadian festival. Overall a great book filled with pumpkin facts that can be referenced again and again.

This book would be wonderful to use in a classroom during the autumnal season. Children of all ages are able to learn about the growth cycle of a well-beloved plant. You could use this book for so many activities in science and during halloween!
